RESUMO

Municipal sledge water is a combination of residential wastewater, industrial effluent, and precipitation water. The water quality parameters analyses results demonstrated that most of the parameters (pH: 5.6 ± 0.3, Turbidity: 102.31 ± 2.8 mg L-1, TH: 946.38 ± 3.7 mg L-1, BOD: 295.63 ± 5.4 mg L-1, COD: 482.41 ± 4.9 mg L-1, Ca: 278.74 ± 1.8 mg L-1, SO42-: 559.64 ± 11.4 mg L-1, Cd: 18.56 ± 1.37 mg L-1, Cr: 31.25 ± 1.49 mg L-1, Pb: 21.45 ± 1.12 mg L-1, and Zn: 48.65 ± 1.56 mg L-1) were considerably increased in quantities with slightly acidic in condition. The in-vitro phycoremediation study was carried out for two weeks with pre-identified Scenedesmus sp. Biomass in different groups of treatments (A, B, C, and D). Interestingly, most of the physicochemical parameters were significantly reduced in group C (4 × 103 cells mL-1) treated municipal sludge water in a shorter treatment period than in the other treatment groups. The phycoremediation percentage of group C were found as pH: 32.85%, EC: 52.81%, TDS: 31.32%, TH: 25.58%, BOD: 34.02%, COD: 26.47%, Ni: 58.94%, Ca: 44.75%, K: 42.74%, Mg: 39.52%, Na: 36.55%, Fe: 68%, Cl: 37.03%, SO42-: 16.77%, PO43-: 43.15%, F: 55.55%, Cd:44.88%, Cr:37.21%, Pb:43.8%, and Zn:33.17%. These findings suggest that increased biomass from Scenedesmus sp. can be used to significantly remediate municipal sludge water and that the obtained biomass and treated sludge can be used as feedstock's for bio fuel as well as bio fertilizer, respectively.

RESUMO

This investigation was performed to evaluate the metal pollution and possible phytoremediation on bauxite mine surrounding farmland soil. The quality analysis results revealed that, the soil has been polluted with metals such as Al (13.25 ± 0.54 mg kg-1), Pb (336.18 ± 7.17 mg kg-1), Zn (382.18 ± 3.05 mg kg-1), and Cd (11.32 ± 0.28 mg kg-1) and possess poor essential element content. The test bacterium Pseudomonas aeroginosa showed considerable metal tolerance up to 100 mg kg-1 concentration of metals such as Al, Pb, Zn, and Cd. Besides that, it also possesses essential plant growth promoting traits such as sederophore, IAA, nitrogen fixation, and phosphate solubilization. The test bacterium P. aeroginosa demonstrated optimistic influence on the growth and phytoremediation ability of Jatropha gossypifolia on metal-polluted soil under greenhouse experiment with different treatment groups (I-V). Group I (J. gossypifolia seeds coated with P. aeroginosa) showed outstanding phytoremediation potential on metal polluted soil than other treatment groups. The group I reduced considerable quantity of metals (Al 42.79%, Pb 36.57%, Zn 47.06%, and Cd 39.57%) from the treated soil. It was significantly higher than the remediation potential of other treatment groups (II-V). These findings suggest that P. aeroginosa's metal tolerant and PGP characters can effectively influence the growth and phytoremediation potential of J. gossypifolia on metal polluted soil.

