RESUMO

Aeolis Mons (informally, Mount Sharp) exhibits a number of canyons, including Gediz and Sakarya Valles. Poorly sorted debris deposits are evident on both canyon floors and connect with debris extending down the walls for canyon segments that cut through sulphate-bearing strata. On the floor of Gediz Vallis, debris overfills a central channel and merges with a massive debris ridge located at the canyon terminus. One wall-based debris ridge is evident. In comparison, the floor of Sakarya Vallis exhibits a complex array of debris deposits. Debris deposits on wall segments within Sakarya Vallis are mainly contained within chutes that extend downhill from scarps. Lateral debris ridges are also evident on chute margins. We interpret the debris deposits in the two canyons to be a consequence of one or more late-stage hydrogeomorphic events that increased the probability of landslides, assembled and channelized debris on the canyon floors, and moved materials down-canyon. The highly soluble nature of the sulphate-bearing rocks likely contributed to enhanced debris generation by concurrent aqueous weathering to produce blocky regolith for transport downslope by fluvial activity and landslides, including some landslides that became debris flows. Subsequent wind erosion in Gediz Vallis removed most of the debris deposits within that canyon and partially eroded the deposits within Sakarya Vallis. The enhanced wind erosion within Gediz Vallis was a consequence of the canyon's alignment with prevailing slope winds.

RESUMO

Earth's most severe climate changes occurred during global-scale "snowball Earth" glaciations, which profoundly altered the planet's atmosphere, oceans, and biosphere. Extreme rates of glacioeustatic sea level rise are predicted by the snowball Earth hypothesis, but supporting geologic evidence has been lacking. We use paleohydraulic analysis of wave ripples and tidal laminae in the Elatina Formation, Australia-deposited after the Marinoan glaciation ~635 million years ago-to show that water depths of 9 to 16 meters remained nearly constant for ~100 years throughout 27 meters of sediment accumulation. This accumulation rate was too great to have been accommodated by subsidence and instead indicates an extraordinarily rapid rate of sea level rise (0.2 to 0.27 meters per year). Our results substantiate a fundamental prediction of snowball Earth models of rapid deglaciation during the early transition to a supergreenhouse climate.

RESUMO

The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity visited two active wind-blown sand dunes within Gale crater, Mars, which provided the first ground-based opportunity to compare Martian and terrestrial eolian dune sedimentary processes and study a modern analog for the Martian eolian rock record. Orbital and rover images of these dunes reveal terrestrial-like and uniquely Martian processes. The presence of grainfall, grainflow, and impact ripples resembled terrestrial dunes. Impact ripples were present on all dune slopes and had a size and shape similar to their terrestrial counterpart. Grainfall and grainflow occurred on dune and large-ripple lee slopes. Lee slopes were ~29° where grainflows were present and ~33° where grainfall was present. These slopes are interpreted as the dynamic and static angles of repose, respectively. Grain size measured on an undisturbed impact ripple ranges between 50 µm and 350 µm with an intermediate axis mean size of 113 µm (median: 103 µm). Dissimilar to dune eolian processes on Earth, large, meter-scale ripples were present on all dune slopes. Large ripples had nearly symmetric to strongly asymmetric topographic profiles and heights ranging between 12 cm and 28 cm. The composite observations of the modern sedimentary processes highlight that the Martian eolian rock record is likely different from its terrestrial counterpart because of the large ripples, which are expected to engender a unique scale of cross stratification. More broadly, however, in the Bagnold Dune Field as on Earth, dune-field pattern dynamics and basin-scale boundary conditions will dictate the style and distribution of sedimentary processes.

RESUMO

Wind blowing over sand on Earth produces decimeter-wavelength ripples and hundred-meter- to kilometer-wavelength dunes: bedforms of two distinct size modes. Observations from the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reveal that Mars hosts a third stable wind-driven bedform, with meter-scale wavelengths. These bedforms are spatially uniform in size and typically have asymmetric profiles with angle-of-repose lee slopes and sinuous crest lines, making them unlike terrestrial wind ripples. Rather, these structures resemble fluid-drag ripples, which on Earth include water-worked current ripples, but on Mars instead form by wind because of the higher kinematic viscosity of the low-density atmosphere. A reevaluation of the wind-deposited strata in the Burns formation (about 3.7 billion years old or younger) identifies potential wind-drag ripple stratification formed under a thin atmosphere.

RESUMO

The landforms of northern Gale crater on Mars expose thick sequences of sedimentary rocks. Based on images obtained by the Curiosity rover, we interpret these outcrops as evidence for past fluvial, deltaic, and lacustrine environments. Degradation of the crater wall and rim probably supplied these sediments, which advanced inward from the wall, infilling both the crater and an internal lake basin to a thickness of at least 75 meters. This intracrater lake system probably existed intermittently for thousands to millions of years, implying a relatively wet climate that supplied moisture to the crater rim and transported sediment via streams into the lake basin. The deposits in Gale crater were then exhumed, probably by wind-driven erosion, creating Aeolis Mons (Mount Sharp).

