RESUMO

In recent years, the avocado has been one of the most dynamic fruits in the world market. In particular, cv. Hass stands out due to its productivity, nutritional quality, and acceptance. Under tropical conditions, weather elements, especially air temperature, and precipitation, affect the productivity and quality of cv. Hass. However, in tropical environments, many relationships between weather and phenological aspects of this cultivar are still unknown. Given this situation, our aim was to identify the variation and degree of association between the phenology of avocado cv. Hass and thermal time (TT) under low-latitude conditions. Eight commercial fields planted with cv. Hass grafted onto Antillean genotypes, located in an altitudinal transect between 1,700 and 2,500 m, were evaluated. The evaluation was carried out for three years and was focused on determining the differences in avocado phenological patterns associated with different environmental variables monitored by weather stations at each location. Air temperature data were used to calculate the base temperature (BT) using different methods for all phenological stages. Later the TT was determined for each stage and all locations. The results show that the duration of each phenological stage varies as a function of elevation (air temperature) and that the phenological stages overlap at the regional, crop field, and plant levels at different periods of the year, generating a high phenological variability but with specific patterns associated with temperature and precipitation. The BT for each phenological stage varied between 0.3 and 7.5 °C, and TT was found to vary depending on the method of calculation. Our work suggests that the generalization of a BT of 10 °C is not applicable for avocado cv. Hass crops under tropical conditions, specifically in the case of Colombia. Detailed studies of phenological relationships with respect to climatic variables will allow a better approximation of the productive behavior of avocado cv. Hass.

The aim of this study was to evaluate pain perception after and at early postoperative period (one week) for patients underwent to conventional and guided surgical procedures for implant placement. Eighty patients (35 men, 40 women, ages between 20 and 70 years-old) with bilateral indication for maxillary or mandibular implants were selected according to pre-determined criteria. All surgeries were performed on morning by the same operator. The McGill´s and Borg pain Questionnaires were applied 20 minutes and one week after surgeries by another professional not involved on surgical procedures. The definitive prostheses were installed two months later. CBCT scans were made to evaluate final implant positioning. The results revealed that the best scores were provided with guided surgery for both Questionnaires and in both evaluation periods. However, clinicians must consider negative issues regarding guided surgery procedures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The management of hydatid liver disease (HLD) includes various nonsurgical and surgical treatment options. METHODS: The purpose of the present longitudinal study was to report the changes in surgical management and the consequent outcome of HLD patients in 10 referral surgical centres in Argentina from 1975 to 2007. The study result analysis was divided into two study periods (1975-1990 and 1991-2007). RESULTS: A total of 1412 patients underwent radical (Group 1: 396 patients), conservative (Group 2: 748 patients) or combined (Group 3: 536 interventions in 268 patients) surgical procedures. The overall mortality and complication rate (Clavien I-IV) was 1.8 and 39% respectively. The complication rate was significantly lower in Group 1 (26%) compared with Group 2 (45%) and Group 3 (42%) There was a significant decrease in mortality (2.3 vs. 1%), complication (42 vs. 34%) and early reoperation (12 vs. 6%) rates between the first study part (918 patients) and the second study part (494 patients). During a median follow-up of 7 years, there was a significant decrease in the first part of this study in the late reoperation rate (8.4-3%) and in disease recurrence (9-1.6%). CONCLUSION: This large national observational multicentre series shows a significant improvement in surgical management of HLD in Argentina, with a decrease in mortality, morbidity, early and late reoperation and recurrence rates. A recent trend was observed in favour of an earlier diagnosis, less complicated clinical presentation and recent use of minimally invasive approaches.

RESUMO

Reprinted with permission from Environmental Health Perspectives. Dec 2006;114:1942-1949. In this study we assessed the potential effects of climate variability and change on population health in Cuba. We describe the climate of Cuba as well as the patterns of climate-sensitive diseases of primary concern, particularly dengue fever. Analyses of the associations between climatic anomalies and disease patterns highlight current vulnerability to climate variability. We describe current adaptations, including the application of climate predictions to prevent disease outbreaks. Finally, we present the potential economic costs associated with future impacts due to climate change. The tools used in this study can be useful in the development of appropriate and effective adaptation options to address the increased climate variability associated with climate change.
