RESUMO

Collagen is considered to be an intercellular adhesive that prevents tissue stretching or damage. It is widely utilized in cosmetic skin solutions, drug delivery, vitreous substitutions, 3D cell cultures, and surgery. In this study, we report the development of a green technology for manufacturing collagen peptides from flatfish skin using ultrasound and enzymatic treatment and a subsequent assessment on skin functionality. First, flatfish skin was extracted using ultrasound in distilled water (DW) for 6 h at 80 °C. Molecular weight analysis via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after treatment with industrial enzymes (alcalase, papain, protamex, and flavourzyme) showed that the smallest molecular weight (3.56 kDa) was achieved by adding papain (0.5% for 2 h). To determine functionality based on peptide molecular weight, two fractions of 1100 Da and 468 Da were obtained through separation using Sephadex™ G-10. We evaluated the effects of these peptides on protection against oxidative stress in human keratinocytes (HaCaT) cells, inhibition of MMP-1 expression in human dermal fibroblast (HDF) cells, reduction in melanin content, and the inhibition of tyrosinase enzyme activity in murine melanoma (B16F10) cells. These results demonstrate that the isolated low-molecular-weight peptides exhibit superior skin anti-oxidant, anti-wrinkle, and whitening properties.

As COVID-19 has become endemic, SARS-CoV-2 variants are becoming increasingly diverse, underscoring the escalating importance of global genomic surveillance. This study analyzed 86,762 COVID-19 samples identified in the Republic of Korea from September 2022 to November 2023. The results revealed a consistent increase in the prevalence of the XBB variants following the dominance of BN.1, with various XBB sub-lineages co-circulating in the Republic of Korea. The overall nucleotide diversity (π) among the SARS-CoV-2 genomes was 0.00155. Evolutionary analysis revealed that the average time interval between the first detection and estimated date of the most recent common ancestor of Korean XBB sub-lineages was 47 d, suggesting that the novel variants were efficiently identified in the Korean surveillance system. The mutation rate was determined to be in the range of 5.6 × 10-4 to 9.1 × 10-4 substitutions/site/year. In conclusion, this study provides insights into the genetic diversity and evolutionary interpretation of the XBB sub-lineages during the XBB wave in the Republic of Korea, highlighting the importance of continued genomic surveillance for emerging variants.

The prevalence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) viruses has increased in wild birds and poultry worldwide, and concomitant outbreaks in mammals have occurred. During 2023, outbreaks of HPAI H5N1 virus infections were reported in cats in South Korea. The H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b viruses isolated from 2 cats harbored mutations in the polymerase basic protein 2 gene encoding single amino acid substitutions E627K or D701N, which are associated with virus adaptation in mammals. Hence, we analyzed the pathogenicity and transmission of the cat-derived H5N1 viruses in other mammals. Both isolates caused fatal infections in mice and ferrets. We observed contact infections between ferrets, confirming the viruses had high pathogenicity and transmission in mammals. Most HPAI H5N1 virus infections in humans have occurred through direct contact with poultry or a contaminated environment. Therefore, One Health surveillance of mammals, wild birds, and poultry is needed to prevent potential zoonotic threats.

OBJECTIVE: Mitotically active cellular fibroma (MACF) of the ovary, characterized by relatively high mitotic activity without severe atypia, was first described in the WHO classification in 2014. However, due to its rarity, the clinicopathological characteristics of ovarian MACF have not been established. This study was performed to describe the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of MACF by analyzing 11 cases of ovarian MACF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2015 and 2022, 11 patients with ovarian MACFs underwent surgical treatment at our institution. Clinicopathologic data of the patients were retrospectively reviewed from their medical records. RESULTS: Median patient age was 53.7 years (range 21-77 years), and median tumor diameter was 7.8 cm (range 4.3-14.0 cm). Preoperative CA125 was elevated in 4 cases. Four of the eleven patients had abdominal pain, and two presented with vulvar pain or a palpable abdominal mass, respectively. Preoperative radiological impressions included fibroma, fibrothecoma, stromal tumor, and cystadenocarcinoma. A laparoscopic approach was adopted in 7 cases (64%). Intraoperative frozen section was performed in 5 patients, and all demonstrated the presence of a benign, fibromatous stromal tumor. Three patients underwent fertility-sparing surgery, including laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy and unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Median follow-up was 37.7 months (range 2-84 months), and no patient experienced disease relapse or died of their disease. CONCLUSION: This study shows that ovarian MACF has a benign clinical course. Fertility-sparing surgery provides a safe therapeutic option for MACF, which can be managed safely by laparoscopy. Imaging findings and final pathological diagnosis were not well matched. Intraoperative frozen section is important for determining surgical extent in mitotically active cellular fibroma of the ovary.

