RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: We conducted translation and psychometric validation of a self-administered, 22-item dichotomous response-based questionnaire to identify nocturia aetiologies and co-morbidities in adult patients. METHODS: The Targeting the individual's Aetiology of Nocturia to Guide Outcomes (TANGO) questionnaire was forward- and backward-translated, then finalised using a standardised methodology. The resulting version, a Chinese version of the TANGO [TANGO (CV)], was evaluated for internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, convergent validity, criterion validity, and discriminant validity via responses from 65 participants (46 men and 19 women; mean age, 67 years, range, 50-88), in comparison with other validated questionnaires and a 4-day bladder/sleep diary. RESULTS: Only 0.4% of responses were missing; 3% of participants required assistance with comprehension. The Kuder-Richardson Formula 20 (KR-20) coefficient for the whole tool was 0.711. Kappa values for individual domains and the whole tool varied from 0.871 to 0.866, indicating satisfactory test-retest reliability. There was strong agreement between the sum of positive responses to each domain and the whole tool (intra-class correlation coefficient=0.878-1.000). Modest correlations (ρ=0.4-0.6) were detected between the tool and bladder/sleep diary-based parameters for convergent validity. Criterion validity was confirmed for each domain and the whole tool [ρ=0.287-0.687]. In receiver operating characteristic analysis, the tool could distinguish patients (≥2 nocturia episodes/night) from controls (≤1 nocturia episode/night) [Youden's J statistic=0.453, area under the curve=0.818, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.683-0.953] and patients with significant nocturia distress from patients with mild nocturia distress (Youden's J statistic=0.398, area under the curve=0.729, 95% CI=0.581-0.878). CONCLUSION: The TANGO (CV) was formally crossculturally adapted and translated. Its psychometric properties (except sensitivity to change) were validated.

RESUMO

A ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) cell with continuously alignment structure is realized by a polarization hologram method for fabricating a Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) lens, which is employed as a concave/convex lens. The PB phase can be maintained by the optical axis in-plane switching; meanwhile, its diffraction efficiency can be tuned in a certain range by electrically controlling azimuthal angle and optical biaxiality of the smectic helical structure realized by deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystals. The measured diffraction efficiency of the fabricated device is up to 87% and the response time can be 300µs with a low electric voltage. The FLC PB lens can have potential applications in existing optical devices and the realization of FLC with continuous alignment structure can be further used for other LC-based optical devices.

RESUMO

In this article, we disclose a fork grating (FG) based on the photo-aligned ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC). The Digital Micro-mirror Device based system is used as a dynamic photomask to generated different holograms. Because of controlled anchoring energy, the photo alignment process offers optimal conditions for the multi-domain FLC alignment. Two different electro-optical modes namely DIFF/TRANS and DIFF/OFF switchable modes have been proposed where the diffraction can be switched either to no diffraction or to a completely black state, respectively. The FLC FG shows high diffraction efficiency and fast response time of 50µs that is relatively faster than existing technologies. Thus, the FLC FG may pave a good foundation toward optical vertices generation and manipulation that could find applications in a variety of devices.

RESUMO

In this Letter, an advanced multilayer photo-aligned liquid crystal polymer (LCP) thin-film structure with multiple optical functions is introduced. Within each LCP layer, a spatially distribution of local optical axes can be controlled by a patterned photo-alignment layer. As an embodiment of the proposed structure, a two-layer structure with pixelated controlled light-propagation directions and polarizations has been studied, which has shown the potential to be used as a photomask for generating multi-domain photo-alignment structures with a single exposure step. The combination of the multilayer structure with patterned photo-alignment technology provides a new perspective of designing optical structures for polarizing photonics applications.

RESUMO

In this Letter, we disclose a fast switchable Fresnel zone lens (FZL) by confining the ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) in multiple microscopically defined photo-aligned alignment domains. The photo-alignment (PA) offers good control on the anchoring energy (W) by mean of irradiation doses (ID) and thus excellent alignment for FLCs. Two operational modes of the FLCFZL, i.e., FOCUS/OFF and FOCUS/DEFOCUS, were demonstrated. The proposed diffracting element provides fast response time, high diffraction efficiency (η), with saturated electro-optical (EO) operations up to high frequency (≈2 kHz). Thus, the proposed FLCFZLs with simple fabrication open several opportunities to improve the quality of existing devices and to find new applications.

