In pursuing sustainable thermal insulation solutions, this study explores the integration of human hair and feather keratin with alginate. The aim is to assess its potential in thermal insulation materials, focusing on the resultant composites' thermal and mechanical characteristics. The investigation uncovers that the type and proportion of keratin significantly influence the composites' porosity and thermal conductivity. Specifically, higher feather keratin content is associated with lesser sulfur and reduced crosslinking due to shorter amino acids, leading to increased porosity and pore sizes. This, in turn, results in a decrease in ß-structured hydrogen bond networks, raising non-ordered protein structures and diminishing thermal conductivity from 0.044 W/(m·K) for pure alginate matrices to between 0.033 and 0.038 W/(m·K) for keratin-alginate composites, contingent upon the specific ratio of feather to hair keratin used. Mechanical evaluations further indicate that composites with a higher ratio of hair keratin exhibit an enhanced compressive modulus, ranging from 60 to 77 kPa, demonstrating the potential for tailored mechanical properties to suit various applications. The research underscores the critical role of sulfur content and the crosslinking index within keratin's structures, significantly impacting the thermal and mechanical properties of the matrices. The findings position keratin-based composites as environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional insulation materials.

Background: This study evaluated early childhood comorbidities of cerebral palsy (CP) in low birth weight (LBW) children and assessed the impact of maternal bio-psychosocial factors on CP risk in preterm infants of varying birth weights (BWs). Methods: Data from 15,181 preterm infants (2009-2013) and 151,810 controls were analyzed using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. CP prevalence and LBW-associated comorbidities were examined, and odds ratios (ORs) were calculated. Results: This study confirmed increasing prematurity and LBW rates in Taiwan, with LBW infants showing higher CP prevalence. Significant maternal risk factors included age extremes (<20 and >40 years). LBW infants exhibited higher risks for respiratory, circulatory, nervous system, and psycho-developmental comorbidities compared with controls, with the lowest BW having even higher ORs. Maternal factors such as family income, the number of hospital admissions, and length of hospital stay were remarkably correlated with BW and subsequent complications. Each additional gestational week crucially reduced the risk of complications in premature infants. Conclusions: LBW infants are at a higher risk for CP and various comorbidities, with maternal bio-psychosocial factors playing a critical role. Addressing these factors in prenatal care and interventions is essential to improve outcomes for premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Trace metals such as iron, nickel, copper, zinc, and cadmium (Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd) are essential micronutrients (and sometimes toxins) for phytoplankton, and the analysis of trace-metal stable isotopes in seawater is a valuable tool for exploring the biogeochemical cycling of these elements in the ocean. However, the complex and often time-consuming chromatography process required to purify these elements from seawater has limited the number of trace-metal isotope samples which can be easily processed in biogeochemical studies. To facilitate the trace-metal stable isotope analysis, here, we describe a new rapid procedure that utilizes automated chromatography for extracting and purifying Ni and Cu from seawater for isotope analysis using a prepFAST-MC™ system (Elemental Scientific Inc.). RESULTS: We have tested the matrix removal effectiveness, recoveries, and procedural blanks of the new purification procedure with satisfactory results. A nearly complete recovery of Ni and a quantitative recovery of Cu are achieved. The total procedural blanks are 0.33 ± 0.24 ng for Ni and 0.42 ± 0.18 ng for Cu, which is negligible for natural seawater samples. The new procedure cleanly separates Ni and Cu from key seawater matrix elements that may cause interferences during mass spectrometry analysis. When the new procedure was used to purify seawater samples for Ni and Cu stable isotope analysis by multi-collector ICP-MS, we achieved an overall uncertainty of 0.07 ‰ for δ60Ni and 0.09 ‰ for δ65Cu (2 SD). The new purification procedure was also tested using natural seawater samples from the South Pacific, for comparison of δ60Ni and δ65Cu achieved in the same samples purified by traditional hand columns. Both methods produced similar results, and the results from both methods are consistent with analyses of δ60Ni and δ65Cu from other ocean locations as reported by other laboratories. SIGNIFICANCE: This study presents a new rapid procedure for seawater stable-metal isotope analysis by automating the chromatography step. We anticipate that the automated chromatography described here will facilitate the rapid and accurate analysis of seawater δ60Ni and δ65Cu in future studies, and may be adapted in the future to automate chromatographic purification of Fe, Zn, and Cd isotopes from seawater.

