RESUMO

Since 1993 infant mortality rates have generally decreased in Russia due to the decline in early neonatal mortality. Late fetal mortality rates have also decreased. These facts seem to be unexpected since the health statistics registers a decline in the health status of pregnant women. It is noteworthy that in some of Russia's regions, the average perinatal mortality rate is related to the lowest level of its early neonatal component. Against this background, it is useful to remind that Russia's state statistics mainly registers perinatal death of infants or fetuses weighing 1000 grams or more. This understates the official early neonatal mortality rate by one third and makes possible any manipulations in reports.

RESUMO

Data are submitted of a 10-year prospective follow-up of the male population of Kiev showing the level of mortality to be clearly related to the epidemiologic situation in the study area. An assessment is given of time trends in the incidence of most important risk factors and pathological conditions, showing a tendency of an unfavourable shift of the "risk profile" in the Kiev population.

RESUMO

There has been studied the actual dietary intake of copper and zinc in the open male population aged 20-59 years old (n = 1556) consisting of residents of Kiev. An age-associated tendency has been disclosed towards lowering copper intake and increase in the diet content of zinc. A correlation has been established between low intake of copper, high content of zinc and prevalence of ischemic heart disease and of such risk factors for its onset as dyslipoproteinemia, arterial hypertension and excessive body mass.

RESUMO

1556 of men living in Kiev aged 20-59 years were examined to evaluate interrelationship between the dietary intakes of Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Cu, Zn and level of arterial blood pressure (AP). Dietary intake was studied by 24-h recall methodology. Systolic AP > 160 mm Hg and/or diastolic AP > 90 mm Hg were referred as arterial hypertension (AH). It was shown that high dietary intakes of Ca or Zn were related with the higher rate of AH. At low level of dietary intake of Mg, Cu or P the prevalence of AH was seen in 1.8-2 times more often than at high level of intake of these micronutrients. Mean systolic AP had trend to increasing and diastolic AP was significant higher at low level of dietary intake of P. Correction of dietary intake of microelements should be used in preventive measures of AH.

RESUMO

A study was made of the prevalence of coronary heart disease, risk factors (arterial hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hypo-alpha-cholesterolemia, overweight, tobacco-smoking) and of the relation of coronary heart disease to the risk factors in men aged 20 to 39 years and 40 to 54 years, living in 8 cities of the USSR. The study was carried out on material of random representative samples. It has been established that the prevalence of coronary heart disease and risk factors is bigger among the populations living in the European part of the USSR and Siberia, being lower among the populations of Central Asia. The relationship between coronary heart disease and the risk factors is pronounced to a greater measure in arterial hypertension and overweight and to a less degree in other conditions. Besides, the relation of coronary heart disease to the risk factors is marked to a much greater measure among men belonging to the senior age groups.

RESUMO

The method of dietetic interview was used in a strictly standardized epidemiological investigation of a random sample of males aged from 30 to 59 years (n-2537) in Kiev. A dependence has been revealed between the use of alcohol and disorders in the character of nutrition unfavourable in respect to coronary heart disease. A relationship has been established between the alcohol use and the incidence rate of such risk factors of coronary heart disease as hyperlipoproteinemia, excessive body mass, smoking, and the incidence of myocardial infarction. No relationship was recorded between alcohol kind and dose and the incidence of risk factors of coronary heart disease.
