BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an age-related clinical syndrome, which is associated with numerous adverse outcomes among older adults. The relationship between sarcopenia and activities of daily living (ADL) disability has been studied in China, but these findings usually focused on a single time point. The patterns of ADL can change over time and vary among individuals. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the association between sarcopenia and trajectories of ADL disability. METHODS: According to Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 criteria, muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance measurements were measured to diagnose sarcopenia. A six-item ADL score was used to measure ADL disability, and trajectories of ADL disability were identified by the latent class trajectory modelling (LCTM). Multiple logistic regression models were performed to examine the association between sarcopenia and trajectories of ADL disability. RESULTS: Among 9113 middle-aged and older adults, three trajectories of ADL disability were determined according to changes in ADL score during follow-up, including a mild-high trajectory (n = 648, 7.11%), followed by the low-mild trajectory (n = 3120, 34.24%) and low-low trajectory (n = 5345, 58.65%). After adjustment for covariates, severe sarcopenia was significantly associated with higher risks of being in the mild-high trajectory group (OR = 3.31, 95%CI: 2.10-5.22) and the low-mild trajectory group (OR = 1.44, 95%CI: 1.05-1.98), compared with the low-low trajectory group. This association was still observed when stratified by age and gender. In addition, participants with sarcopenic obesity were associated with a higher risk of ADL disability (OR = 3.99; 95% CI: 2.50-6.09). CONCLUSIONS: Among the middle-aged and older Chinese adults, sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity were both associated with persistent higher trajectories of ADL disability. It suggested that early interventions to sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity among the middle-aged and older adults may reduce the progression of ADL disability.

Background: We aimed to estimate the prevalence and incidence of syphilis at global, regional and national levels for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive and HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) and explore the association between demographic and social behavioural factors and syphilis infection. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2022 for studies of reported crude syphilis prevalence or incidence in MSM or with sufficient data to calculate prevalence or incidence rate in MSM. Results: We included 376 articles reporting on 409 records from 62 countries to calculate syphilis prevalence and incidence in MSM. The pooled prevalence of syphilis in MSM was 10.4%, with substantial differences between countries and regions. Syphilis prevalence was substantially higher in HIV-positive than in HIV-negative MSM. The pooled incidence of syphilis in MSM was 76.4 per 1000 person-years. Older age, lower education, nitrite or recreational drug use, group sex, and multiple sexual partners were identified as risk factors for syphilis infection. Conclusions: A disproportionate geographic pattern of syphilis infection in MSM and significant threats of syphilis infection were revealed. The 'hidden risk' in specific regions and the inadequately elucidated drivers of high-risk behaviours, need to be fully acknowledged and addressed. Registration: PROSPERO: CRD42023422218.

KEY MESSAGE: By integrating QTL fine mapping and transcriptomics, a candidate gene responsible for oil content in rapeseed was identified. The gene is anticipated to primarily function in photosynthesis and photosystem metabolism pathways. Brassica napus is one of the most important oil crops in the world, and enhancing seed oil content is an important goal in its genetic improvement. However, the underlying genetic basis for the important trait remains poorly understood in this crop. We previously identified a major locus, OILA5 responsible for seed oil content on chromosome A5 through genome-wide association study. To better understand the genetics of the QTL, we performed fine mapping of OILA5 with a double haploid population and a BC3F2 segregation population consisting of 6227 individuals. We narrowed down the QTL to an approximate 43 kb region with twelve annotated genes, flanked by markers ZDM389 and ZDM337. To unveil the potential candidate gene responsible for OILA5, we integrated fine mapping data with transcriptome profiling using high and low oil content near-isogenic lines. Among the candidate genes, BnaA05G0439400ZS was identified with high expression levels in both seed and silique tissues. This gene exhibited homology with AT3G09840 in Arabidopsis that was annotated as cell division cycle 48. We designed a site-specific marker based on resequencing data and confirmed its effectiveness in both natural and segregating populations. Our comprehensive results provide valuable genetic information not only enhancing our understanding of the genetic control of seed oil content but also novel germplasm for advancing high seed oil content breeding in B. napus and other oil crops.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To assess the correlation between serum uric acid (UA) level and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) patients in Anhui, China. METHODS: A total of 231 patients diagnosed with T1DM in our hospital were enrolled between January 2014 and December 2016. Urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR) in patients with hyperuricemia was compared with those without hyperuricemia. The relationship between serum UA level and urinary ACR was examined by Spearman's correlational analysis and multiple stepwise regression analysis. The binary logistic multivariate regression analysis was performed to analyze the correlated factors for type 1 DKD. RESULTS: The average serum UA levels were 257.7 [215.0, 338.0]µmol/L. The median levels of urinary ACR were significantly higher in patients with hyperuricemia than those without hyperuricemia. In multiple stepwise regression analysis, Serum UA levels were positively correlated with the urinary ACR. The logistic multivariate regression analysis showed that hyperuricemia (OR: 5.24, 95% CI: 1.40-19.65, P = 0.014) had an independent positive correlation with DKD in T1DM patients, and the odds of Serum UA to DKD were both elevated as the serum UA levels rose no matter whether adjustment for traditional confounders. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.62 (95% CI: 0.55-0.70) in assessing the discrimination of the serum UA level for DKD in T1DM patients. CONCLUSIONS: In Chinese patients with T1DM, the serum UA level is positively correlated with urinary ACR and DKD. The correlation between Serum UA and DKD gradually increases with serum UA levels. Serum UA level is not a good predictor for DKD in T1DM patients. Serum UA may directly contribute to initiating DKD, while it has little direct but an indirect effect on an already established DKD in T1DM patients.

