RESUMO

This article introduces novel numerical approaches utilizing both standard and nonstandard finite difference methods to solve one-dimensional Bratu's problems. Using the quasilinearization technique, the original problem is converted into a sequence of linear problems. Chebyshev polynomials are employed to approximate the second derivative of the function y(x), after which Sumudu transform is applied to obtain a new form of trial function. The obtained trial function is then substituted into a linearized and discretized Bratu's equations. We discuss the convergence of the schemes and compare the numerical outcomes to those derived using other relevant methods. We further modify one of the new schemes and apply it to solve boundary value problem with associated Robin conditions. The results show that the proposed schemes yield accurate approximations to the solutions of the problems considered.

RESUMO

One of the significant water-related health challenges globally is due to pollutant fate. Contaminants endanger the lives of humans, animals, and even plants. The present mathematical analysis explains reactive wastewater sludge ejected into a drinking water source from wastewater treatment plants. The assumption that wastewater sludge follows a power-law constitutive relation leads to nonlinear momentum and concentration equations. The contaminants are assumed to follow a nonlinear irreversible first-order sorption model. The numerical solution of the coupled problem is solved using the Bivariate Spectral Local Linearization Method and validated with the spectral Chebyshev weighted residual method. Profiles are presented for dimensionless flow velocity and concentration. Comprehensive explanations for the obtained results are provided with relevant applications.

RESUMO

A mathematical model of malaria dynamics with naturally acquired transient immunity in the presence of protected travellers is presented. The qualitative analysis carried out on the autonomous model reveals the existence of backward bifurcation, where the locally asymptotically stable malaria-free and malaria-present equilibria coexist as the basic reproduction number crosses unity. The increased fraction of protected travellers is shown to reduce the basic reproduction number significantly. Particularly, optimal control theory is used to analyse the non-autonomous model, which incorporates four control variables. The existence result for the optimal control quadruple, which minimizes malaria infection and costs of implementation, is explicitly proved. Effects of combining at least any three of the control variables on the malaria dynamics are illustrated. Furthermore, the cost-effectiveness analysis is carried out to reveal the most cost-effective strategy that could be implemented to prevent and control the spread of malaria with limited resources.

RESUMO

The present article investigates the entropy generation rate in the nonlinear convective flow of a reactive couple stress liquid through a channel filled with saturated materials and subjected to convective cooling. Analytical solutions of the coupled nonlinear boundary-value problems arising from the mathematical formulation are obtained by using the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM). The analytical solutions are further validated numerically with the fourth order Runge-Kutta (RK4) to establish the accuracy of the method. Velocity, temperature, entropy generation, and heat irreversibility ratio profiles are presented and discussed extensively. The result of the computation shows that entropy generation increases significantly with increasing buoyancy parameter.
