RESUMO

Capsosiphon fulvescens (CF) is a green alga widely consumed in East Asian countries, particularly in Korea. It has a rich composition of vitamins, minerals, dietary fibers, and bioactive compounds, which contribute to its multiple therapeutic properties. Its application ranges from acting as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent to supporting the skin system. Despite these benefits of CF, the effects and mechanisms of action related to photoaging of the skin have not yet been elucidated. To investigate the photoprotective effects of CF against photoaging, both animal (SKH-1 mouse) and cell models (HaCaT cell line) were used in this study. As a result, administering the CF extract over a period of 10 weeks, which included times of Ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure, significantly reduced erythema and various UVB-induced skin changes, such as wrinkle formation, and the thickening of the epidermis and dermis, as well as alterations in the length and depth of wrinkles. Furthermore, our investigation into CF extract's antiwrinkle properties revealed its efficacy in enhancing skin hydration and collagen content, counteracting the collagen depletion and moisture loss induced by UVB radiation. Also, the fact that the levels of p-ERK, p-p38, and p-JNK proteins went down shows that the CF extract might have a controlling effect on the MAPK signaling pathways. Our findings suggest that CF holds significant potential for preventing photoaging, providing a foundation for the development of functional foods or botanical drugs targeting skin aging and related skin disorders. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This research proved that Capsosiphon fulvescen, a green alga widely consumed in East Asian countries, provides photoprotective activities against UV-induced skin aging. Therefore, Capsosiphon fulvescen can be utilized as functional foods or botanical drugs targeting skin aging and related skin disorders.

The human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line Caco-2, widely used for studying intestinal drug permeability, is typically grown on permeable filter supports and matures in 21 days with frequent media changes. The process is labor-intensive, prone to contamination, and has low throughput, contributing to the overall high utilization cost. Efforts to establish a low-cost, high-throughput, short-duration model have encountered obstacles, such as weaker tight junctions causing monolayer leaks, incomplete differentiation resulting in low transporter expression, intricate and challenging protocols, and cytotoxicity, limiting the usability. Hence, this study aimed to develop a low-cost, efficient, and short-duration model by addressing the aforementioned concerns by customizing the media and finding a safe differentiation inducer. We generated a new rapid model using sodium valerate, which demonstrated sufficient transporter activity, improved monolayer integrity, and higher levels of differentiation markers than the 21-day model. Furthermore, this model exhibited consistent and reliable results when used to evaluate drug permeability over multiple days of repeated use. This study demonstrates the potential of a sodium valerate-assisted abbreviated model for drug permeability assessment with economic and practical advantages.

PURPOSE: We conducted a randomized prospective trial (KLASS-07 trial) to compare laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) and totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (TLDG) for gastric cancer. In this interim report, we describe short-term results in terms of morbidity and mortality. METHODS AND METHODS: The sample size was 442 participants. At the time of the interim analysis, 314 patients were enrolled and randomized. After excluding patients who did not undergo planned surgeries, we performed a modified per-protocol analysis of 151 and 145 patients in the LADG and TLDG groups, respectively. RESULTS: The baseline characteristics, including comorbidity status, did not differ between the LADG and TLDG groups. Blood loss was somewhat higher in the LADG group, but statistical significance was not attained (76.76±72.63 vs. 62.91±65.68 mL; P=0.087). Neither the required transfusion level nor the operation or reconstruction time differed between the 2 groups. The mini-laparotomy incision in the LADG group was significantly longer than the extended umbilical incision required for specimen removal in the TLDG group (4.79±0.82 vs. 3.89±0.83 cm; P<0.001). There were no between-group differences in the time to solid food intake, hospital stay, pain score, or complications within 30 days postoperatively. No mortality was observed in either group. CONCLUSIONS: Short-term morbidity and mortality rates did not differ between the LADG and TLDG groups. The KLASS-07 trial is currently underway. Cliffs contain one of the least known plant communities, which has been overlooked in biodiversity assessments due to the inherent inaccessibility. Our study adopted the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with the telephoto camera to remotely clarify floristic variability across unreachable cliffs. Studied cliffs comprised 17 coastal and 13 inland cliffs in Gageodo of South Korea, among which 9 and 5 cliffs were grazed by the introduced cliff-dwelling goats. The UAV telephotography showed 154 and 166 plant species from coastal and inland cliffs, respectively. Inland cliffs contained more vascular plant species (P < 0.001), increased proportions of fern and woody species (P < 0.05), and decreased proportion of herbaceous species (P < 0.001) than coastal cliffs. It was also found that coastal and inland cliffs differed in the species composition (P < 0.001) rather than taxonomic beta diversity (P = 0.29). Furthermore, grazed coastal cliffs featured the elevated proportions of alien and annual herb species than ungrazed coastal cliffs (P < 0.05). This suggests that coastal cliffs might not be totally immune to grazing if the introduced herbivores are able to access cliff microhabitats; therefore, such anthropogenic introduction of cliff-dwelling herbivores should be excluded to conserve the native cliff plant communities.