RESUMO

Optically rewritable liquid crystal display (ORWLCD) is a concept based on the optically addressed bi-stable display that does not need any power to hold the image after being uploaded. Recently, the demand for the 3D image display has increased enormously. Several attempts have been made to achieve 3D image on the ORWLCD, but all of them involve high complexity for image processing on both hardware and software levels. In this Letter, we disclose a concept for the 3D-ORWLCD by dividing the given image in three parts with different optic axis. A quarter-wave plate is placed on the top of the ORWLCD to modify the emerging light from different domains of the image in different manner. Thereafter, Polaroid glasses can be used to visualize the 3D image. The 3D image can be refreshed, on the 3D-ORWLCD, in one-step with proper ORWLCD printer and image processing, and therefore, with easy image refreshing and good image quality, such displays can be applied for many applications viz. 3D bi-stable display, security elements, etc.

RESUMO

In this paper, we present a novel design configuration of double DHFLC wave plate continuous tunable Lyot filter, which exhibits a rapid response time of 185 µs, while the high-contrast ratio between the passband and stop band is maintained throughout a wide tunable range. A DHFLC tunable filter with a high-contrast ratio is attractive for realizing high-speed optical processing devices, such as multispectral and hyperspectral imaging systems, real-time remote sensing, field sequential color display, and wavelength demultiplexing in the metro network. In this work, an experimental prototype for a single-stage DHFLC Lyot filter of this design has been fabricated using photoalignment technology. We have demonstrated that the filter has a continuous tunable range of 30 nm for a blue wavelength, 45 nm for a green wavelength, and more than 50 nm for a red wavelength when the applied voltage gradually increases from 0 to 8 V. Within this tunable range, the contrast ratio of the proposed double wave plate configuration is maintained above 20 with small deviation in the transmittance level. Simulation and experimental results showed the proposed double DHFLC wave plate configuration enhances the contrast ratio of the tunable filter and, thus, increases the tunable range of the filter when compared with the Lyot filter using a single DHFLC wave plate. Moreover, we have proposed a polarization insensitive configuration for which the efficiency of the existing prototype can theoretically be doubled by the use of polarization beam splitters.

RESUMO

In this article, we disclose a method to fabricate a liquid crystal (LC) Fresnel zone lens (FZL) with high efficiency. The LCFZL, based on patterned planar-aligned regions, has been prepared by means of a two-step photoalignment technique. The proposed binary-phase LCFZL manifests 39% diffraction efficiency at the focal point, which is close to the theoretical limit, 41%. Moreover, because of a lower driving voltage and faster response time, these elements could find application in many modern devices.

RESUMO

An optically tunable and rewritable liquid crystal (LC) diffraction grating cell has been revealed that consists of an optically active and an optically passive alignment layer. The grating profile is created by confining the LC director distribution in alternate planar and twisted alignment domains by means of photoalignment of the LCs. The proposed grating is optically tunable for diffractive and nondiffractive states with a small response time that depends on the exposure energy and LC parameters. In addition, the grating can be erased and rewritten for different diffracting characteristics. These optically tunable diffractive elements could find application in various photonic devices.

RESUMO

Formation of a desired liquid crystal (LC) director distribution by the use of inhomogeneous anchoring and pre-tilt angle for electrically controlled diffractive optical elements (DOE) is studied. Such LC DOE can have high periodicity and diffraction efficiency. At the same time they are free of constructive regularities, e.g. a periodic arrangement of the electrodes or thickness deviations, which have undesired impact on diffractive characteristics of LC DOE of other types. We focus on evaluation of potential functional abilities of LC DOE with inhomogeneous alignment. The reasons causing restriction of the LC DOE diffraction efficiency and periodicity are considered. Approaches for improvement of characteristics of the LC DOE are discussed.

