In this study, single crystals of (K1-xNax)NbO3 are grown by the self-flux crystal growth method and their phase transitions are studied using a combination of Raman scattering and impedance spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction shows that single crystals have a perovskite structure with monoclinic symmetry. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that single crystals have monoclinic symmetry at room temperature with space group P1211. Electron probe microanalysis shows that single crystals are Na-rich and A-site deficient. Temperature-controlled Raman scattering shows that low temperature monoclinic-monoclinic, monoclinic-tetragonal and tetragonal-cubic phase transitions take place at -20 °C, 220 °C and 440 °C. Dielectric property measurements show that single crystals behave as a normal ferroelectric material. Relative or inverse relative permittivity peaks at ~-10 °C, ~230 °C and ~450 °C with hysteresis correspond to the low temperature monoclinic-monoclinic, monoclinic-tetragonal and tetragonal-cubic phase transitions, respectively, consistent with the Raman scattering results. A conduction mechanism with activation energies of about 0.5-0.7 eV was found in the paraelectric phase. Single crystals show polarization-electric field hysteresis loops of a lossy normal ferroelectric. The combination of Raman scattering and impedance spectroscopy is effective in determining the phase transition temperatures of (K1-xNax)NbO3.
RESUMO
The search for newer histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors has attracted a great deal of interest of medicinal chemists worldwide, especially after the first HDAC inhibitor (Zolinza(®), widely known as SAHA or Suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid) was approved by the FDA for the treatment of Tcell lymphoma in 2006. As a continuity of our ongoing research in this area, we designed and synthesized a series of 5-aryl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-based hydroxamic acids as analogues of SAHA and evaluated their biological activities. Most of the compounds in this series, e.g. compounds with 5-aryl moiety being 2- furfuryl (5a), 5-bromofuran-2-yl (5b), 5-methylfuran-2-yl (5c), thiophen-2-yl (5d), 5-methylthiophen-2-yl (5f) and pyridyl (5g-i), were found to have potent anticancer cytotoxicity with IC50 values of generally 5- to 10-fold lower than that of SAHA in 4 human cancer cell lines assayed. Those compounds with potent cytotoxicity were also found to have strong HDAC inhibition effects. Docking studies revealed that compounds 5a and 5d displayed high affinities towards HDAC2 and 8.

A simple zero-velocity method to determine the particle magnetic susceptibility by measuring the magnetophoretic velocity was proposed. The principle is that the magnetophoretic velocity of a particle in a liquid medium must be zero when the magnetic susceptibilities of the medium and the particle are equal, or the gravity force and the magnetophoretic force are balanced. By changing the medium magnetic susceptibility and measuring the magnetophoretic velocity of a particle, the particle magnetic susceptibility was determined from the medium magnetic susceptibility under the zero-velocity condition. The feasibility of the method was demonstrated for polystyrene particles using a Dy(III) solution in the horizontal migration mode and different organic solvents in the vertical migration mode.
RESUMO
This paper describes progress on formulating a national asbestos profile for the country of Vietnam. The Center of Asbestos Resource, Vietnam, formulated a National Profile on Asbestos-related Occupational Health, with due reference to the International Labor Organization/World Health Organization National Asbestos Profile. The Center of Asbestos Resource was established by the Vietnamese Health Environment Management Agency and the National Institute of Labor Protection, with the support of the Australian Agency for International Development, as a coordinating point for asbestos-related issues in Vietnam. Under the National Profile on Asbestos-related Occupational Health framework, the Center of Asbestos Resource succeeded in compiling relevant information for 15 of the 18 designated items outlined in the International Labor Organization/World Health Organization National Asbestos Profile, some overlaps of the information items notwithstanding. Today, Vietnam continues to import and use an average of more than 60,000 metric tons of raw asbestos per year. Information on asbestos-related diseases is limited, but the country has begun to diagnose mesothelioma cases, with the technical cooperation of Japan. As it stands, the National Profile on Asbestos-related Occupational Health needs further work and updating. However, we envisage that the National Profile on Asbestos-related Occupational Health will ultimately facilitate the smooth transition to an asbestos-free Vietnam.

