PURPOSE: Breast density has consistently been shown to be an independent risk factor for breast cancer in Western populations; however, few studies have evaluated this topic in Chinese women and there is not yet a unified view. This study investigated the association between mammographic density (MD) and breast cancer risk in Chinese women. METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Wanfang databases were systematically searched in June 2023 to include all studies on the association between MD and breast cancer risk in Chinese women. A total of 13,977 breast cancer cases from 14 studies were chosen, including 10 case-control/cross-sectional studies, and 4 case-only studies. For case-control/cross-sectional studies, the odds ratios (ORs) of MD were combined using random effects models, and for case-only studies, relative odds ratios (RORs) were combinations of premenopausal versus postmenopausal breast cancer cases. RESULTS: Women with BI-RADS density category II-IV in case-control/cross-sectional studies had a 0.93-fold (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.55, 1.57), 1.08-fold (95% CI 0.40, 2.94), and 1.24-fold (95% CI 0.42, 3.69) higher risk compared to women with the lowest density category. Combined RORs for premenopausal versus postmenopausal women in case-only studies were 3.84 (95% CI 2.92, 5.05), 22.65 (95% CI 7.21, 71.13), and 42.06 (95% CI 4.22, 419.52), respectively, for BI-RADS density category II-IV versus I. CONCLUSIONS: For Chinese women, breast cancer risk is weakly associated with MD; however, breast cancer risk is more strongly correlated with mammographic density in premenopausal women than postmenopausal women. Further research on the factors influencing MD in premenopausal women may provide meaningful insights into breast cancer prevention in China.

Background and Aims: Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a serious condition, and a simple method is needed for practitioners to identify patients with the disease and have a high risk of disease progression. Methods: We developed and validated a nomogram for fatty liver disease and reclassified the risk factors for MAFLD. The development cohort had 335 patients who received bioelectrical impedance analysis and liver ultrasound attenuation measurements at Shenzhen People's Hospital between September 2020 and June 2021. The validation cohort had 200 patients from other hospitals who received the same evaluation. A random forest procedure and binary logistic analysis were used to screen for risk factors, establish a fatty liver disease predictive model, and forecast the risk of MAFLD. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated by measurement of discrimination, calibration, and clinical usefulness. Results: The nomogram provided good predictions in a model that included body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference. The areas under the curve of the nomogram were 0.793 in the development cohort and 0.774 in the validation cohort. The nomogram performed well for calibration, category-free net reclassification improvement, and integrated discrimination improvement. Decision curve analysis indicated the nomogram performed better than BMI for predicting net outcome. Conclusions: The nomogram was an effective screening tool for fatty liver disease, and for those overweight individuals, may help physicians make appropriate decisions regarding treatment of MAFLD.

Traditional encapsulated microbubbles are recently used as delivery carriers for drugs and genes, but they have low efficiency. If the local microbubble concentration could be increased, this might be able to improve the therapeutic efficacy of diseases. In this study, we developed novel cationic magnetic microbubbles (MBM), which could simultaneously realize targeted aggregation under a magnetic field as well as ultrasonographic real-time visualization. Their physicochemical properties, biocompatibility, ultrasonography, magnetic response characteristics, and biodistribution were systematically evaluated. Here, the MBM were 2.55 ± 0.14 µm in size with a positive zeta potential, and had a good biocompatibility. They were able to enhance ultrasonographic contrast both in vitro and in vivo. MBM could be attracted by an external magnet for directional movement and aggregation in vitro. We confirmed that MBM also had a great magnetic response in vivo, by means of fluorescence imaging and contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging. Following intravenous injection into tumor-bearing mice, MBM showed excellent stability in the internal circulation, and could accumulate in the tumor vasculature through magnetic targeting. With the excellent combination of magnetic response and acoustic properties, cationic magnetic microbubbles (MBM) have promising potential for use as a new kind of drug/gene carrier for theranostics in the future.

AIMS: Research related to type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and parameters of electrocardiography (ECG) was limited. Patients with and without DM (NDM) were randomly enrolled in a study to exploit the influence of DM on planar QRS and T vectors derived from the Virtual Holter process. METHODS: A total of 216 (NDM) and 127 DM patients were consecutively and randomly recruited. We selected a 1-minute length of ECG, which was scheduled for analysis at 4 AM. After a series of calculating algorisms, we received the virtual planar vector parameters. RESULTS: Patients with DM were elderly (65.61 ± 12.08 vs 59.41 ± 16.86 years, P < 0.001); higher morbidity of hypertension (76.38% vs 58.14%, P < 0.001) and coronary artery disease (44.09% vs 32.41%, P = 0.03); thicker interventricular septum (10.92 ± 1.77 vs 10.08 ± 1.96 mm, P < 0.001) and left ventricular posterior wall (9.84 ± 1.38 vs 9.39 ± 1.66 mm, P = 0.03); higher lipid levels and average heart rate (66.67 ± 12.04 vs 61.87 ± 13.36 bpm, P < 0.01); higher angle of horizontal QRS vector (HQRSA, -2.87 ± 48.48 vs -19.00 ± 40.18 degrees, P < 0.01); lower maximal magnitude of horizontal T vector (HTV, 2.33 ± 1.47 vs 2.88 ± 1.89 mm, P = 0.01) and maximal magnitude of right side T vector (2.77 ± 1.55 vs 3.27 ± 1.92 mm, P = 0.03), and no difference in angle of frontal QRS-T vector (FQRSTA, 32.77 ± 54.20 vs 28.39 ± 52.87 degrees, P = 0.74) compared with patients having NDM. After adjusting for confounding factors, DM was significantly effective on FQRSTA (regression coefficient -40.0, 95%CI -66.4 to -13.6, P < 0.01), HQRSA (regression coefficient 22.6, 95%CI 2.5 to 42.8, P = 0.03), and HTV (regression coefficient 0.9, 95%CI 0.2 to 1.7, P = 0.01). Confounding factors included: sex, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose, smoking, triglyceride, apolipoprotein A, creatinine, left ventricular ejection fraction, and average heart rate. CONCLUSIONS: The risk factors of DM and lipid metabolism abnormality particularly apolipoprotein A significantly modified parameters of virtual planar QRS and T vector, including frontal QRS-T angle.
