Background: Serum indices (hemolysis, icterus, and lipemia; HIL) are known to impact clinical chemistry assay results. This study aimed to investigate the impact of HIL indices on serum metabolite profiles and the association of serum metabolite levels with pre-analytical factors of serum samples. Methods: A cohort of serum samples (n = 12,196) from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) was analyzed for HIL indices and the pre-analytical variables (SPRECs) which were generated in the process of serum collection. We further performed targeted metabolomics on a subset comprising hemolyzed (n = 60), icteric (n = 60), lipemic (n = 60) groups, and a common control group of non-HIL samples (n = 60) using the Absolute IDQ p180 kit. Results: We found 22 clinical chemistry analytes significantly associated with hemolysis, 25 with icterus, and 24 with lipemia (p < 0.0001). Serum metabolites (n = 27) were associated with all of hemolysis, icterus, and lipemia (p < 0.05). The PC ae C36 2 had exhibited a significant association with pre-analytical factors corresponding to the third (pre-centrifugation delay between processing) and sixth (post-centrifugation) elements of the SPREC. Conclusions: This study showed the association of the serum index and pre-analytical factors with serum metabolite profiles. In addition, the association of pre-analytical factors with serum metabolite concentrations would corroborate the utility of SPRECs for the quality control of biobanked serum samples.

Recently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been developed as therapeutic targets for various diseases. Biodistribution is crucial for EVs intended for therapeutic purposes because it can determine the degree of on- and off-target effects. This study aimed to explore techniques to evaluate the biodistribution of unmodified EVs. We devised a novel quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)-based assay to detect unmodified EVs by targeting mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid (mtDNA), a constituent of EVs. We focused on specific mtDNA regions that exhibited homologous variations distinct from their rodent mtDNA counterparts to establish this analytical approach. Herein, we successfully designed primers and probes targeting human and rodent mtDNA sequences and developed a highly specific and sensitive qPCR method. Furthermore, the quantification range of EVs isolated from various cells differed based on the manufacturer and cell source. IRDye 800CW-labelled Expi293F EV mimetics were administered to the animals via the tail vein to compare the imaging test and mtDNA-qPCR results. The results obtained from imaging tests and mtDNA-qPCR to investigate EV biodistribution patterns revealed differences. The results revealed that our newly developed method effectively determined the biodistribution of unmodified EVs with high sensitivity and reproducibility.

Animals can use a repertoire of strategies to navigate in an environment, and it remains an intriguing question how these strategies are selected based on the nature and familiarity of environments. To investigate this question, we developed a fully automated variant of the Barnes maze, characterized by 24 vestibules distributed along the periphery of a circular arena, and monitored the trajectories of mice over 15 days as they learned to navigate towards a goal vestibule from a random start vestibule. We show that the patterns of vestibule visits can be reproduced by the combination of three stochastic processes reminiscent of random, serial, and spatial strategies. The processes randomly selected vestibules based on either uniform (random) or biased (serial and spatial) probability distributions. They closely matched experimental data across a range of statistical distributions characterizing the length, distribution, step size, direction, and stereotypy of vestibule sequences, revealing a shift from random to spatial and serial strategies over time, with a strategy switch occurring approximately every six vestibule visits. Our study provides a novel apparatus and analysis toolset for tracking the repertoire of navigation strategies and demonstrates that a set of stochastic processes can largely account for exploration patterns in the Barnes maze.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is a relative lack of detailed reports regarding clinical presentation and outcome of idiopathic intracranial hypertension in Asians. This study aims to describe the clinical features and treatment outcomes of Korean patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension. METHODS: We prospectively recruited patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension from one hospital and retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 11 hospitals in Korea. We collected data regarding preceding medical conditions or suspected medication exposure, headache phenotypes, other associated symptoms, detailed neuroimaging findings, treatments, and outcomes after 1-2 and 3-6 months of treatment. RESULTS: Fifty-nine (83.1% women) patients were included. The mean body mass index was 29.11 (standard deviation, 5.87) kg/m2; only 27 patients (45.8%) had a body mass index of ≥ 30 kg/m2. Fifty-one (86.4%) patients experienced headaches, patterns of which included chronic migraine (15/51 [29.4%]), episodic migraine (8/51 [15.7%]), probable migraine (4/51 [7.8%]), chronic tension-type headache (3/51 [5.9%]), episodic tension-type headache (2/51 [3.9%]), probable tension-type headache (2/51 [3.9%]), and unclassified (17/51 [33.3%]). Medication overuse headache was diagnosed in 4/51 (7.8%) patients. After 3-6 months of treatment, the intracranial pressure normalized in 8/32 (25.0%), improved in 17/32 (53.1%), no changed in 7/32 (21.9%), and worsened in none. Over the same period, headaches remitted or significantly improved by more than 50% in 24/39 patients (61.5%), improved less than 50% in 9/39 (23.1%), and persisted or worsened in 6/39 (15.4%) patients. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the features of Asian patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension may be atypical (i.e., less likely obese, less female predominance). A wide spectrum of headache phenotypes was observed. Medical treatment resulted in overall favorable short-term outcomes; however, the headaches did not improve in a small proportion of patients.