RESUMO

We introduce a 3 x 3 matrix for the study of unitary optical systems. This 3 x 3 matrix is a submatrix of the 4 x 4 Mueller matrix. The elements of this 3 x 3 matrix are real, and thus complex-number calculations can be avoided. The 3 x 3 matrix is useful for illustrating the polarization state of an optical system. One can also use it to derive the conditions for linear and circular polarization output for a general optical system. New characterization methods for unitary optical systems are introduced. It is shown that the trajectory of the Stokes vector on a Poincaré sphere is either a circle or an ellipse as the optical system or input polarizer is rotated. One can use this characteristic circle or ellipse to measure the equivalent optical retardation and rotation of any lossless optical system.

RESUMO

A trichroic prism assembly design, believed to be new, is proposed and demonstrated. This new design has the advantages of low s- and p-polarization dependence in the reflectance spectra of the optical coatings. Hence it can be used for both color separation and color recombination with polarization change. This new trichroic prism assembly is especially useful in a compact color projector employing reflective liquid-crystal light valves.

RESUMO

In the waveguiding limit, a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell behaves as an achromatic polarization rotator. We propose and demonstrate the application of such a polarization rotator to convert unpolarized light into linearly polarized light with almost 100% efficiency. This polarization converter has a 2:1 aspect ratio, which is close to the 16:9 ratio for modern televisions. It can be used therefore in a projection display with polarization-dependent light valves such as a liquid crystal light valve. Both transmittive and reflective light valves can be used. The temperature dependence of the achromatic polarization rotator is also studied.

RESUMO

We analyze the method of phase subtraction in two identical optical structures to build an achromatic phase retarder. The two structures are made of right-angle prisms and are aligned orthogonal to each other. They are also made of materials of different refractive indices so that dispersion compensation can be taken advantage of. Essentially the phase retardation between the s and p waves in the first structure is subtracted from the phase retardation in the second structure. This can be done by reversing the roles of the s and p waves. By choosing the materials of the prisms properly, the phase retardation can be made to be constant over a broad spectral range. Indeed, calculations made with commercial optical glasses show that phase errors in the visible and near-infrared regions can be rather small. For example, for a 90° phase retarder (quarter-wave plate), a phase error of 0.35° can be obtained from 0.35 to 0.81 µm and from 0.59 to 1.26 µm.

RESUMO

With the method of self-diffraction of incoherent light, molecular vibrations were observed in real time in various dye molecules pumped near the absorption edge. In Rhodamine 560, 35-fsec oscillations in the signal were measured, which corresponds to a vibrational frequency of 1000 cm(-1). Simultaneously, this technique can be used to deduce the ultrafast dephasing times in the molecular vibrational quasi-continuum. Dephasing times of 20 and 150 fsec were observed in Rhodamine 590 and Rhodamine 560, respectively.

RESUMO

The transmission characteristics of a high-power CO(2)-laser beam through a single water aerosol particle are studied. It is found that before the onset of plasma formation there is a sizable range of laser intensity where the medium becomes almost totally transparent. A plausible argument for this induced transparency is given in terms of particle disintegration. This effect may have applications in laser atmospheric propagation.

RESUMO

The effect of an inhomogeneous electron-hole plasma in a semiconductor on the reflection properties at the infrared is theoretically investigated. For an exponential density profile, it is shown that enhanced dynamic reflectivity diminishes significantly for relatively shallow plasma depths. These results can be used to design reflection plasma switches for the production of ultrashort infrared-laser pulses.

RESUMO

By tuning the cavity length of a synchronously pumped dye laser, many stable operating points were observed, where the periodicity of the dye laser was an exact rational multiple of that of the pumping argon-ion laser. The multiplication ratio was also found to be dependent on the pumping laser power. Output with 14 times the pumping periodicity has been observed in the time domain. Twenty-six times the pumping periodicity has been observed in the frequency domain. This system can be used to study the phenomena of optical chaos at high repetition frequencies in the visible.