RESUMO

We report a case of congenital cerebral glioblastoma. The initial antenatal ultrasound scan showed a peripheral area of high reflectivity within the right cerebral hemisphere. A subsequent scan showed that the area of high reflectivity had increased in size to completely fill the hemisphere, with shift of the falx and contralateral ventriculomegaly. Glioblastoma is one of the least common congenital brain tumours and has the poorest prognosis with no recorded cases surviving beyond one year.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to assess the value of calculated fetal weight in the detection of the small-for-menstrual-age fetus. An ultrasound screening scan was performed on 1624 singleton pregnancies at 30 weeks to 36 weeks, menstrual age. Head, abdomen, and femur diaphysis measurements were recorded and used to estimate fetal weight. These and other more widely used parameters were used to predict birth weight below the 10th percentile for menstrual age. Estimated fetal weight at 34 weeks achieved sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 70%, the best result for any parameter. Specificity is improved using growth measurements.

RESUMO

5'-Nucleotidase, an integral glycoprotein enzyme of the lymphocyte plasma membrane, is inhibited cooperatively by the lectin concanavalin A. Because divalent succinyl-concanavalin A is a poor enzyme inhibitor, both binding and lectin-induced cross-linking of 5'-nucleotidase may be necessary for inhibition. Succinyl-concanavalin A does not compete with concanavalin A for binding to the enzyme; however, maleyl-concanavalin A, another poor inhibitor, competes effectively with the parent lectin. Thus, maleyl-concanavalin A binds to the same site as concanavalin A but causes little inhibition, whereas succinyl-concanavalin A does not bind to this site. The monovalent lectin from Ricinus communis (RCA-60) is a more effective enzyme inhibitor than the related divalent lectin (RCA-120), and inactivation of the second low-affinity sugar binding site on RCA-60 does not abolish inhibition, suggesting that multivalent cross-linking is not required for 5'-nucleotidase inhibition. Peanut and wheat germ agglutinins do not inhibit the enzyme, whereas lectins from lentil, pea, soybean, Griffonia simplicifolia, and Phaseolus vulgaris inhibit 5'-nucleotidase with various degrees of effectiveness. The only lectin showing strong positive cooperativity in its interaction with 5'-nucleotidase is concanavalin A.

RESUMO

A method for estimating fetal weight by calculating an approximate fetal volume from abdominal area, head area and femur length has been developed. Birthweights were calculated within 48 h before delivery for 434 patients, using this method and two other methods already in widespread use. Statistical analysis of the three sets of predictions gave standard deviations of 297 g for the new method, compared with 323 g and 342 g for the other methods. Further analysis of the data showed that estimates closest to the true birthweight were obtained in 41% of cases by using the new method, and in 33% and 26% of cases using the other methods.

RESUMO

Human erythrocyte band 3, reconstituted into large unilamellar phospholipid vesicles, has been used as a model system for studying the interactions between membrane lipids and large transmembrane glycoproteins. Both 2H-nuclear magnetic resonance (2H-NMR) and differential scanning calorimetric techniques have been used to probe dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine-band 3 interactions over the temperature range 4-32 degrees C. Analysis of 2H-NMR spectra allowed the assignment of liquid crystal, gel phase and two-phase regions for several protein/lipid mole fractions in the range (1-20) X 10(-4). Sample size was limited by the amount of available glycoprotein and this precluded exact determination of the phase boundaries for this system. The sharp discontinuity in the spectral first moment, M1, seen at the phase transition of the pure phospholipid is progressively diminished by addition of protein, and at the highest protein concentration the first moment varies smoothly between the two phases. For T greater than 26 degrees C or less than 16 degrees C, the moments are relatively insensitive to protein concentration, while between 20 and 26 degrees C the moments increase with protein concentration up to the boundary of the two-phase region. Beyond this boundary, they remain constant or decrease slightly with increasing amount of protein. A preliminary phase diagram for band 3 in this lipid system is presented, based on 2H-NMR data. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that addition of glycoprotein dramatically alters the scan shape and tends to extend the coexistence of two phases to higher temperatures.

RESUMO

Pure 5'-nucleotidase (EC 3.1.3.5) and a membrane glycoprotein fraction (partially purified 5'-nucleotidase) were isolated from pig lymphocyte plasma membrane by affinity chromatography techniques, using the cationic detergent dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide as a solubilizing agent. A detergent-dialysis technique was used to reconstitute both partially purified and pure enzyme into large unilamellar phospholipid vesicles, where it remains functional. 5'-Nucleotidase is relatively unstable in detergent solutions, but is highly stable once reconstituted into lipid vesicles. Arrhenius plots of the enzyme in bilayers of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine show a break point at 22-23 degrees C, with a different activation energy above and below the phospholipid gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition. 5'-Nucleotidase in intact plasma membrane is inhibited more than 95% by concanavalin A in a positively cooperative fashion (Hill coefficient = 2.1), as is partially purified reconstituted enzyme. Purification of the enzyme before reconstitution results in less than 50% inhibition by concanavalin A and a complete loss of positive cooperativity (Hill coefficient less than 1.0). The inhibition properties of the enzyme can be fully restored by co-reconstituting pure 5'-nucleotidase with the remaining lymphocyte glycoproteins.
