RESUMO

The diversity of microbial eukaryotes was surveyed by environmental sequencing from tropical lagoon sites of the South Pacific, collected through the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH)'s Explore21 expedition to the Solomon Islands in September 2013. The sampled lagoons presented low nutrient concentrations typical of oligotrophic waters, but contained levels of chlorophyll a, a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, characteristic of meso- to eutrophic waters. Two 18S rDNA hypervariable sites, the V4 and V8-V9 regions, were amplified from the total of eight lagoon samples and sequenced on the MiSeq system. After assembly, clustering at 97% similarity, and removal of singletons and chimeras, a total of 2741 (V4) and 2606 (V8-V9) operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified. Taxonomic annotation of these reads, including phylogeny, was based on a combination of automated pipeline and manual inspection. About 18.4% (V4) and 13.8% (V8-V9) of the OTUs could not be assigned to any of the known eukaryotic groups. Of these, we focused on OTUs that were not divergent and possessed multiple sources of evidence for their existence. Phylogenetic analyses of these sequences revealed more than ten branches that might represent new deeply-branching lineages of microbial eukaryotes, currently without any cultured representatives or morphological information.

RESUMO

Torsional artificial muscles generating fast, large-angle rotation have been recently demonstrated, which exploit the helical configuration of twist-spun carbon nanotube yarns. These wax-infiltrated, electrothermally powered artificial muscles are torsionally underdamped, thereby experiencing dynamic oscillations that complicate positional control. Here, using the strategy spiders deploy to eliminate uncontrolled spinning at the end of dragline silk, we have developed ultrafast hybrid carbon nanotube yarn muscles that generated a 9,800 r.p.m. rotation without noticeable oscillation. A high-loss viscoelastic material, comprising paraffin wax and polystyrene-poly(ethylene-butylene)-polystyrene copolymer, was used as yarn guest to give an overdamped dynamic response. Using more than 10-fold decrease in mechanical stabilization time, compared with previous nanotube yarn torsional muscles, dynamic mirror positioning that is both fast and accurate is demonstrated. Scalability to provide constant volumetric torsional work capacity is demonstrated over a 10-fold change in yarn cross-sectional area, which is important for upscaled applications.

RESUMO

We report on a 41-year-old woman with a chest wall desmoid tumour who was successfully treated with a computed tomography (CT)-guided steroid injection. She presented with a palpable mass in the right upper chest wall and was treated by surgical excision and postoperative radiation therapy due to recurrence of the mass at the surgical site. At 20 months after the second operation, a recurrent mass was again detected in the anterosuperior portion of the previous surgical site on CT. We performed a CT-guided steroid injection weekly for 4 weeks by applying a mixture of 3 mL of triamcinolone acetonide (40 mg/mL) and 3 mL of 1% Lidocaine, administering 4-6 mL of the mixture, to the lesion. Six months later, CT showed a marked decrease in the size of the mass.

RESUMO

The ciliate genus Protocruzia belongs to one of the most ambiguous taxa considering its systematic position, possible as a member of the classes Heterotrichea, Spirotrichea or Karyorelictea, which is tentatively placed into Spirotrichea in Lynn's 2008 system. To test these hypotheses, multigene trees (Bayesian inference, evolutionary distance, maximum parsimony, and maximum likelihood) were constructed using the small subunit rRNA (SSU rRNA) gene, internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and a protein coding gene (histone H4). All analyses agree that: (1) four morphotypes of Protocruzia from different geographical origins group together and form a monophyletic clade, which cannot be assigned to any of the eleven described ciliate classes; (2) it is invariably positioned on an isolated branch separated from the class Spirotrichea suggesting that this clade should be clearly removed from Spirotrichea; (3) this leads us to hypothesize that this taxon may indeed represent a lineage on a class rank. Based on the fact that it is, both morphologically and in molecular features, closely related to heterotrichs, Colpodea and Oligohymenophorea, Protocruziida might be an ancestral form for the subphylum Intramacronucleata in the evolutionary line from the class Heterotrichea (subphylum Postciliodesmatophora) to higher taxa.

