RESUMO

Redox conditions and organic matter control marine methylmercury (MeHg) production. The Black Sea is the world's largest and deepest anoxic basin and is thus ideal to study Hg species along the extended redox gradient. Here we present new dissolved Hg and MeHg data from the 2013 GEOTRACES MEDBlack cruise (GN04_leg2) that we integrated into a numerical 1-D model, to track the fate and dynamics of Hg and MeHg. Contrary to a previous study, our new data show highest MeHg concentrations in the permanently anoxic waters. Observed MeHg/Hg percentage (range 9-57%) in the anoxic waters is comparable to other subsurface maxima in oxic open-ocean waters. With the modeling we tested for various Hg methylation and demethylation scenarios along the redox gradient. The results show that Hg methylation must occur in the anoxic waters. The model was then used to simulate the time evolution (1850-2050) of Hg species in the Black Sea. Our findings quantify (1) inputs and outputs of HgT (~31 and ~28 kmol yr-1) and MeHgT (~5 and ~4 kmol yr-1) to the basin, (2) the extent of net demethylation occurring in oxic (~1 kmol yr-1) and suboxic water (~6 kmol yr-1), (3) and the net Hg methylation in the anoxic waters of the Black Sea (~11 kmol yr-1). The model was also used to estimate the amount of anthropogenic Hg (85-93%) in the Black Sea.

During the last few years, several co-culture systems using either BOEC or VERO feeder cells have been developed to improve bovine embryo development and these systems give better results at high oxygen concentration (20%). In parallel, the SOF medium, used at 5% O2, has been developed to mimic the oviduct fluid. Since 2010s, the SOF medium has become popular in improving bovine embryo development and authors have started to associate this medium to co-culture systems. Nevertheless, little is known about the putative benefit of this association on early development. To address this question, we have compared embryo transcriptomes in four different culture conditions: SOF with BOEC or VERO at 20% O2, and SOF without feeders at 5% or 20% O2 Embryos have been analyzed at 16-cell and blastocyst stages. Co-culture systems did not improve the developmental rate when compared to 5% O2 Direct comparison of the two co-culture systems failed to highlight major differences in embryo transcriptome at both developmental stages. Both feeder cell types appear to regulate the same cytokines and growth factors pathways, and thus to influence embryo physiology in the same way. In blastocysts, when compared to culture in SOF at 5% O2, BOEC or VERO seems to reduce cell survival and differentiation by, at least, negatively regulating STAT3 and STAT5 pathways. Collectively, in SOF medium both blastocysts rate and embryo transcriptome suggest no influence of feeder origin on bovine early development and no beneficial impact of co-culture systems when compared to 5% O2.

A biomimetic composite of nanohydroxyapatite (nHap) and semicrystalline polyamide 6,9 (PA 6,9) was synthesized by thermally induced phase separation. The nHap powder was dispersed in a polymer matrix with a low ratio ranging 1-10 wt %. The mean size of the nHap, determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was approximately 100-200 nm (length), 40-60 nm (width). Physicochemical analyses were performed in order to characterize the PA 6,9 and nHap separately on the one hand, and the PA 6,9/nHap composites on the other hand. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA) have pointed out an optimization of the composite physical properties as a function of nHap content till a limit value of 5 wt %. Above this value, the mechanical properties decreased. Four main parameters have been found to influence the composite physical properties improvement: the fillers content, the physical structure of the polymeric matrix, the particles dispersion and the physical interaction strength between organic and inorganic phases. The dynamic mechanical properties of this biomimetic nanocomposite were compared with human cortical bone.

Pure Na0.44MnO2 samples were prepared via a solid-state route by carefully tuning the synthesis conditions. Insertion/deinsertion of sodium into the well-crystallized particles leads to capacities as high as 140 mA.h/g. A potentiostatic intermittent titration technic, together with in situ X-ray diffraction measurements, enabled us to evidence the presence of six biphasic transitions within a potential range of 2-3.8 V (vs Na+/Na). The insertion process within the NaxMnO2 system is fully reversible over the 0.25 < x < 0.65 composition range and presents some degree of irreversibility as values of x below 0.25 are reached. Furthermore, we similarly showed that HCl treatment has a detrimental effect on these electrochemical properties because of structural and textural evolutions.

RESUMO

Although widely used, the most promising Li-based technologies still need to seek new materials concepts to satisfy the increasing demands for energy storage worldwide. We report a layered electrode material, Cu(2.33)V4O11, for which the valency of copper, vanadium and thus indirectly the oxygen stoichiometry need to be investigated during the electrochemical cycle. High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) allows us to perform these measurements at the nanometer scale.