Two vestibular signals, rotational and inertial cues, converge for the perception of complex motion. However, how vestibular perception is built on neuronal behaviors and decision-making processes, especially during the simultaneous presentation of rotational and inertial cues, has yet to be elucidated in humans. In this study, we analyzed the perceptual responses of 20 participants after pairwise rotational experiments, comprised of four control and four test sessions. In both control and test sessions, participants underwent clockwise and counterclockwise rotations in head-down and head-up positions. The difference between the control and test sessions was the head re-orientation relative to gravity after rotations, thereby providing only rotational cues in the control sessions and both rotational and inertial cues in the test sessions. The accuracy of perceptual responses was calculated by comparing the direction of rotational and inertial cues acquired from participants with that predicted by the velocity-storage model. The results showed that the accuracy of rotational perception ranged from 80 to 95% in the four control sessions but significantly decreased to 35 to 75% in the four test sessions. The accuracy of inertial perception in the test sessions ranged from 50 to 70%. The accuracy of rotational perception improved with repetitive exposure to the simultaneous presentation of both rotational and inertial cues, while the accuracy of inertial perception remained steady. The results suggested a significant interaction between rotational and inertial perception and implied that vestibular perception acquired in patients with vestibular disorders are potentially inaccurate.

Chromatin is organized into compartments enriched with functionally-related proteins driving non-linear biochemical activities. Some compartments, e.g. transcription foci, behave as liquid condensates. While the principles governing the enrichment of proteins within condensates are being elucidated, mechanisms that coordinate condensate dynamics with other nuclear processes like DNA replication have not been identified. We show that at the G1/S cell cycle transition, large transcription condensates form at histone locus bodies (HLBs) in a cyclin-dependent kinase 1 and 2 (CDK1/2)-dependent manner. As cells progress through S phase, ataxia-telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR) accumulates within HLBs and dissolves the associated transcription condensates. Integration of CDK1/2 and ATR signaling creates a phosphorylation code within the intrinsically-disordered region of mediator subunit 1 (MED1) coordinating condensate dynamics with DNA replication. Disruption of this code results in imbalanced histone biosynthesis, and consequently, global DNA damage. We propose the spatiotemporal dynamics of transcription condensates are actively controlled via phosphorylation and essential for viability of proliferating cells.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how music group facilitators work across the health-care continuum has received sparse research attention. METHODS: An explanatory multiple case study design was used to identify approaches employed by experienced facilitators. Five music facilitators working in contrasting areas of practice were interviewed and video recorded engaging with the same groups at three timepoints. RESULTS: All facilitators demonstrated four common behaviours: applying a consistent structure for each session; creating a positive and relaxing atmosphere for the work; engaging with varying musical repertoire and activities; and offering clear instructions for the participants. Their styles of practice were found to be shaped by their personality, educational background, as well as the size of the group, health conditions, and cultural identities of their music participants. CONCLUSION: These skilled facilitators showed flexibility, always aiming to accommodate participants' needs, and revealing new evidence of a common approach to music facilitation across different types of participant groups.