Characteristics of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with superoptimal peak inspiratory flow rates (PIFR) has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to compare the characteristics between COPD patients with superoptimal PIFR and those with optimal and sub-optimal PIFR. PIFR was measured using In-Check DIAL G16 and categorized into sub-optimal (PIFR lower than that required by the patient's device), optimal, and superoptimal (peak PIFR ≥ 90 L/min). Considering COPD patients with sub-optimal PIFR as the reference group, analyses were performed to identify PIFR-related factors. Subgroup analysis was performed according to the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) % of the predicted value (%pred). Among 444 post-bronchodilator-confirmed COPD patients from seven tertiary hospitals in South Korea, 98, 223, and 123 were classified into the sub-optimal, optimal, and superoptimal PIFR groups, respectively. The superoptimal PIFR group were younger, had an increased proportion of males, a higher body mass index, lowest number of comorbidities and less frequent exacerbation in the previous year, as well as the highest forced vital capacity %pred. The adjusted odds ratio for frequent exacerbation in the previous year was lower in the superoptimal PIFR group than in the sub-optimal PIFR group and was more pronounced in patients with an FEV1%pred of < 70%. COPD patients with superoptimal PIFR have clinical characteristics different from those patients with the sub-optimal and optimal PIFR. Having a high inspiratory flow may be a favorable trait in COPD.

This study evaluated the use of F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT imaging to differentiate between scrub typhus and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in patients presenting with lymphadenopathy. We carried out a retrospective analysis of 18 scrub typhus patients and seven SLE patients, using various imaging parameters, including lymph node size, spleen and liver lengths, the distance between the two farthest lesions (Dmax), and assessments of glucose metabolism. On FDG PET images, we measured the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of the lymph nodes, spleen, and liver and the mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean) of the liver and spleen. The Dmax values of scrub typhus patients were significantly longer than those of SLE patients, indicating that lymphadenopathy is more generalized in the patients with scrub typhus. The SUVmax values for the lymph node, spleen, and liver were also higher in patients with scrub typhus, while the SUVmean of the liver and spleen did not differ between the two groups. This study is the first to compare FDG PET/CT images between these two conditions, suggesting the potential of this imaging modality to provide critical diagnostic distinctions.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infection with a high case fatality rate. The serious clinical features need to be further defined. We performed a retrospective analysis among SFTS patients in South Korea during 2016-2021 to update the current status. The basic epidemiology of all reported cases was analyzed, and the detailed clinical data of the subjects were further collected from study hospitals selected in terms of their geographic location and capability of SFTS care. Cases of SFTS were reported across the country and were greatly increased since the initial endemic phase, even under the passive surveillance system. The case fatality rate remained at approximately 16.8%. Coinfections at admission were present in 7.8% of the patients. Major complications included bleeding (15.2%), hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (6.7%), bacteremia or candidemia (4.0%), and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (1.7%). It took a median 4 days from the onset of illness to hospital admission. Rapid clinical deterioration was observed with a median 1 day for intensive care unit admission, 3 days for mechanical ventilation, 4 days for renal replacement therapy, and 5 days for death, all after the hospitalization. Multivariate analysis showed that the fatality was associated with older age, bacteremia, or candidemia during hospitalization, and the presence of several variables at admission such as fever, altered mentality, aspartate aminotransferase >200 IU/L, serum creatinine level >1.2 mg/dL, and prolonged prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time. Treatment options to improve clinical outcomes are limited, despite best supportive care. Specific treatment is urgently needed to change the fatal course.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In cases where dumbbell-shaped cervical schwannoma encases the vertebral artery (VA), there is a risk of VA injury during surgery. The objective of this study is to propose a strategy for preserving the VA during the surgical excision of tumors adjacent to the VA through the utilization of anatomic layers. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 37 patients who underwent surgery for dumbbell-shaped cervical schwannoma with contacting VA from January 2004 to July 2023. The VA encasement group consisted of 12 patients, and the VA nonencasement group included 25 patients. RESULTS: The perineurium acted as a protective barrier from direct VA exposure or injury during surgery. However, in the VA encasement group, 1 patient was unable to preserve the perineurium while removing a tumor adjacent to the VA, resulting in VA injury. The patient had the intact dominant VA on the opposite side, and there were no new neurological deficits or infarctions after the surgery. Gross total resection was achieved in 25 patients (67.6%), while residual tumor was confirmed in 12 patients (32.4%). Four patients (33.3% of 12 patients) underwent reoperation because of the regrowth of the residual tumor within the neural foramen. In the case of the 8 patients (66.7% of 12 patients) whose residual tumor was located outside the neural foramen, no regrowth was observed, and there was no recurrence of the tumor within the remaining perineurium after total resection. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, when resecting a dumbbell-shaped cervical schwannoma contacting VA, subperineurium dissection prevents VA injury because the perineurium acts as a protective barrier.

