LEARNS: A creative approach to analysing and representing narrative data incorporating photo-elicitation techniques.

BACKGROUND: Diversity exists in how storied data gathered in narrative inquiry is analysed and represented, more so when there is a need to combine multiple data collection methods, including photographs. AIM: This paper discusses the use of an analytical framework entitled LEARNS developed as part of a PhD study that has potential to fill this gap. RESULTS: The step-by-step framework presented in this paper was developed in order to analyse the data collected in this research study and gives understanding and insight into the experience of mothers whose babies are removed at birth. The LEARNS framework provides transparency and credibility; it also negates the need to restrict findings to broad themes via content/thematic analysis. CONCLUSIONS: LEARNS could offer other researchers a reliable framework to use for future social science research.

Parting the cloud s: a vision of supervision of midwifery.

This paper describes a response to the evidence that midwives often have a limited view of the roles and responsibilities of the supervisor of midwives (SoM) and SoM team. Using a creative approach (word clouds) and midwife/SoM stories, the importance of relationships which are supportive of midwives, women and normality is highlighted. Emotional intelligence and interprofessional communication are also shown to be key aspects of the role. Supervision has an important role to play in supporting midwives' development, promoting normality and generally protecting midwives and the public. Reflection using creative media can contribute to this.

It is time for others to take over Jennifer worth's legacy.

The stories in the late Jennifer Worth's Call the Midwife trilogy (obituary June 15) lead us into a different time and place. As the chapters unfold, we get to know some of her colleagues and patients from London's East End in the 1950s.