Background and purpose: Customized vestibular rehabilitation improved dizziness and imbalance in several randomized controlled trials. In the present study, we determined the efficacy of customized vestibular rehabilitation using real-world observational data. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we recruited 64 patients (median age = 60, interquartile range = 48-66.3) who completed the customized vestibular rehabilitation from January to December 2022. The outcomes of rehabilitation were evaluated using the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) or vestibular disorders activities of daily living scale (VADL). The factors associated with outcomes were assessed with a generalized linear model, of which covariates included patients' age, sex, duration of illness, type of vestibular disorders, initial DHI and VADL scores, exercise compliance, and initial hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) scores. Results: After the median of 6 (4-6) weeks of rehabilitation, DHI and VADL scores significantly improved in patients with either peripheral or central vestibular disorders (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p < 0.05). The initial DHI and VADL scores showed a positive while the sum of HADS scores showed a negative correlation with the outcome. In contrast, the age, sex, duration of illness, types of vestibular disorders, and exercise compliance did not affect the outcome. Discussion and conclusion: Customized vestibular rehabilitation is effective for central as well as peripheral disorders, especially when the symptoms are severe and the psychological distress is mild.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a major cause of morbidity in premature infants. However, effective treatment options for NEC are currently lacking. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the optimal dose of intraperitoneally administered bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and investigate the therapeutic potential of orally administered BM-MSCs in NEC. METHODS: Neonatal mice were fed maternal breast milk for the first 2 days of life. On day 3, the neonatal mice were randomly divided into control, negative control, and BM-MSC-treated groups. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was administered for 3 days, and cold stress (4°C, 10 minutes) was applied 3 times a day to induce NEC. High-dose (1×106 cells) or low-dose (1×105 cells) BM-MSCs were administered intraperitoneally 1 or 3 times between days 6 and 8 to treat the NEC. The orally administered group received a low dose of BM-MSCs on day 6. Furthermore, except for the control group, intraepithelial cells (IECs) of the small intestine of neonatal mice were treated with LPS and exposed to 5% O2/95% N2 hypoxic stress for 2 hours. Thereafter, each was treated with BM-MSCs. RESULTS: Tissue injury, apoptosis, and inflammatory marker levels were significantly reduced after BM-MSC administration. Oral administration was as effective as intraperitoneal administration, even at a low dose (1×105 cells) of BM-MSCs. The efficacy of high (1×106 cells) or multiple divided doses of BM-MSCs did not differ from that of low-dose treatment. Significantly improved wound healing was observed after BM-MSC administration to injured IECs. CONCLUSION: The oral administration of BM-MSCs is a promising treatment option for NEC in infants. Further human studies of BM-MSCs are necessary to determine the optimal dose required to achieve safe and effective outcomes.

Diblock copolymer (dBCP) particles capable of dynamic shape and color changes have gained significant attention due to their versatility in programmable shapes and intricate nanostructures. However, their application in photonic systems remains limited due to challenges in achieving a sufficient number of defect-free photonic layers over a tens-of-micrometer scale. In this study, we present a pioneering demonstration of photonic dBCP particles featuring over 300 axially stacked photonic layers with responsive color- and shape-transforming capabilities. Our approach leverages the complex interplay between the macrophase separation of multiple incompatible components and the microphase separation of dBCP from solvent-evaporative microemulsions. Specifically, continuous phase separation of silicone oil from polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP), triggered by solvent evaporation, promotes the anisotropic growth of PS-b-P2VP layers. This results in the formation of Janus colloids, where an oil droplet merges with a nanostructured polymer cone and lamellar structures align along the long axis of the cone. We highlight the capability to precisely adjust the particle morphology and the corresponding orientation, dispersion, and structural color window by modulating both the molecular weight of PS-b-P2VP and the volume ratio between PS-b-P2VP and silicone oil. Furthermore, reversible swelling/deswelling of photonic colloids is visualized and correlated with their structural colors. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of this study by presenting a multicolor-patterned array of photonic colloids, highlighting the possibilities for applications in smart photonic ink and devices.

Although advances in neonatology have reduced the mortality rate of high-risk infants, sick newborns or pre-mature infants undergo more intensive monitoring, pain-ful procedures, and lengthy hospitalization, leading to pro-longed separation from their parents. In recent decades, the importance of parent-infant closeness early in life has become more apparent, especially in preterm infants who are prone to neurodevelopmental deficits. There is an increasing body of evidence regarding the benefits of family-centered care (FCC) in neonatal intensive care units. Key aspects related to neonatal FCC include the parents' presence in the ward and their participation in infants' daily care and decision-making processes. In addition, an environment that supports a private and comfortable space for each family member and infant, such as a single-family room, should be provided. To successfully implement FCC in neonatal intensive care units, the culture of care and hospital policies should be changed to successfully implement FCC in neonatal intensive care units, and appropriate training for medical staff is also required.