OBJECTIVES: Intraoperative ultrasonography (IOUS) offers the advantage of providing real-time imaging features, yet it is not generally used. This study aims to discuss the benefits of utilizing IOUS in spinal cord surgery and review related literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent spinal cord surgery utilizing IOUS at a single institution were retrospectively collected and analyzed to evaluate the benefits derived from the use of IOUS. RESULTS: A total of 43 consecutive patients were analyzed. Schwannoma was the most common tumor (35%), followed by cavernous angioma (23%) and ependymoma (16%). IOUS confirmed tumor extent and location before dura opening in 42 patients (97.7%). It was particularly helpful for myelotomy in deep-seated intramedullary lesions to minimize neural injury in 13 patients (31.0% of 42 patients). IOUS also detected residual or hidden lesions in 3 patients (7.0%) and verified the absence of hematoma post-tumor removal in 23 patients (53.5%). In 3 patients (7.0%), confirming no intradural lesions after removing extradural tumors avoided additional dural incisions. IOUS identified surrounding blood vessels and detected dural defects in one patient (2.3%) respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The IOUS can be a valuable tool for spinal cord surgery in identifying the exact location of the pathologic lesions, confirming the completeness of surgery, and minimizing the risk of neural and vascular injury in a real-time fashion.

RESUMO

Controlling large-scale many-body quantum systems at the level of single photons and single atomic systems is a central goal in quantum information science and technology. Intensive research and development has propelled foundry-based silicon-on-insulator photonic integrated circuits to a leading platform for large-scale optical control with individual mode programmability. However, integrating atomic quantum systems with single-emitter tunability remains an open challenge. Here, we overcome this barrier through the hybrid integration of multiple InAs/InP microchiplets containing high-brightness infrared semiconductor quantum dot single photon emitters into advanced silicon-on-insulator photonic integrated circuits fabricated in a 300 mm foundry process. With this platform, we achieve single-photon emission via resonance fluorescence and scalable emission wavelength tunability. The combined control of photonic and quantum systems opens the door to programmable quantum information processors manufactured in leading semiconductor foundries.

