RESUMO

Elastic waves involving mechanical particle motions of solid media can couple volumetric and shear deformations, making their manipulation more difficult than electromagnetic waves. Thereby, circularly polarized waves in the elastic regime have been little explored, unlike their counterparts in the electromagnetic regime, where their practical usage has been evidenced in various applications. Here, we explore generating perfect circular polarization of elastic waves in an isotropic solid medium. We devise a novel strategy for converting a linearly polarized wave into a circularly polarized wave by employing an anisotropic medium, which induces a so-far-unexplored coupled resonance phenomenon; it describes the simultaneous occurrence of the Fabry-Pérot resonance in one diagonal plane and the quarter-wave resonance in another diagonal plane orthogonal to the former with an exact 90° out-of-phase relation. We establish a theory explaining the involved physics and validate it numerically and experimentally. As a potential application of elastic circular polarization, we present simulation results demonstrating that a circularly polarized elastic wave can detect an arbitrarily oriented crack undetectable by a linearly polarized elastic wave.

RESUMO

This study proposes a non-enzymatic glucose sensor fabricated by synthesizing high-purity TiO2 nanoparticles in thermal plasma and depositing it directly on a substrate and then depositing chitosan-polypyrrole (CS-PPy) conductive polymer films by electrochemical method. The structural properties of the deposited TiO2 nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) system. The chemical composition and structural properties of the TiO2 nanoparticle layer and the conductive polymer films were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The glucose detection characteristics of the fabricated biosensor were determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV). CS-PPy/TiO2 biosensor showed high sensitivity of 302.0 µA mM-1 cm-2 (R2 = 0.9957) and low detection limit of 6.7 µM. The easily manufactured CS-PPy/TiO2 biosensor showed excellent selectivity and reactivity.

RESUMO

Concentrations of 17 trace metals bound in total suspended particulate (TSP) were measured at four urban residential locations (Jong Ro [JR], Gwang Jin [GJ], Gang Seo [GS], and Yang Jae [YJ]) in Seoul, Korea from February to July 2009. The maximum concentrations of metals were recorded by Fe in the range of 2599 (JR) to 2914 ng m(-3) (GJ), while the least values were observed from Ag or Co with a few ng m-3. The relative ordering of the mean concentration (ng m(-3)) at these sites is generally found on the order of Fe>Zn>Ba>Mn>Pb>Cu>B>Cr>Ni>Sr>V>As>Li>Cd>Mo>Co>Ag or with a few exceptions (e.g., a reversal between Ba and Mn or between Ni and Sr). Calculation of the enrichment factor suggests the significant role of man-made processes on such metals as Cd, Zn, and Pb. Inspection of the temporal patterns indicates the peak occurrence of most metals during the spring season due in part to the Asian Dust (AD) event. However, according to the factor analysis, sources of these metals were dominated by both resuspended soil/road dust and the combustion of fossil fuels. The overall results of our study suggest that the interaction between the environmental conditions and roadside traffic activities are paramount in explaining the metal pollution in these urban residential areas.