Introduction: Tularemia, caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis, poses health risks to humans and can spread through a variety of routes. It has also been classified as a Tier 1 Select agent by the CDC, highlighting its potential as a bioterrorism agent. Moreover, it is difficult to diagnose in a timely fashion, owing to the non-specific nature of tularemia infections. Rapid, sensitive, and accurate detection methods are required to reduce mortality rates. We aimed to develop antibodies directed against the outer membrane protein A of F. tularensis (FopA) for rapid and accurate diagnosis of tularemia. Methods: We used a baculovirus insect cell expression vector system to produce the FopA antigen and generate anti-FopA antibodies through immunization of BALB/c mice. We then employed hybridoma and phage display technologies to screen for antibodies that could recognize unique epitopes on FopA. Result: Two monoclonal antibodies, 6B12 and 3C1, identified through phage display screening specifically bound to recombinant FopA in a dose-dependent manner. The binding affinity of the anti-FopA 6B12 and 3C1 antibodies was observed to have an equilibrium dissociation constant of 1.76 × 10-10 M and 1.32 × 10-9 M, respectively. These antibodies were used to develop a sandwich ELISA system for the diagnosis of tularemia. This assay was found to be highly specific and sensitive, with detection limits ranging from 0.062 ng/mL in PBS to 0.064 ng/mL in skim milk matrices. Discussion: Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of a novel diagnostic approach for detecting F. tularensis based on targeting FopA, as opposed to existing tests that target the bacterial lipopolysaccharide.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To evaluate the radiomics-based model performance for differentiation between glioblastoma (GB) and brain metastases (BM) using magnetization prepared rapid gradient echo (MPRAGE) and volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) T1-contrast enhanced sequences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: T1-CE MPRAGE and VIBE sequences acquired in 108 patients (31 GBs and 77 BM) during the same MRI session were retrospectively evaluated. Post standardized image pre-processing and segmentation, radiomics features were extracted from necrotic and enhancing tumor components. Pearson correlation analysis of radiomics features from tumor subcomponents was also performed. A total of 90 machine learning (ML) pipelines were evaluated using a five-fold cross validation. Performance was measured by mean AUC-ROC, Log-loss and Brier scores. RESULTS: A feature-wise comparison showed that the radiomic features between sequences were strongly correlated, with the highest correlation for shape-based features. The mean AUC across the top-ten pipelines ranged between 0.851-0.890 with T1-CE MPRAGE and between 0.869-0.907 with T1-CE VIBE sequence. Top performing models for the MPRAGE sequence commonly used support vector machines, while those for VIBE sequence used either support vector machines or random forest. Common feature reduction methods for top-performing models included linear combination filter and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) for both sequences. For the same ML-feature reduction pipeline, model performances were comparable (AUC-ROC difference range: [-0.078, 0.046]). CONCLUSIONS: Radiomic features derived from T1-CE MPRAGE and VIBE sequences are strongly correlated and may have similar overall classification performance for differentiating GB from BM. INTRODUCTION: Patient safety has become a fundamental element of healthcare quality. However, despite the ongoing efforts of various organisations, patient safety issues remain a problem in the healthcare system. Given the crucial role of nurses in the healthcare process, improving patient safety competence among clinical nurses is important. In order to promote patient safety competence, it is essential to identify and strengthen the relevant factors. This protocol is for a systematic review aiming to examine and categorise the factors influencing patient safety competence among clinical nurses. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This review protocol is based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Methodology for Systematic Reviews of Effectiveness and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols. Four electronic databases, including Ovid-MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and EMBASE, will be used for the systematic review. After consulting with a medical librarian, we designed our search terms to include subject heading terms and related terms in the titles and abstracts. Databases from January 2012 to August 2023 will be searched.Two reviewers will independently conduct the search and extract data including the author(s), country, study design, sample size, clinical setting, clinical experience, tool used to measure patient safety competence and factors affecting patient safety competence. The quality of the included studies will be assessed using the JBI critical appraisal tool. Because heterogeneity of the results is anticipated, the data will be narratively synthesised and divided into two categories: individual and organisational factors. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical review is not relevant to this study. The findings will be presented at professional conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. Biological weapons, primarily dispersed as aerosols, can spread not only to the targeted area but also to adjacent regions following the movement of air driven by wind. Thus, there is a growing demand for toxin analysis because biological weapons are among the most influential and destructive. Specifically, such a technique should be hand-held, rapid, and easy to use because current methods require more time and well-trained personnel. Our study demonstrates the use of a novel lateral flow immunoassay, which has a confined structure like a double barbell in the detection area (so called c-LFA) for toxin detection such as staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB), ricinus communis (Ricin), and botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A). Additionally, we have explored the integration of machine learning (ML), specifically, a toxin chip boosting (TOCBoost) hybrid algorithm for improved sensitivity and specificity. Consequently, the ML powered c-LFA concurrently categorized three biological toxin types with an average accuracy as high as 95.5%. To our knowledge, the sensor proposed in this study is the first attempt to utilize ML for the assessment of toxins. The advent of the c-LFA orchestrated a paradigm shift by furnishing a versatile and robust platform for the rapid, on-site detection of various toxins, including SEB, Ricin, and BoNT-A. Our platform enables accessible and on-site toxin monitoring for non-experts and can potentially be applied to biosecurity.