During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Republic of Korea (ROK) experienced three epidemic waves in February, August, and November 2020. These waves, combined with the overarching pandemic, significantly influenced trends in spinal surgery. This study aimed to investigate the trends in degenerative lumbar spinal surgery in ROK during the early COVID-19 pandemic, especially in relation to specific epidemic waves. Using the National Health Information Database in ROK, we identified all patients who underwent surgery for degenerative lumbar spinal diseases between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020. A joinpoint regression was used to assess temporal trends in spinal surgeries over the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of surgeries decreased following the first and second epidemic waves (p<0.01 and p = 0.34, respectively), but these were offset by compensatory increases later on (p<0.01 and p = 0.05, respectively). However, the third epidemic wave did not lead to a decrease in surgical volume, and the total number of surgeries remained comparable to the period before the pandemic. When compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, average LOH was reduced by 1 day during the COVID-19 period (p<0.01), while mean hospital costs increased significantly from 3,511 to 4,061 USD (p<0.01). Additionally, the transfer rate and the 30-day readmission rate significantly decreased (both p<0.01), while the reoperation rate remained stable (p = 0.36). Despite the impact of epidemic waves on monthly surgery numbers, a subsequent compensatory increase was observed, indicating that surgical care has adapted to the challenges of the pandemic. This adaptability, along with the stable total number of operations, highlights the potential for healthcare systems to continue elective spine surgery during public health crises with strategic resource allocation and patient triage. Policies should ensure that surgeries for degenerative spinal diseases, particularly those not requiring urgent care but crucial for patient quality of life, are not unnecessarily halted.

Introduction: Mortality differences in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) between nonsmokers and smokers remain unclear. We compared the risk of death associated with smoking and COPD on mortality. Methods: The study included participants aged ≥40 years who visited pulmonary clinics and were categorised into COPD or non-COPD and smoker or nonsmoker on the basis of spirometry results and cigarette consumption. Mortality rates were compared between groups using statistical analysis for all-cause mortality, respiratory disease-related mortality, and cardiocerebrovascular disease-related mortality. Results: Among 5811 participants, smokers with COPD had a higher risk of all-cause (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 1.69; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.23-2.33) and respiratory disease-related mortality (aHR, 2.14; 95% CI, 1.20-3.79) than nonsmokers with COPD. Non-smokers with and without COPD had comparable risks of all-cause mortality (aHR, 1.39; 95% CI, 0.98-1.97) and respiratory disease-related mortality (aHR, 1.77; 95% CI, 0.85-3.68). However, nonsmokers with COPD had a higher risk of cardiocerebrovascular disease-related mortality than nonsmokers without COPD (aHR, 2.25; 95% CI, 1.15-4.40). Conclusion: The study found that smokers with COPD had higher risks of all-cause mortality and respiratory disease-related mortality compared to nonsmokers with and without COPD. Meanwhile, nonsmokers with COPD showed comparable risks of all-cause and respiratory mortality but had a higher risk of cardiocerebrovascular disease-related mortality compared to nonsmokers without COPD.