RESUMO

The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (SIPCOT) Lake is never dry; it is always full of water and was recently used as a waste reservoir by the native peoples and industrialists. Thus, this investigation was performed to assess the quality of the lake water and evaluate the possible biosorption potential of Aspergillus flavus on this lake water sample through batch model biosorption study. The water quality parameters analyses revealed that the lake water has been polluted with number of contaminates which including organic and inorganic. The most of the parameters such as pH (9.5 ± 0.7), turbidity (38 ± 1.1 NT unit), TDS (2350.12 ± 31.24 mg L-1), BOD (40.21 ± 3.27 mg L-1), and COD (278.61 ± 11.84 mg L-1), Ca (212.85 ± 9.64 mg L-1), Fe (3.1 ± 0.8 mg L-1), NH3 (15.62 ± 0.5 mg L-1), NO3-(5.84 ± 0.14 mg L-1), Cl- (1257.85 ± 4.6 mg L-1),Cd (15.64 ± 0.29 mg L-1), Cr (6.86 ± 0.34 mg L-1), Pb (25.61 ± 3.41 mg L-1), and Hg (1.8 ± 0.024 mg L-1) content of water sample were beyond the acceptable limits. Fortunately, the A. flavus dead biomass showed considerable biosorption potential (Cd: 27.5 ± 1.1%, Cr: 13.48 ± 1.2%, Pb: 21.27 ± 1.5%, and Hg: 6.49 ± 0.86% in 180 min of contact time) than viable form on polluted lake water. Since, reduced the quantities of most of the parameters which beyond the permissible limit and also increased remarkable percentage of DO in the water sample in a short period of contact time. These findings suggest that A. flavus dead biomass can be used for bioremediation of polluted water in a sustainable manner.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare optical performance, visual performance, and patient-perceived quality of vision with: (1) spectacles determined using subjective refraction and (2) spectacles determined using an objective optimisation method based on wavefront aberration data for eyes with keratoconus. METHODS: Thirty-seven eyes (20 subjects) with keratoconus underwent both subjective refraction and uncorrected wavefront aberration measurement. Wavefront aberration data were used to objectively identify a sphero-cylindrical refraction that optimised the visual image quality metric visual Strehl ratio (VSX). The two refractions were assembled in trial frames and worn by the subject in a random order. High-contrast visual acuity (VA), letter contrast sensitivity (CS), and the patient's short-term subjective preference were recorded for each prescription. RESULTS: Median magnitude of the dioptric difference (a measure of similarity between the subjective and objective refractions) was 2.77 D (range = 0.21-20.44 D, first quartile = 1.02 D, third quartile = 4.36 D). Sixty-eight per cent of eyes had better VA with the objective refraction and 32% of eyes gained more than one line of VA. Monocularly, objective refraction was preferred 68% of the time when looking at a distant acuity chart and 76% of the time when viewing a real-world dynamic scene. CONCLUSIONS: Objective refraction based on visual image quality derived from wavefront aberration data can be valuable in the determination of monocular spectacle refractions for individuals with keratoconus.

RESUMO

SIGNIFICANCE: Wavefront-guided scleral lenses (WGSLs) reduce visually debilitating residual higher-order aberrations. Although reduced higher-order aberrations lead to improvement in monocular high-contrast visual acuity (VA), the success of the lenses in everyday life depends on additional factors such as retinal contrast, binocular balance, and stereoacuity. PURPOSE: This report describes a case where WGSLs provided improved monocular vision compared with scleral lenses (SLs) but reduced binocularity and stereoacuity. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old woman with moderate keratoconus right eye (OD) and severe left eye (OS) was fitted with SLs and WGSLs. Visual acuity with best SLs was 20/20 -2 OD and 20/25 -2 OS. Residual higher-order root-mean-square (HORMS) wavefront error (6 mm pupil) was 0.56 µm OD and 1.38 µm OS. Visual acuity with WGSLs was 20/16 -2 OD and 20/25 +2 OS, and residual HORMS was 0.41 µm OD and 0.98 µm OS. Monocularly, WGSLs were reported to provide better VA. However, binocularly, the patient reported an "imbalanced feeling" and preferred the SLs over WGSLs. Binocular VA at distance was 20/25 with SLs and 20/25 -2 with WGSL. To investigate, the Worth Four-Dot test was performed, and the outcomes reported fusion with SLs but suppression OS at distance with WGSLs. Stereoacuity was 160 arc seconds at near and 120 arc seconds at distance with SLs and 400 arc seconds at near and >1200 arc seconds at distance with WGSLs. Dichoptic contrast balancing showed a balance point of 0.48 with SLs and 0.17 with WGSLs, indicating a strong preference toward OD. Simulation of the patient's retinal image revealed a greater difference in image contrast between the two eyes with WGSLs. CONCLUSIONS: Wavefront-guided scleral lenses reduced HORMS and improved VA compared with SLs. However, in this case, it inadvertently caused binocular imbalance. As WGSLs become more widely available, future work should include methods to optimize binocular balance to maximize overall patient satisfaction.