The Santos Basin, located in the southeastern waters of Brazil, is a passive continental margin basin with the most abundant deepwater petroleum resources in the world discovered to date. However, few studies have been conducted on the present geothermal fields of the Santos Basin, which severely restricts the oil and gas resource evaluation of the basin. This study first utilizes 35 temperature data from 16 post-salt drilling wells and 370 temperature data from 31 pre-salt drilling wells to calculate the post-salt and pre-salt geothermal gradients and terrestrial heat flows in the Santos Basin. Then, the basin simulation software BasinMod 1D is used to quantitatively evaluate the impacts of salt rock sedimentation on the present geothermal fields and the maturity of pre-salt hydrocarbon source rocks. The results demonstrate that the present post-salt geothermal gradient in the Santos Basin is 2.20-3.97 °C/100 m, with an average value of 2.99 °C /100 m, and the post-salt terrestrial heat flow is 54.00-97.32 mW/m2, with an average value of 73.36 mW/m2, while the present pre-salt geothermal gradient is 2.21-2.95 °C/100 m, with an average value of 2.53 °C/100 m, and the pre-salt terrestrial heat flow is 61.85-82.59 mW/m2, with an average value of 70.69 mW/m2. These values are characteristic of a low-temperature geothermal field in a zone with a stable structure. The sedimentation of the salt rock causes a decrease in the temperature of the pre-salt strata, which inhibits pre-salt hydrocarbon source rock maturity, with an inhibition rate of up to 1.32%. The inhibition degree decreases with increasing salt rock thickness. At the same time, the salt rock thickness is positively correlated with the present surface heat flow. The unique distribution of the salt rock and related salt structures lead to present terrestrial heat flow differences among different structural units in the basin. This study is of great significance for evaluating and exploring the pre-salt oil and gas resources in the Santos Basin.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To assess the correlation between serum uric acid (UA) level and diabetic kidney disease among adult-onset Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients in China. METHODS: A total of 184 patients with adult-onset T1DM between January 2014 and December 2016 were recruited, with demographics and medical data collected. Comparisons were performed between according to different serum UA gender-specific quartiles. Relationship between serum UA level with urinary ACR and eGFR was also assessed. RESULTS: Median urinary ACR and eGFR were 21.55 [10.79, 45.02] mg/g and 113.86 [88.43, 143.61] ml/min/1.73 m2, respectively. The median UA was 257.4 (208.2-334.8) µmol/L. Participants with higher serum UA levels had higher urinary ACR and lower eGFR than those with lower UA (P < 0.05). Higher serum UA level was significantly associated with higher urinary ACR in Spearman's correlational analysis (P = 0.006) and multiple stepwise regression analysis (P = 0.013). The association between serum UA and urinary ACR was not linear, but showed a curve correlation, which also showed in the sensitivity analysis. Serum UA in the upper gender-specific quartile, was associated with lower eGFR (P < 0.001) and showed an independent negative correlation with eGFR in multiple stepwise regression analysis (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The serum UA level was negatively correlated with eGFR and had a curve correlation with urinary ACR in adult-onset T1DM patients of China.

