RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Photobiomodulation with the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) seems to be a promising option for long COVID. This retrospective study evaluates the efficiency of LED irradiation in the treatment of TE in the course of long COVID in patients with and without androgenetic alopecia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective single-centre chart review of patients with post-COVID hair loss was performed. 140 patients enrolled to the study were divided into four groups depending on the type of alopecia and treatment: 1) telogen effluvium with LED therapy (TE LED+), 2) telogen effluvium without LED therapy (TE LED-), 3) telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia with LED therapy (TE+AGA LED+), and 4) telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia without LED therapy (TE+AGA LED-). Clinical and trichoscopic parameters were compared. RESULTS: After 12 weeks, cessation of hair loss and a negative hair pull test were more common in TE LED+ and TE+AGA LED+ in comparison to the patients without LED therapy (p<0.001, p=0.035, respectively). An increased number of thick hairs and an increased number of hairs within follicular units were more common in patients treated with LED irradiation, regardless of the type of alopecia, compared to the patients without LED therapy. CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed that LED therapy is safe, well tolerated and seems to be a promising therapeutic option for TE in patients with long COVID. It can be used as adjuvant therapy leading to faster reduction of hair loss, enhancing hair regrowth as well as hair shaft thickness and density.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a therapeutic option for low-risk basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of topical PDT in the treatment of superficial BCC (sBCC) using two different photosensitizers: aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride (ALA-HCl) in a gel formulation with a lipid nanoemulsion (ALA-HCl in gel) and ALA methyl ester hydrochloride (MAL-HCl) in a cream formulation (MAL-HCl in cream). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 21 patients were treated twice with a one week interval between treatments. The formulations were applied onto lesions: 10 patients were treated with MAL-HCl in cream, and 11 with ALA-HCl in gel. After three hours of incubation and removing the preparations, fluorescence was assessed. The skin areas were then irradiated with red light 630 ± 5 nm. RESULTS: At the follow-up visit 12 weeks after the second treatment, complete clinical remission was found in 82% after ALA-HCl in gel and in 80% after MAL-HCl in cream. An excellent cosmetic result was found in 96% of patients after MALHCl in cream and in 100% after ALA-HCl in gel. Faster skin healing and less post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation during follow-up visits was observed after treatment with ALA-HCl in gel. CONCLUSIONS: Both formulations - ALA-HCl in gel and MAL-HCl in cream - were highly effective photosensitisers for PDT. The advantage of ALA-HCl in a gel formulation with a lipid nanoemulsion was faster skin healing, resulting in better cosmetic results.

RESUMO

Coronary artery disease (CAD) continues to be a foremost contributor to global mortality, and the quest for modifiable risk factors could improve prophylactic strategies. Recent studies suggest a significant role of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) deficiency in atheromatous plaque formation. Furthermore, hair was previously described as a valuable source of information on elemental burden during the 6-8 week period before sampling. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of correlation between the extent of CAD evaluated with the SYNergy Between PCI With TAXUS and the Cardiac Surgery (SYNTAX) score with Cu and Zn content in hair samples, as well as with the Cu/Zn ratio in a cohort of 130 patients. Our findings describe a statistically significant inverse correlation between Cu content and the Cu/Zn ratio in hair samples and the extent of CAD. In contrast, no significant correlation was found between Zn content and the extent of CAD. Considering the scarcity of existing data on the subject, the analysis of hair samples could yield a novel insight into elemental deficiencies and their potential influence on CAD extent.

RESUMO

Methane is the most frequently analyzed gas with different concentrations ranging from single ppm or ppb to 100%. There are a wide range of applications for gas sensors including urban uses, industrial uses, rural measurements, and environment monitoring. The most important applications include the measurement of anthropogenic greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and methane leak detection. In this review, we discuss common optical methods used for detecting methane such as non-dispersive infrared (NIR) technology, direct tunable diode spectroscopy (TDLS), cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS), cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS), lidar techniques, and laser photoacoustic spectroscopy. We also present our own designs of laser methane analyzers for various applications (DIAL, TDLS, NIR).

