RESUMO

Studies on the relationships and interactions within human-dog teams in the French Army are scarce. In order to better understand this subject, a qualitative exploratory study was undertaken by conducting semi-structured interviews with dog handlers (n = 16). The interviewees work in the French Army. They are specialized in the detection and neutralization of individuals or explosives. Thematic analysis identified different themes: trust within the team, doubts, interspecific cohesion, and care provided to the dogs. The results highlight the importance of trust within the canine team. It is conceived as a dynamic, constructed process, based on experience, and involving both members of the team. It emerges that trust arises from individual, relational, technical, and experiential factors: the bonds formed, knowledge of one's dog, difficulties related to technical aspects, the reliability of the dog following training, and mission successes. Kindness, support, and mutual protection are also important criteria. A form of interspecific cohesion is envisaged by experienced handlers when affection, knowledge, reliability, mutual assistance, and support are present.

RESUMO

Ehpad are French establishments intended to elderly people in a situation of physical and/or psychological loss of autonomy. Institutionalization in Ehpad is often synonymous with the disruption of social ties. In this context, different group activities are likely to favour the residents' relationships. Among these activities, animal mediation is an emerging approach that is gradually being introduced in these establishments. The aim of this research is to study the benefits of animal mediation on the social bond of Ehpad residents, according to animal mediation practitioners and professionals working in these establishments. Semi-directive interviews were carried out with nine professionals working in Ehpad in daily contact with the residents and who had attended collective sessions. These professionals were invited to give their views on the interactions between residents and on the benefits of the sessions. At the same time, fifty animal mediation practitioners responded to a questionnaire aimed at determining the place given to the development of social links in their practices. The professionals working in Ehpad described animal mediation as a practice that facilitates interactions during the sessions but also outside. For residents for whom verbalization is difficult or even impossible, animal mediation is presented as facilitating non-verbal communication. These comments converge with the discourse of animal mediation practitioners who place the creation of social links and the development of social skills at the heart of their practices. They highlight the central role of the animal which facilitates interactions and provides an emotional exchange.

RESUMO

The clinical trial ANRS-IPERGAY investigated the efficacy of sexual activity-based (i.e. on demand) HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Using a qualitative method, we analysed the role of adherence as one of the main elements for PrEP effectiveness and its associated determinants. Data were collected in various French ANRS-IPERGAY sites during the double-blind (2012-2014) and open-label study (2015-2016) phases, through two individual interviews per participant, collective interviews and focus groups. A total of 83 participants participated in the present study. Our analysis included 32 individual interviews (with 16 participants), 13 collective interviews (n = 45) and 8 focus groups (n = 33). We investigated adherence to on-demand pill-intake schedule, focusing especially on PrEP integration into daily life. PrEP intake was regulated through coping strategies to simplify implementation and avoid stigmatizing reactions. We considered self-care and pharmaceuticalization of prevention as specific features of sexual activity-based PrEP. As PrEP is a prophylaxis for seronegative people, it is contributing to the emergence of a new identity in the HIV field. Health-care professionals should take into account the practical implementation of PrEP schedules into daily life, assist PrEP users in personal management of pill intake and, more generally, improve adherence to the prophylaxis.

RESUMO

The impact of rectal cancer on patient quality of life has been investigated but no research has yet examined the impact of time perspective in the assessment of quality of life of rectal cancer patients. Our goal is to explore the links between quality of life and time perspective and the role of time perspective as a determinant of quality of life. Data were collected from 69 patients who completed a questionnaire comprising a specific measure of quality of life (FACT-C), a measure of time perspective (ZTPI), a measure of emotional distress (HADS) and a collection of socio-demographic and medical data. Regression analyses revealed that present fatalist, past positive and future time perspective predicted quality of life. Present fatalist time perspective seemed to have a deleterious impact on specific measure of rectal cancer quality of life. Present fatalist and future time perspective predicted a better emotional quality of life whereas past positive predicted a worse emotional quality of life. These results suggest the importance of considering time perspective as a determinant of psychological quality of life in order to improve the QoL of patients.

