RESUMO

The growing interest in the non-equilibrium assembly of colloidal particles in active liquids is driven by the motivation to create novel structures endowed with tunable properties unattainable within the confines of equilibrium systems. Here, we present an experimental investigation of the structural features of colloidal assemblies in active liquids of chiral E. coli. The colloidal particles form dynamic clusters due to the effective interaction mediated by active media. The activity and chirality of the swimmers strongly influence the dynamics and local ordering of colloidal particles, resulting in clusters with persistent rotation, whose structure differs significantly from those in equilibrium systems with attractive interactions, such as colloid-polymer mixtures. Our colloid-bacteria mixture displays several hallmark features of a percolation transition at a critical density, where the clusters span the system size. A closer examination of the critical exponents associated with cluster size distribution, the average cluster size, and the correlation length in the vicinity of the critical density shows deviations from the prediction of the standard continuum percolation model. Therefore, our experiments reveal a richer phase behavior of colloidal assemblies in active liquids.

Tinea universalis is a condition when most of the anatomical sites of body are involved due to dermatophyte infection both in immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. Here we present a case of tinea universalis due to Trichophyton indotineae (T. indotineae) from India. This species has emerged recently. Earlier, it has been reported as Trichophyton mentagrophytes (T. mentagrophytes) and Trichophyton interdigitale (T. interdigitale). T. indotineae has been associated with outbreaks and epidemics of chronic, recalcitrant, and nonresponsive to terbinafine, in India and several other countries. The patient was prescribed Itraconazole (200 mg/day), Luliconazole cream topically and antihistamine at night, with marked improvement clinically. Easy availability and misuse of corticosteroids cream, as over-the-counter drug, should be discouraged.

The transport properties of colloidal particles in active liquids have been studied extensively. It has led to a deeper understanding of the interactions between passive and active particles. However, the phase behavior of colloidal particles in active media has received little attention. Here, we present a combined experimental and numerical investigation of passive colloids dispersed in suspensions of active particles. Our study reveals dynamic clustering of colloids in active media due to an interplay of activity and attractive effective potential between the colloids. The strength of the effective potential is set by the size ratio of passive particles to the active ones. As the relative size of the passive particles increases, the effective potential becomes stronger and the average size of the clusters grows. The simulations reveal a macroscopic phase separation at sufficiently large size ratios. We will discuss the effect of density fluctuations of active particles on the nature of effective interactions between passive ones.

Cryptococcosis is caused by the inhalation of the desiccated encapsulated yeast or basidiospores, which are found in the environment. After the infectious particles reach the lungs, get disseminated hematogenously in various organs. Meningoencephalitis is one of the most common manifestations, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The dermal lesions can be either primary due to the traumatic implantation of infectious propagule or secondary in patients with disseminated infection due to cryptococcus. The typical presentations of the cutaneous lesions are like umbilicated lesions of molluscum contagiosum. The dermal lesions can also be similar to Kaposi sarcoma or talaromycosis (formerly penicilliosis). Here, we present a 34-year-old male HIV-positive and antiretroviral therapy-naive. The patient had a very low CD4 cell count and a high viral load. The patient was referred to the dermatology clinic for multiple eruptions due to umbilicated skin colored lesions 3-5 mm in diameter on the nose.The patient was first treated for the opportunistic infection. The causes of the dermal umbilicated skin lesions are several. We must find out whether the dermal lesion is due to infection with a single organism or more than one. It can be colesional also. Punch biopsy, India ink, and culture on Sabouraud dextrose agar confirmed the diagnosis of Cryptococcus neoformans.

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease that results in the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. The present study was conducted to compare the intralesional steroid and cryotherapy in the treatment of AA. Materials and Methods: The present clinical study was conducted in the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology, Muzaffarnagar Medical College. The simple random sampling technique was used for randomly dividing the subjects into two groups: group I (local cryotherapy) and group II (intralesional corticosteroid). Results: A positive response was significantly more among the intralesional steroid group (86.0%) when compared with the cryotherapy group (62.0%). There was a significant difference in relapse between intralesional steroid group (22.0%) and cryotherapy group (16.0%). An excellent response was significantly more among the intralesional steroid group (44.0%) when compared with the cryotherapy group (18.0%). Poor response was significantly more among the cryotherapy group (18.0%), compared with the intralesional steroid group (0.0%). The mean pre-treatment, post-treatment, and the change from pre- to post-treatment Severity of Alopecia Tool [SALT] were compared between cryotherapy and intralesional steroid groups using the unpaired t-test. The mean pre-treatment, post-treatment, and the change from pre- to post-treatment SALT were significantly more among the intralesional steroid group when compared with the cryotherapy group. Conclusion: The authors found that superficial cryotherapy could be a meaningful adjuvant treatment option for AA patients. There was a significantly less relapse rate with cryotherapy. Among the currently available topical modalities for the treatment of AA, the best response was to the intralesional steroids followed by cryotherapy.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a type of brain disorder, wherein a person experiences gradual memory loss, state of confusion, hallucination, agitation, and personality change. AD is marked by the presence of extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and synaptic losses. Increased cases of AD in recent times created a dire need to discover or identify chemical compounds that can cease the development of AD. This study focuses on finding potential drug molecule(s) active against ß-secretase, also known as ß-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1). Clustering analysis followed by phylogenetic studies on microarray datasets retrieved from GEO browser showed that BACE1 gene has genetic relatedness with the RCAN1 gene. A ligand library comprising 60 natural compounds retrieved from literature and 25 synthetic compounds collected from DrugBank were screened. Further, 350 analogues of potential parent compounds were added to the library for the docking purposes. Molecular docking studies identified 11-oxotigogenin as the best ligand molecule. The compound showed the binding affinity of - 11.1 Kcal/mole and forms three hydrogen bonds with Trp124, Ile174, and Arg176. The protein-ligand complex was subjected to 25 ns molecular dynamics simulation and the potential energy of the complex was found to be - 1.24579e+06 Kcal/mole. In this study, 11-oxotigogenin has shown promising results against BACE1, which is a leading cause of AD, hence warrants for in vitro and in vivo validation of the same. In addition, in silico identification of 11-oxotigogenin as a potential anti-AD compound paves the way for designing of chemical scaffolds to discover more potent BACE1 inhibitors.Graphical abstract.

An 11-year-old boy presented with a 1-year history of multiple comedonal lesions distributed over his body. The lesions (Figure 1) were densely distributed throughout his body. Ophthalmologic examination revealed hyperpigmented conjunctival mucosae and enlarged meibomian glands (Figure 2). His nails were also hyperpigmented. In addition, he had been coughing and had a fever, each present for a month. Significant laboratory studies included mild anemia (hemoglobin 11.6 gm%) and leukocytosis of 20,800. A chest x-ray was suggestive of interstitial lung disease. Similar lesions were present on his two siblings and parents. Additionally, his father had developed multiple, acne-like lesions, large abscesses, palmar and plantar peeling, and severe jaundice with hepatic failure. He had a history of frequent exposure to a pesticide mixed with a herbicide, as a result of leakage from a spray container. The patient was diagnosed with chloracne, based on the history, clinical features, and histologic examination.
