[Work-related anxiety among nursing personnel]. / Ansiedad laboral en personal de enfermería.

OBJECTIVE: To assess if work-related activities represented a threatening situation for nursing personnel through the correlation between the level of usual anxiety (trait-anxiety) and the level of anxiety present during working hours (state-anxiety). As well as, to determine state-anxiety risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The state-trait-anxiety inventory was administered to 285 nurses of a health care institution chosen at random. RESULTS: The correlation coefficient was 0.53 (CI 95% = 0.43, 0.60, p = 0.001), after controlling for age, marital status, number of children, workload, service, category, level of care, years of service and personal relationships. Negative personal relationships and = 1 year of service influenced the level of anxiety present during working hours (beta = -0.21, beta = -0.24, p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Work-related activities represented a threatening situation and contributed to anxiety. It is necessary to recognize anxiety work-related risk factors for developing coping strategies and preventing well-being damage.

El objetivo general de este estudio es identificar la incidencia de obito fetal y posibles factores de riesgo en pacientes asistidas en el hospital Obrero nº 2 CNS de Cochabamba gestion 1994-98, es un trabajo longitudinal restrospectivo, institucional, descriptivo , no experimental. Las conclusiones mas significativas que se hallaron fueron que la incidencia inicial desde 1994 se incremento en una poblacion de 1.000 nacimientos por año desde 25 a 38 obitos fetales; se debe destacar en este punto que el incremento se explica por la poblacion asistida en estos 3 ultimos años donde se ha agregado a la poblacion asegurada la poblacion beneficiaria del Decreto Supremo Materno Infantil 24303. La edad materna mas vulnerable de 31 a 35 años con un 25 por ciento de muerte fetal intrauterina, en poco por centaje 8 por ciento son mujeres solteras, la mayor parte provenientes de area periurbana con un 40 por ciento...

Maintenance of employment on dialysis.

This article describes the components of a multidisciplinary effort focused on promoting, among other goals, continued employment during end-stage renal disease (ESRD) treatment. The education and guidance of the patient begin during the pre-ESRD period, intensify through dialysis treatment, and continue even through posttransplantation follow-up. Such focused programs support patients in retaining their usual lifestyle, staying in their current jobs where possible, and maximizing self-esteem and quality of life.

Treatment of chronic amebiasis in pediatric patients with a suspension of quinfamide.

Quinfamide, a dichloroacetyl quinolol synthesized and tested at Sterling Winthrop Research Institute, is a potent luminal amebicide with potential utility for a one-day treatment of chronic and subacute amebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Previous studies demonstrated that quinfamide is a safe and efficacious drug for adult patients when given as a one-day treatment regimen of 300 mg taken in tablet form at a dosage of 100 mg every eight hours. To test the drug in suspension form in pediatric patients, 46 children from newborn to 12 years old, assigned to groups according to age, were administered quinfamide in doses ranging from 50 to 300 mg/day as either single or divided doses. In all age groups quinfamide suspension, given as multiple doses in a single day, was shown to be highly effective in eliminating trophozoites from the stool. Cure rates ranged from 77.8% to 100%.

Effect of trace elements on citric acid fermentation by Aspergillus niger.

Citric acid yields of 98.7% (sugar consumption basis) were reached in shaker flasks with mutant UV-ET-71-15 of Aspergillus niger in a resin-treated sucrose medium of the following composition (g/100 ml): sucrose, 14.0; NH(4)NO(3), 0.20; KH(2)PO(4), 0.10; MgSO(4).7H(2)O, 0.025; and (mg/liter): FeSO(4), 0.15 to 0.75; ZnSO(4), 0.10; and CuSO(4), 0.01. Yields of 75% were obtained in medium with resin-treated clarified syrup and 68% with ferrocyanide-treated blackstrap molasses. Optimal conditions included selection of appropriate pellets as inoculum at 3%, pH of 4.5, temperature at 30 C, agitation at 250 rev/min, and fermentation time of 8 days. The mutant tolerated high concentrations of trace elements.

Sugar substrates for L-lysine fermentation by Ustilago maydis.

The extracellular production of l-lysine in media with cane sugar, blackstrap molasses, or clarified sugar-cane juice by a previously obtained mutant of Ustilago maydis was studied. Enzymatically inverted clarified juice (medium J-3) gave 2.9 g of lysine per liter under the following conditions: inoculum, 5%; pH 5.8; temperature, 30 C; K(La) in the fermentors, 0.41 mmoles of O(2) per liter per min; fermentation time, 72 hr. The concentrate, obtained by direct evaporation and drying of the fermentation broth, could be used as a possible feed supplement because of its amino-acid and vitamin content.