Highly anisotropic-shaped particles with well-ordered internal nanostructures have received significant attention due to their unique shape-dependent photonic, rheological, and electronic properties and packing structures. In this work, nanosheet particles with cylindrical block copolymer (BCP) arrays are achieved by utilizing collapsed emulsions as a scaffold for BCP self-assembly. Highly elongated structures with large surface areas are formed by employing crystallizable surfactants that significantly reduce the interfacial tension of BCP emulsions. Subsequently, the stabilized elongated emulsion structures lead to the formation of BCP nanosheets. Specifically, when polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) and 1-octadecanol (C18-OH) are co-assembled within an emulsion, C18-OH penetrates the surfactant layer at the emulsion interface, lowering the interfacial tension (i.e., below 1 mN m-1 ) and causing emulsion deformation. In addition, C18-OH crystallization allows for kinetic arrest of the collapsed emulsion shape during solvent evaporation. Consequently, PS-b-PDMS BCPs self-assemble into defect-free structures within nanosheet particles, exhibiting an exceptionally high aspect ratio of over 50. The particle formation mechanism is further investigated by controlling the alkyl chain length of the fatty alcohol. Finally, the coating behavior of nanosheet particles is investigated, revealing that the deposition pattern on a substrate is strongly influenced by the particle's shape anisotropy, thus highlighting their potential for advanced coating applications.

This article examines preparatory labor practices that South Korean farmers had to undertake to use chemical fertilizers in the 1960s. Preparatory labor, such as learning about and acquiring fertilizers, that came prior to the use of chemical fertilizer in the field was mundane and often invisible. However, it was this logistical and emotional labor that was essential for the maintenance of South Korea's chemical fertilizer system. In the system, which was part of the government's efforts to establish rural modernity through increased crop productivity, the state looked down on farmers as the subject of edification. Nevertheless, the farmers were crucial maintainers of the state-led agricultural reform, realizing the government's vision of modernity. To reveal the hidden relationship between farmers, technology, and the state, this article extensively uses diaries written by two farmers - Yoon Heesoo from Daecheon Village and Shin Kwonsik from Daegok Village. By doing so, this article aims to shed light on the voices of farmers and their roles in the agricultural reform of 1960s South Korea and, more broadly, of the Green Revolution.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the factors influencing the supportive care needs of survivors of breast cancer who have completed major treatment. Methods: A total of 121 survivors of breast cancer from an online community in South Korea participated in this study. The study variables were supportive care needs, physical symptoms, anxiety, and depression. Independent t-tests, one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression analyses were performed. Results: The highest rankings of supportive care needs of survivors of breast cancer were medical system and information needs, patient care and support needs, psychological needs, sexual needs, and physical and daily life needs. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that the participants' supportive care needs were explained by physical symptoms (P â€‹< â€‹0.001) and anxiety (P â€‹< â€‹0.001), accounting for 52.1% of the variance. Conclusions: Supportive care needs of survivors of breast cancer have a high level of medical system and information needs, and posttreatment conditions are related to high physical symptoms and anxiety. In the future, it will be necessary to identify supportive care needs and apply interventions to reduce their physical symptoms and anxiety.

AIMS: Diet and nutrition are important aspects of skin physiology and health. However, the influence of diet on the bacterial flora of different skin sites is not well understood. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between dietary patterns (DPs) and skin bacterial flora on the forearm (a dry site) and the neck (a sebaceous site) of healthy Korean adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: In metagenomics analysis, Shannon and Simpson indices were higher on the forearm than on the neck and were negatively correlated with the two dominant species, Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, on two skin sites. In addition, the Simpson index of the forearm was positively associated with DP1 (characterized by a high intake of vegetables, mushrooms, meat, fish and shellfish, seaweed, and fat and oil), while that on the neck was negatively associated with DP2 (characterized by a high intake of fast food). A high intake of DP1 was associated with a lower abundance of dominant species, including C. acnes, and higher degrees of the co-occurrence network, whereas a high intake of DP2 was associated with the opposite pattern. CONCLUSIONS: Specific diets may impact both skin bacterial diversity and composition, as well as the co-occurrence of bacteria, which may vary across different skin sites.