RESUMO

People living with HIV who spontaneously control the virus without antiretroviral treatment are called HIV Controllers and their status places them at the limits of bio-clinical normality. The objective of this study was to investigate an unexplored field: HIV Controllers' quality of life (QOL). Using quantitative methods, we compared the QOL of untreated (by definition) HIV Controllers in the ANRS CO18 HIV Controller cohort study, with the QOL of treated patients in the French national survey ANRS VESPA 2. In particular, the physical, social, mental and sexual dimensions of QOL were examined. Results highlight that perceiving oneself to be ill or healthy is linked to stigma and to a lack of self-identification with a social group. Some components of the QOL were significantly impaired in HIV controllers. This study is the first to investigate this field.

RESUMO

This study's objective was to explore the factors associated with the belief (or not) by people living with HIV that it is easier to talk about their seropositivity 10 years after initiating a protease inhibitor-containing ART. All patients in the ANRS CO8 APROCO-COPILOTE cohort who completed a self-administered questionnaire at 10 years of follow-up were included in this study. Forty-four percent of patients declared that discussing their seropositivity with their family was easier 10 years later, while 28 % declared this was true for discussing their status with a new sexual partner. Having a low socioeconomic status, not receiving social support from a steady partner and declaring a low number of discomforting symptoms 12 months after PI initiation were all independently associated with less difficulty in discussing seropositivity. This study highlights the difficulties in disclosing HIV 10 years after PI initiation, and the important influence of psychosocial factors and patients' daily-life experience on disclosure.

RESUMO

Two challenges were identified to improve the place of PEP in combined prevention: (1) improvement of healthcare professionals’ knowledge, practices and attitudes; and (2) revision of the guidelines concerning first-line prescription, the conditions for access to PEP, and sexual health support..

RESUMO

Some people living with HIV spontaneously control the virus without antiretroviral treatment. They are called HIV controllers, and their status places them at the limits of bio-clinical normality. The objective of this study was to investigate HIV controllers' beliefs and representations of their individual trajectories using a qualitative approach. Fourteen HIV controllers were interviewed. Vertical analysis focused on examining how interviewees' specific beliefs and representational processes help these patients adapt to their particular situation. Horizontal analysis focused on how patients' biographic trajectories and identity positioning help them make sense of their situation. Results highlighted that perceiving oneself to be healthy or ill was linked to change or a lack of change in terms of disease perception, beliefs, and representations, when seropositivity was announced. This study of social representations and the processes involved provide crucial elements for health professionals caring for HIV controllers.

RESUMO

Time perspective (TP) is a fundamental dimension of the psychological construction of time. It refers to a subjective experience and can be defined as the relationship that individuals and groups have with the present, past, and future. Studies have shown that it is interesting to take into account TP in the field of health, especially for the study of the psychological distress (PD) of individuals faced with aversive situations. We conducted a research, which aimed to explore the relationship between TP and PD in patients with chronic pain. A total of 264 first-time patients (72.3% women; mean age = 49 years) at CHU Timone (Marseille) pain center answered a questionnaire included TP, socioeconomic status, pain beliefs (PB), pain characteristics, and sociodemographic characteristics. Using hierarchical regression analyses adjusted to the characteristics of pain, sociodemographic characteristics, and PB, we can observe significant relationships between different components of TP, socioeconomic status, and PD. These results emphasize the importance of TP as psychosocial variable in the analysis of PD in patients with chronic pain. These results also lead us to point out the role of the socioeconomic status that predicts levels of PD.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Numerous studies have shown the impact of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) on patient quality of life (QoL), but no research has yet examined the impact of time's experience in the assessment of QoL in IBD. Our goal is to explore the links between QoL and time perspective (TP) and the role of TP as a determinant of QoL. METHODS: Data were collected from 156 patients who completed a questionnaire comprising a generic measure (SF-12) and a specific measure (Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire) of QoL, a measure of TP (ZTPI) and a collection of socio-demographic and medical data. RESULTS: Correlational analyses illustrated the links between TP and QoL. Regression analyses revealed that records of Past-negative and Present-hedonistic perspectives predicted QoL. Past-negative time perspective seemed to have a deleterious impact, while a Present-hedonistic time perspective predicted a better QoL, and this was irrespective of the level of severity of the disease. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest the importance of considering TP as a determinant of psychological QoL. They corroborate earlier findings on the relationship between TP and QoL associated with other pathologies. The past-negative register, which indicates rumination, tells us about the importance of considering the psychological experience of time in order to improve the QoL of patients.