RESUMO

The article presents the history of the development and the current state of the apparatus for the detection of interferents and biological warfare simulants in the air with the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) method. The LIF method is the most sensitive spectroscopic method and also enables the measurement of single particles of biological aerosols and their concentration in the air. The overview covers both the on-site measuring instruments and remote methods. The spectral characteristics of the biological agents, steady-state spectra, excitation-emission matrices, and their fluorescence lifetimes are presented. In addition to the literature, we also present our own detection systems for military applications.

RESUMO

The prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) increases every year; however, the impact of microelements on its underlying cause-atherosclerosis-is still unclear. Copper plays numerous regulatory roles in cardiovascular health and was suggested to influence the classic risk factors for CAD. The copper-to-zinc-ratio (Cu/Zn-ratio) reflects systemic oxidative stress-one of the factors in the complex pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Hair incorporates metal ions during its growth; thus, it reflects the metal exposure that occurred over the last 4-8 weeks. The aim of the presented study was to verify the association between Cu and Cu/Zn-ratio content and the occurrence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in the hair of 133 patients who underwent coronary angiography due to suspected ACS. Additionally, association between Cu and Cu/Zn-ratio and selected risk factors for CAD was analyzed. Neither Cu nor Cu/Zn-ratio levels were associated with the occurrence of ACS, regardless of its type (UA/NSTEMI/STEMI). We did not find a significant association between Cu content in hair and risk factors for CAD. The Cu/Zn-ratio in hair was significantly correlated only with body mass index. The relationship of Cu content and Cu/Zn-ratio in hair with CAD, its risk factors and ACS appears to be complex and requires further well-designed research.

RESUMO

The aim of the presented study was a comparative analysis of the polymerization kinetics of dental resin-based composites currently used in dentistry in different environmental conditions (irradiance, activation time, layer thickness). The photopolymerization kinetics of eleven dental resins were investigated using a Woodpecker LED source. The DC was measured by FTIR in transmission mode and attenuated total reflection (ATR) from 5 s to 7 days. In the transmission mode, the spectra from parallel optical layers (about 0.2 mm thick) of samples placed between the KBr crystals were recorded. In the reflection mode, an ATR attachment with a diamond window was used. The DC calculation method was applied based on the application of a monomer absorption band at 1638 cm-1 (stretching vibration double bond C=C of the vinyl group) without using a reference band. The data were analyzed by performing an ANOVA test comparison between sample groups at the significance level α = 0.05. For all tested materials, the polymerization kinetics consist of three stages. The fastest stage occurs during the irradiation, and the achieved DC value is 70-75% of the maximum value 5 s after the irradiation. Another 15-20% DC increase at a moderate speed takes about 15-20 min. There is also a very slow further increase in DC of 5-10% within 5 days after irradiation. For 8 out of the 11 tested fillings, the optimal photopolymerization conditions are as follows: a power density of 400 or 1000 mW/cm2; an exposure time of 10 s; and a thickness of the irradiated resin layer of up to 2 mm. The influence of various conditions and factors on the reaction kinetics is dominant only in the early, rapid phase of the conversion. After longer times, the DC values gradually level out under different light conditions. The DC of the dental resins are dependent on the irradiance, light source, filler type, time after irradiance, and monomer thickness.

RESUMO

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide. Although zinc (Zn) was reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and protective properties in CVDs, its association with coronary artery disease (CAD) is still unclear. As methods commonly used to assess Zn levels in blood and urine do not show the full picture of the microelement supply, in this study, the nutritional status of Zn in patients with angiographically confirmed CAD was assessed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. We found no association between Zn and the severity of CAD evaluated with the Coronary Artery Surgery Study Score (p = 0.67). There were no statistically significant differences in Zn levels between patients with acute coronary syndrome and those with stable CAD (p = 0.937). A statically significant negative correlation was observed between Zn content and serum triglyceride concentration (p < 0.05). Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were found to have a significantly lower hair Zn content compared to non-diabetic individuals (p < 0.01). The role of Zn in the pathogenesis of CAD and its complications need further well-designed research as the moderation and supplementation of Zn dietary intake could be a simple intervention to reduce the CVDs risk.