Numerous studies have compared outcomes of liver resection (LR) of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to those of patients with non-NAFLD-related HCC. However, results have been inconsistent. We aim to clarify this issue. We enrolled 801 patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC, 433 patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC, and 128 patients with NAFLD-related HCC undergoing LR. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of patients with different etiologies of chronic liver disease was compared using the Kaplan-Meier estimator and log-rank test after propensity score matching (PSM). After PSM, 83 patients remained in each group. The groups did not differ significantly in age, sex, the proportion of patients with pathological American Joint Committee on Cancer stage 1, tumor size > 50 mm, receipt of major resection, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) ≥ 20 ng/ml, presence of cirrhosis, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification. The five-year OS of patients with HBV-, HCV-, and NAFLD-related HCC was 78%, 75%, and 78%, respectively (p = 0.789). The five-year DFS of the HBV, HCV, and NAFLD groups was 60%, 45%, and 54%, respectively (p = 0.159). Perioperative morbidity was noted in 17 (20.5%) in the HBV group, 22 (26.5%) in the HCV group, and 15 (18.1%) in the NAFLD group (p = 0.398). The five-year OS, DFS, and perioperative morbidity of patients undergoing LR for NAFLD-related HCC and those for viral hepatitis-related HCC was similar.

AIMS: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) significantly impacts health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). Existing HR-QoL questionnaires can show inconsistencies, potentially misrepresenting patient self-reports. This study examines the variation in HR-QoL measurement tools for HFrEF patients, identifying related determinants. METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analysed 134 hospitalized patients with acute decompensated HFrEF at a Taiwanese tertiary centre's Heart Failure Post-Acute-Care (HF-PAC) programme. Participants completed the EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) questionnaire, the EQ-5D visual analogue scale (VAS), and the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). Utility values were obtained from the EQ-5D questionnaire. Demographic features were depicted using descriptive statistics, while multivariate regression was used to ascertain relationships between HR-QoL measurements and determinants. Average scores for EQ-5D, MLHFQ, EQ-5D utility, and VAS were 6.1 ± 1.6, 21.8 ± 21.3, 81.7 ± 27.0, and 59.5 ± 14.6, respectively. Significant correlations were observed among the three tools. The New York Heart Association functional class showed a notable association with all tool scores. Other associations encompassed EQ-5D with coronary artery disease, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, and the 6 min walk test; EQ-5D VAS with chronic kidney disease; and MLHFQ with age. CONCLUSIONS: This study illuminates the variance in HR-QoL measurement tools for Taiwanese HFrEF patients. Using a range of these tools is beneficial in unveiling diverse determinants and approaching comprehensive patient-centred care. However, for a more precise HR-QoL assessment in Taiwanese HFrEF patients, recalibrating the EQ-5D-derived utility scores might be necessary, emphasizing the importance of patient-specific considerations within the HF-PAC programme.

Augmentation cystoplasty (AC) is an effective surgical procedure for patients with neurogenic bladder whenever conservative treatments have failed. The present study aimed to determine the risks of metabolic complications, malignancy, long-term outcomes and histopathologic changes of native bladder and the augmented intestine after AC in children with neurogenic bladder. Pediatric patients < 18 years who underwent AC between 2000 and 2020 were enrolled. Early postoperative complications, long-term outcomes and histopathologic changes in mucosal biopsies of native bladder and the augmented intestine after AC were reviewed. Twenty-two patients with a mean age of 7.6 ± 4.4 years were included. The ileum was used in 19 patients and the sigmoid colon in 3 patients. The length of hospital stay was 14.8 ± 6.8 days. Post-operatively, the urinary continence rate improved from 22.7 to 81.8% (p < 0.001). Hydronephrosis resolved in 17 of 19 patients. Vesicoureteral reflux resolved in 16 (64.0%) of the refluxing ureter units and was downgraded in 7 (28.0%). Grades of hydronephrosis and reflux significantly improved following AC (p < 0.001). The estimated glomerular filtration rate also significantly increased (p = 0.012). Formation of urinary tract stones was the most frequent late complication (in 8 patients, 36.4%). Life-threatening spontaneous bladder perforation occurred in 1 patient. After a mean follow-up of 13.4 ± 5.9 years, there were no cases of mortality, new-onset symptomatic metabolic acidosis, or changes in serum electrolytes. Of the 17 patients who were followed for > 10 years, no cases of malignancy or metaplastic changes were identified in the native bladder or augmented bowel epithelium. AC is a safe and effective procedure with low surgical and metabolic complication rates. In addition, AC provides a satisfactory continence rate and long-term protection of renal function, increases functional capacity, and regresses reflux and hydronephrosis. Individualized surveillance is recommended for the early identification of urolithiasis and metabolic disturbances.