Aberrant mitochondrial fission/fusion dynamics are frequently associated with pathologies, including cancer. We show that alternative splice variants of the fission protein Drp1 (DNM1L) contribute to the complexity of mitochondrial fission/fusion regulation in tumor cells. High tumor expression of the Drp1 alternative splice variant lacking exon 16 relative to other transcripts is associated with poor outcome in ovarian cancer patients. Lack of exon 16 results in Drp1 localization to microtubules and decreased association with mitochondrial fission sites, culminating in fused mitochondrial networks, enhanced respiration, changes in metabolism, and enhanced pro-tumorigenic phenotypes in vitro and in vivo. These effects are inhibited by siRNAs designed to specifically target the endogenously expressed transcript lacking exon 16. Moreover, lack of exon 16 abrogates mitochondrial fission in response to pro-apoptotic stimuli and leads to decreased sensitivity to chemotherapeutics. These data emphasize the pathophysiological importance of Drp1 alternative splicing, highlight the divergent functions and consequences of changing the relative expression of Drp1 splice variants in tumor cells, and strongly warrant consideration of alternative splicing in future studies focused on Drp1.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a promising biomaterial rich in bioactive growth factors, offering potential as a therapeutic agent for various diseases. However, its effectiveness in central nervous system disorders like vascular dementia (VaD) remains underexplored. This study investigated the potential of PRP to mitigate VaD progression in vivo. A rat model of VaD was established via bilateral common carotid artery occlusion and hypovolemia operation. Rats were randomly assigned to receive either PRP or platelet-poor plasma (PPP)-the latter being a byproduct of PRP preparation and used as a reference standard-resulting in the groups designated as 'operated group (OP)+PRP' and 'OP+PPP', respectively. PRP or PPP (500 µl) was administered intraperitoneally on the day of the operation and postoperative days 2, 4, 6, and 8. Cognitive function was assessed using the Y-maze, Barnes maze, and passive avoidance tests. On postoperative day 8, hippocampal samples were subjected to histological and semi-quantitative analyses. OP exhibited significant memory decline compared to controls, while the 'OP+PRP' group showed notable improvement. Histological analysis revealed increased neuronal loss and neuroinflammation in OP hippocampi, mitigated in 'OP+PRP'. Semi-quantitative analysis showed decreased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) in OP, restored in 'OP+PPP' and further in 'OP+PRP'. These results highlight PRP's protective effects against VaD-induced hippocampal damage and cognitive impairment, partially attributed to BDNF/TrkB pathway upregulation.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of ultrasound-guided high-dose Shinbaro 2 pharmacopuncture on the pain, dysfunction, and quality of life in patients with low back pain and radiating pain due to an acute herniated intervertebral disc (HIVD). A 39-year-old male patient with low back pain and radiating pain caused by an acute HIVD was treated with Korean and Western integrative medicine, with a focus on ultrasound-guided high-dose Shinbaro 2 pharmacopuncture at Kambin's triangle. The treatment lasted 16 weeks, including a 12-day hospitalization. The low back pain and radiating pain were evaluated using the numeric rating scale (NRS). The lumbar function and quality of life were assessed using the Oswestry disability index (ODI) and the EuroQol five-dimension index (EQ5D). Satisfaction was gauged using the patient global impression of change (PGIC). After treatment, the NRS score decreased from 10 to 1, whereas the ODI and EQ5D scores improved from 84.44 to 28.89 and from 0.303 to 0.871, respectively. The PGIC was rated as 1, indicating considerable improvement. Notably, the changes observed during hospitalization were significant. This report suggests that ultrasound-guided high-dose Shinbaro 2 pharmacopuncture at Kambin's triangle significantly improves the pain, dysfunction, and quality of life in patients with an acute HIVD, demonstrating its potential usefulness among Korean medicine practitioners.

