RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Addressing migrant population's sexual health needs is essential, given the high vulnerability of this population, especially during migratory trajectories and when accessing health care in destination countries. The aim of this scoping review is to identify and describe the structural and intermediary determinants and their dimensions, which negatively influence sexual healthcare access in migrant population in the world in the last 20 years. STUDY DESIGN: Scoping review. METHODS: The search strategy was carried out in the databases PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, and CINAHL. The inclusion criteria were primary studies published in English or Spanish from 2000 to 2022, describing determinants or barriers to access to sexual health for international migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. The construction of the results was based on the social determinants of health framework. RESULTS: A total of 44 studies were included. Thirteen categories that negatively affect access to sexual health in migrants were identified-structural determinants: language and communication barriers, religious and cultural values, VIH stigma and discrimination, irregular migration status, financial constraints, racism and discrimination, gender inequalities, and lack of knowledge and awareness about sexuality and sexual health; and intermediary determinants: financial health coverage, privacy and confidentiality, health system navigation; health system and facilities, and psychosocial factors. CONCLUSION: The most relevant dimensions identified as barriers to access to health services were "culture and societal values" and "health system". Identifying the determinants that affect migrants' access to sexual health is relevant for the formulation of public policies with sociocultural relevance and an intersectional and human rights approach.

RESUMO

The slug Arion subfuscus produces a mucus-based defensive secretion that is remarkably tough. This glue appears to be a double network hydrogel, gaining its toughness through the synergistic actions of two networks of polymers, a relatively stiff network and a relatively deformable network. The double network mechanism has great potential to guide the development of synthetic adhesives. Mechanical tests were performed to analyse key predictions of the mechanism. Stress relaxation tests and tensile tests support the presence of stable cross-links. Cyclic stress-strain tests demonstrate that the glue dissipates a great deal of energy through the failure of these cross-links as sacrificial bonds. Energy dissipation by failure of sacrificial bonds rather than viscous processes is supported by the minimal effect of the time course of the experiments on the measured properties. These sacrificial bonds appear able to reform within minutes after failure. Finally, the glue's stiffness decreases at pH values below 5.5, whereas magnesium and calcium rapidly dissociate from the glue at all pH values tested. Thus, these ions may not be the primary cross-linkers generating the glue's stiffness. This article is part of the theme issue 'Transdisciplinary approaches to the study of adhesion and adhesives in biological systems'.

RESUMO

This is a first report in Mexico of the presence of antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza-3 virus in Mexican sheep in different productive stages. We determine the association of serological positivity with age and production system, and obtain molecular evidence of infection by both virus. RSV prevalence in adult sheep was 47% (49/105) at the tropic and 64% (63/99) at the uplands. A significant difference in RSV seropositivity between animals from the tropic and the uplands was observed (P < 0.05). Seropositivity correlated with production system (P = 0.003, OR = 2.042), with a risk of showing antibodies was 2.042 times higher in sheep under an extensive production system. A significant difference in PI3V seropositivity between animals from either provenance (P = 0.017, OR = 0.475) were also found, with a risk of showing antibodies 0.475 times higher in sheep under an extensive production system. Genetic material from RSV and PI3V was identified by RT-PCR in nasal swab samples from clinically healthy lambs and confirmed by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Serological results show that sheep are susceptible to infection by both viruses, and molecular results suggest that the identified antibodies are result of natural infections and reinfections.

RESUMO

Rhinophyma is a progressively growing benign tumor that has the ability to distort the nasal form. Even though, it is considered a rare subtype of rosacea, it is of great importance for the ability to create: psychic, aesthetic and functional disorders. This report describes a severe case of rhinophyma in a 52 years old male patient, the medical treatment and the surgical technique used for removal.

The hepatic arterial anatomy is highly variable. A 67 year female with pancreatic mass and replaced common hepatic artery originating from the superior mesenteric artery underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). The anomalous vessel was discovered on preoperative CT scan and MRI. The vessel was dissected and preserved as it passed dorsal to the pancreas. Preservation of the blood supply to the liver and biliary tree is important after PD to prevent biliary fistula and hepatic ischaemia.

RESUMO

We demonstrate that magnetic exchange force spectroscopy allows for a quantitative determination of the distance-dependent magnetic exchange interaction across a vacuum gap. Experiments were performed on the antiferromagnetic Fe monolayer on W(001) with magnetically sensitive tips and compared to first-principles calculations performed for different cluster tip models. For stable tips, which can be distinguished from unstable tips by analyzing the dissipation signal, very good agreement with theory is observed.

