RESUMO

Using Lactiplantibacillus plantarum as a food-grade carrier to create non-GMO whole-cell biocatalysts is gaining popularity. This work evaluates the immobilization yield of a chitosanase (CsnA, 30 kDa) from Bacillus subtilis and a mannanase (ManB, 40 kDa) from B. licheniformis on the surface of L. plantarum WCFS1 using either a single LysM domain derived from the extracellular transglycosylase Lp_3014 or a double LysM domain derived from the muropeptidase Lp_2162. ManB and CsnA were fused with the LysM domains of Lp_3014 or Lp_2162, produced in Escherichia coli and anchored to the cell surface of L. plantarum. The localization of the recombinant proteins on the bacterial cell surface was successfully confirmed by Western blot and flow cytometry analysis. The highest immobilization yields (44-48%) and activities of mannanase and chitosanase on the displaying cell surface (812 and 508 U/g of dry cell weight, respectively) were obtained when using the double LysM domain of Lp_2162 as an anchor. The presence of manno-oligosaccharides or chito-oligosaccharides in the reaction mixtures containing appropriate substrates and ManB or CsnA-displaying cells was determined by high-performance anion exchange chromatography. This study indicated that non-GMO Lactiplantibacillus chitosanase- and mannanase-displaying cells could be used to produce potentially prebiotic oligosaccharides.

Summary: Total knee replacement is increasingly widely prescribed, not only for degenerative joint disease but also for other problems such as articular cartilage disease, misalignment due to causes other than degeneration, bone and joint cancer, and diseases that cause joint destruction. However, changes in knee joint biomechanics as well as complications of the patellofemoral joint after surgery lead to instability, joint pain, patellar rupture, and patellar tendon rupture. These are issues that challenge surgeons as well as make patients hesitant when considering knee replacement surgery. Understanding the changes in patella index that can occur after total knee replacement surgery will help surgeons carefully evaluate patients before surgery and calculate intraoperative techniques to minimize complications. Methods: Fifty-eight patients with 62 knees were diagnosed with osteoarthritis and underwent total knee replacement surgery. All patients had clinical and radiographic evaluation of the knee joint before and after surgery. Results: Patellar indexes did not change significantly after surgery compared to before surgery. Before surgery, 2 patients (3.23%) had true patella baja. After surgery, 7 patients (11.29%) had true patella baja and 3 patients (4.84%) had pseudo-patella baja. The average knee flexion amplitude after surgery was 103.11±15.440, with only 2 patients losing extension >50º. The average KS score after surgery was 83.69±9.98, significantly improved compared to before surgery 33.44±11.38. Similarly, KFS score after surgery was 81.01±8.84 compared to before surgery 37.05±8.08. Conclusion: Changes in index of the patella before and after surgery affect the surgical results, the normal patella group has better results than the group with patella baja.

Aim: Our aim is to determine the applicability of other analyses and develop a new formula appropriate for the Vietnamese population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive analysis was conducted on a total of 120 dental arch samples (18-25 years old, 60 males, and 60 females) with <5 mm of tooth crowding, complete teeth on the dental arch, no missing teeth, and no fillings on the mesial or distal sides. Each study sample will be imprinted and measured using conventional as well as digital methods. Result: There was a significant discrepancy between the overall mesiodistal width from canine to second premolar in the maxilla and mandibular measured with electronic calipers on the cast model and the values calculated by the Moyer, Tanaka - Johnston, Gross - Hasund formulae in the mandibular, and measured by digital scanning and results calculated by the Gross-Hasund formula for maxilla and mandibular and the Moyers, Tanaka-Johnston formula for mandibular. The values obtained were compared with those calculated using the Moyers, Tanaka-Johnston, and Gross-Hasund formulae for the mandibular. Additionally, measurements were taken by digital scanning, and the results were calculated using the Gross-Hasund formula for both the maxilla and mandibular, and the Moyers and Tanaka-Johnston formulae for the mandibular. When used to estimate space analysis in the Vietnamese population, the estimation formula for each gender had greater accuracy and reliability than other widely used methods. Conclusions: As the central incisor and first molar are the first permanent teeth to erupt, the mesiodistal width may be readily measured. This new formula may be used to predict the width in the early stages of the mixed dentition.

