RESUMO

The wide adaptation range of the circulatory system, the respiratory system, and the metabolism of the female organism during pregnancy permits utilization of many positive effects of physical exercise for optimal health and wellbeing. Hitherto physically inactive pregnant women should be intensively motivated and advised, while women who are already physically active regularly should be advised to combine planned pregnancies with an optimally step-by-step reduction in training. After an uncomplicated delivery, and dependent on a normal uterus involution and lactation, a gradual adaptation to a renewed training program can be recommended. The advantages of physical exercise during pregnancy were analysed in relation to possibly dangerous complications during intensive training periods. The most important contraindications are described. The authors emphasize the increasing importance of cooperation between the Pregnancy Health Service and the Sports Medicine Service for optimal medical guidance of physically active pregnant women.

RESUMO

The solitary gastric erosion of Dieulafoy is rarely recognized but is not an uncommon cause of massive upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The English literature has only recently described this lesson in vivo. Its etiology and pathogenesis has remained poorly defined since first described in 1896. We have recently studied a series of nine cases (the largest English literature series), five of which were recognized and diagnosed at operation. Multiple tissue staining techniques were used to study the biopsy specimens for "clues" as to the pathogenesis of this lesion to be a vascular dysplasia that is associated with chronic gastritis and that thrombosis and necrosis of the abnormally tortuous submucosal artery occurs before perforation and exigent bleeding. The total lack of inflammatory reaction at the base of the lesion precludes a diagnosis of "ulceratio simplex" as originally described.

RESUMO

More than 400 cows were involved in three experimental series in which quarterwise measurement was applied continuously, even daly in a number of instances, to initial milking samples, with the view to establishing the electric conductivity of the milk. Electric cell count determination, high-speed mastitis tests, clinical examination of udders and secretions, and bacteriological milk tests were complementarily conducted. The major purpose of the effort was to find out whether milk conductivity measurement would be helpful in detecting subclinical mastitis. Conductivity measurement, in addition to being in fair agreement with milk cell count data, proved to be suitable an approach to high-continuity monitoring of udder condition, with no disruption of the production process being required. Specification of limit values and diagnostic value of differences between quarter milking data from one and the same udder were additional subjects of this study.