The Ryukyu Islands of Japan are a biodiversity hotspot due to geographical and historical factors. Tricyrtis formosana is a perennial herbaceous plant that commonly found in Taiwan. But only a few populations have been identified in a limited habitat on Iriomote Island, while populations of unknown origin occur near human settlements in an area on the main island of Okinawa. To better understand these populations of the phylogenetic uniqueness and intrinsic vulnerability, we conducted comparative analyses including (1) phylogeny and population structure with MIG-seq data, (2) photosynthesis-related traits of plants grown under common conditions and (3) transcriptome analysis to detect deleterious variations. Results revealed that T. formosana was split into two clades by the congeners and that Iriomote and Okinawa populations independently derived from ancestral Taiwanese populations in each clade. Photosynthetic efficiency was lowest in the Iriomote population, followed by Okinawa and Taiwan. Transcriptome analysis showed that the Iriomote population accumulated more deleterious variations, suggesting intrinsic vulnerability. These results indicate that each T. formosana population in Japan is phylogenetically unique and has been independently dispersed from Taiwan, and that the Iriomote population presents a high conservation difficulty with a unique photosynthesis-related characteristic and a larger amount of deleterious variations.

Many studies have been exploring the use of bone graft materials (BGMs) and mesenchymal stem cells in bone defect reconstruction. However, the regeneration potential of Algipore (highly purified hydroxyapatite) and Biphasic (hydroxyapatite/beta-tricalcium phosphate) BGMs combined with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) remains unclear. Therefore, we evaluated their osseointegration capacities in reconstructing peri-implant bone defects. The cellular characteristics of BMSCs and the material properties of Algipore and Biphasic were assessed in vitro. Four experimental groups-Algipore, Biphasic, Algipore+BMSCs, and Biphasic+BMSCs-were designed in a rabbit tibia peri-implant defect model. Implant stability parameters were measured. After 4 and 8 weeks of healing, all samples were evaluated using micro-CT, histological, and histomorphometric analysis. In the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy experiment, the Ca/P ratio was higher for Algipore (1.67) than for Biphasic (1.44). The ISQ values continuously increased, and the PTV values gradually decreased for all groups during the healing period. Both Algipore and Biphasic BGM promoted new bone regeneration. Higher implant stability and bone volume density were observed when Algipore and Biphasic BGMs were combined with BMSCs. Biphasic BGM exhibited a faster degradation rate than Algipore BGM. Notably, after eight weeks of healing, Algipore with BSMCs showed more bone-implant contact than Biphasic alone (p < 0.05). Both Algipore and Biphasic are efficient in reconstructing peri-implant bone defects. In addition, Algipore BGM incorporation with BSMCs displayed the best performance in enhancing implant stability and osseointegration potential.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum (PE) and explore the impacts of sex and age on outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 594 consecutive children ≤18 years of age who underwent the thoracoscopy-assisted Nuss technique between January 2006 and July 2019. The severity of pectus deformity was calculated according to the Haller index (HI). The classification of PE and clinical data including complications was analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 594 patients, 456 (76.8%) were boys and 138 (23.2%) were girls. The mean age at surgery was 10.0 ± 5.0 years. The most common types of PE were 1A and 2A2 according to Park classification. Intraoperative and postoperative complication rates were 2/594 (0.3%) and 74/594 (12.5%), respectively. The most common complication was bar displacement. The bar was removed in 414 patients 3.5 ± 0.8 years later. The mean preoperative HI, postoperative HI with bar, and HI after bar removal were 4.2 ± 1.7, 2.4 ± 0.3, and 2.7 ± 0.5, respectively. Compared to the preoperative HI, both the postoperative HI with bar and HI after bar removal were significantly lower ( p < 0.001). For preschool-age children, the preoperative HI was significantly higher ( p = 0.027) and the change in HI significantly improved compared to school-age children ( p = 0.004). Boys and adolescents needed significantly more bars and stabilizers. CONCLUSION: Surgical correction of PE using the Nuss procedure is a safe procedure and improves the HI in children of different ages, even in those younger than 6 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis is a significant risk factor affecting patients' prognosis after liver resection (LR) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We aimed to develop a model with tumor necrosis as a variable to predict early tumor recurrence in HCC patients undergoing LR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent LR between 2010 and 2018 for newly diagnosed HCC but did not receive neoadjuvant therapy were enrolled in this retrospective study. Six predictive factors based on pathological features-tumor size > 5 cm, multiple tumors, high-grade tumor differentiation, tumor necrosis, microvascular invasion, and cirrhosis-were chosen a priori based on clinical relevance to construct a multivariate logistic regression model. The variables were always retained in the model. The impact of each variable on early tumor recurrence within one year of LR was estimated and visualized using a nomogram. The nomogram's performance was evaluated using calibration plots with bootstrapping. RESULTS: Early tumor recurrence was observed in 161 (21.3%) patients. The concordance index of the proposed nomogram was 0.722. The calibration plots showed good agreement between nomogram predictions and actual observations of early recurrence. CONCLUSION: We developed a nomogram incorporating tumor necrosis to predict early recurrence of HCC after LR. Its predictive accuracy is satisfactory.

