RESUMO

The current study assessed whether an extended program of martial arts training was a viable intervention for at-risk youths in improving cognitive and psychological functions. Adolescent boys attending specialized education facilities for at-risk youths took part in regular sport lessons or martial arts practice twice a week for 6 months. Hormonal reactivity was assessed during initial training, and measures of psychological (aggression, self-esteem) and cognitive (inhibition, flexibility, speed of processing, and attention) functions were assessed before and immediately following the intervention. Participants in the martial arts training demonstrated significant improvement in the domains of inhibition and shifting and speed of processing. Additionally, initial hormonal reactivity (oxytocin and cortisol) to the intervention predicted significant post-intervention change on several measures of cognitive and psychological functioning. Specifically, oxytocin reactivity predicted improvement in processing speed, as well as reduction of aggression, whereas cortisol reactivity predicted increases in self-esteem. This pioneering, ecologically valid study demonstrates the initial efficacy of this enjoyable, readily available, group intervention for at-risk boys and suggests potential mechanisms that may mediate the process of change.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a steadily rising health concern associated with significant risk of emotional, behavioral and cognitive impairments. Cognitive memory impairment is one of the most concerning outcomes after TBI, affecting a wide range of everyday activities, social interactions and employment. Several comparative and comprehensive reviews on the effects of cognitive interventions in individuals with TBI have been conducted but usually with a qualitative rather than quantitative approach. Thus, evidence synthesis of the effects of TBI interventions on memory difficulties is limited. OBJECTIVE: In this meta-analysis, we examined the memory-remediating effects of internal and external interventions, injury severity and the interaction of both factors for patients with TBI. METHODS: Data were extracted from studies published between 1980 and 2020 that used objective memory measures (computerized or pencil-and-paper), and multiple meta-analyses were conducted to compare effectiveness across these interventions. Publication bias was assessed, as was quality of evidence using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized controlled studies. Our final meta-analysis included 16 studies of 17 interventions classified into 3 categories: internal, external and mixed. RESULTS: Mixed interventions demonstrated the highest average effect size for memory difficulties (Morris d=0.79). An evaluation of injury severity yielded 2 categories: mild-moderate and moderate-severe. Analyses demonstrated a homogenous medium effect size of improvement across injury severity, with moderate-severe injury with the largest average effect size (Morris d=0.65). Further evaluation of injury severity interaction with intervention type revealed a mediating effect for both factors, demonstrating the largest effect size for mixed interventions with moderate-severe injury (Morris d=0.81). CONCLUSION: This study highlights the effectiveness of memory remediation interventions on memory impairment after TBI. A wide range of interventions are more effective because they address individual variability for severity and memory deficits. The study further supports and expands existing intervention standards and guidelines.

Managing attention in multispeaker environments is a challenging feat that is critical for human performance. However, why some people are better than others in allocating attention appropriately remains highly unknown. Here, we investigated the contribution of two factors-working memory capacity (WMC) and professional experience-to performance on two different types of attention task: selective attention to one speaker and distributed attention among multiple concurrent speakers. We compared performance across three groups: individuals with low (n = 20) and high (n = 25) WMC, and aircraft pilots (n = 24), whose profession poses extremely high demands for both selective and distributed attention to speech. Results suggests that selective attention is highly effective, with good performance maintained under increasingly adverse conditions, whereas performance decreases substantially with the requirement to distribute attention among a larger number of speakers. Importantly, both types of attention benefit from higher WMC, suggesting reliance on some common capacity-limited resources. However, only selective attention was further improved in the pilots, pointing to its flexible and trainable nature, whereas distributed attention seems to suffer from more fixed and severe processing bottlenecks.

Executive functions are considered essential for effective navigation in the social world. Parental responsiveness is a critical ingredient for normative social development and, as such, may be connected with the development of executive functions. Disruption of this development may, in turn, lead to maladaptive and antisocial behaviors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nature of the connections among perceived patterns of caregiving experienced in childhood, executive functions, and antisocial behaviors in at-risk adolescents. Seventy-one adolescent boys were recruited from two high-schools for adolescents who were not deemed suitable for regular schooling due to behavioral and emotional issues. Executive functions were tested using a computer-administered neuropsychological battery (CANTAB), and maternal parenting experiences and antisocial behaviors were assessed using retrospective and current questionnaires. Structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was employed to examine whether executive functions mediated the relationship between children's perceived patterns of maternal care and subsequent development of antisocial behaviors. Although maternal care had a significant direct effect on executive function (standardized coefficient = .49, p = .03) and antisocial behavior (standardized coefficient = .53, p = .05), SEM demonstrated no mediating relationships among these variables. Instead, maternal care predicted unique variance in both executive functions (standardized coefficient = .61, p = .02) and antisocial behavior (standardized coefficient = .51, p = .05). This study suggests a link between the experience of childhood caregiving and adolescent executive functions and delinquency and highlights the importance of early parenting interventions to aid executive function development. Such early interventions could potentially enhance long-term pro-social behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Early detection is critical in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). An at-risk population for cardiac disease-and conveniently approachable in terms of timing-is cardiac patients' offspring, at the moment when the parent is hospitalized for his or her own cardiac event. Based on the theoretical underpinning of life turning points, defined as perceived life course-changing events, we suggest that adult children would view the parent's cardiac event as a significant life turning point and that this understanding would motivate them to learn about CVD and to change their lifestyles accordingly. The current study's main goal was therefore to assess the baseline level and change over time in the adult offspring's knowledge of cardiac risk factors and cardiac health-promoting behaviors. METHOD: In a prospective design, 69 Israeli adult offspring of individuals newly diagnosed with an acute coronary event were approached and interviewed at 3 time points (on average 17 days, 55 days, and 125 days after the parent's hospitalization). RESULTS: Contrary to our assumption, no significant change over time was detected among the adult children with regard to body mass index, physical activity, eating behaviors, or smoking. In fact, over time, they seemed to know less about CVD risk factors than they did originally. CONCLUSION: Adult children of cardiac patients seem to be reluctant to spontaneously engage in health-promoting behaviors. The option of approaching them, in a primary preventive act, as early as during a parent's hospitalization should be further investigated. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in children and is associated with significant risk of educational failure, interpersonal problems, mental illness, and delinquency. Despite a number of comparative and comprehensive reviews on the effects of ADHD treatments on ADHD core symptoms, evidence synthesizing the effects of ADHD interventions on cognitive difficulties is limited. In this meta-analysis, the neuropsychological effects of non-pharmacological interventions for ADHD were examined across studies published between 1980 and 2017. Data were extracted from studies that used objective cognitive measures (either computerized or pencil-and-paper), and multiple meta-analyses were conducted to compare the effectiveness across these interventions. Publication bias was assessed, as well as quality of the evidence, using Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized control trials studies. Our final meta-analysis included 18 studies with interventions that were categorized into four categories: neurofeedback, cognitive-behavioral therapy, cognitive training, and physical exercises. Physical exercises demonstrated the highest average effect size (Morris d = 0.93). A further evaluation of cognitive functions yielded 49 effect sizes for the five categories, including attention, inhibition, flexibility, and working memory. Analyses demonstrated a homogenous, medium to large, effect size of improvement across interventions, with inhibition demonstrating the largest average effect size (Morris d = 0.685). This study highlights the positive effect of psychological interventions on ADHD cognitive symptomology and supports the inclusion of non-pharmacological interventions in conjunction with the commonly used pharmacological treatments.
