RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining quality of life (QoL) has been identified as the primary goal of care services for person living with dementia (PLWD). METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted on five rounds of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) over 4 years. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used to examine the prediction of relationship type on older adults' QoL through four domains: mental health, general health, functional limitations, and pain. RESULTS: older adults cared for by an adult-child or multiple caregivers predicted increased risk for functional limitations after adjustment for their socio-demographic and dementia status (IRR = 1.53, CI [1.26, 1.86]; IRR = 1.36, CI [1.14, 1.61], respectively). The interaction between the relationship type and education was significant. Older adults with a high school education or below, who were cared for by an adult child, had a significantly higher risk of increasing functional limitations over 4 years compared to those cared for by a spouse/partner (contrast = .50, P = .01, 95% CI [.07, .93]; contrast=.52, P = .03, 95% CI [.03, 1.02]; respectively). Similarly, older adults with a high school education, who were cared for by multiple caregivers, also experienced a significantly higher risk of increasing functional limitations than those cared for by a spouse/partner (contrast = .44, P = .03, 95% CI [.02, .85]). CONCLUSION: Our findings provide evidence of the significant contribution of relationship type on PLWD's QoL changes over time. They also help to prioritize resource allocation while addressing PLWD's demands by socio-demographics such as education level.

RESUMO

Individuals with pre-clinical mobility limitation (PCML) are at a high risk of future functional loss and progression to disability. The purpose of this scoping review was to provide a comprehensive understanding of PCML intervention studies in middle-aged and older adults. We present the interventions that have been tested or planned, describe how they have been conducted and reported, identify the knowledge gaps in current literature, and make recommendations about future research directions. An initial search of 2,291 articles resulted in 14 articles that met criteria for inclusion. Findings reveal that: (1) there is limited published work on PCML interventions, especially in middle-aged populations; and (2) the complexity and variety of PCML measures make it difficult to compare findings across PCML studies. Despite the diversity of measures, this review provides preliminary evidence that rehabilitation interventions on PCML help to delay or prevent disability progression.

RESUMO

Zizania latifolia (Z. latifolia) is a popular aquatic vegetable with various nutrients in south China, but little is known about its cultivars and growing seasons in terms of the nutritional components. This work aims to characterize the nutrients of five Z. latifolia cultivars in different growing seasons. The results showed that Z. latifolia samples differed in terms of chemical parameters, which were significantly affected by variety, growing season, and their interaction. Zhejiao No. 8, harvested in the autumn, stood out with the highest levels of vitamin C. Tangxiajiao and Zhejiao No. 1 contained the highest values of total soluble solids, reducing sugar, soluble proteins, and amino acids. Significant differences were observed between the autumn Z. latifolia and spring samples; the former were of higher quality than the latter based on hierarchical clustering analysis and principal component analysis. Moreover, total amino acids (TAA) and glutamic acid (GLU) were selected as the key indicators for Z. latifolia comprehensive quality by multiple linear regression analysis. This study provides essential information on Z. latifolia quality characteristics corresponding to cultivars and growing seasons, which lays the foundation for promoting the quality improvement of Z. latifolia scientifically.

RESUMO

As an ingredient in various foods, Chrysanthemum morifolium flower is popular due to its multiple health benefits. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are hepatotoxic secondary metabolites in Chrysanthemum family. Effects of high-pressure extraction (HPE) on PAs removal efficiency, as well as the retention efficiency of functional components, including chlorogenic acid, luteolin-7-ß-D-glucopyranoside, 3,5-dicaffeyl quinic acid and total flavonoids, were investigated and optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Pressure (0.1-200 MPa), numbers of cycles (1-5) and acetic acid concentration (0-10%) were chosen as the independent variables. The results indicated that the pressure was the most significant factors affecting all responses. The optimum HPE for removing Pas and retaining functional components were set at 124 MPa, with one cycle and with an acetic acid concentration of 10%. After comparing the experimental optimum values and predicted optimum values, the validity of RSM model was proved.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess whether there was an association between care-recipient relationship type and health-related quality of life (HRQL) of older persons living with dementia (PLWD) and their informal caregivers, and whether this association was affected by PLWD' dementia severity. METHODS: This was a secondary data analysis study. PLWD (n = 1230) and caregivers (n = 1871) were identified from participants in the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) Round 5 and the National Study of Caregiving (NSOC) II, respectively. A series of bivariate and multivariable regression models examined the associations among relationship type and HRQL in PLWD and caregivers, adjusted for socio-demographic variables and dementia severity. RESULTS: PLWD and caregivers' HRQL outcomes varied by relationship type. PLWD cared for by an adult-child caregiver, or multiple caregivers experienced higher functional limitations than those cared for by a spousal caregiver (ß = .79, CI [.39, 1.19]; ß = .50, CI [.17, .82], respectively). "Other" caregivers, such as extended family members or friends, had lower odds of experiencing negative emotional burden and social strain than spousal caregivers (ß = .79, CI [.39, 1.19]; ß = .50, CI [.17, .82], respectively). Lower odds of experiencing negative emotional burden were also found with multiple caregivers. The effect of an adult-child caregiver on social strain was no longer significant when the dementia severity of PLWD was included in the analysis. CONCLUSION: The type of care-recipient relationship impacts the HRQL in both PLWD and their informal caregivers. Dementia severity of the PLWD appears to affect this association.

