RESUMO

Mangrove forests prevalent along the intertidal regions of tropical and sub-tropical coastlines are inimitable and dynamic ecosystems. They protect and stabilize coastal areas from deleterious consequences of natural disasters such as hurricanes and tsunamis. Although there are reviews on ecological aspects, industrial uses of mangrove-associated microorganisms and occurrence of pollutants in a region-specific manner, there is no exclusive review detailing the incidence of metals in mangrove sediments and associated biota in these ecosystems on a global level. In this review, mangrove forests have been classified in a continent-wise manner. Most of the investigations detail the distribution of metals such as zinc, chromium, arsenic, copper, cobalt, manganese, nickel, lead and mercury although in some cases levels of vanadium, strontium, zirconium and uranium have also been studied. Seasonal, tidal, marine, riverine, and terrestrial components are seen to influence occurrence, speciation, bioavailability and fate of metals in these ecosystems. In most of the cases, associated plants and animals also accumulate metals to different extents and are of ecotoxicological relevance. Levels of metals vary in a region specific manner and there is disparity in the pollution status of different mangrove areas. Protecting these vulnerable ecosystems from metal pollutants is important from environmental safety point of view.

RESUMO

There has been rapid progress in exploring microorganisms for green synthesis of nanoparticles since microbes show extraordinary diversity in terms of species richness and niche localization. Microorganisms are easy to culture using relatively inexpensive and simple nutrients under varied conditions of temperature, pressure, pH, etc. In this work, Deinococcus radiodurans that possesses the ability to withstand extremely high radiation and desiccation stress has been employed for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). D. radiodurans was able to accumulate AgNPs in medium under various conditions, and process optimization was carried out with respect to time, temperature, pH, and concentration of silver salt. AgNPs were characterized using UV/vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The microbially synthesized AgNPs exhibited good antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms and anti-biofouling activity. Their ability to inhibit growth and proliferation of cancer cell line was also examined, and it could be seen that AgNPs synthesized using D. radiodurans exhibited excellent anticancer activity.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Fibro-osseous lesions, along with few reactive lesions of the jaws exhibit an overlapping histo-morphologic spectrum with respect to the nature of calcifications and stromal components. This causes difficulty in assessing the origin, pathogenesis and diagnosis of these lesions. AIM: The present study analyses the mineralized components, cellularity, stromal density and stromal composition (nature of collagen, presence of elastic and oxytalan fibres) in cases of ossifying fibroma (OF), fibrous dysplasia (FD) and peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included a histochemical evaluation of six cases each of FD, OF and POF. Five consecutive sections of each case were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, picrosirius red (to assess maturation of fibres in polarizing light), van Gieson (for area fraction and collagen density) and aldehyde fuchsin (for elastic and oxytalan fibres) respectively. RESULTS: Significantly higher amounts of mature bone were seen in FD while cementicles having microlamellar pattern were predominant in OF and POF (p < 0.001). Area fraction, collagen density and immature stromal fibre content was higher in POF followed by FD and OF (p= 0.039). Oxytalan and elastic fibres were absent in FD. CONCLUSION: Higher cellularity of the stroma in OF was indicative of its neoplastic behaviour. Higher composition of oxytalan and elastic fibres in OF and POF supports their periodontal ligament origin. FD was distinct with more mature fibres in a lamellated bone and absence of oxytalan fibres.

RESUMO

Melanocytes are neural crest derivatives that exhibit a ubiquitous presence in the epidermis. They determine the complexion of an individual and most importantly, provide a barrier against ultraviolet radiations from the sun. Their presence in the oral cavity is a consistent finding, especially in the gingiva and buccal mucosa of the dark complexioned. Melanocytes occasionally form a part of the histology of a variety of odontogenic cysts and tumors. How these cells make their way into the lesional tissue and the diagnostic relevance of their presence remains elusive. This write up attempts to trace the path melanocytes take to find themselves within odontogenic tumors and also offer possible explanations for the same.
