The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), is a cryptic species complex that attacks >600 different species of plants and transmits several plant viruses causing severe economic losses. Until 2010, the B. tabaci complex comprised 24 distinct putative species. Recently, at least 15 new species have been reported. The objective of this study was to identify B. tabaci species present in bean, melon, and tomato crops in Argentina by applying phylogenetic analyses and pairwise comparison of genetic distances of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) sequences. The 39 proposed whitefly species were identified with both analyses, and the presence in Argentina of one indigenous species, New World 2 (NW2), and two introduced species, Middle East-Asia Minor one (MEAM1) and Mediterranean, was confirmed. Common bean crop presented the three whitefly species detected, with NW2, MEAM1, and Mediterranean being present all together under field conditions. Also, Mediterranean was the only species identified in tomato, whereas MEAM1 was found in melon. To the best of our knowledge, Mediterranean is a recent invasive species in open-field agriculture in the American continent and in greenhouse tomato in Argentina. Additionally, we provide the first report of MEAM1 in common bean and melon. These findings raise several questions on the future scenario of B. tabaci and the viruses it transmits in Argentina.

The mobilization of fatty acids during food deprivation is a selective process studied in different species (humans, rodents, birds, viverrids). The aim of this work was to study the effect of fasting on selective mobilization in commercial pigs. A total of 16 barrows (Large White×Landrace (167 kg±12.5 kg live weight) were subdivided into two homogeneous groups, one subjected to 12 h and the other to 60 h of fasting (fasting time) before slaughtering. For each pig inner and outer backfat layer were sampled at slaughter and at ham trimming 24 h later (sampling time). Increasing the fasting time and the sampling time after slaughter caused an increase in the amount of free fatty acids in both layers. Therefore it can be argued that during fasting lipolysis is stimulated and remains active also after slaughtering. The factors that stimulate lipolysis determine a greater mobilization of unsaturated fatty acids than saturated ones. Thus fasting time may influence the suitability of pork for processing and conservation, since free fatty acids are more suitable for oxidation than the esterified ones.

Begomoviruses seriously threaten tomato production in South America. Here, we present the molecular characterization of a novel tomato-infecting begomovirus isolated in Argentina and demonstrate its infectivity. After cloning and sequencing the complete genome of this new virus, pairwise genetic distance and phylogenetic analyses revealed that it is a novel virus that is closely related to other begomoviruses found in Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. We have proposed naming the virus tomato mottle wrinkle virus (ToMoWrV), based on symptoms produced upon its biolistic inoculation into tomato plants. Recombination analysis revealed that ToMoWrV is a recombinant, with parental sequences likely belonging to the South American begomoviruses soybean blistering mosaic virus (SoBlMV) and tomato yellow vein streak virus (ToYVSV).

Begomovirus infection is becoming a threat in fresh-market tomato in Argentina, where mixed infections with begomoviruses are common. The complete sequence of a begomovirus isolate infecting tomato sampled in Salta was molecularly characterized. Phylogenetic analysis showed that this virus isolate is closely related to previously reported Brazilian, Bolivian and Argentinean begomoviruses. The associated symptoms in Nicotiana benthamiana and Solanum lycopersicum were determined by biolistic delivery of infectious DNA-A and DNA-B clones. This begomovirus isolate induced leaf mottling, rugosity and dwarfing, and growth retardation in tomato. Based on these symptoms, we propose the name of tomato dwarf leaf virus (ToDLV) for this new begomovirus.

Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale of Modena (ABTM) is a typical product (PDO denomination) of the province of Modena produced by cooked grape must which undergoes a long ageing period (at least 12 years) in series of wooden casks (batterie). The study of the transformations of this product during ageing is extremely relevant in order to control the authenticity of ABTM towards succedaneous products and mislabelling of age. This paper presents the results of the investigation of sugars and fixed organic acids in ABTM samples of different ages, coming from different batterie. The analytes were simultaneously determined by a gas chromatographic method optimised for this peculiar matrix. The method shows good separation and resolution of the investigated chemical species and allows their determination in the concentration ranges reported in brackets: malic (7.6-15.5 g kg(-1)), tartaric (4.0-9.7 g kg(-1)), citric (0.6-1.5 g kg(-1)) and succinic (0.36-0.62 g kg(-1)) acid and glucose (153-294 g kg(-1)), fructose (131-279 g kg(-1)), xylose (011-0.39 g kg(-1)), ribose (0.078-0.429 g kg(-1)), rhamnose (0.061-0.195 g kg(-1)), galactose (0.136-0.388 g kg(-1)), mannose (0.41-1.46 g kg(-1)), arabinose (0.33-1.00 g kg(-1)) and sucrose (0.46-6.84 g kg(-1)), with mean associated errors ranging from 5 to 19% depending on the analytes. Moreover, the recovery values are always satisfactory, being close to one for most of the analytes. Furthermore, in order to assess the degree of variability of the different analytes content with vinegar ageing and the similarity/dissimilarity among series of casks a three-way data analysis method (Tucker3) is proposed. The chemometric technique applied on the data set shows differences between the samples on the bases of their different ageing period, and between the batterie, which traditionally have an own peculiar production procedure.

"Peste negra" is a disease, caused by tospoviruses, that affects tomato crops in Argentina. Knowledge of the diversity, frequency, and distribution of different tospoviruses is essential for developing a rational control program based on genetic resistance sources. A study of the geographical distribution of tospoviruses affecting tomato crops in Argentina is presented in this paper. The areas surveyed were between the Tropic of Capricorn and 40°S and between longitude 58°W and 70°W. Tospovirus species were identified through double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA), using polyclonal antisera against Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), Groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV), and Tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV). From tomato samples that reacted positively with any of the used antisera, 63% were GRSV, 28.2% were TCSV, and 8.8% were TSWV. A differential geographical distribution of tospoviruses was determined. Every plant that tested positive for GRSV was from central and northwest Argentina, while every plant TCSV-positive was from the northeast. TSWV was found only in the Río Negro Valley region in the south of the country. The wide dispersion of GRSV may be related to the spread of Frankliniella shultzei, which transmits this virus more efficiently than other vectors.