RESUMO

The tolerance of plants to Cd is a scientific and interesting issue for phytoremediation. In the current study, we attempt to reveal the physiological mechanism of the tolerance of Eichhornia crassipes to cadmium (Cd) by using hydroponic experiments. The results showed that the Cd absorption of E. crassipes was dose-dependent and the absorbed Cd was mainly maintained in the root. The fresh weight was greatly affected by Cd in the early stage of aquatic cultivation. The negative effect of Cd on E. crassipes is dose-dependent, but E. crassipes might adapt to moderate Cd pollution over time. The Cd stimulated the opening of the stomata, and the cell tightness ratio of E. crassipes increased with rising Cd concentrations. The administration of moderate levels of Cd stimulated the release of soluble protein, free proline, malondialdehyde, and soluble polysaccharide. Cd administration also stimulated the activity of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase (POD), catalase, and ascorbic acid peroxidase of E. crassipes, except for POD activity at the highest Cd concentration. This indicates that the physiological mechanism of the tolerance of E. crassipes to Cd depends on osmotic regulation, reduction of lipid peroxidation, improvement of antioxidant properties, increasing palisade tissue while decreasing sponge tissue, and increasing stomatal conductance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fungicides are often applied to pears before they are kept in storage facilities. The scientific application of pesticides can reduce unnecessary exposure, which in turn could benefit both humans and the environment. RESULTS: We investigated dissipation behavior and residue distribution, and conducted risk assessments for prochloraz, pyraclostrobin, and tebuconazole in pears stored under different conditions using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). The recoveries of the three fungicides ranged from 76.5% to 114.5%, and the coefficients of variation were 1.0%-8.5%. The half-life (t1/2 ) ranges for degradation of the three fungicides in Dangshan Su pear peel were 8.8-13.9 days after storage at 25 °C and 99.0-346.6 days after storage at 2 °C. Among the three fungicides, tebuconazole had the lowest residue concentration in pear pulp (maximum of 0.226 mg·kg-1 ) and the longest half-life (≥ 231.0 days). Accordingly, among these fungicides, tebuconazole is the most suitable for the preservation of Dangshan Su pears during storage. Finally, we analyzed samples of six pear varieties from markets in China and found that the residue concentrations of the three fungicides in pear pulp and fruit met Chinese standards. CONCLUSION: The results provide a scientific basis for rationalizing the use of prochloraz, pyraclostrobin, and tebuconazole, and improving the safety of pears for eating. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Visfatin is a recently discovered adipokine that contributes to glucose and obesity-related conditions. This study investigates Visfatin RS4730153 polymorphism from the perspectives of its relations with glucose/lipid metabolism and its influence on the effects of exercise-induced weight loss. Eighty-eight obese Han Chinese children and adolescents were randomly selected from a 2008 Shanghai Weight Loss Summer Camp and were supervised to complete a 4 week aerobic exercise training program. Significant differences were observed in before-exercise TG value and exercise-induced HOMA-ß change, with the AG group having a much higher TG value than the GG group (P ≤ 0.05), and the latter exhibiting a significantly larger before-and-after exercise HOMA-ß change than the former (P ≤ 0.05). However, no significant difference was observed between the two groups in before exercise indices of body shape, function and quality, nor in exercise-induced changes of body shape, function, and quality. Findings suggest that Visfatin RS4730153 homozygous GG genotype may effect adjustment of glucose and lipid metabolism in obese children and adolescents by reducing TG levels and increasing insulin sensitivity to exercise.

RESUMO

Visfatin, also named nicotinamide phosphoribosyl transferase (NAMPT), is a cytokine secreted from adipose tissue. Visfatin can regulate immune action and is involved in the NAD+ salvage pathway. In addition, recent researches have shown that visfatin helps the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism, especially in exercise-induced weight reduction for obesity. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the contribution of visfatin gene polymorphisms to glucose and lipid metabolism and exercise-induced weight reduction in obesity.