RESUMO

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum causes white mold, leading to substantial losses on a wide variety of hosts around the world. Many genes encoding effector proteins play important roles in the pathogenesis of S. sclerotiorum. Therefore, establishment of a transformation system for the exploration of gene function is necessarily significant. Here, we introduce a modified protocol to acquire protoplasts for transformation and generate knockout strains, which completements the transformation system of S. sclerotiorum.

RESUMO

Current health and environmental concerns about the abundance and drawbacks of municipal wastewater as well as industrial effluent have prompted the development of novel and innovative treatment processes. A global shortage of clean water poses significant challenges to the survival of all life forms. For the removal of both biodegradable and non-biodegradable harmful wastes/pollutants from water, sophisticated wastewater treatment technologies are required. Polymer membrane technology is critical to overcoming this major challenge. Polymer matrix-based nanocomposite membranes are among the most popular in polymer membrane technology in terms of convenience. These membranes and their major components are environmentally friendly, energy efficient, cost effective, operationally versatile, and feasible. This review provides an overview of the drawbacks as well as promising developments in polymer membrane and nanocomposite membranes for environmental remediation, with a focus on wastewater treatment. Additionally, the advantages of nanocomposite membranes such as stability, antimicrobial properties, and adsorption processes have been discussed. The goal of this review was to summarize the remediation of harmful pollutants from water and wastewater/effluent using polymer matrix-based nanocomposite membrane technology, and to highlight its shortcomings and future prospects.

RESUMO

Immensely expanding world population and narrowing arable land for agriculture is a mighty concern faced by the planet at present. One of the major reasons for decline in arable lands is the increased soil salinity, making it unfavourable for crop cultivation. Utilisation of these saline land for agriculture is possible with suitable invention for improving the soil quality. Biofertizers manufactured out of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria is one such innovation. In the present study, Bacillus licheniformis NJ04 strain was isolated and studied for its halotolerance and other effective plant growth promoting traits. The NJ04 strain was able to tolerate salt up to 10% and highlighted remarkable antifungal activity against common fungal phytopathogens. The preliminary seed germination test in Solanum lycopersicum seeds revealed a significant increase in root length (16.29 ± 0.91 cm) and shoot length (9.66 ± 0.11 cm) of treated plants as compared with the control plants and thereby shows its possible use as a green bioinoculant in agriculture and an ideal candidate to compete with salt stress.

RESUMO

Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City is the most important urban region of Vietnam, Southeast Asia. In recent times, the quantity of electronic waste (e-waste) has been growing by several thousand tonnes every year. In this research, some of the existing and developing technologies being employed for the recycling of e-waste have been reviewed. Accordingly, the paper has been divided into three sections namely, e-waste treatment technologies in Ho Chi Minh City, the effect of heavy metals on human health and the extraction of metals from e-waste using pyrolysis, hydrometallurgy, bioleaching, mechanical, and air classifier methods, respectively. The extraction of precious metals and heavy metals such as Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, Cu, Se, and Zn from e-waste can be hazardous to human health. For example, lead causes hazards to the central and peripheral nervous systems, blood system and kidneys; copper causes liver damage; chronic exposure to cadmium ends up causing lung cancer and kidney damage, and mercury can cause brain damage. Thus, this study examines the key findings of many research and review articles published in the field of e-waste management and the health impacts of metal pollution.