Given the marginal penetration of most drugs across the blood-brain barrier, the efficacy of various agents remains limited for glioblastoma (GBM). Here we employ low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPU) and intravenously administered microbubbles (MB) to open the blood-brain barrier and increase the concentration of liposomal doxorubicin and PD-1 blocking antibodies (aPD-1). We report results on a cohort of 4 GBM patients and preclinical models treated with this approach. LIPU/MB increases the concentration of doxorubicin by 2-fold and 3.9-fold in the human and murine brains two days after sonication, respectively. Similarly, LIPU/MB-mediated blood-brain barrier disruption leads to a 6-fold and a 2-fold increase in aPD-1 concentrations in murine brains and peritumoral brain regions from GBM patients treated with pembrolizumab, respectively. Doxorubicin and aPD-1 delivered with LIPU/MB upregulate major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and II in tumor cells. Increased brain concentrations of doxorubicin achieved by LIPU/MB elicit IFN-γ and MHC class I expression in microglia and macrophages. Doxorubicin and aPD-1 delivered with LIPU/MB results in the long-term survival of most glioma-bearing mice, which rely on myeloid cells and lymphocytes for their efficacy. Overall, this translational study supports the utility of LIPU/MB to potentiate the antitumoral activities of doxorubicin and aPD-1 for GBM.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the development of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) and its risk factors in patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP) and positive ANCA results. METHODS: Data of patients diagnosed with IIP with positive ANCA results at a single tertiary center in South Korea were retrospectively reviewed from January 2013 to August 2023. Cox regression analysis was performed to identify variables associated with AAV occurrence following IIP diagnosis. Kaplan-Meier curves were employed to investigate the relationship between autoantibodies and the occurrence of AAV. RESULTS: In a cohort of 154 IIP-diagnosed patients with positive ANCA results but without AAV, 10.4 % of them eventually developed AAV. The AAV and non-AAV groups did not significantly differ by sex, age, smoking status, urinalysis, or chest computed tomography findings. All the patients who subsequently developed AAV were anti-myeloperoxidase (MPO) positive, while 48.8 % of the non-AAV patients were anti-MPO positive (P < 0.001). Rheumatoid factor (RF) positivity differed significantly (62.5 % vs. 29.2 %, P = 0.007) between the AAV and non-AAV groups. Multivariate Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier analyses revealed RF (HR 4.02; P = 0.004) and anti-MPO (HR 38.10; P < 0.001) positivity as risk factors associated with AAV occurrence. CONCLUSION: Approximately 10 % of ANCA-positive IIP patients developed AAV after an IIP diagnosis. Anti-MPO or co-occurring positive RF poses a significant risk for subsequent AAV occurrence. This emphasizes the importance of careful monitoring in patients with high-risk antibody profiles, even if the complete features of AAV are not present at IIP diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: As a core enzyme in the base excision repair system, uracil DNA glycosylase (UDG) is indispensable in maintaining genomic integrity and normal cell cycles. Its abnormal activity intervenes in cancers and neurodegerative diseases. Previous UDG assays based on isothermal amplification and Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats/Cas (CRISPR/Cas) system were fine in sensitivity, but exposed to complications in assay flow, time, and probe design. After isothermal amplification, a CRISPR/Cas reagent should be separately added with extra manual steps and its guide RNA (gRNA) should be designed, considering the presence of protospacer adjacent motif (PAM) site. RESULTS: We herein describe a UDG-REtarded CRISPR Amplification assay, termed 'URECA'. In URECA, isothermal nucleic acid (NA) amplification and CRISPR/Cas12a system were tightly combined to constitute a one-pot, isothermal CRISPR amplification system. Isothermal NA amplification for a UDG substrate (US) with uracil (U) bases was designed to activate and boost CRISPR/Cas12a reaction. Such scheme enabled us to envision that UDG would halt the isothermal CRISPR amplification reaction by excising U bases and messing up the US. Based on this principle, the assay detected the UDG activity down to 9.17 x 10-4 U/mL in 50 min. With URECA, we fulfilled the recovery test of UDG activities in plasma and urine with high precision and reproducibility and reliably determined UDG activities in cell extracts. Also, we verified its capability to screen candidate UDG inhibitors, showing its potentials in practical application as well as drug discovery. SIGNIFICANCE: URECA offers further merits: i) the assay is seamless. Following target recognition, the reactions proceed in one-step without any intervening steps, ii) probe design is simple. Unlike the conventional CRISPR/Cas12a-based assays, URECA does not consider the PAM site in probe design as Cas12a activation relies on instantaneous gRNA binding to single-stranded DNA strands. By rationally designing an enzyme substrate probe to be specific to other enzymes, while keeping a role as a template for isothermal CRISPR amplification, the detection principle of URECA will be expanded to devise biosensors for various enzymes of biological, clinical significance.

CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: Hard-shell toilet seats may compromise safety and hinder the participation of individuals at risk for pressure injuries (PIs) when using these facilities away from home in public, hotel, or family/friend restrooms. Moreover, people often add "wash-cloths" for additional padding for comfort, and to reduce the risk of PIs due to pressure or shearing on their wheelchairs surfaces. This study investigated the utilization of portable pads, initially designed for toilet use but adaptable to various places and contexts, while examining pad usability. DESIGN: A cross-sectional descriptive survey design. SETTING: Inpatient care, outpatient care, and community setting. PARTICIPANTS: 45 individuals at risk of PIs. RESULTS: Participants extended the use of these pads beyond toilets, employing them as wheelchair armrest and leg rest pads in other settings. Feedback from a customized questionnaire indicated high levels of usefulness (8.5/10) and ease of use (9.1/10) attributed to the pads. Among the features, the top three favored were ease of use, comfort/cushioning, and function. Participants expressed a desire for a variety of sizes and colors to enable versatile usage and suggested incorporating a pocket for storing small items. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Individuals at risk of PIs require cushioning not only on hard-shell toilet seats, but also for additional padding, protection and enhancing the use of wheelchairs. Rehabilitation professionals can play a crucial role in educating and training both clients and caregivers to understand PI prevention, enabling them to effectively leverage the pads in appropriate situations, thereby enhancing their comfort in their wheelchairs during social engagement.

