Trained personnel makes effective activities of our country's state sanitary-and-epidemiological service and its promising development. Hygienists and epidemiologists have been trained at specialized faculties for more than 70 years. The state sanitary-and-epidemiological service has recently taken measures to preserve and train highly qualified specialists. In accordance with the continuous trade education concept, postgraduate training is an essential link in the moulding of a well-educated physician who can work under the present conditions. Analyzing how the current governmental educational standard in the medico-prevention specialty is met has revealed some substantial shortcomings and sets a task to correct it in the context of better training.

The paper shows how ambient air pollution and disturbances of immunity and oral and nasal mucosal status and morbidity are related in various age groups of children.

[The relationship of cationic toxicity to the density of the corresponding chemical elements]. / Zavisimost' toksichnosti kationov ot sootvetstvuiushchikh khimicheskikh élementov.

The density of 46 chemical elements and LD50 of chloride cations were compared. There was a significant inverse relationship of LD50 to the density of 34 chemical elements. Quantitative ratios between these values for the elements studied were calculated.

Transformation of organic substances in ambient air was studied. Qualitative and quantitative changes of organic substances composition under the influence of meteorological factors (temperature, humidity, ultraviolet radiation) and nitrogen dioxide were observed.

The main principles and methodological approaches to the assessment of interrelations within the system "environment-health of the population" are presented. Conventional techniques of such an assessment, the area of their application and weak points are analysed. The focus is placed on the necessity of transition to a new level of research allowing assessment of environmental factors from the point of view of health hazard potential and possibility of health improvement at prepathological stages.