Klebsiella pneumoniae can cause widespread infections and is an important factor of hospital- and community-acquired pneumonia. The emergence of hypervirulent K. pneumoniae poses a serious clinical therapeutic challenge and is associated with a high mortality. The goal of this work was to investigate the influence of K. pneumoniae infection on host cells, particularly pyroptosis, apoptosis, and autophagy in the context of host-pathogen interactions to better understand the pathogenic mechanism of K. pneumoniae. Two clinical K. pneumoniae isolates, one classical K. pneumoniae isolate and one hypervirulent K. pneumoniae isolate, were used to infect RAW264.7 cells to establish an in vitro infection model. We first examined the phagocytosis of macrophages infected with K. pneumoniae. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release test, and calcein-AM/PI double staining was conducted to determine the viability of macrophages. The inflammatory response was evaluated by measuring the pro-inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The occurrence of pyroptosis, apoptosis, and autophagy was assessed by detecting the mRNA and protein levels of the corresponding biochemical markers. In addition, mouse pneumonia models were constructed by intratracheal instillation of K. pneumoniae for in vivo validation experiments. As for results, hypervirulent K. pneumoniae was much more resistant to macrophage-mediated phagocytosis but caused more severe cellular damage and lung tissues damage compared with classical K. pneumoniae. Moreover, we found increased expression of NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, and GSDMD associated with pyroptosis in macrophages and lung tissues, and the levels were much higher following hypervirulent K. pneumoniae challenge. Both strains induced apoptosis in vitro and in vivo; the higher apoptosis proportion was observed in infection caused by hypervirulent K. pneumoniae. Furthermore, classical K. pneumoniae strongly triggered autophagy, while hypervirulent K. pneumoniae weakly activated this process. These findings provide novel insights into the pathogenesis of K. pneumoniae and may form the foundation for the future design of treatments for K. pneumoniae infection.

BACKGROUND: The aberrance of gray matter morphology in migraineurs has been widely investigated. However, it remains largely unknown whether there are illness duration-related hierarchical changes in the gray matter structure. METHODS: A total of 86 migraine without aura (MwoA) patients and 73 healthy controls were included. The Voxel-Based Morphometry approach was utilized to compare the gray matter volume (GMV) differences between MwoA patients and healthy controls. The Structural Covariance Network analysis was conducted to quantify the cross-regional synchronous alterations of gray matter structure in MwoA patients. The Causal Structural Covariance Network analysis was performed to describe the progressive and hierarchical changes in the gray matter network of patients in the pathological progression of migraine. RESULTS: MwoA patients had duration-stage related GMV hypertrophy in the left parahippocampus, as well as synergistic GMV aberrance in the parahippocampus and the medial inferior temporal gyrus and cerebellum. Moreover, the GMV alteration of the parahippocampus, and the surrounding hippocampus, amygdala, and bilateral anterior cerebellum, preceded and causally influenced the morphological changes of lateral parietal-temporal-occipital gyrus, as well as the motor cortex and prefrontal gyrus with the increasing illness duration in MwoA patients. CONCLUSION: The current study indicated that gray matter structural alterations in the medial inferior temporal gyrus, especially the parahippocampus, is a critical pathological characteristic in MwoA patients, which drives the gray matter structure alteration of other regions. These findings provide further evidence for understanding the progressive gray matter morphological changes in migraine and may facilitate the development of neuromodulation therapies targeting this procession.