RESUMO

A 24-year-old man that had previously undergone a complete resection of a cervical paraganglioma presented with multiple well-defined intrapulmonary nodules on contrast-enhanced computed tomography. All of the nodules showed homogeneously intense enhancement. The largest nodule was a hot spot on F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography. It was diagnosed as a paraganglioma using wedge resection via video-assisted thoracoscopic resection. Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors and are exceedingly rare in the lung parenchyma. A few reports have described one or two intrapulmonary lesions, including primary tumors and metastases. We report a unique case of a multiple metastatic paraganglioma in the parenchyma of both lungs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Marked changes in systemic hemodynamics during liver transplantation may lead to changes in cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism. Therefore, continuous monitoring of the jugular venous oxygen saturation (SjvO2) may help the anesthetic management of liver transplantation. METHODS: We observed changes in SjvO2 using a double lumen oximetry catheter for continuous monitoring and analyzed the correlation between SjvO2 and hemodynamic measurements in thirty patients undergoing liver transplantation. RESULTS: There were no significant changes in SjvO2 compared to initial SjvO2 during liver transplantation. SjvO2, however, increased from 72.5 to 79.6 % (P < 0.05), before and after reperfusion. There was a weak correlation between changes in SjvO2 and cardiac output (r = 0.38, P < 0.05), whereas no correlation was found among changes in SjvO2 and arterial carbon dioxide tension, mean arterial pressure, central venous pressure, or mixed venous oxygen saturation before and after reperfusion. CONCLUSIONS: SjvO2 that reflects changes in cerebral oxygen demand-supply balance was well maintained during liver transplantation except the reperfusion period. Continuous monitoring of changes in SjvO2 at this period may provide further insight to understand physiology of cerebral oxygenation during liver transplantation and merits further studies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to assess the effects of rilmenidine on the autonomic nervous system, and to evaluate whether it prevents bupivacaine-induced cardiovascular toxicity during intravenous bupivacaine infusion in anesthetized cats. METHODS: Thirty male cats were randomly divided into a control group (n = 15) and a rilmenidine group (n = 15). Following the injection of rilmenidine (10microgram/kg), systolic blood pressures (SBP) and R-R intervals (RRI) were recorded for 5 minutes. Then power spectral analyses of the SBP and RRI, and transfer function analysis were conducted to evaluate the autonomic nervous system. During the infusion of bupivacaine (0.5 mg/kg/min), blood pressures, heart rates, times to reach each events, and bupivacaine doses were measured at the first QRS modification, the first dysrhythmia, at 25% (HR25) and 50% reductions in baseline heart rate, and at 25% and 50% reductions in baseline mean arterial pressure and at final systole. RESULTS: The high frequency (HF) power of heart rate variability (HRV) was significantly elevated in the rilmenidine group versus the control group. Magnitude HF was significantly higher in the rilmenidine group than in the control group. The onset of dysrhythmia correlated significantly with the HFs of HRV and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). Except for HR25, the rilmenidine group showed significantly higher bupivacaine doses and delayed event onsets versus the control group. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that pretreatment with rilmenidine delays the onset of dysrhythmia by increasing vagal tone and BRS and by reducing cardiovascular toxicity when bupivacaine is infused continuously to isoflurane anesthetized cats.

RESUMO

Although CAPD has become firmly established as an effective mode of renal replacement therapy, it's technique survival rate is much inferior compared to hemodialysis. To date, few patients have been maintained on this therapy for more than 10 years. To gain insights into clinical features of patients who had maintained over 10 years on CAPD in Korea, we retrospectively compared 23 patients who survived more than 10 years on PD(Long-term survivors, LTS) and 63 patients who died(Short-term survivors, STS-died, 41 patients) or changed to hemodialysis(STS-HD, 22 patients) within 4 years of initiating PD. For all patients, age, sex, diabetic history, prior cardiac events, body weight and biochemical profiles were analyzed. 1) The LTS were younger(39.7+/-12.4 vs. 47.7+/-12.3 vs. 60.9+/-13.8 years) compared with STS-HD and STS-died. 2) The LTS had less cases of DM(4.3% vs. 31.8 % vs, 61%), and had less cases of prior cardiac events(4.3% vs. 4.5% vs, 34.1%) compared with STS-HD and STS-died. Sex ratio and body weight were comparable in three groups. 3) At the initiation of PD, the LTS had higher serum creatinine(16.7mg/dL vs. 12.4mg/dL vs, 8.4mg/dL), albumin(3.53g/dL vs. 3.27g/dL vs, 3.20g/dL) levels compared with STS-HD and STS-died. 4) During 10 year CAPD treatment, LTS showed relatively stable body weight except the increase of body weight for the first 2 years in female. BUN, creatinine, protein, albumin constantly increased for the first 4 years, and then started to decline by 4 th to 6 th years. In conclusion, young age, non-diabetic history, less prior cardiac events and good nutritional status can predict the long-term survival on peritoneal dialysis. The evaluation of nutritional status and nutritional support by 4 th to 6 th years may be important in maintaining long-term survival in CAPD patients.

RESUMO

An attemption was made to estimate the effect of menopause on the mental health of climacteric women. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI) were questioned to 278 premenopausal women and 302 postmenopausal women. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance in each variable of menopause, age, educational level, religion and partnership of husband, and two-way analysis of variance in two variables of menopause and one of other variables. The results were summarized as follows. 1. Menopause increased the scores of validity, psychopathic deviate, hypomania and paranoia scale, but conversely decreased the score of masculinity-femininity scale. 2. The older the climacteric women were, the lower scores of masculinity-femininity scale were observed. 3. The older the premenopausal women were, the higher scores of depression, hysteria, psychopathic deviate, psychasthenia and schizophrenia scale were observed, on the contrary, all scores of the postmenopausal women were decreased by the increment of their ages. 4. The higher the educational level of climacteric women were, the higher scores of correction and masculinity-femininity scale were observed, but the scores of hypochondriasis, hysteria, schizophrenia and social introversion scale were decreased by the increment of their educational level. 5. The scores of hypomania scale were higher in women of Buddhism than other religions. 6. The scores of validity, paranoia, psychasthenia, schizophrenia and social introversion scale were higher in windows than women with husband.