RESUMO

Erythropoietic protoporphyria is a hereditary defect in heme synthesis, causing protoporphyrin deposition and phototoxic reactions after exposure to light, especially at a wavelength of about 400 nm. Sensitivity to light may cause postoperative complications. Therefore, in open surgery protective filters are employed on surgical luminaires. The dangers of laparoscopy are little understood and the intensity of the light used can be high. To protect against phototoxic injury, we inserted an OG 530 filter in the video track. This filter blocks wavelengths below 470 nm. Three cholecystectomies and one sigmoidectomies were performed laparoscopically. The procedures were uneventful, and the patients suffered no adverse reactions, including phototoxic symptoms. The filter had a moderate influence on color perception and caused no significant restrictions on working conditions. We consider that it is appropriate to develop a relevant design to meet the suitable requirements for a durable filter holder in the laparoscopic video track.

RESUMO

Fluorescence is the most sensitive spectroscopic method of analysis and fluorescence methods. However, classical analysis requires sampling. There are new needs for real-time analyses of biological materials, without the need for sampling. This article presents examples of proprietary applications of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in medicine with such methods. A classic example is the analysis of photosensitizers using the photodynamic treatment method (PDT). The level and kinetics of accumulation and excretion of sensitizers in the body are examined, as well as the optimal exposure time after the application of compounds. The LIF method is also used to analyze endogenous fluorophores; it has been used to detect neoplasms, e.g., lung cancer or gynecological and dermatological diseases. Furthermore, it is used for the diagnosis of early stages of tooth decay or detection of fungi. The article will present the construction of sensors based on the LIF method-fiber laser spectrometers and investigated fluorescence spectra in individual applications. Examples of fluorescence imaging, e.g., dermatological, and dental diagnostics and measuring systems will be presented. The advantage of the method is it has greater sensitivity and easily detects lesions early compared to the methods used in observing the material in reflected light.

RESUMO

The main aim of the study was to implement the most reliable method of measuring the degrees of conversion during photopolymerization of dental fillings. Contrary to the methods used so far, the method is based only on comparison with the monomer absorbance spectrum without reference bands. Another aim of the study was to prepare a comparative analysis of the polymerization kinetics of dental resins under various light sources and different environmental conditions (irradiance, light dose, temperature), with estimation of the degrees of conversion (DC) of the resins being the main metric. HRi Universal Enamel (UE2) and HRi Universal Dentine (UD2) were examined under two different types of light sources used in dentistry, LED and halogen. DC was measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in transmission mode from 5 s up to 7 days. Spectra were recorded from the parallel optical layers of samples that were placed between the KBr crystals. The results are expressed by the changes in the absorbance spectrum during the polymerization and the calculated conversion rates. The results of each experiment were averaged from three separate measurements of three samples, during which the samples were illuminated under identical conditions. The data were analyzed by performing ANOVA test comparisons between sample groups at the significance level α = 0.05. The degree of conversion of the UD2 resin was higher than that of UE2 for each experimental condition, but there was no statistically significant difference between the DC of those materials (p > 0.05). There was statistically significant difference (p < 0.01) in the DC caused by LED and halogen light sources producing the same light doses (38 J/cm2). This was the result of different features of light transmission to the filler in the resin composite. The efficacy of the LED source is twice as high as that of the halogen light source. Maximal DC without any other differences in conditions, such as resin type or light source, reached around 70% for temperatures of 22−37 °C. For 37 °C, this took 24 h, which is a contrast to the 7 days it took for 23 °C. The influences of different conditions and factors on reaction kinetics are only strong in the early and the rapid stage of conversion. The optimal time of irradiance using either light source is 20 s for a monolayer, and its thickness should not exceed 2 mm.