Electrochemical CO2 separations, which use electricity rather than thermal energy to reverse sorption of CO2 from concentrated point sources or air, are emerging as compelling alternatives to conventional approaches given their isothermal, ambient operating conditions, and ability to integrate with renewable energy inputs. Despite several electrochemical approaches proposed in previous studies, further explorations of new electrochemical CO2 separation methods are crucial to widen choices for different emissions sources. Herein, we report an electrochemical cation-swing process that is able to reversibly modulate the CO2 loading on liquid amine sorbents in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent. The process exploits a reversible carbamic acid-to-carbamate conversion reaction that is induced by changing the identity of Lewis acid cations (e.g. K+, Li+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Zn2+) coordinated to the amine-CO2 adduct in the electrolyte. Using ethoxyethylamine (EEA) as a model amine, we present NMR-based speciation studies of carbamic acid-to-carbamate conversion as a function of amine/salt concentrations and cation identity. The reaction is further probed using gas-flow reaction microcalorimetry, revealing the energetic driving forces between cations and the amine-CO2 adduct that play a key role in the described re-speciation. A prototype electrochemical cell was further constructed comprising a Prussian white (PW) potassium (K+) intercalation cathode, zinc (Zn) foil anode, and EEA/DMSO electrolyte containing a dual KTFSI/Zn(TFSI)2 salt. A low CO2 separation energy of ∼22-39 kJ/mol CO2 (0.1-0.5 mA cm-2) was achieved with a practical CO2 loading delta of ∼0.15 mol CO2/mol amine. Further optimizations in electrolyte design and cell architectures toward continuous CO2 capture-release are expected to enhance rate performance while retaining favorable separation energies.

