There are no instruments for validation or evaluation of a member's satisfaction of and benefits with psych-social clubs. This article reports on the development and testing of the mixed-method instrument entitled Benefits and Satisfaction Tool for Members of a Psych-social Club (B&ST-MPC), which evolved from findings of a qualitative research study. The alpha reliability coefficient was .92. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin Test yielded a value of .812. The items loaded on 3 factors. Utilization of B&ST-MPC supports development of services for rural communities through feedback from consumers. Further testing of the B&ST-MPC in settings with diverse populations is recommended.

The purpose of this study was to examine the interrelationship of health, illness, and spirituality for Punjabi Sikh living in Canada. A grounded theory study with a convenience sample and use of snowballing technique provided a sample of 15 participants ranging in age from 20 to 70 years. Constant comparative method with dimensional analysis was used to analyze the data beginning with the first interview. The themes of being healthy and looking for the spiritual are described. Looking for the spiritual results in the person becoming spiritually strong and therefore being healthier, recovering from illness, or having the ability to feel comfortable when near death. Nurses who understand the interplay of spirituality and health can support Punjabi Sikh in their food requirements, prayers, and feelings of hope and anguish during illness or life transitions.

The purpose of this study was to examine the concept of health for the Sto:lo Coast Salish of the Pacific Northwest and describe their ways of being healthy within their specific context, considering the climate, the resources of their natural environment, and their spiritual heritage. This study, using a grounded theory approach, focused on the meaning of health for the Sto:lo. A sample of 18 participants and two cultural experts, using the constant comparison method and dimensional analysis, yielded three themes. Health as "balance," spirituality as "it's an ongoing thing," and transitions as "those times of change" were the resulting themes. Nurses, who take the themes into account when providing care, will be more culturally competent.

Every day nurses make practice decisions that are based on knowledge drawn from personal, cultural, and scientific sources. Nurses therefore practice from a particular perspective that involves culturally based personal, professional, and societal beliefs and values. Their practice, however, may involve clients whose beliefs and values are culturally different from their own and that of mainstream society. To deal effectively with competing demands in a multicultural society, nurses need to be aware of transcultural nursing concepts and how they influence ethical decision making. Using a problem-solving approach, this article analyzes the practice decisions made by a school nurse when working with a Vietnamese adolescent girl and her family. A case study is presented with background information about the Vietnamese culture, the refugee-immigrant experience, and nursing ethics. Suggestions are offered for future ethical problem solving.

The recruitment and retention of students from culturally diverse backgrounds remains a critical issue in nursing education. This article describes one program that was very successful in helping Native Canadian and other disenfranchised students succeed academically in nursing. The program design and operation as well as issues related to recruitment and retention of these students are presented. Many aspects of this program are now incorporated into the baccalaureate nursing program in the college.
