RESUMO

PIP: "Since 1 January 1998 non-married couples of the same or opposite sex [in the Netherlands have been] allowed to have their partnership officially registered. In the first half of 1998 about 1.8 thousand couples of the same sex and 0.8 thousand of opposite sex were registered. These numbers are somewhat higher than the [legislators] expected at the time of introduction of this legal provision. The average age of persons who registered their partnership is considerably higher than that of persons who married. The average age difference between two male partners is almost twice as large as between two marrying persons." (EXCERPT)^ieng

RESUMO

"A decade ago, Willis' micro-economic model of fertility was tested by making use of data obtained from the 1982 Netherlands Fertility Survey of Statistics Netherlands.... The effect of the woman's education on the expected ultimate number of children was negative, but became positive again with the partner's increasing level of education. A similar test on the basis of 1993 Fertility and Family Survey data indicates that the effect of the partner's education and the combined effect of the levels of education have disappeared. As regards education, only the woman's level has effect on childbearing." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

RESUMO

"Dutch society witnesses a continuous growth in the number of both singles and cohabitors. Despite this fact most young people indicate that they eventually desire to marry and to have children.... When cohabitation is not recorded or registered in a uniform manner, statistics which consider only married couples with or without children as families underestimate the de facto number of families. If both married and unmarried couples are considered as family nuclei, as recommended by the United Nations, the total formal number of families in the Netherlands has to be augmented with approximately half a million ¿hidden' families consisting of unmarried couples." RESUMO

"The decision to live alone after leaving the parental home, to cohabit, to marry, or to become [a] mother for the first time, as well as the ages at which these decisions occur, characterize the individual demographic life-course. Based on the first results of the 1993 [Netherlands] Family and Fertility Survey it is shown that the kind of transitions made and the age at which these occur change.... The ages at which transitions in the demographic life-course are made, are compared for generations born after 1950. The results point to a continuous change. The only exception is the tendency to stay at the parents home, which changed direction towards a longer stay for those born since the mid 1960s." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

RESUMO

PIP: The authors review changes in data collection and analysis performed by the Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics in response to shifts in demographic behavior during the period 1960-1990. Such changes include trends toward voluntary childlessness and consensual union among couples and asylum-seeking among migrants.^ieng

RESUMO

PIP: Changing marriage patterns in the Netherlands are described. The author notes that although the popularity of marriage at younger ages has declined rapidly in recent years, cohabitation at the same ages has increased significantly. By the end of the 1980s almost one-half of women aged 18-37 with a partner had lived in a consensual union at some time. The author concludes that consensual union before marriage is likely to become the norm during the 1990s. (SUMMARY IN ENG)^ieng

RESUMO

"In the Netherlands increasing numbers of young people who leave their parents' home choose to live alone. This behavioural change dates back to the 60s....[and] is based on general social changes which are not restricted to the Netherlands.... Based on the Netherlands Fertility Survey '88...[a model is developed that] indicates that emancipation-indicators strongly affect the choice of young women to live alone. These are: participation in education, educational attainment and participation in the labour market. The number of young women living alone in the year 2000 has been calculated on the basis of forecasts of the education- and labour-market participation...." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

RESUMO

PIP: Changes in the residential patterns of young adults in the Netherlands over time are analyzed. The authors note an increasing tendency for young people to continue to reside with their parents after reaching adulthood. The social and economic factors affecting these trends are reviewed. RESUMO

PIP: An attempt is made to forecast future trends in the number of households formed by never-married people in the Netherlands up to 2010. Five alternative hypotheses of how such trends might develop are considered based on different assumptions concerning social development. (SUMMARY IN ENG)^ieng

RESUMO

PIP: The authors estimate the demographic effects of population aging in the Netherlands. They discuss the impact of demographic aging on old age pensions, morbidity patterns, causes of death, and leisure activities. They predict an increase of one-person households, which will have an effect on housing preferences and will decrease migration. Estimates are based on 1989 official data. (SUMMARY IN ENG)^ieng