Elevated urinary cystine levels are closely associated with the development of cystine stone. Therefore, the ability to rapidly and efficiently determine urinary cystine levels is crucial for physicians to manage patients with cystinuria or those undergoing cystine medication. In this study, an amperometric method employing a commercial screen-printed silver electrode was successfully established. The resulting calibration curve indicated a detection limit of 0.65 mg/dL. Satisfactory recoveries ranging from 89% to 109% were obtained for urine samples. The method was also effective for the quality control analysis of cystine in pharmaceutical tablets. The recovery of cystine from pharmaceutical tablets ranged from 98% to 101% using the developed method. This method enables the rapid and accurate determination of cystine in both urine samples and pharmaceutical tablets and provides valuable information for clinical diagnosis and pharmaceutical quality control.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplant recipients have an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for fractures after liver transplant in a Taiwanese population. METHODS: We identified newly diagnosed liver transplant recipients from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan between 2003 and 2015. Risk factors of post-transplant fractures were analyzed using a Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: A total of 4821 patients underwent liver transplantation, of whom 419 (8.7%) had post-transplant fractures. Independent predictors of post-transplant fractures were age ≥65 years at transplantation (hazard ratio (HR): 1.566; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.122-2.186), female sex (HR: 1.648; 95% CI 1.319-2.057), fractures within 1 year prior to transplant (HR: 3.664; 95% CI 2.503-5.364), hepatitis C carriers (HR: 1.594; 95% CI 1.289-1.970), alcoholism (HR: 1.557; 95% CI 1.087-2.230) and daily prednisolone dose >1.61-3.78 mg/day (HR: 1.354; 95% CI 1.005-1.824), >3.78-9.18 mg (HR: 4.182; 95% CI 3.155-5.544) and >9.18 mg (HR: 13.334; 95% CI 9.506-18.703). Post-transplant fractures were inversely correlated with tacrolimus (HR: 0.617; 95% CI 0.417-0.913) and sirolimus/everolimus (HR: 0.504; 95% CI 0.391-0.650) treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The liver transplant recipients, and especially those who were aged ≥65 years, female, hepatitis C carriers, had a history of fractures within 1 year prior to transplant, alcoholism, and higher daily prednisolone dose were associated with an increased risk of post-transplant fractures. Conversely, the use of tacrolimus and sirolimus/everolimus was associated with a decreased risk of fractures.


This study identified risk factors for fractures after liver transplant in a population-based study in an area with high prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C.Recipients who were aged ≥65 years, female, hepatitis C carriers, had a history of fractures within 1 year prior to transplant, alcoholism, and higher daily prednisolone dose were independent risk factors for post-transplant fractures.Our findings highlight the importance of identifying individuals at high risk of fractures and concomitant tacrolimus and sirolimus/everolimus treatment to avoid the use of high-dose steroids and prevent post-transplant fractures.

BACKGROUND: Using immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) as a downstaging therapy for liver transplantation (LT) has improved outcomes for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, this therapy carries a risk of post-transplant graft rejection. The washout (WO) period between the last ICI dose and LT seems critical in preventing postoperative rejection. This study aimed to optimize the WO period by balancing tumor burden suppression and rejection prevention using ICIs before LT. METHODS: We reviewed published case reports or series from March 2020 to December 2022 regarding LT for HCC after downstaging or bridge therapy with ICIs and included 4 of our cases. Most patients received atezolizumab, nivolumab, or pembrolizumab; these ICIs shared a half-life of around 28 days. Therefore, we excluded cases without definite WO period data and those using non-atezolizumab/nivolumab/pembrolizumab ICIs and ultimately enrolled 22 patients for analysis. We compared their clinical outcomes and estimated the rejection-free survival for every 0.5 half-life interval. RESULTS: Most study subjects received nivolumab (n = 25). Six patients had severe rejections (nivolumab group, n = 5) and needed rescue management. Of the 6 cases, 1 patient died after rejection, and 2 underwent re-transplantation. The median WO period in these 6 patients was 22 days (IQR: 9-35 days). In addition, we found that a 1.5 half-life (42 days) was the shortest safe WO period associated with significant rejection-free survival (P = .005). CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that 42 days was the safest WO period before LT for HCC after ICI with atezolizumab, nivolumab, or pembrolizumab.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation (LT) is being increasingly performed for alcohol-related liver disease (ALD). It is unclear whether the increasing frequency of LTs in ALD patients has a negative impact on deceased-donor (DDLT) allocation and whether the current policy of 6 months of abstinence before transplantation effectively prevents recidivism after transplantation or improves long-term outcomes. METHODS: A total of 506 adult LT recipients, including 97 ALD patients, were enrolled. The outcomes of ALD patients were compared with those of non-ALD patients. The 97 ALD patients were further divided into group A (6-month abstinence) and group N (nonabstinence) based on the pretransplant alcohol withdrawal period. The incidence of relapsed drinking and the long-term outcomes were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The prevalence of LT for ALD significantly increased after 2016 (27.0% vs 14.0%; p < 0.01), but the frequency of DDLT for ALD remained unchanged (22.6% vs 34.1%, p = 0.210). After a median follow-up of 56.9 months, patient survival was comparable between the ALD and non-ALD patients (1, 3, and 5 years posttransplant: 87.6%, 84.3%, and 79.5% vs 82.8%, 76.6%, and 72.2%, respectively; p = 0.396). The results were consistent irrespective of the transplant type and disease severity. In ALD patients, 22 of the 70 (31.4%) patients reported relapsed drinking after transplantation, and the prevalence in group A had a higher tendency than that in group N (38.3% vs 17.4%, p = 0.077). Six months of abstinence or nonabstinence did not result in a survival difference, and de novo malignancies were the leading cause of late patient death in ALD patients. CONCLUSION: LT achieves favorable outcomes for ALD patients. Six months of abstinence pretransplant did not predict the risk of recidivism after transplantation. The high incidence of de novo malignancies in these patients warrants a more comprehensive physical evaluation and better lifestyle modifications to improve long-term outcomes.

