Geometric total knee replacement: an eight year experience at the new England baptist hospital.

Total knee arthoplasty has been accepted as a valuable adjunct in the treatment of knees severely compromised by disease or trauma. One hundred nine geometric total knee replacements were reviewed to determine the efficacy of the device in the relief of pain, the correction of deformity and instability, and the restoration of functional motion in the diseased knee.1.

Color subtraction arthrography in the diagnosis of component loosening in hip arthroplasty.

While component loosening in arthroplasty of the hip joint may not always be associated with pain, the painful total hip arthroplasty frequently can be shown to be associated with loosening of one or both components. The application of color subtraction techniques to routine arthrography of the hip has greatly increased the authors' accuracy in identifying component loosening in the painful total hip. The technique and its method of application are described in this preliminary report. Several examples of its use are presented. The authors have found this technique to be a useful adjunct to routine arthrography of the hip in selected instances. It has improved overall diagnostic accuracy and is more rapid and less costly than standard photographic subtraction techniques.

A new intramedullary fixation device for the distal third of the femur.

A new fixation device was designed for fractures of the distal third of the femur. An additional use has been for the stabilization of supracondylar osteotomies. The device consists of two- pre-shaped rods which are inserted through the medial and lateral femoral condyles into the medullary canal. The proximal end is ductile and the distal end rigid. Cross compression screws through the distal condylar ends anchor the rods and provide additional fixation for inter-condylar fractures. The preliminary experience in 17 patients demonstrates case of insertion and satisfactory internal fixation.

Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia: successful one stage transposition of the fibula into the distal tibia. A case report.

An infant male presented at age 17 months with an established pseudarthrosis in a kyphoscoliotic right tibia. During the ensuing 6 years, three unsuccessful McFarland bypass bone grafts were performed. Then the distal end of the proximal fibula was placed into the medullary cavity of the proximal end of the distal tibia without disturbing the proximal portion of the fibula. This was augmented by autogenous bone graft. Union occurred in one year. The child has been followed for 7 years and the pseudarthrosis remains healed.