RESUMO

Applying magnetic exchange force microscopy with an Fe-coated tip, we experimentally resolve the atomic-scale antiferromagnetic structure of the Fe monolayer on W(001). On the basis of first-principles calculations, using an Fe nanocluster as a tip, we determine the distance dependence of the magnetic exchange forces. Significant relaxation of tip and sample atoms occurs, which depend sensitively on the local magnetic configuration. This shifts the onset of magnetic interactions toward larger separations and facilitates their observation. Implementing a multiatom tip in the calculations and accounting for relaxation effects are crucial to obtain the correct sign and distance dependence of the magnetic exchange interaction. By comparison with our calculations, we show that the experimentally observed contrast is due to a competition between chemical and magnetic forces.

RESUMO

Propolis ("bee-glue") is a gummy resinous substance elaborated by honey bees (Apis mellifera) from different types of plant resins. The chemical composition of propolis is very complex and variable as it depends on the botanical source and the environmental conditions prevailing at the location where the resin is collected by bees. The objective [corrected] of this study was to determine the propolis organoleptic and physicochemical properties of different types in the Province of Nuble (VIII Región, Chile). Samples were collected at different sites located in the Central Valley, ranging from the coast to the mountain skirts. Analyses included humidity, ashes, wax content, total phenolics content, total flavonoids, mechanical impurities, oxidation time, and solubility in ethanol. Results showed that propolis extracts from coastal sites are better quality than those collected at mountain skirts, and these in turn are better than propolis obtained from the Central Valley. All propolis analyzed in this study can be classified according to the Brazilian norm as high flavonoid content. The same homogeneity is observed in the amounts of total phenolics found in the samples. In general terms, properties of the propolis samples analyzed fulfill the quality requirements of the current international standards.

A rapid and sensitive indirect competitive inhibition enzyme immunoassay (CIEIA) method has been developed for quantitating taxanes in extracts of Taxus brevifolia Nutt. tissue and in human plasma. High titer rabbit polyclonal antibodies (pAb) were raised against a conjugate of 7-succinyltaxol and keyhole limpet hemocyanin. The presence of taxane analyte competitively inhibited the binding of the rabbit anti-taxane pAbs to a 7-succinyltaxol-bovine serum albumin solid phase coating antigen. The CIEIA detected taxol and cephalomannine in concentrations as low as 0.3 ng/ml (3.5 x 10(-4) microM), but did not detect baccatin III or 10-deacetylbaccatin III at concentrations below 1000 ng/ml (1.7 microM and 1.8 microM, respectively). This method is useful for estimating the taxane content of T. brevifolia extracts and may be useful for monitoring the taxol plasma level of taxol-treated patients.

RESUMO

Mouse monoclonal and rabbit polyclonal antibodies were produced against conjugates of keyhole limpet hemocyanin and chemically defined palytoxin haptens. Palytoxin haptens were produced by derivatization of the primary amino group with sulfosuccinimidyl 4-(N-maleimidomethyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylate or succinimidyl 3-(2-pyridyldithio)propionate. Selected antibodies were used to develop five palytoxin-specific enzyme-linked immunoassay formats for the quantitation of palytoxin in biological matrices, including crude extracts of Palythoa tuberculosa. The formats developed include an indirect competitive inhibition enzyme-linked immunoassay, two types of direct competitive inhibition enzyme-linked immunoassays, and both indirect and direct sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays are capable of detecting as little as 10 pg palytoxin per test, but may be subject to matrix interference. The direct competitive inhibition enzyme-linked immunoassays detect as little as 30 pg palytoxin per test with a total assay time of only 4 hr. The enzyme-linked immunoassays do not cross-react with the other marine toxins tested, but do cross-react with certain non-toxic, treated preparations of palytoxin. The enzyme-linked immunoassays were used to quantitate palytoxin in P. tuberculosa extracts and to monitor toxin isolation. These enzyme-linked immunoassay systems can substitute for the mouse bioassay of palytoxin, providing a rapid, sensitive, and accurate means of toxin detection.

RESUMO

Didemnin A was conjugated at the amino terminus of the N-methylleucine residue, via the linkers N-succinimidyl-3-(2-pyridyldithio)-propionate and trans-1,4-maleimidomethyl-cyclohexane carboxylic acid, to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The didemnin-KLH conjugates were used to hyperimmunize rabbits. The resulting high titer antisera were employed with didemnin-BSA conjugate-coated microtiter plate wells to develop an indirect competitive inhibition enzyme immunoassay (CIEIA) that was fully cross reactive with didemnin B. A CIEIA is described that is capable of detecting the drug in plasma from didemnin B-treated patients at concentrations down to 1-3 ng/ml. This simple, sensitive CIEIA has been employed to demonstrate plasma drug clearance profiles with samples from didemnin B-treated patients.