BACKGROUND: There are debates in acupuncture related systematic reviews and meta-analyses on whether searching Chinese databases to get more Chinese-language studies may increase the risk of bias and overestimate the effect size, and whether the treatment effects of acupuncture differ between Chinese and non-Chinese populations. METHODS: In this meta-epidemiological study, we searched the Cochrane library from its inception until December 2021, and identified systematic reviews and meta-analyses with acupuncture as one of the interventions. Paired reviewers independently screened the reviews and extracted the information. We repeated the meta-analysis of the selected outcomes to separately pool the results of Chinese- and non-Chinese-language acupuncture studies and presented the pooled estimates as odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). We calculated the Ratio of ORs (ROR) by dividing the OR of the Chinese-language trials by the OR of the non-Chinese-language trials, and the ROR by dividing the OR of trials addressing Chinese population by the OR of trials addressing non-Chinese population. We explored whether the impact of a high risk of bias on the effect size differed between studies published in Chinese- and in non-Chinese-language, and whether the treatment effects of acupuncture differed between Chinese and non-Chinese population. RESULTS: We identified 84 Cochrane acupuncture reviews involving 33 Cochrane groups, of which 31 reviews (37%) searched Chinese databases. Searching versus not searching Chinese databases significantly increased the contribution of Chinese-language literature both to the total number of included trials (54% vs. 15%) and the sample size (40% vs. 15%). When compared with non-Chinese-language trials, Chinese-language trials were associated with a larger effect size (pooled ROR 0.51, 95% CI 0.29 to 0.91). We also observed a higher risk of bias in Chinese-language trials in blinding of participants and personnel (97% vs. 51%) and blinding of outcome assessment (93% vs. 47%). The higher risk of bias was associated with a larger effect estimate in both Chinese-language (allocation concealment: high/unclear risk vs. low risk, ROR 0.43, 95% CI 0.21 to 0.87) and non-Chinese-language studies (blinding of participants and personnel: high/unclear risk vs. low risk, ROR 0.41, 95% CI 0.23 to 0.74). However, we found no evidence that the higher risk of bias would increase the effect size of acupuncture in Chinese-language studies more often than in non-Chinese-language studies (the confidence intervals of all ROR in the high-risk group included 1, Table 3). We further found acupuncture appeared to be more effective in Chinese than in non-Chinese population (Table 4). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest the higher risk of bias may lead to an overestimation of the treatment effects of acupuncture but would not increase the treatment effects in Chinese-language studies more often than in other language studies. The difference in treatment effects of acupuncture was probably associated with differences in population characteristics. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate region-specific epidemiologic characteristics of influenza and influenza transmission zones (ITZs). METHODS: Weekly influenza surveillance data of 156 countries from 1996 to 2021 were obtained using FluNet. Joinpoint regression was used to describe global influenza virus trends, and clustering analyses were used to classify the ITZs. RESULTS: The global median average positive rate for total influenza virus was 16.19% (interquartile range: 11.62-25.70%). Overall, three major subtypes (influenza H1, H3, and B viruses) showed alternating epidemics. Notably, the proportion of influenza B viruses increased significantly from July 2020 to June 2021, reaching 62.66%. The primary peaks of influenza virus circulation in the north were earlier than those in the south. Global influenza virus circulation was significantly characterized by seven ITZs, including "Northern America" (primary peak: week 10), "Eastern & Southern-Asia" (primary peak: week 10), "Europe" (primary peak: week 11), "Asia-Europe" (primary peak: week 12), "Southern-America" (primary peak: week 30), "Oceania-Melanesia-Polynesia" (primary peak: week 39), and "Africa" (primary peak: week 46). CONCLUSION: Global influenza virus circulation was significantly characterized by seven ITZs that could be applied to influenza surveillance and warning.

Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) is expressed in gastrointestinal tract and plays important roles in intestinal motility and visceral hypersensitivity. However, the potential role of TRPA1 in host defense, particularly against intestinal pathogens, is unknown. Here, we show that Trpa1 knockout mice exhibited increased susceptibility to Citrobacter rodentium infection, associated with the increased severity of diarrhea and intestinal permeability associated with the disrupted tight junctions (TJs) in colonic epithelia. We further demonstrated the expression of TRPA1 in murine colonic epithelial cells (CECs) and human epithelial Caco-2 cells both at protein level and transcription level. Using calcium imaging, TRPA1 agonists allyl isothiocyanates (AITC) and hydrogen peroxide were observed to induce a transient Ca2+ response in Caco-2 cells, respectively. Moreover, TRPA1 knockdown in Caco-2 cells resulted in the decreased expression of TJ proteins, ZO-1 and Occludin, and in the increased paracellular permeabilities and the reduced TEER values of Caco-2 monolayers in vitro. Furthermore, inhibition of TRPA1 by HC-030031 in the confluent Caco-2 cells caused the altered distribution and expression of TJ proteins, ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin-3, and exacerbated the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced damage to these TJ proteins and actin cytoskeleton. By contrast, AITC pretreatment restored the distribution and expression of these TJ proteins in the confluent Caco-2 cells upon LPS challenge. Our results identify an unrecognized protective role of TRPA1 in host defense against an enteric bacterial pathogen by maintaining colonic epithelium barrier function, at least in part, via preserving the distribution and expression of TJ proteins in CECs.

