Objectives: The effect of social media on COVID-19 vaccination behavior is sub-Saharan Africa is unclear. We conducted a study to determine social media use among a random nationally representative sample of adults in Uganda and assessed the association between recent social media use and COVID-19 vaccination uptake. Methods: We used data from the 2020 general population survey in Uganda, the Population-based HIV Impact Assessment Survey, to identify a probability sample for a mobile phone survey and included nonphone owners in the phone survey by asking phone owners to pass the phone. Results: In March 2022, of the 1022 survey participants, 213 (20%) did not own a mobile phone, 842 (80%) owned a mobile phone, of whom 199 (24%) indicated social media use, and 643 (76%) of whom did not use social media. Among all participants, the most frequent source of COVID-19 vaccine information was radio. Overall, 62% reported receiving the COVID-19 vaccination. The multivariable logistic regression model found that social media use was not associated with vaccination status. Conclusion: Social media users in this population sample from Uganda-who were mainly young, urban residents with higher educational attainment-continue to utilize TV, radio and health care workers for public health messages, thus the Government of Uganda should continue to conduct public health communication through these mediums.

Importance: Cannabis use is increasingly viewed by adolescents as not harmful. Youths with cannabis use disorder (CUD) are recognized by clinicians as being at risk for adverse outcomes, yet little is known about the associations between subclinical cannabis use (ie, nondisordered cannabis use [NDCU]) and adverse psychosocial events. Objective: To describe the prevalence and demographics of NDCU and to compare associations of cannabis use with adverse psychosocial events among adolescents with no cannabis use, NDCU, and CUD. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional study used a nationally representative sample derived from the 2015 to 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Participants were adolescents aged 12 to 17 years, separated into 3 distinct groups: nonuse (no recent cannabis use), NDCU (recent cannabis use below diagnostic threshold), and CUD. Analysis was conducted from January to May 2022. Exposures: CUD, NDCU, or cannabis nonuse. NDCU was defined as endorsing recent cannabis use but not meeting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition) (DSM-5) CUD criteria. CUD was defined using DSM-5 criteria. Main Outcomes and Measures: The main outcomes were prevalence of adolescents meeting criteria for NDCU and associations between adverse psychosocial events and NDCU, adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: The 68 263 respondents (mean [SD] age, 14.5 [1.7] years; 34 773 [50.9%] males) included in the analysis represented an estimated yearly mean of 25 million US adolescents during 2015 to 2019. Among respondents, 1675 adolescents (2.5%) had CUD, 6971 adolescents (10.2%) had NDCU, and 59 617 adolescents (87.3%) reported nonuse. Compared with nonusers, individuals with NDCU had approximately 2 to 4 times greater odds of all adverse psychosocial events examined, including major depression (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.86; 95% CI, 1.67-2.08), suicidal ideation (aOR, 2.08; 95% CI, 1.88-2.29), slower thoughts (aOR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.58-1.96), difficulty concentrating (aOR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.65-2.00), truancy (aOR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.67-2.16), low grade point average (aOR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.62-2.00), arrest (aOR, 4.15; 95% CI, 3.17-5.43), fighting (aOR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.80-2.31), and aggression (aOR, 2.16; 95% CI, 1.79-2.62). Prevalence of adverse psychosocial events was greatest for adolescents with CUD (range, 12.6% to 41.9%), followed by NDCU (range, 5.2% to 30.4%), then nonuse (range, 0.8% to 17.3%). Conclusions and Relevance: In this cross-sectional study of US adolescents, past-year NDCU was approximately 4 times as prevalent as past-year CUD. A stepwise gradient association was observed for odds of adverse psychosocial events between adolescent NDCU and CUD. In the context of US normalization of cannabis use, prospective research into NDCU is necessary.

PURPOSE: To assess the association of neighborhood demographic and socioeconomic characteristics with COVID-19 incidence and mortality in New York City (NYC) over the first two waves of outbreak. METHODS: This retrospective study used neighborhood-level data from 177 modified ZIP code tabulation areas in NYC between March 01, 2020 and April 30, 2021. RESULTS: Neighborhoods that were most severely impacted in wave 1 were also more affected in wave 2. Neighborhoods with a higher percentage of seniors (≥75 years), males, Black and Hispanic population, and large-size households had higher incidence rates of COVID-19 in wave 1 but not in wave 2. Neighborhoods with higher percentage of Black and Hispanic population and lower insurance coverage had higher death rate per capita and case fatality ratio in wave 1, and neighborhoods with higher percentage of Black and Asian population had elevated case fatality ratio in wave 2. Median household income was negatively associated with incidence rate and death rate per capita but not associated with case fatality ratio in both waves. Neighborhoods with more seniors had higher death rate and case fatality ratio in both waves. CONCLUSIONS: Neighborhood disparities in COVID-19 incidence and mortality across NYC neighborhoods were dynamic during the first two waves of outbreak.

RESUMO

High resolution coherent multidimensional spectroscopy has the ability to reduce congestion and automatically sort peaks by species and quantum numbers, even for simple mixtures and molecules that are extensively perturbed. The two-dimensional version is relatively simple to carry out, and the results are easy to interpret, but its ability to deal with severe spectral congestion is limited. Three-dimensional spectroscopy is considerably more complicated and time-consuming than two-dimensional spectroscopy, but it provides the spectral resolution needed for more challenging systems. This paper describes how to design high resolution coherent 3D spectroscopy experiments so that a small number of strategically positioned 2D scans may be used instead of recording all the data required for a 3D plot. This faster and simpler approach uses new pattern recognition methods to interpret the results. Key factors that affect the resulting patterns include the scanning strategy and the four wave mixing process. Optimum four wave mixing (FWM) processes and scanning strategies have been identified, and methods for identifying the FWM process from the observed patterns have been developed. Experiments based on nonparametric FWM processes provide significant pattern recognition and efficiency advantages over those based on parametric processes. Alternative scanning strategies that use synchronous scanning and asynchronous scanning to create new kinds of patterns have also been identified. Rotating the resulting patterns in 3D space leads to an insight into similarities in the patterns produced by different FWM processes.

RESUMO

A new method for generating high-resolution coherent 3D (HRC3D) spectra has been developed that is based on the nonparametric four-wave mixing process MENS (multiply enhanced nonparametric spectroscopy). The resulting spectra have rotational patterns that are different from those produced previously using the parametric four-wave mixing process CARS. A change in the rotational pattern facilitates a new approach to scanning where orthogonal 2D slices in 3D space are combined to make a 3D rotational pattern. This 3D rotational pattern may then be used to calculate rotational constants for levels in the excited electronic state and upper regions of the ground electronic state. Unlike previous forms of HRC3D spectroscopy, this new approach provides a stand-alone rapid and simple tool for the rotational analysis of electronic spectra without the need for obtaining peak positions or molecular constants from other (1D or 2D) forms of spectroscopy.
