During this study, a groundwater screening tool was developed to assess the temporal risk of groundwater contamination from the use of pesticides. It is based on a source, vector, target approach. The method utilised in this study uses a semi-quantitative probabilistic risk assessment where the input parameters were classified and assigned a relative score from 1 to 5 (i.e. 1 = no risk and 5 = high risk). The model was parameterised by using national data and calibrated with 2 years of national pesticide groundwater monitoring data. After calibration, two specific sites were selected for model validation. Based on the presence of the source, vector and target, the evaluation indicated that the temporal risk is site specific (i.e. May to December for the country model, June to September for the Oak Park site and September for the Castledockrell site). A sensitivity analysis performed on the national scale revealed that the groundwater vulnerability category (gv), the clay content (cc%), the persistence of pesticides in soil (DT50) and the rainfall represented by wet day (wd) were the most important parameters that affected model predictions (correlation coefficients of 0.54, -0.39, 0.35 and 0.31, respectively), highlighting the importance of soil hydrogeological conditions, soil type and rainfall in influencing water model predictions. The model developed can help to identify the temporal risk from pesticides to groundwater and guide regulators in highlighting at-risk periods, therefore allowing more focused monitoring programmes.

The EU FOCUS scenarios are a set of nine standard scenarios based on a combination of crop, soil and weather data used throughout Europe to evaluate the leaching potential of pesticides to groundwater. In Ireland, two predefined EU FOCUS scenarios (Okehampton and Hamburg) appear to be the most appropriate to Irish conditions. However, there is concern that these scenarios may not accurately represent Irish specific conditions, especially in terms of soil and climatic weather. Therefore, the objective of this study was to parameterise a number of site specific locations in Ireland (represented by Oakpark, Clonroche, Rathangan and Elton series soils) and to compare simulated leachate levels at these locations to EU FOCUS scenarios using the PELMO (Pesticide Leaching Model) simulation model. The hydrological processes were validated using observed data for soil tension and leachate. The appropriate EU FOCUS scenarios were then simulated for the given locations and compared to the parameterised scenario. All scenarios were run using the same version of PELMO, therefore eliminating any software impacts. The models were run for 26 years using appropriate meteorological data. The results showed significant difference between the parameterised model pesticide leaching and that resulting from the EU FOCUS scenarios, the latter overestimating site pesticide leaching from 42 to 99%. The results indicated a significant conservatism in using EU FOCUS scenarios to determine potential pesticide concentration in the leachate under Irish specific conditions and ensure the desired level of protection against pesticide contamination of national water resources.

A quantitative microbial risk assessment was applied to evaluate the microbial risks of the Accra Urban Water System (AUWS). The exposure assessment was based on the count of indicator organisms in waste water from open roadside drains and in water and sand samples from the beach. The predicted total disease burden generated in a representative catchment of the AUWS (Odaw Catchment) was 36,329 Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) per year, of which 12 and 88% are caused by, respectively, shortcomings in the water supply system and inappropriate sanitation. The DALYs per person per year were above the WHO reference value. The open roadside drain had the highest contribution to the disease burden. Of four possible interventions evaluated for health risk reduction, the highest efficiency in terms of DALYs averted per euro invested would be achieved by providing covers for the open roadside drains.