RESUMO

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is safe and effective in the treatment of patients with actinic keratosis (AK). The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy, tolerability and cosmetic outcome of topical PDT in the treatment of AKs with three forms of photosensitizers: 5-Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride (ALA-HCl), 5-Aminolevulinate methyl ester hydrochloride (MAL-HCl) and 5-Aminolevulinate phosphate (ALA-P). The formulations were applied onto selected scalp/face areas. Fluorescence was assessed with a FotoFinder Dermoscope 800 attachment. Skin areas were irradiated with Red Beam Pro+, Model APRO (MedLight GmbH, Herford, Germany). Applied treatments were assessed during the PDT as well as 7 days and 12 weeks after its completion. Ninety-four percent of patients rated obtained cosmetic effect excellent. The efficacy of applied PSs did not differ significantly. However, pain intensity during the PDT procedure was significantly lower in the area treated with ALA-P (5.8 on average) in comparison to the areas treated with ALA-HCl or MAL-HCl (7.0 on average on 0-10 scale). Obtained results show that ALA-P may undergo more selective accumulation than ALA-HCl and MAL-HCl. Our promising results suggest that PDT with the use of ALA-P in AK treatment may be an advantageous alternative to the already used ALA-HCl and MAL-HCl.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Eyebrow loss in the course of frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is becoming a growing issue among older females. It has a considerable negative impact on patients' quality of life. Since there is no standardized treatment, photobiomodulation with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) could be an option. Here we assess, for the first time, the efficacy of LED therapy in the treatment of eyebrow loss in females with FFA. METHODS: 16 female patients with FFA aged 60-74 years were enrolled in the study. LED therapy was performed once a week for a 10-week session. The LEDs' effectiveness was assessed at the baseline, after 10 irradiations, and 6 months after the end of treatment during a follow-up visit. RESULTS: The therapy was well tolerated. After 10 irradiations, the total eyebrow hair count increased significantly, as did the number of thick hairs and mid-thick hairs (p = 0.002, p = 0.002, and p = 0.044, respectively). During the follow-up visit, the total number of eyebrow hairs remained significantly higher than before treatment (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: The study revealed that LED therapy seems to be a novel and promising therapeutic option for eyebrow loss in patients with FFA. It is safe and well tolerated and leads to clinically and cosmetically acceptable improvement.

RESUMO

Fossil resins from Miocene coal deposit (Sarolangun mine, Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia) have been analysed using spectroscopic methods: Raman Spectroscopy (RS), Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR), Fluorescence Spectroscopy (FS), and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) in order to describe their diagnostic features. Simultaneously, glessite, a fossil resin from Upper Oligocene Bitterfeld deposit (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany), originating from similar botanical sources (i.e. angiosperms) was tested with the same analytical methods in order to find similarities and differences between the resins. The resins differ in colour, transparency and amounts of inclusions (resins from Sumatra-yellow, and transparent with few inclusions; glessite-brown-red, translucent with wealth of inclusions). In general, the IR and RS spectra of these resins are very similar, probably because the glessite colour-changing additives can be very subtle and non-observable in the infrared region. The RS spectra revealed also a slight difference in intensity ratio of the 1650/1450 cm-1 bands (0.56 and 0.68 for Sumatra and Germany resins, respectively), indicating a differences in their maturation process. The resins from Sumatra seem to be more mature than glessite from Germany. The excitation-emission (EM-EX) and synchronous spectra showed unique, chemical compositions of these resins, which are different one from another. The GC-MS data for Sumatran resins, dominated by sesquiterpenoids and triterpenoids (amyrin), confirmed their botanical origin (angiosperms as their biological affinities). The sesquiterpenoid biomarkers with cadine-structures suggested the glessite underwent more advanced polymerization processes, which does not correlate with its RS spectrum. The geological factors, the environmental conditions of resin deposition, and later various diagenesis processes may have influenced the maturation and crosslinking of compounds. Despite the genetic similarity of the resins from various part of the world, Sumatra and Germany, advanced techniques such as Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and Fluorescence Spectroscopy were the most useful to find the differences between them. These differences are predominantly a result of different diagenetic transformations of the resins.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Photobiomodulation therapy with the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is a fast growing therapeutic technique with a wide range of dermatologic indications. Recently it has been suggested that LED therapy could be beneficial in scarring alopecia. AIM: Assessment of the efficacy of novel superluminescent diodes (sLED) with a "soft- start" as an adjuvant treatment in selected types of scarring alopecia. METHODS: This pilot study included 16 female patients: 8 with frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) and 8 with lichen planopilaris (LPP), aged 41-76 years with a stable treatment, either topical or systemic. In all patients, sLED irradiations were performed once a week for a 10-week period. The sLEDs' effectiveness was assessed clinically and using trichoscopy. RESULTS: The therapy was well tolerated. Both Lichen Planopilaris Activity Index (LPPAI) and Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia Severity Score (FFASS) were significantly reduced after the therapy (p = 0.012, p = 0.017 respectively). Within the treated area, the number of thick hairs significantly increased after the therapy (p = 0.009), whereas the number of medium-sized hairs and thin hairs did not change significantly (p = 0.836, p = 0.675 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Irradiations with sLEDs were demonstrated to be safe and well tolerated. This noninvasive therapy leads to the reduction of subjective symptoms, and improve the outcome both in FFA and in LPP. This effective novel light source can be used as an adjuvant therapy in patients with chronic LPP or FFA. However, further studies including a larger study group and a control group are needed to evaluate the long-term effects of the therapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Superluminescent diodes (sLED) appear to be an innovative and promising light source in photodynamic therapy (PDT), especially in actinic keratosis (AK) lesions treatment. AIM: Assessment of tolerability and efficacy of sLED in topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) PDT of AK lesions. METHODS: 27 patients received ALA PDT with the use of sLED with "soft starter". RESULTS: Tolerability of sLED lamp depended on the treated lesions field (extension) rather than on their thickness. In contrast sLED lamp efficacy depended on AK lesions thickness. CONCLUSION: sLED PDT is highly effective in the treatment of grade I and II AK lesions. Grade III AK lesions require further treatment.

