RESUMO

Divorce is woven into the fabric of today's American society, and parents and professionals alike are concerned about the effects of divorce on children of all ages. Research in this area is in its infancy, particularly research about how divorce effects teenagers, but research thus far has helped us to appreciate that divorce is difficult for children of all ages. This paper considers the effects of divorce on teenagers by drawing from existing research and clinical experiences with teenagers. The focus of this presentation is how teenagers feel when parents divorce and how they behave in response to divorce. The purpose of this focus is to provide those who interact with teenagers a greater understanding of how teenagers react to divorce.

RESUMO

Significant strides have been made in recent years in the epidemiologic study of obstructive lung diseases including asthma. Community population samples are being evaluated prospectively and followed up longitudinally to document the appearance of morbidity and clinical diagnoses. Also, a variety of environmental, physiologic, and immunologic variables are being collected on a serial basis to correlate changes with the appearance (or disappearance) of recognizable disease. Unfortunately, until the semantics and diagnostic labeling of airway abnormalities becomes more precise, especially in the older population, the incidence and prevalence of disease will lack the precision it should have.

RESUMO

The inclusion of a psychiatric social worker as a member of a pediatric team in a prepaid group practice extends the range of pediatric mental health services to children. This paper discusses the collaboration of the social worker with the pediatricians and allied health personnel on the team in dealing with the emotional problems of referred children and their parents. Case examples are included. All cases seen by the social worker during a 6-month period are reviewed. With available psychiatric backup a wide range of emotional problems are identified, and effective mental health care is provided.