Situated in the southern end of the Annamite Mountain Range, Langbiang Plateau is a major biodiversity hotspot of southern Vietnam known for high species diversity and endemicity. To achieve effective conservation, parts of the plateau were designated as the Langbiang Biosphere Reserve, an UNESCO World Network aiming to improve relationships between inhabitants and their environments. Amongst the rich endemic flora of the plateau are three gesneriads ascribed to Primulina, a calciphilous genus with high species diversity in the vast limestone karsts stretching from southern China to northern Vietnam. However, a recent phylogenetic study questioned the generic placement of the Langbiang Primulina, corroborating with observations on the geographical distribution, habitat preference, and phyllotaxy of the three species. Based on phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ITS and plastid trnL-F DNA sequences of a comprehensive sampling covering nearly all genera of the Old World Gesneriaceae, we demonstrate that the three Langbiang Primulina species form a fully supported clade distantly related to other Primulina. As this clade is biogeographically, ecologically, morphologically, and phylogenetically distinct worthy of generic recognition, we propose to name it Langbiangia gen. nov. to highlight the rich and unique biodiversity of the Langbiang Plateau. By means of this taxonomic endeavor, we are hoping to raise the conservation awareness of this biodiversity heritage of southern Vietnam and promote the importance of Langbiang Biosphere Reserve that is crucial for achieving action-oriented global targets of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (GBF) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)-effective conservation and management of at least 30% of biodiverse terrestrial, inland water, and costal and marine areas by 2030-that has been agreed at the COP15 in Montréal in December 2022.

PURPOSE: The 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been used since 2018. However, whether any significant difference in overall survival (OS) exists between patients with T1a and T1b HCC who undergo resection has been controversial. We aim to clarify this issue. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled newly diagnosed HCC patients who underwent liver resection (LR) from 2010 to 2020 at our institution. OS was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using log-rank tests. Prognostic factors for OS were identified by multivariate analysis. RESULTS: This study enrolled 1250 newly diagnosed HCC patients who underwent LR. No significant differences in OS were identified between patients with T1a and T1b tumors among all patients (p = 0.694), cirrhotic patients (p = 0.753), non-cirrhotic patients (p = 0.146), patients with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) > 20 ng/ml (p = 0.562), patients with AFP ≤ 20 ng/ml (p = 0.967), patients with Edmondson grade 1 or 2 (p = 0.615), patients with Edmondson grade 3 or 4 (p = 0.825), patients positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg; p = 0.308), in patients positive for anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody (p = 0.781), or patients negative for both HBsAg and anti-HCV antibody (p = 0.125). Using T1a as the reference, multivariate analysis showed that T1b is not a significant predictive factor for OS (hazard ratio (HR): 1.338; 95% confidence interval (CI):0.737-2.431; p = 0.339). CONCLUSION: No significant difference in OS was observed between patients who underwent LR to treat T1a and T1b HCC tumors.

