RESUMO

Radiometric calibration utilizing the Moon as a reference source is termed as lunar calibration. It is a useful method for evaluating the performance of optical sensors onboard satellites orbiting the Earth. Lunar calibration provides sufficient radiometric calibration opportunities without requiring any special equipment, and is suitable for nano/microsatellites. This study applies lunar calibration to a multispectral sensor, Ocean Observation Camera (OOC), on board a microsatellite named Rapid International Scientific Experiment Satellite. Simulating the brightness of the Moon based on the RObotic Lunar Observatory and SELENE/Spectrum Profiler models, sensitivity degradation was proven to be negligible in any of the four spectral bands of the OOC with the sensor temperature correction. A bluing trend in the OOC's sensor sensitivity was revealed, indicating a shorter observation wavelength shows larger irradiance. Comparing the top-of-atmosphere reflectance of Railroad Valley Playa with the Radiometric Calibration Network dataset revealed that the derived calibration parameter from the lunar calibration was valid for correcting the bluing trend in the visible range. Although the lunar and vicarious calibration parameters for the infrared band were unexpectedly inconsistent, lunar calibration could potentially contribute toward estimating the contaminated background radiance in the Earth observation images.

The aim of this study was to assess the spatial stability of stroke patients while holding a freely movable object. Twenty-two acute stroke patients with mild hand impairment performed a grip and lift task using the thumb and index finger. The displacement of the center of pressure (COP) trajectory, the grip force (GF) and several clinical parameters were monitored. Although the GF was not different between paretic and nonparetic hands, the COP trajectory of the paretic index finger was increased. Moreover, the COP trajectories of the thumb and index finger in hemorrhagic patients were longer than those in ischemic patients. These discrepancies between kinetic parameters suggest that different aspects of grip force control may be considered in patients with mild stroke.

Although nano/microsatellites have great potential as remote sensing platforms, the spatial and spectral resolutions of an optical payload instrument are limited. In this study, a high spatial resolution multispectral sensor, the High-Precision Telescope (HPT), was developed for the RISING-2 microsatellite. The HPT has four image sensors: three in the visible region of the spectrum used for the composition of true color images, and a fourth in the near-infrared region, which employs liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF) technology for wavelength scanning. Band-to-band image registration methods have also been developed for the HPT and implemented in the image processing procedure. The processed images were compared with other satellite images, and proven to be useful in various remote sensing applications. Thus, LCTF technology can be considered an innovative tool that is suitable for future multi/hyperspectral remote sensing by nano/microsatellites.

BACKGROUND: Enalapril is an antihypertensive medicine that inhibits angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE). The present study investigated interactions between enalapril and a fermented milk product (FMP) containing the ACE-inhibitory peptides, Val-Pro-Pro (VPP) and Ile-Pro-Pro (IPP). METHODS: Single-dose and long-term (6-week) in vivo studies were used to investigate the effects of enalapril and FMP on blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats. RESULTS: Single-dose oral administration of concomitant enalapril and FMP (VPP, IPP: 3.5 mg/kg) produced a lower antihypertensive effect than enalapril monotherapy. However, this effect was not observed in animals administered a lower dose of FMP (VPP, IPP: 1.75 mg/kg) along with enalapril. In rats administered enalapril concomitantly with a fish protein product (FPP) containing a different ACE inhibitory peptide (Leu-Lys-Pro-Asn-Met), significant attenuation of the antihypertensive effect was also observed 1 and 2 h after administration, as compared to enalapril monotherapy. During a 6-week oral administration study, the enalapril monotherapy group showed significant antihypertensive effects compared to those observed in the controls on day 28. Oral administration of enalapril and FMP, with a 1-h interval between doses, resulted in significant antihypertensive effects on day 35, indicating a delayed onset in comparison to enalapril monotherapy. In rats receiving enalapril monotherapy for 28 days, followed by 14 days of concomitant FMP, significant antihypertensive effects were observed after day 35, and these did not differ significantly from the effects observed during enalapril monotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: The present findings suggested that long-term concomitant intake of FMP and enalapril could influence the antihypertensive effects of this drug.

The onset of oral candidiasis is accompanied by inflammatory symptoms such as pain in the tongue, edema or tissue damage and lowers the quality of life (QOL) of the patient. In a murine oral candidiasis model, the effects were studied of terpinen-4-ol (T-4-ol), one of the main constituents of tea tree oil, Melaleuca alternifolia, on inflammatory reactions. When immunosuppressed mice were orally infected with Candida albicans, their tongues showed inflammatory symptoms within 24 h after the infection, which was monitored by an increase of myeloperoxidase activity and macrophage inflammatory protein-2 in their tongue homogenates. Oral treatment with 50 µL of 40 mg/mL terpinen-4-ol 3h after the Candida infection clearly suppressed the increase of these inflammatory parameters. In vitro analysis of the effects of terpinen-4-ol on cytokine secretion of macrophages indicated that 800 µg/mL of this substance significantly inhibited the cytokine production of the macrophages cultured in the presence of heat-killed C. albicans cells. Based on these findings, the role of the anti-inflammatory action of T-4-ol in its therapeutic activity against oral candidiasis was discussed.

