RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Foot and ankle impairments are major issues in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Foot deformities often lead to skin disorders, such as callosities, ingrown toenails, and interdigital tinea pedis. This study was aimed at investigating the efficacy and limitations of foot care by experts in patients with RA. METHODS: Thirty-one patients with RA who began receiving foot care from nurses at our institution between September 2020 and February 2023 were included. Responses to a survey using the self-administered foot evaluation questionnaire (SAFE-Q) for patient-reported outcome measures were compared at baseline, the second visit (1.3 ± 0.5 months after baseline), and the third visit (3.6 ± 1.6 months after baseline). RESULTS: Scores for 'Pain and pain-related' and 'General health and well-being' components of SAFE-Q markedly improved after foot care. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in the scores for 'Physical functioning and daily living', 'Social functioning', and 'Shoe-related' components during observation periods. CONCLUSIONS: Foot care for rheumatoid feet is effective in providing pain relief and improving general health and well-being. However, physical and social functioning and footwear issues did not improve. Clinicians must understand the effects and limitations of foot care in patients with RA.

RESUMO

Polymyxin B (PMB) is beneficial for boar semen storage since it neutralizes the endotoxin of bacteria. However, the direct effect of PMB on boar spermatozoa has been unknown. This study aimed to examine the effect of PMB on acrosomal exocytosis, an essential process for successful fertilization in boar spermatozoa. Ejaculated spermatozoa stored with BTS extender at 17°C were washed and incubated with 0-100 µM PMB for 20 min and then examined for % total motililty, vigor grade and viability. None of the parameters was significantly different between 0 and 50 µM PMB with a gradual decline at higher concentrations. Thus the effect on acrosomal exocytosis was investigated at 0-50 µM of PMB. Spermatozoa were preincubated with PMB for 10 min, incubated for stimulation of acrosomal exocytosis with Ca2+ and the calcium ionophore A23187 and then fixed with glutaraldehyde at 5, 10 and 15 min. Preincubation with PMB at 0.01-50 µM and 0.05-50 µM resulted in significant enhancement of acrosomal exocytosis at 10 min and 15 min of incubation, respectively. Preincubation with PMB followed by incubation without A23187 did not affect acrosomal exocytosis. These results suggest that PMB exerts effects on the acrosomal exocytosis triggered by Ca2+ and A23187 in boar spermatozoa.

RESUMO

Uridine 5'-diphospho-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) liver activity was measured using estradiol-17ß as a substrate in dairy cows with follicular cysts. The activity was significantly lower than that in dairy cows with normal estrous cycles (P<0.01). Liver disorders, such as fatty liver and hepatitis, were observed in half cows with follicular cysts, and liver UGT activity was lower than that in cows with normal estrus cycles. In addition, the liver UGT activity was significantly lower in dairy cows with follicular cysts without liver disorders than in dairy cows with normal estrous cycles. Therefore, the cows were divided into those with low, middle and high liver UGT activities, and liver disorder complication rates were investigated. The complication rate was significantly higher in the low- (78.1%) than in the middle- (22.2%) and high-level (8.3%) groups, suggesting that liver disorders are closely associated with the development of follicular cysts in dairy cows and that steroid hormone metabolism is delayed because of reduced liver UGT activity, resulting in follicular cyst formation. We conclude that reduced estradiol-17ß glucuronidation in the liver and liver disorders are associated with follicular cyst occurrence in dairy cows.

RESUMO

We investigated the origin of perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA) in L1(0)-ordered FeNi alloy using first-principles density-functional calculations. We found that the perpendicular MCA of L1(0)-FeNi arises predominantly from the constituent Fe atoms, which is consistent with recent measurements of the anisotropy of the Fe orbital magnetic moment of L1(0)-FeNi by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Analysis of the second-order perturbation of the spin-orbit interaction indicates that spin-flip excitations between the occupied majority-spin and unoccupied minority-spin bands make a considerable contribution to the perpendicular MCA, as does the spin-conservation term for the minority-spin bands. Furthermore, the MCA energy increases as the in-plane lattice parameter decreases (increasing the axial ratio c/a). The increase in the MCA energy can be attributed to further enhancement of the spin-flip term due to modulation of the Fe d(xy) and d(x(2) - y(2)) orbital components around the Fermi level under compressive in-plane distortion.

RESUMO

The localization of complex glycoconjugates in the nasolabial glands of the Japanese deer (C. nippon yakushimae) was studied using various histochemical methods, including lectin histochemistry, viewed using both light and electron microscopy. The secretory epithelium and luminal secretion of the deer nasolabial glands exhibited neutral and acidic glycoconjugates with different saccharide residues (alpha-D-mannose, alpha-N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, beta-D-galactose, beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and sialic acid). Additionally, O-acetylated sialic acids were detectable in the glandular acini. The results obtained are discussed with regard to the specific functions of the glandular secretion, which may particularly improve water retention on the skin surface and protect against physical damage as well as microbial contamination. Furthermore, our results support the view of a salivary nature of this gland type.

RESUMO

The distribution of complex glycoconjugates and antimicrobial substances in the ceruminous glands of the horse (Equus przewalskii f. dom., type: pony) was studied using carbohydrate histochemical and immunohistochemical methods. The epithelial cells and luminal secretion of these glands exhibited considerable amounts of glycoconjugates with various saccharide residues, such as alpha-D-mannose, alpha-L-fucose, beta-D-galactose, beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and sialic acid, including O-acetylated sialic acid. Several sugars (alpha-D-mannose, alpha-L-fucose, and beta-D-galactose) were also detectable in the secretion of sebaceous glands present. Additionally, lysozyme and the peptide group of beta-defensins are demonstrated as products of the apocrine ceruminous glands and sebaceous glands. The results obtained are discussed with regard to the functional significance of the glandular secretions. It is suggested that the complex carbohydrates, lysozyme and beta-defensins found in the ceruminous gland secretions are involved in the function of cerumen as a general antimicrobial protective agent in the external auditory canal.

RESUMO

In ultrasonographic diagnosis of ovarian disorders and the estrous cycle in sows, transverse observation of the uterus yielded more characteristic findings than observation of sagittal sections. Transverse ultrasonography revealed that the low progesterone (P) type uterus showed a round structure, while the high P type uterus showed a flattened structure. These results corresponded well with rectal palpation findings: the low P type uterus had a hard, pipe-like structure and the high P type a soft, balloon-like structure. For gilts, we employed a minimum convex type transrectal prostate probe that had an approximately 18 cm insertion handle. The images of the uterus obtained thereby were a similar to those obtained from sows. The above results suggest that it should be possible to diagnose and treat many ovarian disorders in sows and gilts based only on the ultrasonograhic findings. In short, ultrasonograhic findings of a round structure of the uterine wall might be an indication for PMSG (pregnant mare serum gonadotropin) treatment, while findings of a flattened structure might be an indication for PGF(2) (alpha) administration.
