RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa that is characterized by symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, nasal itching, and rhinorrhoea. In recent years, acupoint herbal patching (AHP) therapy has gained a growing interest as a potential management option for AR. This systematic review and meta-analysis will evaluate the clinical research evidence on the effectiveness and safety of AHP as a treatment option for AR outside of the Sanfu or Sanjiu days (summer or winter solstice). The results of this review will provide up-to-date evidence-based guidance for healthcare providers and individuals seeking alternative treatments for AR. METHODS: A comprehensive search of electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), CQVIP, Sino-Med, and Wanfang Databases) will be conducted from their inception to June 2023. The inclusion criteria will be limited to randomized controlled trials that evaluate the effectiveness or efficacy of non-Sanfu or non-Sanjiu AHP for AR. The primary outcome measure will be the total nasal symptom score. The methodological quality of included studies will be assessed using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2), and meta-analyses will be performed using RevMan (V.5.3) statistical software. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach will be used to determine the certainty of evidence. DISCUSSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness and safety of non-Sanfu or non-Sanjiu AHP as a treatment option for AR. The study aims to produce a high-quality review by adhering to PRISMA-P guidelines and using clinical guideline recommended outcome measures. The results of this review may offer additional treatment options for AR patients who seek complementary and alternative therapies, and hold significant implications for future research in this field. Overall, this study has the potential to inform clinical practice and improve patient outcomes. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: PROSPERO CRD42022181322.

RESUMO

In situ stabilization of trace elements by adding cheap amendments is an emerging technology for large-scale soil remediation. Various amendments have been examined well in the literature, but related have focused predominantly on short-term laboratory scale incubation or pot experiments. This study applied dolomitic lime at 40 ton ha-1, oyster shell (OS) at 80 ton ha-1, and sugarcane bagasse compost (SC) at 60 ton ha-1 to a paddy field in Taiwan for two rice (Oryza sativa L.) cropping seasons. The aims of study were to gain an understanding of the bioavailable concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn in the amended soil and the metal uptake of rice for practical amendment use in field-scale remediation of contaminated soils. The treatments of lime and OS significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the 0.1 N HCl-extractable metals in the soil. The increase in soil pH was the key factor in decreasing the bioavailable pool of metals in the soil by using lime and OS. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Ni in the brown rice were substantially reduced only through the addition of OS, and thus OS met the requirement of being a cheap, locally available, and environmentally compatible amendment for field-scale soil remediation. The translocation of Cr in rice plants is heavily restricted, and thus no significant differences in Cr uptake by rice grain were observed between the different amendment treatments. However, SC is not recommended as an immobilization agent because it caused a pH decrease in the amended soil.

RESUMO

We investigated the extractability of nickel (Ni) in serpentine soils collected from rice paddy fields in eastern Taiwan to evaluate the bioavailability of Ni in the soils as well as for demonstrating the health risks of Ni in rice. Total Ni concentrations in the soils ranged were 70.2-2730 mg/kg (mean, 472 mg/kg), greatly exceeding the natural background content and soil control standard in Taiwan. Available Ni concentration only accounts for <10% of total soil Ni content; 0.1 N HCl-extractable Ni was the more suitable index for Ni bioavailability in the soil to rice than was diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable Ni. The accumulation ability of rice roots was much higher than that of its shoots; however, compared with those reported previously, our brown and polished rice samples contained much higher Ni concentrations, within the ranges of 1.50-4.53 and 2.45-5.54 mg/kg, respectively. On the basis of the provisional tolerable Ni intake for adults recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), daily consumption of this rice can result in an excessive Ni intake.