Retrusive upper lips, retroclined upper incisors, a shorter midface, and a larger maxillary-mandibular difference are the characteristics of borderline Class III malocclusion. Individuals with borderline Class III malocclusion frequently exhibit certain morphologic, dental, and skeletal traits, which should aid in the diagnosis of the condition. To report the case of a 22-year-old Vietnamese woman who complained of having tense front teeth and lacking confidence when smiling. Medical history did not find anything strange, there was root canal treatment of the first premolar on the left of the upper jaw, asymmetrical concave chin, and right deviation. Orthodontic camouflage treatment using anterior bite turbos in combination with early light short Class III elastics and box elastics was proposed since the patient declined to have orthognathic surgery. In just 10 months of treatment, a Class I molar and canine relationship was created, an anterior crossbite was corrected via mandibular retraction, and severe skeletal malocclusions were successfully treated without orthognathic surgery. Smiling currently showcases the patient's maxillary incisors more prominently, and her lower lip fullness has diminished, giving her a more attractive smile and a significant improvement to her facial profile.

BACKGROUND: Papaya, a highly nutritious and economically significant fruit, is susceptible to infections caused by phytopathogenic fungi. Cinnamon essential oil, derived from Cinnamomum cassia (CC), shows promise in preserving papaya due to its antifungal properties. However, CC is volatile, sensitive to environmental factors, and carries a strong aroma. γ-Cyclodextrin (γ-CD) is known for encapsulating hydrophilic molecules, shielding them from environmental influences, reducing odor, and enabling controlled release due to its unique channel structure. This study aimed to tackle these challenges by preparing and characterizing an inclusion complex of CC with γ-CD (CC-γ-CD), and subsequently evaluating its efficacy in preserving papaya fruits. RESULTS: Analyses, including Fourier-infrared, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal gravity analysis, differential scanning calorimeter, and scanning electron microscopy, revealed successful encapsulation of CC components within the γ-CD cavity. Evaluations of the CC-γ-CD complex's impact on papaya fruit shelf life and quality showed notable enhancements. Fruits treated with CC-γ-CD inclusion complex at a dose of 10 g kg-1 exhibited a 55% extension in shelf-life, evidenced by reduced disease severity index compared with untreated fruit in the same storage conditions. Detailed physicochemical and bromatological assessments highlighted significant improvements, particularly in fruit treated with CC-γ-CD inclusion complex at a dose of 10 g kg-1. CONCLUSION: The application of CC-γ-CD inclusion complex at 10 g kg-1 extended the shelf-life of papaya fruit, significantly and markedly improved the overall quality. These findings underscore the potential of the CC-γ-CD inclusion complex as an effective preservative for papaya, offering a promising solution for its postharvest management and marketability. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Investigation of Lewis acid-base interactions has been conducted by ab initio calculations and machine learning (ML) models. This study aims to resolve two critical tasks that have not been quantitatively investigated. First, ML models developed from density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict experimental BF3 affinity with Pearson correlation coefficients around 0.9 and mean absolute errors around 10 kJ mol-1. The ML models are trained by DFT-calculated BF3 affinity of more than 3000 adducts, with input features readily obtained by rdkit. Second, the ML models have the capability of predicting the relative strength of Lewis base binding atoms in Lewis polybases, which is either an extremely challenging task to conduct experimentally or a computationally expensive task for ab initio methods. The study demonstrates and solidifies the potential of combining DFT calculations and ML models to predict experimental properties, especially those that are scarce and impractical to empirically acquire.

