RESUMO

The present study explored the effects of the pandemic on individuals with Down Syndrome (DS; n = 67) compared to other groups with Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND; n = 48) and their Typically Developing Siblings (TDS; n = 56). In total, 115 caregivers reported on their own anxiety and worries and of their children. Anxiety levels for individuals with DS appeared to be lower compared to other SEND populations and to TDS. In terms of worries, individuals with DS worried more about social-related worries but worried less about family-related aspects compared to the other groups. In sum, individuals with DS might show less anxiety but still worried more about specific aspects related to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on their lives.

RESUMO

Beavers have the ability to modify ecosystems profoundly to meet their ecological needs, with significant associated hydrological, geomorphological, ecological, and societal impacts. To bring together understanding of the role that beavers may play in the management of water resources, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems, this article reviews the state-of-the-art scientific understanding of the beaver as the quintessential ecosystem engineer. This review has a European focus but examines key research considering both Castor fiber-the Eurasian beaver and Castor canadensis-its North American counterpart. In recent decades species reintroductions across Europe, concurrent with natural expansion of refugia populations has led to the return of C. fiber to much of its European range with recent reviews estimating that the C. fiber population in Europe numbers over 1.5 million individuals. As such, there is an increasing need for understanding of the impacts of beaver in intensively populated and managed, contemporary European landscapes. This review summarizes how beaver impact: (a) ecosystem structure and geomorphology, (b) hydrology and water resources, (c) water quality, (d) freshwater ecology, and (e) humans and society. It concludes by examining future considerations that may need to be resolved as beavers further expand in the northern hemisphere with an emphasis upon the ecosystem services that they can provide and the associated management that will be necessary to maximize the benefits and minimize conflicts. This article is categorized under:Water and Life > Nature of Freshwater Ecosystems.

RESUMO

Nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat containing protein inflammasome formation plays an essential role in modulating immune system homeostasis in the gut. Recently, a caspase-11 noncanonical inflammasome has been characterized and appears to modulate many biological functions that were previously considered to be solely dependent on caspase-1 and the canonical inflammasome. To better elucidate the function of this noncanonical inflammasome during inflammatory bowel disease, experimental colitis was induced in wild-type and Casp11(-/-) mice utilizing dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Here, we report that caspase-11 attenuates acute experimental colitis pathogenesis. Casp11(-/-) mice showed significantly increased morbidity and colon inflammation following DSS exposure. Subsequent cytokine analysis revealed that IL-1ß and IL-18 levels in the colon were significantly reduced in the Casp11(-/-) mice compared with the wild-type animals. Additional mechanistic studies utilizing IL-1ß and IL-18 reconstitution revealed that Casp11(-/-) hypersensitivity was associated with the loss of both of these cytokines. Bone marrow reconstitution experiments further revealed that caspase-11 gene expression and function in both hematopoietic- and nonhematopoietic-derived cells contribute to disease attenuation. Interestingly, unlike caspase-1, caspase-11 does not appear to influence relapsing remitting disease progression or the development of colitis-associated tumorigenesis. Together, these data identify caspase-11 as a critical factor protecting the host during acute DSS-induced colonic injury and inflammation but not during chronic inflammation and tumorigenesis.

RESUMO

The objective of our study was to introduce a safe and effective method for the treatment of cervical pregnancy. This was a case series and took place at the minimal invasive surgery clinic at Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital, Bucheon, Korea. From April 2005 through October 2007, a total of 10 patients with cervical pregnancy underwent hysteroscopic surgery. An 18 F foley catheter was inserted through the cervical canal after dilation, and the uterine cavity was irrigated with 3.5% H2O2 300 mL for prevention of unrelenting bleeding. Hysteroscopic removal of cervical gestation under ultrasonographic guidance was performed uneventfully. All patients had an unremarkable postoperative course. Serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels were monitored after surgery and exhibited optimal decrease. All cases had histologic confirmation of products of conception removed from the cervix. The estimated blood loss was less than 50 mL. All patients were discharged after the first or second postoperative day. Hysteroscopic removal of cervical pregnancy with H2O2 is very useful and safe and preserves fertility.

RESUMO

Prostate cancer is a serious disease affecting men worldwide and treatment compromises the quality of life of prostate cancer patients. We conducted a study of 88 cases of prostate cancer in an attempt to identify prognostic biomarkers that can distinguish aggressive cases that must be treated immediately. HER-2/neu oncogene amplification was initially studied because amplification of this gene has been reported in many other cancers, including those studied in this laboratory. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using a HER-2/neu gene probe with a chromosome 17 centromere control probe was performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. Of a total of 86 cases successfully analyzed, only 8 (9.3%) were found to be amplified. This frequency was lower than the frequency of amplification found in other cancers studied. Furthermore, no case was found where the level of amplification can be considered high. Only one case was found to have moderate amplification. The rest of the positive cases can all be classified as low amplification. Thus, while we have demonstrated that FISH is a sensitive technique for detecting oncogene amplification, the frequency and level of HER-2/neu amplification detected in prostate cancer seem to be lower than those in most cancers that we studied. In view of the fact that HER-2/neu amplification does not seem to play as significant a role, exploration of other biomarkers in prostate cancer is warranted.

RESUMO

Korea has been conducting the National Nutrition Survey annually since 1969. Due to the magnitude and budget of the survey, its sample size was limited to 1,000. Since 1989, however, the government has increased the size to 2,000. We developed a new sampling design suitable when budget is limited and cases to be covered are relatively very small, which has been in use since 1987. The outline of the design is introduced. Basic sampling method adopted was Probability Proportional to Size (PPS) sampling. Using the Enumeration Districts (EDs) as primary sampling units (PSU), we selected 300 EDs and constructed six identical sample sets, each having 50 ED's. From each ED, we selected 20 households. Therefore, one set has 1,000 households. Currently, two sets are being used for the survey.
