The results of a medical investigation of 973 volunteers (632 bank employees and 341 workers in a food factory) are compared: a marked difference exists between the two groups with regard to body-weight distribution. Significantly more persons with elevated levels of serum cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose are registered in the group of food workers; moreover, the incidence of hypertension, bad teeth and varicosis is also higher in this group.

The early diagnosis of lead poisoning -- the most common type of occupational metal poisoning -- based on the determination of the haemprecursors coproporphyrin, delta amino laevulinic acid and free erythrocyte protoporphyrin. Treatment with chelating agents increases urinary lead excretion very effectively. Clinical manifestations of mercury poisoning are different with organic and inorganic mercury compounds. Cadmium poisoning results in inhibition of non-specific enzymes. Depending on the mode of exposure, alteration of the epithelium of the renal tubules or skeletal damage is seen. The toxic effects of chromium are primarily due to direct contact and absorption. Chromium is also carcinogenic. The importance of technical prophylaxis is stressed.

[Early operation in toxic megacolon complicating ulcerative colitis]. / Zur Frühoperation beim toxischen Megakolon infolge Colitis ulcerosa

A case report of toxic megacolon complicating ulcerative colitis serves as basis for a discussion of the diagnosis, therapeutic management and assessment of the indications for surgical interference in this condition. In this particular case, colectomy with retention of the rectal stump proved a life-saving measure. The rectal stump had to be removed three months subsequently in view of the persistence of the mucosal pathology.