BACKGROUND: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) has the highest prevalence among primary glomerular diseases worldwide, and crescent is a risk predictor of renal prognosis in IgAN. However, this is still controversial, and more research is needed to further confirm the importance of crescents in IgAN patients. So we aim to investigate the related factors and prognosis of IgAN with crescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 178 patients diagnosed with IgAN by renal biopsy were selected into a crescent group (C group, C1: 0% < crescent proportion < 25%, C2: crescent proportion ≥ 25%) and a non-crescent group (C0 group). The clinical and renal pathology indexes were compared, and the progression of proteinuria and renal function were followed up. RESULTS: Compared with the C0 group, the C group revealed lower level of serum albumin, hemoglobin, serum C3, and IgA complements, higher level of 24-hour urine protein quantity and urine erythrocyte count. Statistical differences in the degree of mesangial hyperplasia and C3 complement deposition were found between the two groups. Logistic regression analysis showed that hemoglobin and C3 complement deposition (+ and + +) were independent related factors of crescents in IgAN. Cumulative renal survival rate in C2 was significantly lower than in C1 (χ2 = 5.532, p = 0.019). IgAN patients with more crescents (≥ 25%) (adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) = 4.905, 95% CI: 1.135 - 21.208, p = 0.0033) and platelets (AHR = 1.016, CI: 1.006 - 1.023, p = 0.001) were more likely to progress to the end event in Cox regression analysis. CONCLUSION: IgAN patients with crescents may have severe clinical symptoms and poor prognosis. The crescents and serum platelet count are risk predictors of poor prognosis in IgAN.

AIM: To investigate the mechanism of pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate(PDTC)on transforming growth factor-beta 2(TGF-β2)-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)in human lens epithelial cells(LECs).METHODS: LECs were treated with various doses of PDTC chemicals following TGF-β2 caused EMT on these cells. Cell proliferation and lateral migration were discovered using the CCK-8 and cell scratch test. The markers of EMT, including E-cadherin, α-SMA and nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)signaling pathway-related expression, were tested by Western Blot as well as the changes in the expression of the apoptosis-related proteins BAX, BCL-2, Caspase-3, and Cyclin D1.RESULTS: The proliferation and migration viability of cells in the TGF-β2 treated group was increased compared to the group without TGF-β2, and the expression of α-SMA increased whereas the E-cadherin expression decreased. With the effect of TGF-β2, NF-κB p65 and phosphorylated NF-κB p65 expression increased, the concentration of TGF-β2 that had the greatest capacity for proliferation and migration was 10 ng/mL(P&#x003C;0.05). Mechanism study of PDTC-induced EMT reversal and apoptosis showed that cell viability and migratory capability were both significantly reduced after PDTC intervention; PDTC prevents IκB phosphorylation, thus inhibiting NF-κB nuclear translocation. Protein associated to the NF-κB signaling pathway, and protein expression of NF-κB/IκBα/p-IκBα/Iκκ-α/p-Iκκ-α was decreased(P&#x003C;0.05), PDTC increased the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein BAX/Caspase-3, expression of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein BCL-2 and the cell cycle protein Cyclin D1 was reduced. The expression of NF-κB/IκB mRNA was reduced, expression of the apoptosis-related mRNA BAX increased, while BCL-2 reduced.CONCLUSION: The EMT in LECs cells induced by TGF-β2 can be significantly reversed by PDTC, which may be related to the decreased expression of NF-κB p65/IκB/Iκκ-α and activation of apoptosis-related protein. PDTC can reverse EMT by inhibiting NF-κB signaling pathway and induce apoptosis of abnormally proliferated cells, which will provide new potential therapeutic agents for posterior capsular opacification(PCO)treatment.

Microbial production of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids (MIAs) provides a sustainable and eco-friendly means to obtain compounds with high pharmaceutical values. However, efficient biosynthesis of MIAs in heterologous microorganisms is hindered due to low supply of key precursors such as geraniol and its derivative 8-hydroxygeraniol catalyzed by geraniol 8-hydroxylase (G8H). In this study, we developed a facile evolution platform to screen strains with improved yield of geraniol by using the SCRaMbLE system embedded in the Sc2.0 synthetic yeast and confirmed the causal role of relevant genomic targets. Through genome mining, we identified several G8H enzymes that perform much better than the commonly used CrG8H for 8-hydroxygeraniol production in vivo. We further showed that the N-terminus of these G8H enzymes plays an important role in cellular activity by swapping experiments. Finally, the combination of the engineered chassis, optimized biosynthesis pathway, and utilization of G8H led to the final strain with more than 30-fold improvement in producing 8-hydroxygeraniol compared with the starting strain. Overall, this study will provide insights into the construction and optimization of yeast cells for efficient biosynthesis of 8-hydroxygeraniol and its derivatives.

