In the current study, ecological risk of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in sediments, seawater, wastewater, soft tissues and shell of a major fouling species Callista florida (C. florida) and soft tissue of rocky oyster, Saccostrea cucullata (S. cucullata) are investigated. For this purpose, 25 sediment samples, 24 seawater samples, 28 wastewater samples, and 100 bivalve samples were collected for PTEs analysis. Risk index (RI) and sediment quality guidelines along with calculated enrichment factors (EF) and PTEs profiles revealed that Musa Estuary is threatened by contamination, especially with respect to Hg, Cu, and Zn. The decreasing trend of average element enrichment factor is: Hg > Cu > Ni > Cd > Zn > Co > Cr > Mn > Fe > As > Pb > Mo > Sb. Among the investigated elements, Hg indicated the highest potential ecological risk factor in sediment (RI and EF are 1341.6 and 214.66 close to the industrial area). The Ficklin chart results demonstrated that seawater samples almost plot in regions with high metal load and pH values were the same. Mean concentrations of PTEs in water samples were 1.2 (for Cu) to 6565 (for Hg) times higher than world seawater. Regarding wastewater, pH values changed from very acidic to alkaline while PTEs load ranged from low to high load. In general, PTEs concentration in water samples was higher compared to those of the world seawater. Based on the results obtained in this biomonitoring study, elevated concentrations of Al, Fe, Cu, and Zn were found in soft tissue of C. florida and S. cucullata. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in PTEs concentration between the two studied species. Generally, most PTEs concentration including Al, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Sb in soft tissue fall between water and sediment samples i.e., sediment > biota > water.

Five heavy metals/metalloids and related potential health risks were investigated in three commercially important fish species (Anodontostoma chacunda, Belangerii, and Cynoglossurs arel) in Musa Estuary and Mahshahr Harbour of the Persian Gulf. A total of 116 fish samples were collected, and their liver and muscle organs were separately analyzed using ICP-MS. Results revealed that studied metals concentrations (with some exceptions) varied among sampling stations, fish species and their organs. Human health risk is evaluated using different indices. The results indicated that arsenic and mercury are the most hazardous elements. Estimated daily intake (EDI) for the metals exceeded the provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI) for all studied fish species. Also, target risk (TR) of arsenic indicated that consumption over a long period of time may result in a carcinogenic effect. The results are expected to create awareness among the public on the safety of consuming food products grown in particular areas.

This study investigates trace elements and PAHs content in road dust of Isfahan metropolis, central Iran. The mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn are 22.15, 2.14, 182.26, 66.63, 393.33, 6.95 and 707.19 mg kg(-1), respectively. When compared with upper continental crust, the samples generally display elevated trace element concentrations, except for Co and Cr. The decreasing trend of calculated enrichment factors (EFs) is Cd>Pb>Sb>Zn>Cu>As>Ni>Cr>Co. Calculated potential ecological risk reveals that among the analyzed metals, Cd and Pb, have a higher potential ecological risk. Statistically, two identified main sources of trace elements include road traffic emissions and resuspension of soil particles. As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb and Zn in Isfahan road dust are strongly influenced by anthropogenic activity, mainly traffic emissions, while Co, Cr and Ni originate from resuspension of soil natural parent particles. The sum of 13 major PAHs (∑13PAHs) mass concentration ranges from 184.64 to 3221.72 µg kg(-1) with the mean being 1074.58 µg kg(-1). PAHs sources are identified using PCA analysis. It is demonstrated that the PAHs in Isfahan road dust are mainly derived from traffic emission, coal combustion and petroleum. Toxic equivalent concentrations (TEQs) of PAHs in the road dust ranges between 25.021 µg kg(-1) and 230.893 µg kg(-1). High correlation coefficients (r(2)=0.909 and 0.822, p<0.01) between Benzo[a]pyrene, Benzo[b+k]fluoranthene and toxicity equivalent concentrations of road dust indicate that Benzo[a]pyrene and Benzo[b+k]fluoranthenes are major TEQ contributors. The total incremental life time cancer risk (ILCR) of exposure to PAHs from Isfahan metropolis urban dust is 4.85 × 10(-4) for adult and 5.02 × 10(-4) for children. Estimated results of ILCR indicate that Isfahan residents are potentially exposed to high cancer risk via both dust ingestion and dermal contact.