Non-invasive early detection and differentiation grading of lung adenocarcinoma using computed tomography (CT) images are clinically important for both clinicians and patients, including determining the extent of lung resection. However, these are difficult to accomplish using preoperative images, with CT-based diagnoses often being different from postoperative pathologic diagnoses. In this study, we proposed an integrated detection and classification algorithm (IDCal) for diagnosing ground-glass opacity nodules (GGN) using CT images and other patient informatics, and compared its performance with that of other diagnostic modalities. All labeling was confirmed by a thoracic surgeon by referring to the patient's CT image and biopsy report. The detection phase was implemented via a modified FC-DenseNet to contour the lesions as elaborately as possible and secure the reliability of the classification phase for subsequent applications. Then, by integrating radiomics features and other patients' general information, the lesions were dichotomously reclassified into "non-invasive" (atypical adenomatous hyperplasia, adenocarcinoma in situ, and minimally invasive adenocarcinoma) and "invasive" (invasive adenocarcinoma). Data from 168 GGN cases were used to develop the IDCal, which was then validated in 31 independent CT scans. IDCal showed a high accuracy of GGN detection (sensitivity, 0.970; false discovery rate, 0.697) and classification (accuracy, 0.97; f1-score, 0.98; ROAUC, 0.96). In conclusion, the proposed IDCal detects and classifies GGN with excellent performance. Thus, it can be suggested that our multimodal prediction model has high potential as an auxiliary diagnostic tool of GGN to help clinicians.

This study examined the significance of digital citizenship and gender in the relationship between social media usage time and self-esteem among adolescents. This cross-sectional study was a secondary analysis using national data on 506 Korean adolescents acquired from the 2020 Korea Media Panel Survey. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and SPSS PROCESS macro. We found that the moderated moderating effects of digital citizenship and gender on the relationship between social media usage time and self-esteem were significant. Both boys and girls had higher self-esteem in groups with higher digital citizenship than in groups with lower digital citizenship. The relationship between social media usage time and self-esteem for boys was positive in the high digital citizenship group and negative in the low digital citizenship group. Conversely, for girls, the relationship between social media usage time and self-esteem was positive in the low digital citizenship group and negative in the high digital citizenship group. It is important to take a differentiated approach that considers the relationship between digital citizenship and gender to promote healthy digital media use and positive self-esteem.

To enhance the vaccination rate of adolescents against HPV, understanding their current vaccination intentions and identifying the factors that influence their decision to vaccinate are imperative. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used to search for relative literature. Five electronic databases (CINAHL, PubMed, Web of science, Research Information Sharing Service (RISS) and Korea Citation Index (KCI)) were searched from 2007 to 2022, and 19 studies were selected for final review. The Mixed Methods Assessment Tool (MMAT) was used as a critical appraisal tool to evaluate the quality for various types of research designs. This integrative review revealed three themes, including facilitators (personal characteristics and environmental factors), barriers (lack of awareness and knowledge about HPV, concerns about side effects, and the burden of costs), and ways to increase vaccination uptake (knowledge promotion and HPV vaccines coverage by public insurance). To encourage HPV vaccine uptake, it is essential to enhance public knowledge, create compelling advertisements, and ensure that the vaccines are covered by public insurance. Moreover, providing educational programs that emphasize the effectiveness and significance of HPV vaccines to adults who can influence the vaccination decisions of adolescents is vital.

This study examined the moderated mediation effect of poverty on the paths between enactive mastery experience in digital life and life satisfaction mediated by digital citizenship and digital life among Korean adolescents using structural equation modelling. This cross-sectional study involved a secondary data analysis of 2020 national data in The Report on the Digital Divide provided by the National Information Society Agency (NIA) of Korea. Data from 1084 Korean adolescents were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 26.0 and SPSS PROCESS macro. The results demonstrated a significant moderated mediation effect of poverty. Enactive mastery experience, which encompasses the self-knowledge, perceived task difficulty, and contextual factors of adolescents living in poverty, was associated with digital life and life satisfaction through the mediation of digital citizenship. For adolescents living in poverty, in contrast to their non-poor counterparts, enactive mastery experience in digital life and digital citizenship are two critical factors in life satisfaction. Therefore, institutional support enabling adolescents and their communities to forge partnerships is necessary to foster these two factors.