BACKGROUND: Mangosteens, a naturally occurring xanthones, found abundantly in mangosteen fruits. The anti-skin aging potential of γ-mangosteen (GM) remains unexplored; therefore, we investigated the UVB-induced anti-skin aging of GM via activation of autophagy. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that GM exerts antioxidant and anti-aging capabilities both in vitro and in vivo through activation of autophagy as well as control of KEAP1/NRF2 signaling and MAPKs/AP-1/NF-κB-mediated MMPs pathways. METHODS: The anti-skin aging effects of GM were studied using HDF cells and a mice model. Various assays, such as DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, FRAP, and ROS generation, assessed antioxidant activities. Kits measured antioxidant enzymes, SA-ß-gal staining, collagen, MDA content, si-RNA experiments, and promoter assays. Western blotting evaluated protein levels of c-Jun, c-Fos, p-IκBα/ß, p-NF-κB, MAPK, MMPs, collagenase, elastin, KEAP1, NRF2, HO-1, and autophagy-related proteins. RESULTS: GM exhibited strong antioxidant, collagenase and elastase enzyme inhibition activity surpassing α- and ß-mangosteen. GM competitively inhibited elastase with a Ki value of 29.04 µM. GM orchestrated the KEAP1-NRF2 pathway, enhancing HO-1 expression, and suppressed UVB-induced ROS in HDF cells. NRF2 knockdown compromised GM's antioxidant efficacy, leading to uncontrolled ROS post-UVB. GM bolstered endogenous antioxidants, curbing lipid peroxidation in UVB-exposed HDF cells and BALB/c mice. GM effectively halted UVB-induced cell senescence, and reduced MMP-1/-9, while elevated TIMP-1 levels, augmented COL1A1, ELN, and HAS-2 expression in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, it suppressed UVB-induced MAPKs, AP-1, NF-κB phosphorylation. Pharmacological inhibitors synergistically enhanced GM's anti-skin aging potential. Moreover, GM inhibited UVB-induced mTOR activation, upregulated LC3-II, Atg5, Beclin 1, and reduced p62 in both UVB induced HDF cells and BALB/c mice, while blocking of autophagy successfully halt the GM effects against the UVB-induced increase of cell senescence, degradation of collagen through upregulation of MMP-1, underscoring GM's substantial anti-skin aging impact via autophagy induction in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSION: Together, GM has potent antioxidant and anti-skin aging ingredients that can be used to formulate skin care products for both the nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industries.

Cathodes made of LiFePO4 (LFP) offer numerous benefits including being non-toxic, eco-friendly, and affordable. The distinctive olivine structure of LFP cathodes contributes to their electrochemical stability. Nonetheless, this structure is also the cause of their low ionic and electronic conductivity. To enhance these limitations, an uncomplicated approach has been effectively employed. A straightforward solid-state synthesis technique is used to apply a coating of biomass from potato peels to the LFP cathode, boosting its electrochemical capabilities. Potato peels contain pyridinic and pyrrolic nitrogen, which are conducive to ionic and electronic movement and facilitate pathways for lithium-ion and electron transfer, thus elevating electrochemical performance. When coated with nitrogen-doped carbon derived from potato peel biomass (PPNC@LFP), the LFP cathode demonstrates an improved discharge capacity of 150.39 mAh g-1 at a 0.1 C-rate and 112.83 mAh g-1 at a 1.0 C-rate, in contrast to the uncoated LFP which shows capacities of 141.34 mAh g-1 and 97.72 mAh g-1 at the same rates, respectively.