RESUMO

The majority of industrial products are identified as persistent organic pollutants after their date of expiry, which is highly harmful to the ecosystem and human health and also going to be banned around the world. Paint latex is one of those pollutants which become a hazardous waste material after stocking for a long time. Approximately 20% of color paints do not get used for their desired purpose after getting sold out and end up in a landfill. Now a day's construction industry is inclining towards the various types of geo-polymer concrete since it does not require cement. But that geo-polymer concrete has too much less workability as compared to the same grade of control cement concrete. To achieve the desired workability as well as other properties of geo-polymer concrete by using waste paint latex as performance improving admixture is the main motive of the present research. Fourteen different mixes of control and calcined clay-based geo-polymer concrete have been prepared by adding up to 3% waste paint latex of weight of cementitious materials and a detailed study has been done on various properties such as workability, rheology, shrinkage, strength and its microstructure. The presence of nanoparticles of TiO2 in waste paint latex has helped to produce extra hydration products, by which the mechanical properties, durability and microstructure of both traditional and geo-polymer concrete have increased. It has been concluded that a higher dose of waste paint latex improves the workability but the strength and durability properties of traditional and geo-polymer concrete improve up to 2-2.5% of waste paint latex replaced to water.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to find the most cadmium (Cd2+) tolerant and remediated bacteria isolate from KNO3 processing unit contaminated soil. One isolate out of 19 isolates possessed excellent Cd2+ tolerance than others, which was recognized as Enterobacter hormaechei SFC3 through molecular characterization (16S rRNA sequencing). The identified E. hormaechei SFC3 contained 55% and 45% of GC and AT content, respectively. The wild and acridine orange mutated E. hormaechei SFC3 exhibited excellent resistance to Cd2+ up to the concentration of 1500 µg mL-1. Furthermore, the wild E. hormaechei SFC3 and mutated E. hormaechei SFC3 showed 82.47% and 90.21% of Cd2+ remediation on 6th days of treatment respectively. Similarly, the Cd2+ tolerant wild and mutated E. hormaechei SFC3 showed considerable resistance to all the tested antibiotics. The findings indicate that E. hormaechei SFC3 isolated from KNO3 processing unit contaminated soil is a promising candidate for microbial remediation of Cd2+ contamination.

RESUMO

Non-enzymatic glycation of biomolecules results in advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are responsible for secondary complications in diabetes. Inhibiting methyl glyoxal (MGO) induced advanced glycation end product (AGE) formation is the only way to alleviate diabetic complications. This study aimed to look into the abilities of herbal extract Kigelia africana and K. africana synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) to inhibit the emergence of MG-derived AGEs. The study intended to determine antioxidant and AGE inhibition of the plant extract and ZnONPs. ZnONPs were tested for the efficiency of anti-diabetic activity in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wister rats. We discovered that the MGO-trapping effects on the prevention of AGE production were mediated by the downregulation of the amplification of MGO-trapping impacts on the hypoglycemic and antihyperlipidemic mechanisms of ZnONPs. According to histological findings, the treatment with ZnONPs also successfully lowers inflammation in the hepatic and renal tissues. Overall, future mechanistic research could establish ZnONPs potential anti-diabetic properties.

RESUMO

The current study investigated the plant growth promoting (PGP) characteristics of multi-metal-tolerant Bacillus cereus and their positive effect on the physiology, biomolecule substance, and phytoremediation ability of Chrysopogon zizanioides in metal-contaminated soil. The test soil sample was detrimentally contaminated by metals including Cd (31 mg kg-1), Zn (7696 mg kg-1), Pb (326 mg kg-1), Mn (2519 mg kg-1) and Cr (302 mg kg-1) that exceeded Indian standards. The multi-metal-tolerant B. cereus seemed to have superb PGP activities including fabrication of hydrogen cyanide, siderophore, Indole Acetic Acid, N2 fixation, as well as P solubilisation. Such multi-metal-tolerant B. cereus attributes can dramatically reduce or decontaminate metals in contaminated soils, and their PGP attributes significantly improve plant growth in contaminated soils. Hence, without (study I) and with (study II) the blending of B. cereus, this strain vastly enhances the growth and phytoremediation potency of C. zizanioides on metal contaminated soil. The results revealed that the physiological data, biomolecule components, and phytoremediation efficiency of C. zizanioides (Cr: 7.74, Cd: 12.15, Zn: 16.72, Pb: 11.47, and Mn: 14.52 mg g-1) seem to have been greatly effective in study II due to the metal solubilizing and PGP characteristics of B. cereus. This is a one-of-a-kind report on the effect of B. cereus's multi-metal tolerance and PGP characteristics on the development and phytoextraction effectiveness of C. zizanioides in metal-polluted soil.