RESUMO

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) consists of three elements: photosensitizer, light and oxygen. The photosensitizer has the property of selective accumulation in abnormal or infected tissues without causing any damage to the healthy cells. This innovative therapeutic method has already been successfully adapted in many fields of medicine, e.g. dermatology, gynecology, urology and cancer therapy. Dentistry is also beginning to incorporate photodisinfection for treatment of the oral cavity. The antibacterial and fungicidal properties of the photosensitizer have been used to achieve better results in root canal treatment, periodontal therapy and the eradication of candidiasis in prosthodontics. The aim of this article is to discuss the effectiveness of photodynamic methods in the diagnosis and therapy of selected oral diseases. Scientific data and published papers regarding the antibacterial properties of PDT will be subjected to analysis. Photodynamic therapy will be discussed as an alternative treatment protocol in oncology, endodontics, periodontology and other fields of dentistry.

RESUMO

The classification of dry powder samples is an important step in managing the consequences of terrorist incidents. Fluorescence decays of these samples (vegetative bacteria, bacterial endospores, fungi, albumins and several flours) were measured with stroboscopic technique using an EasyLife LS system PTI. Three pulsed nanosecond LED sources, generating 280, 340 and 460nm were employed for samples excitation. The usefulness of a new 460nm light source for fluorescence measurements of dry microbial cells has been demonstrated. The principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) have been used for classification of dry biological samples. It showed that the single excitation wavelength was not sufficient for differentiation of biological samples of diverse origin. However, merging fluorescence decays from two or three excitation wavelengths allowed classification of these samples. An experimental setup allowing the practical implementation of this method for the real time fluorescence decay measurement was designed. It consisted of the LED emitting nanosecond pulses at 280nm and two fast photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for signal detection in two fluorescence bands simultaneously. The positive results of the dry powder samples measurements confirmed that the fluorescence decay-based technique could be a useful tool for fast classification of the suspected "white powders" performed by the first responders.

RESUMO

Spectroscopic techniques are under investigation on possibility of differentiation of airborne particles. This paper describes pollen discrimination among others bio-particles in laboratory conditions. Pollen samples were characterized with UV-Vis fluorescence, drift and KBr pellet techniques of infrared spectroscopy. Principal Component Analysis of UV-Vis fluorescence and FTIR spectra revealed that pollens can be distinguished from other bio-materials with use of these methods. Both methods resulted in similar classification capability. Combined FTIR and fluorescence data analysis did not improve the discrimination between pollen allergens and other airborne biological materials.

RESUMO

Rapid detection and discrimination of dangerous biological materials such as bacteria and their spores has become a security aim of considerable importance. Various analytical methods, including FTIR spectroscopy combined with statistical analysis have been used to identify vegetative bacteria, bacterial spores and background interferants. The present work discusses the application of FTIR technique performed in reflectance mode using Horizontal Attenuated Total Reflectance accessory (HATR) to the discrimination of biological materials. In comparison with transmission technique the HATR is more rapid and do not require the sample destruction, simultaneously giving similar absorbance bands. HATR-FTIR results combined with statistical analysis PCA and HCA demonstrate that this combination provides novel and accurate microbial identification technique.