Background: The anatomical parameters of the acetabulum vary among races and geographical regions. Multislice Computed Tomography (CT) has proven to be a practical approach to assess morphological parameters of the acetabulum. The purpose of this study was to explore morphological characteristics of the acetabulum measured by CT scans in Vietnamese adults. Methods: Thirty-five consecutive patients aged 18 years and older received indications and eligibility for total hip replacement surgery. Sixty-three acetabulum were examined with multislice computed tomographic system (CT) with multiplanar reconstruction (MPR). Measured morphometric parameters of acetabulum included acetabular inclination angle (AIA), acetabular anteversion angle (AAA), acetabular angle of sharp (AAS), sagittal acetabular angle (SAA), acetabular horizontal offset (AHO), transverse acetabular ligament anteversion (TALA), transverse acetabular ligament inclination (TALI), acetabular depth (ADe), acetabular depth ratio (ADr) and acetabular diameter (ADi). Results: The mean values of acetabular diameter, femoral head diameter, AIA, AAA, AAS, SAA, TALA, TALI, AHO, ADe, ADr were 50.22±3.56 mm, 43.54±3.68 mm, 40.27±5.09 mm, 13.30±5.54 mm, 39.46±5.41 mm, 26.38±9.01 mm, 9.49±3.92 mm, 47.70±6.73 mm, 3.06±0.37 mm, 18.62±2.95 mm and 309.60±41.87 mm. Conclusion: Our initial data has showed morphological characteristics of the acetabulum in Vietnamese adults, different from the populations from other parts of world. Also, significant correlation between the orientation of the acetabulum and the transverse acetabular ligament was documented.

Avian influenza viruses of the H6 subtype are prevalent in wild ducks and likely play an important role in the ecology of influenza viruses through reassortment with other avian influenza viruses. Yet, only 152 Vietnamese H6 virus sequences were available in GISAID (Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data) prior to this study with the most recent sequences being from 2018. Through surveillance in Vietnamese live bird markets from 2018 to 2021, we identified 287 samples containing one or several H6 viruses and other influenza A virus subtypes, demonstrating a high rate of co-infections among birds in Vietnamese live bird markets. For the 132 H6 samples with unique influenza virus sequences, we conducted phylogenetic and genetic analyses. Most of the H6 viruses were similar to each other and closely related to other H6 viruses; however, signs of reassortment with other avian influenza viruses were evident. At the genetic level, the Vietnamese H6 viruses characterized in our study encode a single basic amino acid at the HA cleavage site, consistent with low pathogenicity in poultry. The Vietnamese H6 viruses analyzed here possess an amino acid motif in HA that confers binding to both avian- and human-type receptors on host cells, consistent with their ability to infect mammals. The frequent detection of H6 viruses in Vietnamese live bird markets, the high rate of co-infections of birds with different influenza viruses, and the dual receptor-binding specificity of these viruses warrant their close monitoring for potential infection and spread among mammals.

AIMS: We investigated the antibacterial efficacy of Umonium38 and Virkon® against Burkholderia pseudomallei, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) up to 14 days following treatment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Umonium38 was diluted to 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5% and 3%, tested against the bacterial strains at various contact times (15 min to 24 h), and incubated for up to 14 days. A minimum concentration of 0.5% Umonium38 with a contact time of 15 min effectively killed approximately 108 CFU/ml of all four bacterial species. No growth was observed on agar plates from day 0 until day 14 for all six concentrations. The bacteria were also inactivated by a 30-minute treatment time using Virkon® 1% solution. CONCLUSIONS: Umonium38 effectively inactivates B. pseudomallei, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and MRSA at a concentration of ≥ 0.5% with a contact time of at least 15 min. The antimicrobial effect of Umonium38 remained for 14 days.

INTRODUCTION: Rickettsia spp. and Orientia spp. are the causes of neglected infections that can lead to severe febrile and systemic illnesses in humans. Implementing proper biosafety practices when handling these pathogens is crucial to ensure a safe and sustainable work environment. It is essential to assess the current knowledge and identify any potential gaps to develop effective measures that minimise the risk of exposure to these pathogens. By doing so, we can establish a comprehensive framework that promotes safety, mitigates hazards, and safeguards the well-being of personnel and the surrounding community. METHODS AND RESULTS: This review aimed to synthesise and determine the evidence base for biosafety precautions for Rickettsia spp. and Orientia spp. pathogens. Enhancing our understanding of the relative infectious risk associated with different strains of Rickettsia and Orientia spp. requires identifying the infectious dose of these pathogens that can cause human disease. The application of risk groups for Rickettsia and Orientia spp. is inconsistent across jurisdictions. There is also incomplete evidence regarding decontamination methods for these pathogens. With regards to Orientia spp. most of the available information is derived from experiments conducted with Rickettsia spp. CONCLUSIONS: Rickettsia and Orientia spp. are neglected diseases, as demonstrated by the lack of evidence-based and specific biosafety information about these pathogens. In the case of Orientia spp., most of the available information is derived from Rickettsia spp., which may not be appropriate and overstate the risks of working with this pathogen. The advent of effective antibiotic therapy and a better understanding of the true hazards and risks associated with pathogen manipulation should inform decisions, allowing a sustainable and safe work environment.