RESUMO

This research was performed to evaluate the nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs) fabricating potential of orange fruit waste (OFW) aqueous extract. Moreover characterize the synthesized OFW-NiONPs through standard techniques such as UV-vis. spectrophotometer, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analyses. Furthermore, the antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of OFW-NiONPs were studied against most common microbial pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Aspergillus niger) and free radicals (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), H2O2, OH, and FRAP). A sharp absorbance peak was obtained at 324 nm under UV-vis spectrum analysis that confirmed that the synthesis of OFW-NiONPs and it has been capped and stabilized by numbers of active functional groups studied through FTIR analysis. SEM and DLS analyses revealed that the cubic and triangle shaped OFW-NiONPs with the size intensity distribution was ranging from 21 nm to 130 nm. Interestingly, the OFW-NiONPs showed remarkable antimicrobial activity against the common microbial pathogens in the order of E. coli > A. niger > K. pneumoniae > B. subtilis > S. aureus at increased concentration of 200 µg mL-1. Similarly, the synthesized OFW-NiONPs also possess significant free radicals scavenging activity against DPPH, OH, and FRAP. These results conclude that this OFW-NiONPs can be considered for some biomedical applications after the investigations of some in-vivo research.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether racial disparities in access to pediatric mental health care were affected during the COVID-19 telemedicine transition at both The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Boston Children's Hospital (BCH). METHOD: Electronic health records were queried for all unique outpatient visits from a pre-pandemic period in 2019 and a within-pandemic period in 2020. Changes in the proportion of patients were compared based on insurance status, clinic location, and racial identification. Hypotheses were tested via logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: At CHOP, from 2019 to 2020, the proportion of racially minoritized patients significantly declined within a 1-month period from 62% to 51%, whereas the proportion of White-identifying patients increased from 38% to 49% (ß = 0.47; z = 3.60; p =.0003), after controlling for insurance status and clinic location. At BCH, the proportion of racially minoritized patients significantly declined within a longer 6-month period between 2019 and 2020, from 62% to 59%, whereas the proportion of White-identifying patients increased from 38% to 41% (ß = 0.13; z = 2.8; p = .006), after controlling for insurance status. CONCLUSION: At CHOP and BCH, the COVID-19 telemedicine transition exacerbated pre-existing racial disparities in pediatric mental health services. Our findings suggest that racially minoritized patients receiving services in urban areas may be particularly at risk for losing access when telemedicine is implemented. Although there are limitations to this racial dichotomization, examining differences between White and racially minoritized patients can highlight ways in which White-identifying individuals have disproportionately received enhanced access to healthcare resources.

RESUMO

The main focus of the study was to witness the effects of chicken waste-based biodiesel blends along with constant hydrogen injection in a modified diesel engine. Furthermore, the nanoparticle multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) effects on the engine efficiency were also examined. A series of tests was conducted in the single cylinder, water cooled engine fuelled with diesel, CB100N, CB10N, CB30N, and CB50N. Throughout the entire run, constant hydrogen injection of 5 LPM has been maintained. The parameters such as brake thermal efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption, heat release rate and the emissions of different pollutants were determined for a variety of engine speeds. ASTM standards were applied to measure the viscosity, density and calorific value. From the reported findings, it was clear that the addition of the chicken waste biodiesel could be a sustainable substitute for the existing fossil fuels. Although the emission of the pollutants was dropped significantly, there was a massive drop in the BTE values. To compensate such shortage of power, the biodiesel was dispersed with MWCNT at the concentration of 80 ppm. Compared to the regular biodiesel, MWCNT inclusion increased the BTE by 14%. Further, the consumption of the fuel was also reduced marginally. Considering the pollutants, the catalytic activity of the MWCNT reduced the emissions of CO, NOx, and HC at various engine speeds. Besides, 10% reduction in NOx had been reported at lower engine speeds and was reduced to 8% at higher speed regimes. Compiling all together, increasing the concentration of the biodiesel blends obviously reduced the performance values and however, there was a great advantage in terms of the emission magnitudes irrespective of the engine operating conditions.