OBJECTIVES: Influenza vaccination is an effective method for preventing influenza virus infection. Herein, we performed a meta-analysis to quantify global influenza vaccination rates (IVRs) and the factors influencing its uptake in the general population, individuals with chronic diseases, pregnant women, and healthcare workers. METHODS: Related articles were obtained from online databases and screened according to the inclusion criteria. The pooled IVRs were calculated using the random effects model. Subgroup analyses and multivariate meta-regression were performed to determine the factors associated with influenza vaccine uptake. RESULTS: We included 522 studies from 68 countries/regions. Most studies were conducted in the European region (247 studies), followed by the Western Pacific (135 studies) and American regions (100 studies). The IVRs with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in the general population were lower (24.96%, 23.45%-26.50%) than in individuals with chronic diseases (41.65%, 40.08%-43.23%), healthcare workers (36.57%, 33.74%-39.44%), and pregnant women (25.92%, 23.18%-28.75%). The IVRs in high-income countries/regions were significantly higher than that in middle-income countries/regions. A free national or regional vaccination policy, perception of influenza vaccine efficacy and disease severity, a recommendation from healthcare workers, and having a history of influenza vaccination were positive factors for vaccine uptake (P <0.01). CONCLUSION: Overall, global IVRs were low, especially in the general population. The studies on the IVRs, especially for priority populations, should be strengthened in Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asian, and African regions. Free vaccination policies and the dissemination of continuous awareness campaigns are effective measures to enhance vaccination uptake.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus is the leading global pathogen of diarrhea-associated mortality and poses a great threat to public health in all age groups. This study aimed to explore the global burden and 30-year change patterns of rotavirus infection-associated deaths. METHODS: Based on the Global Burden of Disease 2019 Study (GBD 2019), we analyzed the age-standardized death rate (ASDR) of rotavirus infection by sex, geographical region, and sociodemographic index (SDI) from 1990 to 2019. A Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the global trends in rotavirus infection over the 30 years, SaTScan software was used to detect the spatial and temporal aggregations, and a generalized linear model to explore the relationship between sociodemographic factors and death rates of rotavirus infection. RESULTS: Globally, rotavirus infection was the leading cause of diarrheal deaths, accounting for 19.11% of deaths from diarrhea in 2019. Rotavirus caused a higher death burden in African, Oceanian, and South Asian countries in the past three decades. The ASDR of rotavirus declined from 11.39 (95% uncertainty interval [95% UI] 5.46-19.48) per 100,000 people in 1990 to 3.41 (95% UI 1.60-6.01) per 100,000 people in 2019, with an average annual percentage change (AAPC) (- 4.07%, P < 0.05). However, a significant uptrend was found in high-income North America (AAPC = 1.79%, P < 0.05). The death rate was the highest among children under 5 years worldwide. However, the death rates of elderly individuals over 70 years were higher than those of children under 5 years in 2019 among high, high-middle, middle, and low-middle SDI regions. Current health expenditure, gross domestic product per capita, and the number of physicians per 1000 people were significantly negatively correlated with death rates of rotavirus. CONCLUSIONS: Although the global trends in the rotavirus burden have decreased substantially over the past three decades, the burden of rotavirus remained high in Africa, Oceania, and South Asia. Children under 5 years and elderly individuals over 70 years were the populations most at risk for rotavirus infection-associated deaths, especially elderly individuals over 70 years in relatively high SDI regions. More attention should be paid to these areas and populations, and effective public health policies should be implemented in the future.