BACKGROUND: Wearable devices have been used extensively both inside and outside of the hospital setting. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in some contexts, there was an increased need to remotely monitor pulse and saturated oxygen for patients due to the lack of staff and bedside monitors. OBJECTIVE: A prototype of a remote monitoring system using wearable pulse oximeter devices was implemented at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from August to December 2021. The aim of this work was to support the ongoing implementation of the remote monitoring system. METHODS: We used an action learning approach with rapid pragmatic methods, including informal discussions and observations as well as a feedback survey form designed based on the technology acceptance model to assess the use and acceptability of the system. Based on these results, we facilitated a meeting using user-centered design principles to explore user needs and ideas about its development in more detail. RESULTS: In total, 21 users filled in the feedback form. The mean technology acceptance model scores ranged from 3.5 (for perceived ease of use) to 4.4 (for attitude) with behavioral intention (3.8) and perceived usefulness (4.2) scoring in between. Those working as nurses scored higher on perceived usefulness, attitude, and behavioral intention than did physicians. Based on informal discussions, we realized there was a mismatch between how we (ie, the research team) and the ward teams perceived the use and wider purpose of the technology. CONCLUSIONS: Designing and implementing the devices to be more nurse-centric from their introduction could have helped to increase their efficiency and use during the complex pandemic period.

OBJECTIVES: SARS-CoV-2 transmission and epidemic potential is related to the population's immunity levels. As such, assessing different regions' preexisting immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 is important to understand the transmission potential of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. DESIGN: In 975 serum samples from Vietnam (2014 to 2019), anti-SARS-CoV-2 Immunoglobulin G levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) was performed using Wuhan strain and variants of concern (VOCs). Cross-reactivity was confirmed by analyzing B-cell receptor (BCR) repertoire sequences and identifying BCR repertoire sequences-derived T-cell epitopes. RESULTS: Overall, 20.9% (n = 76/364) and 9.2% (n = 7) demonstrated SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing activity (PRNT50) against the Wuhan and Alpha strain, respectively. Neutralizing activity against Beta, Gamma, and Delta strains was absent (PRNT50<5) in all samples. Cross-reactive epitopes against SARS-CoV-2 and other coronavirus spike proteins were detected in the N-terminal domain, S2, and receptor-binding domain regions. CONCLUSIONS: Following BCR and major histocompatibility complex analysis, T-cell receptor-recognized epitope motif (TREM) among pathogenic coronaviruses and coronaviruses spike proteins were the top TREM peptide, suggesting that pre-existing immunity against SARS-CoV-2 in Vietnam was due to exposure to common cold coronaviruses. With limited immunity against emerging VOCs, further monitoring, and control of the epidemic, along with COVID-19 vaccine programs against VOCs, are necessary.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The 30-day readmission rate is a nationally recognized quality measure with nearly one-fifth of patients being readmitted. This study aims to evaluate frailty, as measured by the hospital frailty risk score (HFRS), as a prognostic indicator for 30-day readmission after inpatient ERCP. METHODS: We analyzed weighted discharge records from the 2017 Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) to identify patients undergoing ERCP between 01/01/2017 and 11/30/2017. Our primary outcome was the 30-day unplanned readmission rate in frail (defined as HFRS > 5) against non-frail (HFRS < 5) patients. A mixed effects multivariable logistic regression method was employed. RESULTS: Among 68,206 weighted hospitalized patients undergoing ERCP, 31.3% were frail. Frailty was associated with higher 30-day readmission (OR 1.23, 95% CI [1.16-1.30]). Multivariable analysis showed a greater risk of readmission with cirrhosis (OR 1.26, 95% CI [1.10-1.45]), liver transplantation (OR 1.36, 95% CI [1.08-1.71]), cancer (OR 1.58, 95% CI [1.48-1.69]), and male gender (OR 1.24, 95% CI [1.18-1.31]). Frail patients also had higher mortality rate (1.8% vs 0.6%, p < 0.01)], longer LOS during readmission (6.7 vs 5.6 days, p < 0.01), and incurred more charges from both hospitalizations ($175,620 vs $132,519, p < 0.01). Sepsis was the most common primary indication for both frail and non-frail readmissions but accounted for a greater percentage of frail readmissions (17.9% vs 12.4%, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Frailty is associated with higher readmission rates, mortality, LOS, and hospital charges for admitted patients undergoing ERCP. Sepsis is the leading cause for readmission. Independent risk factors for readmission include liver transplantation, cancer, cirrhosis, and male gender.