RESUMO

The current finding reports on the development of highly ordered closely packed TiO2 nanotube arrays on Ti substrate via two-step anodization process. The nanotubes developed by second anodization step (TNT2) were encapsulated with Pt nanoflakes using electro-deposition followed by hydrothermal treatment process. The FE-SEM, FTIR, XRD and contact angle measurement, respectively were done to find out the morphological, functional group, phase structural and wettability of the samples. The tube diameter and length were found to be 110-120 and 50-100 nm and 437 and 682, respectively for first (TNT1) and second anodization. The structural order of the TNT has enhanced in the second anodization process. Chronoamperometric results showed that the Pt-TNT2 exhibited enhanced and steady state electro-catalytic activity than Pt-TNT1. Pt-TNT2 nanoflake composite showed near SHP behaviour than the TNT without Pt. The food processing machinery developed using near SHP Pt-TNT2 could be cleaned easily due to its high non-wettability. Hence, Pt-TNT2 can be used for making food processing equipment.

RESUMO

In currently, biosynthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are most widely used numerous in biological applications such as biosensor, energy, medicine, agriculture, environmental and industrial wastewater treatment. The hierarchical CuO NPs was synthesized via green chemistry method by using of Abutilon indicum (A. indicum) leaf extract, its nontoxic, facile and low-cost approaches. Biogenic synthesized CuO NPs was characterized by using a UV-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Field mission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis. The synthesized CuO NPs was performed antibacterial activity against human pathogenic organisms of both Gram negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi) and Gram positive (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria by using agar well diffusion method. Biological synthesized CuO NPs was showed potential bactericidal activity against Gram positive bacteria of B. subtilis than compared to Gram negative bacteria of E. coli. The cytotoxic effect of A. indicum mediated synthesized CuO NPs was evaluated against to human lung A549 and breast MDA-MB-231cancer cell lines by determined using of MTT assay. In furthermore, photocatalytic dye degradation was performed that synthesized CuO NPs have effectively removed 78% of malachite green dye molecule. Our investigation results suggested that the green synthesized CuO NPs potential biological activity of antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacterial, anticancer activity was effectively against MDA-MB-231cancer cell line and good dye degradation was exhibited in malachite green. The A. indicum aqueous leaf extract mediated synthesized CuO NPs has strongly suggested promising nano-biomaterials for fabrication of biomedical applications.

RESUMO

This study deals with the synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAPnps) mediated by Acacia falcata leaf extract. Aggregates of needle-shaped crystalline nanostructures were confirmed by FE-SEM and TEM analysis. Well-defined rings in the SAED patterns corroborated the polycrystalline nature of the HAPnps. Individual elements present in the HAPnps were attested by the specific signals for Ca, P, and O in the EDS and XPS analyses. The distinct peaks observed in the XRD spectrum matched well with the HAP hexagonal patterns with a mean crystallite size of 55.04 nm. The FTIR study unveiled the coating of the nanoparticles with the biomolecules from Acacia falcata leaves. The suspension HAPnps exhibited polydispersity (0.446) and remarkable stability (zeta potential: - 31.9 mV) as evident from DLS studies. The pore diameter was 25.7 nm as obtained from BET analysis, suggesting their mesoporous nature. The HAPnps showed the cytotoxic effect on A549 lung and MDA-MB231 breast carcinoma cell lines, with an IC50 value of 55 µg/mL. The distortion of the cell membrane and cell morphology, along with the chromatin condensation and cell necrosis on treatment with HAPnps were detected under fluorescence microscopy post acridine orange/ethidium bromide dye staining. This study reports the anti-cancerous potential of non-drug-loaded plant-mediated HAPnps. Therefore, the HAPnps obtained in this investigation could play a vital role in the biomedical field of cancer therapy.