The combined effect of terpinen-4-ol, the main component of tea tree oil, and capric acid against mycelial growth of Candida albicans and murine oral candidiasis was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Mycelial growth of C. albicans was estimated by the Cristal violet method. Combination of these compounds revealed a potent synergistic inhibition of growth. Therapeutic efficacy of the combination was evaluated microbiologically in murine oral candidiasis, and its application of the compounds clearly demonstrated therapeutic activity. Based on these results, the combined agent of terpinen-4-ol and capric acid was discussed as a possible candidate for oral candidiasis therapy.

The ACE inhibitory activities of mixtures of FOSHUs (Healthya, Goma-Mugicha, Lapis Support and Ameal) were examined in order to identify any antihypertensive interactions. Among combinations of Healthya with other samples that contain active peptides, only that with Ameal was found to have no inhibitory activity. Enhanced activity was observed in 2 other mixtures. The activity of a mixture of tea polyphenols and the whey component extracted from an Ameal solution was significantly decreased, thus demonstrating that whey protein lowered the ACE inhibitory activity of Healthya. Although oral administration of tea polyphenols alone significantly decreased SBP in SHR at 2 and 4 hr, combined administration with Ameal failed to decrease SBP at the same time points. In conclusion, the simultaneous intake of tea and FOSHUs that contain active peptides might affect daily self-antihypertensive management via enhancement or suppression of ACE inhibitory activity.

The effect of captopril on neurally evoked bradycardia and tachycardia was investigated in pithed rats. Captopril enhanced the vagal nerve stimulation-evoked bradycardia. Angiotensin I reduced the vagal bradycardia, which was reversed by subsequent administration of captopril. Bradykinin did not affect the neurally evoked bradycardia. Captopril and angiotensin I affected neither the exogenous acetylcholine-evoked bradycardia nor the sympathetic nerve stimulation-evoked tachycardia. These results suggest that the interruption of angiotensin II formation by captopril causes less presynaptic inhibition of acetylcholine release via angiotensin II receptors without affecting cardiac sympathetic neurotransmission.

Hyperglycemia and hypercapnia aggravate intra-ischemic acidosis and subsequent brain damage. However, hyperglycemia causes more extensive post-ischemic damage than hypercapnia, particularly in the cingulate cortex. We investigated the changes in the subcellular distribution of protein kinase Cgamma (PKCgamma) and the Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII), as well as changes in protein tyrosine phosphorylation during and following 10 min normoglycemic, hyperglycemic (plasma glucose approximately 20 mM) and hypercapnic (paCO2) approximately 300 mm Hg) global cerebral ischemia. During reperfusion period, the translocation to cell membranes of PKCgamma, but not CaMKII, was prolonged by intra-ischemic hyperglycemia, while it was only marginally affected by hypercapnia. The tyrosine-phosphorylation of proteins in the synaptosomal membranes, as well as the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in the cytosol, markedly increased during reperfusion following hyperglycemic ischemia, but to a lesser degree following hypercapnic ischemia. Our data suggest that PKCgamma, tyrosine kinase and ERK systems are involved in the process of ischemic damage in the cingulate cortex, where hyperglycemia may affect these kinases through an additional mechanism other than exaggerated acidosis.

To explore biochemical basis for cerebroprotective effect of immunosuppressant FK506, we studied changes in subcellular distribution of protein kinase C gamma (PKC gamma) as well as calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) after ischemia. Male Mongolian gerbils were subjected to 5 min forebrain ischemia. FK506 (1 or 3 mg kg-1) was administered at 1 min after recirculation, which was confirmed to be cerebroprotective by histological examination at seven days after ischemia. At the designated time points (before ischemia, 5 min ischemia, 1 and 24 h recovery), heads were frozen and samples were taken from CA1 subfield of hippocampus. Western blot analysis was carried out. Persistent translocations of PKC gamma and CaMKII to synaptosomal P2 fraction were observed in vehicle-treated group. FK506 significantly decreased levels of PKC gamma and CaMKII in P2 fraction at 24 h of recovery. The present results suggest FK506 downregulates translocated PKC gamma and CaMKII, which may contribute to its survival promoting effect after cerebral ischemia.