Laboratory-acquired infections (LAIs) and accidental pathogen escape from laboratory settings (APELS) are major concerns for the community. A risk-based approach for pathogen research management within a standard biosafety management framework is recommended but is challenging due to reasons such as inconsistency in risk tolerance and perception. Here, we performed a scoping review using publicly available, peer-reviewed journal and media reports of LAIs and instances of APELS between 2000 and 2021. We identified LAIs in 309 individuals in 94 reports for 51 pathogens. Eight fatalities (2·6% of all LAIs) were caused by infection with Neisseria meningitidis (n=3, 37·5%), Yersinia pestis (n=2, 25%), Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (S Typhimurium; n=1, 12·5%), or Ebola virus (n=1, 12·5%) or were due to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (n=1, 12·5%). The top five LAI pathogens were S Typhimurium (n=154, 49·8%), Salmonella enteritidis (n=21, 6·8%), vaccinia virus (n=13, 4·2%), Brucella spp (n=12, 3·9%), and Brucella melitensis (n=11, 3·6%). 16 APELS were reported, including those for Bacillus anthracis, SARS-CoV, and poliovirus (n=3 each, 18·8%); Brucella spp and foot and mouth disease virus (n=2 each, 12·5%); and variola virus, Burkholderia pseudomallei, and influenza virus H5N1 (n=1 each, 6·3%). Continual improvement in LAI and APELS management via their root cause analysis and thorough investigation of such incidents is essential to prevent future occurrences. The results are biased due to the reliance on publicly available information, which emphasises the need for formalised global LAIs and APELS reporting to better understand the frequency of and circumstances surrounding these incidents.

In this study, crystalline spinel zinc ferrite nanoparticles (ZnFe2O4 NPs) were successfully prepared and proposed as a high-performance electrode material for the construction of an electrochemical sensing platform for the detection of paracetamol (PCM). By modifying a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPE) with ZnFe2O4 NPs, the electrochemical characteristics of the ZnFe2O4/SPE and the electrochemical oxidation of PCM were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), chronoamperometry (CA), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) methods. The calculated electrochemical kinetic parameters from these techniques including electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), peak-to-peak separation (ΔEp), charge transfer resistance (Rct), standard heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constants (k0), electron transfer coefficient (α), catalytic rate constant (kcat), adsorption capacity (Γ), and diffusion coefficient (D) proved that the as-synthesized ZnFe2O4 NPs have rapid electron/mass transfer characteristics, intrinsic electrocatalytic activity, and facilitate the adsorption-diffusion of PCM molecules towards the modified electrode surface. As expected, the ZnFe2O4/SPE offered excellent analytical performance towards sensing of PCM with a detection limit of 0.29 µM, a wide linear range of 0.5-400 µM, and high electrochemical sensitivity of 1.1 µA µM-1 cm-2. Moreover, the proposed ZnFe2O4-based electrochemical nanosensor also exhibited good repeatability, high anti-interference ability, and practical feasibility toward PCM sensing in a pharmaceutical tablet. Based on these observations, the designed electrochemical platform not only provides a high-performance nanosensor for the rapid and highly efficient detection of PCM but also opens a new avenue for routine quality control analysis of pharmaceutical formulations.

