RESUMO

The real-time reconstruction of the displacement field of a structure from a network of in situ strain sensors is commonly referred to as "shape sensing". The inverse finite element method (iFEM) stands out as a highly effective and promising approach to perform this task. In the current investigation, this technique is employed to monitor different plate structures experiencing flexural and torsional deformation fields. In order to reduce the number of installed sensors and obtain more accurate results, the iFEM is applied in synergy with smoothing element analysis (SEA), which allows the pre-extrapolation of the strain field over the entire structure from a limited number of measurement points. For the SEA extrapolation to be effective for a multitude of load cases, it is necessary to position the strain sensors appropriately. In this study, an innovative sensor placement strategy that relies on a multi-objective genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is proposed. This approach aims to minimize the root mean square error of the pre-extrapolated strain field across a set of mode shapes for the examined plate structures. The optimized strain reconstruction is subsequently utilized as input for the iFEM technique. Comparisons are drawn between the displacement field reconstructions obtained using the proposed methodology and the conventional iFEM. In order to validate such methodology, two different numerical case studies, one involving a rectangular cantilevered plate and the other encompassing a square plate clamped at the edges, are investigated. For the considered case studies, the results obtained by the proposed approach reveal a significant improvement in the monitoring capabilities over the basic iFEM algorithm with the same number of sensors.

Due to the widespread use of sandwich structures in many industries and the importance of understanding their mechanical behavior, this paper studies the thermomechanical buckling behavior of sandwich beams with a functionally graded material (FGM) middle layer and two composite external layers. Both composite skins are made of Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) reinforced by carbon-nano-tubes (CNTs). The properties of the FGM core are predicted through an exponential-law and power-law theory (E&P), whereas an Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka (EMT) formulation is applied to capture the mechanical properties of the external layers. Moreover, different high-order displacement fields are combined with a virtual displacement approach to derive the governing equations of the problem, here solved analytically based on a Navier-type approximation. A parametric study is performed to check for the impact of different core materials and CNT concentrations inside the PMMA on the overall response of beams resting on a Pasternak substrate and subjected to a hygrothermal loading. This means that the sensitivity analysis accounts for different displacement fields, hygrothermal environments, and FGM theories, as a novel aspect of the present work. Our results could be replicated in a computational sense, and could be useful for design purposes in aerospace industries to increase the tolerance of target productions, such as aircraft bodies.

In the last few decades, piezoelectric (PZT) materials have played a vital role in the aerospace industry because of their energy harvesting capability. PZT energy harvesters (PEH) absorb the energy from an operational environment and can transform it into useful energy to drive nano/micro-electronic components. In this research work, a PEH based on the flag-flutter mechanism is presented. This mechanism is based on fluid-structure interaction (FSI). The flag is subjected to the axial airflow in the subsonic wind tunnel. The performance evaluation of the harvester and aeroelastic analysis is investigated numerically and experimentally. A novel solution is presented to extract energy from Limit Cycle Oscillations (LCOs) phenomenon by means of PZT transduction. The PZT patch absorbs the flow-induced structural vibrations and transforms it into electrical energy. Furthermore, the optimal resistance and length of the flag is predicted to maximize the energy harvesting. Different configurations of flag i.e., with Aluminium (Al) patch and PZT patch for flutter mode vibration mode are studied numerically and experimentally. The bifurcation diagram is constructed for the experimental campaign for the flutter instability of a cantilevered flag in subsonic wind-tunnel. Moreover, the flutter boundary conditions are analysed for reduced critical velocity and frequency. The designed PZT energy harvester via flag-flutter mechanism is suitable for energy harvesting in aerospace engineering applications to drive wireless sensors. The maximum output power that can be generated from the designed harvester is 6.72 mW and the optimal resistance is predicted to be 0.33 MΩ.