Antrophyum is one of the largest genera of vittarioid ferns (Pteridaceae) and is most diverse in tropical Asia and the Pacific Islands, but also occurs in temperate Asia, Australia, tropical Africa and the Malagasy region. The only monographic study of Antrophyum was published more than a century ago and a modern assessment of its diversity is lacking. Here, we reconstructed a comprehensively sampled and robustly supported phylogeny for the genus based on four chloroplast markers using Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses. We then explored the evolution of the genus from the perspectives of morphology, systematics and historical biogeography. We investigated nine critical morphological characters using a morphometric approach and reconstructed their evolution on the phylogeny. We describe four new species and provide new insight into species delimitation. We currently recognize 34 species for the genus and provide a key to identify them. The results of biogeographical analysis suggest that the distribution of extant species is largely shaped by both ancient and recent dispersal events.

INTRODUCTION: Tumor necrosis has been associated with poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients undergoing liver resection (LR). However, more evidence is needed to clarify this issue. METHODS: Patients who underwent upfront LR between 2010 and 2018 for newly diagnosed HCC without undergoing neoadjuvant therapy were enrolled in this retrospective study. Tumor necrosis was classified as present or absent according to retrospective examinations. The association between tumor necrosis, pathologic characteristics, overall survival (OS), and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 756 patients who underwent LR for HCC, tumor necrosis was present in 279 (36.9%) patients. Compared with patients without tumor necrosis, patients with tumor necrosis had higher proportions of tumors sized >5.0 cm (P < 0.001), multiple tumors (P < 0.001), microvascular or macrovascular invasion (P < 0.001), poorly differentiated or undifferentiated tumors (P < 0.001), and T stage 3 or 4 (P < 0.001) on pathological examination. The presence of tumor necrosis was associated with worse OS and RFS compared with the absence of tumor necrosis: 5-y OS was 56% versus 78% (P < 0.001); 5-y RFS was 42% versus 55% (P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, the presence of tumor necrosis was an independent factor associated with worse OS (hazard ratio: 1.956; 95% confidence interval: 1.409-2.716; P < 0.001) and RFS (hazard ratio: 1.422; 95% confidence interval: 1.085-1.865; P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: Tumor necrosis was associated with worse OS and RFS among patients who underwent LR for HCC.

Patagonian aquatic environments have been invaded since the end of the last century by different species of salmonids. Knowing the natal origin and homing/straying rate of the salmonids in colonised environments is essential to understanding the dispersal mechanisms and developing management plans. In the last two decades, Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha showed the greatest natural dispersal capacity in Patagonia. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the environmental strontium isotope ratio (87Sr/86Sr) as a potential natural tag to infer the natal origin and ontogenetic habitat use of salmonids in Patagonia, specifically Chinook salmon. 87Sr/86Sr ratio was determined in water samples from 26 sites distributed in 14 Atlantic and Pacific basins in low and high water seasons. Environmental 87Sr/86Sr showed greater spatial than temporal variation, revealing great potential as a tool to infer the natal origin and life history of several migratory fish species in Patagonia. Otolith core-to-edge 87Sr/86Sr profiles were also analysed in 108 Chinook salmon from six basins. A cluster analysis based on the Unweighted Pair Group method (UPGMA) and Euclidean distances without prior classification grouped the sampled rivers into five main groups with significantly different (p < 0.05) isotopic ratios, sometimes integrated basins with different slopes (Atlantic or Pacific). The cluster analysis based on the natal 87Sr/86Sr period in otolith (∼natal origin) showed clear segregation between the Atlantic and Pacific samples. A mismatch between water and otolith natal 87Sr/86Sr ratio was detected in some Atlantic basins (e.g. De las Vueltas River in Santa Cruz Basin) and Pacific (e.g. Liquiñe Basin) and, which could be explained either by straying behaviours or by large geochemical variability between tributaries, within river systems. Our results showed that 87Sr/86Sr is a useful natural tag to trace the life history of migratory fishes in Patagonia, especially for invasive species such as Chinook salmon.