In 2022, a large dengue outbreak was reported in Vietnam, where dengue was endemic. A total of 1889 acute-phase serum samples were collected from patients with suspected dengue at Vung Tau General Hospital, the core hospital in Vung Tau Province, southern Vietnam. Among the 1889 samples analyzed for laboratory confirmation of dengue virus (DENV) infection, 339 positive cases were identified, of which 130 were primary infections and 209 were secondary infections. DENV-2 was the dominant serotype in both primary and secondary infection groups. Phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of the envelope protein-coding region revealed the emergence of a new DENV-2 lineage during this outbreak.

Objective: Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a primary cause of paediatric severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) worldwide, especially in developing countries. We investigated the genetic characteristics of RSV in northern Viet Nam to determine the prevalence and distribution of subtypes as well as the diversity and transmission patterns of genotypes. Methods: In two facilities, from January 2017 to December 2020, 1563 clinical specimens were collected from paediatric patients hospitalized with SARI and tested for RSV. Selected positive samples underwent sequencing analysis targeting the second hypervariable region of the G gene using next-generation sequencing. Results: The RSV positivity rate was 28.02% (438/1563 samples), and prevalence was highest in children aged < 1 year (43.84%; 192/438). Subtype RSV-A accounted for 53.42% (234/438) of cases, RSV-B for 45.89% (201/438), and there was coinfection in 0.68% (3/438). Both subtypes cocirculated and peaked during August-September in each year of the study. Phylogenetic analysis showed that RSV-A samples belonged to the ON1 genotype, which has three subgenotypes: ON1.1, ON1.2 and ON1.3. However, we did not find the 72-nucleotide duplication in the second hypervariable region of the G gene, a characteristic of genotype ON1, in any RSV-A samples. RSV-B samples belonged to genotype BA9. Discussion: Our results provide additional molecular characterization of RSV infections in Viet Nam. Specially, our study is the first to report the absence of the 72-nucleotide duplication in the G gene of RSV-A genotype ON1 in Viet Nam, which may help in understanding the genetic evolution of RSV and be useful for vaccine development in the future.

We isolated 77 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses during routine surveillance in live poultry markets in northern provinces of Vietnam from 2018 to 2021. These viruses are of the H5N6 subtype and belong to HA clades 2.3.4.4g and 2.3.4.4h. Interestingly, we did not detect viruses of clade 2.3.4.4b, which in recent years have dominated in different parts of the world. The viruses isolated in this current study do not encode major determinants of mammalian adaptation (e.g., PB2-E627K or PB1-D701N) but possess amino acid substitutions that may affect viral receptor-binding, replication, or the responses to human antiviral factors. Several of the highly pathogenic H5N6 virus samples contained other influenza viruses, providing an opportunity for reassortment. Collectively, our study demonstrates that the highly pathogenic H5 viruses circulating in Vietnam in 2018-2021 were different from those in other parts of the world, and that the Vietnamese H5 viruses continue to evolve through mutations and reassortment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: While guidelines exist for the evaluation and management of esophageal dysphagia in the general population, dysphagia disproportionately affects the elderly. In this article, we reviewed the literature on evaluating esophageal dysphagia in elderly patients and proposed a diagnostic algorithm based on this evidence. RECENT FINDINGS: In older patients, dysphagia is often well compensated for by altered eating habits and physiologic changes, underreported by patients, and missed by healthcare providers. Once identified, dysphagia should be differentiated into oropharyngeal and esophageal dysphagia to guide diagnostic workup. For esophageal dysphagia, this review proposes starting with endoscopy with biopsies, given its relative safety even in older patients and potential for interventional therapy. If endoscopy shows a structural or mechanical cause, then further cross-sectional imaging should be considered to assess for extrinsic compression, and same session endoscopic dilation should be considered for strictures. If biopsies and endoscopy are normal, then esophageal dysmotility is more likely, and high-resolution manometry and additional workup should be performed following the updated Chicago Classification. Even after diagnosis of the root cause, complications including malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia should also be assessed and monitored, as they both result from and can further contribute to dysphagia. The successful evaluation of esophageal dysphagia in elderly patients requires a thorough, standardized approach to collecting a history, selection of appropriate diagnostic workup, and assessment of risk of potential complications, including malnutrition and aspiration.
