Several technological developments, such as self-service technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), are disrupting the retailing industry by changing consumption and purchase habits and the overall retail experience. Although AI represents extraordinary opportunities for businesses, companies must avoid the dangers and risks associated with the adoption of such systems. Integrating perspectives from emerging research on AI, morality of machines, and norm activation, we examine how individuals morally behave toward AI agents and self-service machines. Across three studies, we demonstrate that consumers' moral concerns and behaviors differ when interacting with technologies versus humans. We show that moral intention (intention to report an error) is less likely to emerge for AI checkout and self-checkout machines compared with human checkout. In addition, moral intention decreases as people consider the machine less humanlike. We further document that the decline in morality is caused by less guilt displayed toward new technologies. The non-human nature of the interaction evokes a decreased feeling of guilt and ultimately reduces moral behavior. These findings offer insights into how technological developments influence consumer behaviors and provide guidance for businesses and retailers in understanding moral intentions related to the different types of interactions in a shopping environment.

Crowding is a critical determinant of consumers' satisfaction with and preferences for different shopping and travel situations. When considering a selection of travel and hospitality options, travelers are influenced by perceived crowding. This research examined how the current health crisis (i.e., the COVID-19 pandemic) affects travelers' preferences for crowded and non-crowded options. Specifically, we predicted that travelers would have a diminished preference for crowded (vs. non-crowded) travel and hospitality options when the ongoing pandemic is salient. We demonstrated that the primary effect of the salience of the threat was persistent across different travel categories and contexts. We also found that travelers with high levels of sensation seeking and a high need for uniqueness show the opposite pattern, suggesting a possible recovery strategy from the pandemic. Five experimental studies provide several theoretical and managerial implications for travel and hospitality business marketers.

Which should people buy to make themselves happy: experiences or material goods? The answer depends in part on the level of resources already available in their lives. Across multiple studies using a range of methodologies, we found that individuals of higher social class, whose abundant resources make it possible to focus on self-development and self-expression, were made happier by experiential over material purchases. No such experiential advantage emerged for individuals of lower social class, whose lesser resources engender concern with resource management and wise use of limited finances. Instead, lower-class individuals were made happier from material purchases or were equally happy from experiential and material purchases.

Radiographic evaluation for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) often yields nonspecific findings. Bowel ultrasound (BUS) provides additional information beyond that of abdominal radiographs and may be helpful in the diagnosis of NEC in neonates. We systematically reviewed and aggregated existing literature to get a better estimate of diagnostic accuracy of BUS in the diagnosis of NEC. A literature search was performed using PubMed, Embase, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature to identify studies in which infants with clinically suspected NEC were evaluated using BUS. Studies that used modified Bell staging criteria as the reference standard were included. Study quality was assessed, and pooled sensitivity and specificity of various BUS findings for diagnosing NEC were determined. Six articles with a total of 462 patients met eligibility and inclusion criteria. There was heterogeneity in BUS findings evaluated across studies. Ultrasound detection of classic signs of NEC (portal venous gas, pneumatosis, and free air) had pooled sensitivities ranging from 0.27 to 0.48 and pooled specificities ranging from 0.91 to 0.99. Bowel wall thinning and absent peristalsis had overall low sensitivity (0.22 and 0.30) but high specificity (0.96 and 0.96) for NEC. Assessment of abdominal fluid, which included ascites and focal fluid collection, also had overall low sensitivity and high specificity (simple ascites: 0.45 and 0.92; focal fluid collection: 0.19 and 0.98). In summary, individual BUS findings have low sensitivity and high specificity for diagnosis of NEC. Bowel ultrasound may be a useful adjunct to plain abdominal radiographs in the evaluation of infants with clinical suspicion of NEC.

Rapid, inexpensive and simplistic nucleic acid testing (NAT) is pivotal in delivering biotechnology solutions at the point-of-care (POC). We present a poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) microdevice where on-board infrared-mediated PCR amplification is seamlessly integrated with a particle-based, visual DNA detection for specific detection of bacterial targets in less than 35 minutes. Fluidic control is achieved using a capillary burst valve laser-ablated in a novel manner to confine the PCR reagents to a chamber during thermal cycling, and a manual torque-actuated pressure system to mobilize the fluid from the PCR chamber to the detection reservoir containing oligonucleotide-adducted magnetic particles. Interaction of amplified products specific to the target organism with the beads in a rotating magnetic field allows for near instantaneous (<30 s) detection based on hybridization-induced aggregation (HIA) of the particles and simple optical analysis. The integration of PCR with this rapid, sequence-specific DNA detection method on a single microdevice presents the possibility of creating POC NAT systems that are low cost, easy-to-use, and involve minimal external hardware.

In a recent publication, we presented a label-free method for the detection of specific DNA sequences through the hybridization-induced aggregation (HIA) of a pair of oligonucleotide-adducted magnetic particles. Here we show, through the use of modified hardware, that we are able to simultaneously analyze multiple (4) samples, and detect a 26-mer ssDNA sequence at femtomolar concentrations in minutes. As such, this work represents an improvement in throughput and a 100-fold improvement in sensitivity, compared to that reported previously. Here, we also investigate the design parameters of the target sequence, in an effort to maximize the sensitivity of HIA and to use as a guide in future applications of this work. Modifications were made to the original 26-mer oligonucleotide sequence to evaluate the effects of: (1) non-complementary flanking bases, (2) target sequence length, and (3) single base mismatches on aggregation response. The aggregation response decreased as the number of the non-complementary flanking bases increased, with only a five base addition lowering the LOD by four orders of magnitude. Low sensitivity was observed with short sequences of 6 and 10 complementary bases, which were only detectable at micromolar concentrations. Target sequences with 20, 26 or 32 complementary bases provided the greatest sensitivity and were detectable at femtomolar concentrations. Additionally, HIA could effectively differentiate sequences that were fully complementary from those containing 1, 2 or 3 single base mismatches at micromolar concentrations. The robustness of the HIA system to other buffer components was explored with nine potential assay interferents that could affect hybridization (aggregation) or falsely induce aggregation. Of these, purified BSA and lysed whole blood induced a false aggregation. None of the interferents inhibited aggregation when the hybridizing target was added. Having delineated the fundamental parameters affecting HIA-target hybridization, and demonstrating that HIA had the selectivity to detect single base mismatches, this fluor-free end-point detection has the potential to become a powerful tool for microfluidic DNA detection.

Although electrical coupling via gap junctions is prevalent among ganglion cells in the vertebrate retina, there have been few direct studies of their influence on the light-evoked signaling of these cells. Here, we describe the pattern and function of coupling between the ON direction selective (DS) ganglion cells, a unique subtype whose signals are transmitted to the accessory optic system (AOS) where they initiate the optokinetic response. ON DS cells are coupled indirectly via gap junctions made with a subtype of polyaxonal amacrine cell. This coupling underlies synchronization of the spontaneous and light-evoked spike activity of neighboring ON DS cells. However, we find that ON DS cell pairs show robust synchrony for all directions of stimulus movement, except for the null direction. Null stimulus movement evokes a GABAergic inhibition that temporally shifts firing of ON DS cell neighbors, resulting in a desynchronization of spike activity. Thus, detection of null stimulus movement appears key to the direction selectivity of ON DS cells, evoking both an attenuation of spike frequency and a desynchronization of neighbors. We posit that active desynchronization reduces summation of synaptic potentials at target AOS cells and thus provides a secondary mechanism by which ON DS cell ensembles can signal direction of stimulus motion to the brain.
