RESUMO

The effects of movement on the recognition of famous faces shown in difficult conditions were investigated. Images were presented as negatives, upside down (inverted), and thresholded. Results indicate that, under all these conditions, moving faces were recognized significantly better than static ones. One possible explanation of this effect could be that a moving sequence contains more static information about the different views and expressions of the face than does a single static image. However, even when the amount of static information was equated (Experiments 3 and 4), there was still an advantage for moving sequences that contained their original dynamic properties. The results suggest that the dynamics of the motion provide additional information, helping to access an established familiar face representation. Both the theoretical and the practical implications for these findings are discussed.

RESUMO

A comparison of the tick resistance of indigenous Mashona and crossbred Afrikander x Sussex oxen following natural tick infestation indicated that significantly more African blue ticks Boophilus decoloratus were found on the crossbred than the indigenous cattle (P < 0.05). The two groups of cattle were exposed to Babesia bigemina and Theileria taurotragi as indicated by high antibody titres on the indirect fluorescent antibody test, but no antibodies could be demonstrated to Anaplasma marginale and T. parva bovis despite the presence of their vectors. Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Hyalomma truncatum and H. marginatum rufipes showed a seasonal distribution. The implications of the findings in terms of strategic tick control are discussed.

RESUMO

A transport and enrichment medium was developed for Campylobacter fetus. From inocula of between 10 and 35 organisms the medium was able to support the multiplication of 19 of 21 strains of C. fetus if the medium was incubated immediately after inoculation; when incubation was delayed for 3 days after inoculation, only seven of the 21 strains multiplied. From inocula of 100-350 organisms all 21 strains multiplied following immediate incubation, and 20 of 21 when incubation was delayed for 3 days. From inocula of about 10(4) organisms all strains multiplied following immediate or delayed incubation. The medium restricted the growth of Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

RESUMO

The use of a transport and enrichment medium (TEM) in the diagnosis of Campylobacter fetus infections in bulls is described. The medium significantly improved the diagnosis rate in samples which, because of the length of time between collection and receipt at the laboratory, were unsuitable for processing by direct culture. The TEM was able to support the viability, and subsequent multiplication, of C. fetus in some samples for up to 7 days before the TEM was incubated. The submission of paired samples of TEM, one containing unfiltered preputial washing (PW) and the other containing PW filtered through a 0.60 micron cellulose acetate filter, significantly increased the accuracy of diagnosis.

RESUMO

Concentrations of cytosolic androgen receptor, DNA and soluble protein, contents of DHT, and in-vivo uptake of 3H-DHT were measured in rat ventral prostates at 5-day intervals during sexual development. Regarding prostate weight two phases of growth were noted being separated by a period of stagnation from Day 40 to 45. Cytosolic androgen receptor, particle-bound DHT, and uptake of 3H-DHT into the 100,000-g sediment showed a clear pattern: a maximum in the prepubertal animal at age Day 20, a minimum at age Day 30 (4 days after the early pubertal rise of LH, testosterone, and DHT) followed by a second maximum on Day 55 (2 days before the beginning of fertility), and a second minimum in the young mature animal on Day 70. An intermediate peak seen at age Day 37 was not significant. Neither the time-dependent profile of the cytosolic androgen receptor nor the contents and in vivo uptake of DHT were correlated to concentrations of circulating gonadotrophins, growth hormone, and sex-steroids measured during puberty in the same strain of animals. Therefore, the regulating mechanism remains unclear.

RESUMO

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect antibodies to Campylobacter fetus subspecies venerealis in bovine vaginal mucus. The results of testing 168 samples from experimentally infected, field cases and control cows showed that the ELISA was more sensitive than the vaginal mucus agglutination test and also detected antibodies in earlier stages of infection.

RESUMO

Young Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were infected orally with a human strain of Campylobacter jejuni. The disease induced was mild, with inappetence and diarrhoea of short duration, but prolonged intermittent excretion of the bacteria in the faeces occurred. Bacteraemia was generally present for 2--3 days and later the organisms localized in the liver and gall bladder. Recovered animals, when challenged with the same strain, showed no clinical symptoms, no bacteraemia, and excreted the organisms in the faeces for only 3 days.

RESUMO

Five quarters of the udders of two lactating cows were infected by intramammary inoculation with Campylobacter coli/jejuni in doses ranging from 2.6 colony-forming units (c.f.u.) to 3.8 X 10(9) c.f.u. The infected quarters developed clinical mastitis and the campylobacters were reisolated in large numbers from the milk. The milk from the uninfected quarters, and blood and faeces remained free of the organisms. The campylobacters could only be isolated by incubation of culture plates in a microaerobic atmosphere. The results showed that C. coli/jejuni can cause mastitis in the cow and that the bovine udder is a potential source of C. coli/jejuni in raw milk.