Monitoring of benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTEX) was conducted along with traffic counts at 17 roadside sites in urban areas of HoChiMinh. Toluene was the most abundant substance, followed by p,m-xylenes, benzene, o-xylene and ethylbenzene. The maximum observed hour-average benzene concentration was 254 microg/m3. Motorcycles contributed to 91% of the traffic fleet. High correlations among BTEX species, between BTEX concentrations and the volume of on-road motorcycles, and between inter-species ratios in air and in gasoline indicate the motorcycle-exhaust origin of BTEX species. Daily concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p,m-xylenes and o-xylene were 56, 121, 21, 64 and 23 microg/m3, respectively, p,m-xylenes possess the highest ozone formation potential among the BTEX family.

Personal exposure to benzene of selected population groups, and impacts of traffic on commuters in Ho Chi Minh City were investigated. The study was carried out in June, July and November 2010. The preliminary data showed that on average, personal exposure to benzene for non-occupational people in Ho Chi Minh is ~18 µg/m(3) and most of the exposure is due to commuting. Benzene exposure during travelling by bus, taxi and motorcycle is, respectively, 22-30, 22-39 and 185-240 µg/m(3). Motorcycle-taxi drivers, petrol filling employees and street vendors suffer high daily exposures at 116, 52, 32 µg/m(3), respectively. Further measurements are needed for a better risk assessment and finding effective measures to reduce exposure.

A new home-made diffusive bag-type passive sampler called Lanwatsu was developed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene monitoring in roadside air. The passive samplers were outdoor validated and deployed together with two commercial passive samplers, Ultra I SKC Inc. and Radiello, for daily roadside air monitoring in East Asian cities including HoChiMinh, Hanoi, Cantho, Danang, Vungtau, Hue (Vietnam), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Kyoto, Osaka (Japan), Nanjing (China) and Singapore in 2011. High daily benzene concentrations of 87, 52, 32, 23, 13, 12 and 48 µg/m³ were observed in HoChiMinh, Hanoi, Cantho, Danang, Hue, Vung Tau (Vietnam), and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), respectively. Kyoto and Osaka (Japan) were clean with daily benzene concentrations below 2.3 µg/m³. The daily benzene concentrations in Nanjing (China) and Singapore were 5.6 and 6.9 µg/m³, respectively. The three passive samplers were equivalent. Passive sampling by the Lanwatsu passive sampler is acceptable for daily outdoor benzene monitoring.

We analyzed atmospheric particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for 19 months. The average concentrations of total PAHs at dry and rainy seasons were 4.28 +/- 2.83 and 15.71 +/- 8.21 ng m(-3), respectively. The use of motorcycles without catalytic converters, estimated to be main emission sources of PAHs, would be higher during the dry season. PAH concentrations show a negative correlation with sunshine duration (r = -0.51). Furthermore, the ratio of average PAH concentration in the dry season to that in the rainy season shows a positive correlation with photolytic half-life (r = 0.94). Thus, seasonal changes in PAH concentrations are attributable to their photolytic degradation.

A passive sampling method was applied to measure the concentrations of air pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ammonia, hydrogen chloride, and nitric, formic and acetic acids, in the ambient air at four test sites in the southern region of Vietnam. The monthly averages and the average concentrations of air pollutants during the period from July 2001 to September 2002 are reported here. The concentrations of air pollutants varied widely, depending on the test sites and the sampling periods. The average concentrations of sulfur dioxide in the air during the period from July 2001 to September 2002 at the four test sites were 3.3-16.9 ppb, and those of nitrogen dioxide were 5.4-12.8 ppb. The concentrations of nitrogen monoxide and hydrogen chloride were very low at all of the test sites. The observed concentrations of all of the above-mentioned pollutants were lower than those of the Vietnamese standards of air pollutants.
