RESUMO

A study was conducted in order to examine the possible influence of feeding behaviour on differences in the diversity and the intensity of nematode infections of the gastrointestinal tract between two breeds of goats placed in the same rangeland environment. Within the same flock bred on rangeland conditions, 10 Saanen dairy goats and 14 Angora goats were surveyed for 5 months (from May to September) and parasitological and behavioural parameters were measured. The level of nematode infection was estimated by monthly measurements of faecal egg counts whereas the feeding behaviour was assessed every fortnight. During the whole survey, nematode egg excretion was repeatedly higher in the Angora goats compared to the Saanen ones and significant differences were observed in May and September. This difference in egg excretion was related to major difference in feeding behaviour between the two breeds. In contrast with the Saanen does, Angora goats did not show any browsing and resting activities at any date of observation. Hence, Angora goats can be considered mainly as grazers whereas Saanen goats exhibit feeding activities close to browsers. The relative influence of feeding behaviour and host immune response on the susceptibility to gastrointestinal nematode infection in goats is discussed.

RESUMO

Mono-2 and mono-6-O-pentenyl-beta-cyclodextrin (mono-2-pent-beta-CD and mono-6-pent-beta-CD), covalently linked to mercaptopropylsilica gel (thiol-Si) through thioether or sulfone linkage, reveal differentiated enantioselectivities in the separation of piperidine-2,6-dione-related drugs, namely aminoglutethimide and thalidomide, in supercritical fluid conditions. Supercritical fluid chromatographic resolution on completely defined mono-cyclodextrin derivative-based chiral stationary phases (CSP) is a method of choice for the separation of aminoglutethimide but not effective for thalidomide. For both high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) conditions, the impact of the position, imposed to be 2 or 6 in our synthetic pathway, of the pentenyl moiety on one of the glucopyranosidics of the CD cage is of crucial importance in the chiral discrimination phenomenon. Additionally, the nature of the heteroatom present in the spacer arm between the CD and the silica gel, in this case thioether or sulfone functionality, is also essential for the chiral recognition mechanism(s) for the solute enantiomer.

RESUMO

To further elucidate the molecular basis for hereditary thrombophilia, we screened the protein S active gene in 11 families with type I deficiency, using a strategy based on denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of all the coding sequences. Fragments with an abnormal DGGE pattern were sequenced, and 5 novel mutations were identified in 8 families. The mutations were a 7-nucleotide deletion in exon II, a 4-nucleotide deletion in exon III, a T insertion in exon VII, a C to T transition transforming Leu 259 into Pro and a T to C transition transforming Cys 625 into Arg in 4 families. These mutations were the only sequence variations found in the propositus' gene exons and co-segregated with the plasma phenotype. A total of 28 members of these 8 families were heterozygous for one of the 5 mutations. Twenty-four (58,5%) of the 41 deficient subjects over 18 years of age had clinical thrombophilia, whereas the 13 subjects under 18 were asymptomatic. Of the 28 subjects, 6 (21,5%) were also found to bear the factor V Arg 506 Gln mutation.

RESUMO

The empty-sella syndrome consists of the abnormal extension into the sella turcica of an arachnoid diverticulum filled with CSF, which displaces and compresses the pituitary gland. Such a diverticulum can erode through the sellar floor and lead to CSF rhinorrhea through the sphenoidal sinus. Empty-sella syndrome should be considered a diagnostic possibility in patients with nontraumatic CSF rhinorrhea. Diagnosis and treatment are best accomplished with a team approach involving the otolaryngologist, neurosurgeon, neuroradiologist, and neuroendocrinologist. Definitive diagnosis requires pneumoencephalography and thin-section polytomography. Attention should be directed to the possibility of a coexisting pituitary adenoma. Treatment can be accomplished by a transseptal, transsphenoidal approach with localization and repair of the leak.

RESUMO

The occurrence of vascular perturbations in the tympanogram in association with glomus tumors has previously been noted in the literature. We have broadened the scope of this method of diagnosis in the study of 3 glomus tympanicum and 3 glomus jugulare tumors, 1 dehiscent high jugular bulb, 1 aberrant carotid artery in the middle ear and 2 cases of pulsatile tinnitus of vascular origin. Analysis of illustrative tympanograms at standard and at increased sensitivity (x 20) obtained in these cases are presented. The following factors as they relate to the mechanism of recording the vascular perturbations are presented: air pressure and/or presence of fluid in the middle ear; compliance of the tympanic membrane and ossicular chain as affected by the mass, size and degree of vascularity of the mass and presence of extraneous sounds. A new method of recording the vascular perturbations utilizing a time-base generator affixed to an X-Y plotter is described. It is the purpose of this study to demonstrate the utility of obtaining tympanograms at standard and at increased sensitivity in the evaluation of vascular middle ear lesions and tinnitus of vascular origin.

RESUMO

The transoral transpharyngeal approach to the upper cervical spine is useful in symptomatic cases of chronic atlantoaxial dislocation not reducible by other means. Spontaneous healing and fusion in such patients results in an anterior deformity or gibbus which indents the ventral surface of the spinal cord. This lesion is best approached anteriorly, with the neck in a neutral or extended position. Previously reported complications of the transoral operation, especially vertebral artery laceration, can be avoided through used of the microscope. The technique is described and 2 cases are presented. Spinal stability was not disrupted in either, and cord decompression was accomplished.

RESUMO

Dermoid cysts of the floor of the mouth and submandibular area represent an unusual clinical entity. We present three such cases and review their clinical presentation and pathologic classification. This study stresses the importance of recognizing and excising any tract leading from such cysts to the midline mandible or hyoid, in order to avoid a recurrence, since these tracts may be epithelialized.