Meteorological factors and the increase in extreme weather events are closely related to the incidence rate of infectious diarrhea. However, few studies have explored whether the impact of the same meteorological factors on the incidence rate of infectious diarrhea in different climate regions has changed and quantified these changes. In this study, the time series fixed-effect Poisson regression model guided by climate was used to quantify the relationships between the incidence rate of various types of infectious diarrhea and meteorological factors in different climate regions of China from 2004 to 2018, with a lag of 0-2 months. In addition, six social factors, including per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), population density, number of doctors per 1000 people, proportion of urbanized population, proportion of children aged 0-14 years old, and proportion of elderly over 65 years old, were included in the model for confounding control. Additionally, the intercept of each province in each model was analyzed by a meta-analysis. Four climate regions were considered in this study: tropical monsoon areas, subtropical monsoon areas, temperate areas and alpine plateau areas. The results indicate that the influence of meteorological factors and extreme weather in different climate regions on diverse infectious diarrhea types is distinct. In general, temperature was positively correlated with all infectious diarrhea cases (0.2 ≤ r ≤ 0.6, p < 0.05). After extreme rainfall, the incidence rate of dysentery in alpine plateau area in one month would be reduced by 18.7% (95% confidence interval (CI): -27.8--9.6%). Two months after the period of extreme sunshine duration happened, the incidence of dysentery in the alpine plateau area would increase by 21.9% (95% CI: 15.4-28.4%) in that month, and the incidence rate of typhoid and paratyphoid in the temperate region would increase by 17.2% (95% CI: 15.5-18.9%) in that month. The meta-analysis showed that there is no consistency between different provinces in the same climate region. Our study indicated that meteorological factors and extreme weather in different climate areas had different effects on various types of infectious diarrhea, particularly extreme rainfall and extreme sunshine duration, which will help the government develop disease-specific and location-specific interventions, especially after the occurrence of extreme weather.

Background: Neuroimaging studies have been widely used to investigate brain regions' alterations in musculoskeletal pain patients. However, inconsistent results have hindered our understanding of the central modulatory effects of acupuncture for musculoskeletal pain. The main objective of our investigation has been to obtain comprehensive evidence of acupuncture for musculoskeletal pain diseases. Methods: The PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP Database, China Biology Medicine disc Database, Clinical Trial Registration Platform, and Wanfang Database were searched for neuroimaging studies on musculoskeletal pain diseases published from inception up to November 2021. Then, the relevant literature was screened to extract the coordinates that meet the criteria. Finally, the coordinate-based meta-analysis was performed using the activation likelihood estimation algorithm. Results: A total of 15 neuroimaging studies with 183 foci of activation were included in this study. The ALE meta-analysis revealed activated clusters in multiple cortical and sub-cortical brain structures in response to acupuncture across studies, including the thalamus, insula, caudate, claustrum, and lentiform nucleus. Conclusions: The studies showed that acupuncture could modulate different brain regions, including the thalamus, insula, caudate, claustrum, and lentiform nucleus. The findings offer several insights into the potential mechanisms of acupuncture for musculoskeletal pain and provide a possible explanation for the observed clinical benefit of this therapy. Introduction: As an important pathogen causing diarrheal diseases, the burden and change in the death rate of norovirus-associated diseases (NADs) globally are still unknown. Methods: Based on global disease burden data from 1990 to 2019, we analyzed the age-standardized death rate (ASDR) of NADs by age, region, country, and Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) level. The discrete Poisson model was applied in the analysis of NADs' spatiotemporal aggregation, the Joinpoint regression model to analyze the trend of death burden of NADs over 30 years, and a generalized linear model to identify the risk factors for the death rate from NADs. Results: The ASDR of NADs significantly decreased by a factor of approximately 2.7 times, from 5.02 (95% CI: 1.1, 11.34) in 1990 to 1.86 (95% CI: 0.36, 4.16) in 2019 [average annual percent change (AAPC) = -3.43, 95% CI: -3.56, -3.29]. The death burden of NADs in 2019 was still highest in African regions despite a great decline in recent decades. However, the ASDR in high SDI countries presented an uptrend [0.12 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.26) in 1990 and 0.24 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.53) in 2019, AAPC = 2.52, 95% CI: 2.02-3.03], mainly observed in the elderly over 70 years old. Compared to children under 5 years old, the 2019 death rate of elderly individuals over 80 years old was much higher in high SDI countries. The generalized linear model showed that factors of the number of physicians (RR = 0.67), the proportions of children under 14 years old (RR = 1.21), elderly individuals over 65 years old (RR = 1.13), educational level (RR = 1.03) and urbanization proportion (RR = 1.01) influenced the ASDR of NADs. Conclusions: The death burden of NADs has remained high in developing regions over the last three decades and has increased among the elderly in countries with high SDI levels, even though the global trend in NAD-associated deaths has decreased significantly in the past three decades. More effective public health policies against NADs need to be implemented in high SDI regions and for the elderly.