PURPOSE: Breath-held fat-suppressed volumetric T1-weighted MRI is an important and widely-used technique for evaluating the abdomen. Both fat-saturation and Dixon-based fat-suppression methods are used at conventional field strengths; however, both have challenges at lower field strengths (<1.5T) due to insufficient fat suppression and/or inadequate resolution. Specifically, at lower field strengths, fat saturation often fails due to the short T1 of lipid; and Cartesian Dixon imaging provides poor spatial resolution due to the need for a long ΔTE, due to the smaller Δf between water and lipid. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate a new approach capable of simultaneously achieving excellent fat suppression and high spatial resolution on a 0.55T whole-body system. METHODS: We applied 3D stack-of-spirals Dixon imaging at 0.55T, with compensation of concomitant field phase during reconstruction. The spiral readouts make efficient use of the requisite ΔTE. We compared this with 3D Cartesian Dixon imaging. Experiments were performed in 2 healthy and 10 elevated liver fat volunteers. RESULTS: Stack-of-spirals Dixon imaging at 0.55T makes excellent use of the required ΔTE, provided high SNR efficiency and finer spatial resolution (1.7 × 1.7 × 5 mm3) compared Cartesian Dixon (3.5 × 3.5 × 5 mm3), within a 17-s breath-hold. We observed successful fat suppression, and improved definition of structures such as the liver, kidneys, and bowel. CONCLUSION: We demonstrate that high-resolution single breath-hold volumetric abdominal T1-weighted imaging is feasible at 0.55T using spiral sampling and concomitant field correction. This is an attractive alternative to existing Cartesian-based methods, as it simultaneously provides high-resolution and excellent fat-suppression.

The adenovirus detection rate is <10% throughout the year in South Korea; however, during the summer of 2023, it showed an unusual increase. We analyzed the adenovirus detection rate using data from the Korea Respiratory Integrated Surveillance System before and after coronavirus disease (COVID-19) collected from 2019 to week 36 of 2023. Before the COVID-19 outbreak in 2019, the mean detection rate was 8.2%, which decreased to 6.1% during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022. In 2023, the mean detection rate was 14.3% in week 36 and the highest in week 34, at 42.2%, and adenovirus was predominantly detected in the summer. The detection rate by age group showed substantially high activity among 0-12-yr-olds after the pandemic. This age group had a steady mean rate of 9.5% during the pandemic, without seasonality. In 2023, the detection rate surged in the 0-6-yr and 7-12-yr age groups, peaking at 61.6% and 57.1%, respectively. The dominant epidemic serotypes were HAdV-1 and HAdV-2 during and HAdV-3 after the pandemic. The multifaceted non-pharmaceutical interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic considerably impacted the prevalence of common respiratory viruses and complicated respiratory virus patterns after the pandemic. Constant surveillance is crucial for epidemic preparedness to monitor the possible surge of certain respiratory viruses.

Using conventional immunoglobulin G (IgG) molecules as therapeutic agents presents several well-known disadvantages owing to their large size and structural complexity, negatively impacting development and production efficiency. Single-domain antibodies (sdAbs) are the smallest functional antibody format (~ 15 kDa) and represent a viable alternative to IgG in many applications. However, unlike natural single-domain antibodies, such as camelid VHH, the variable domains of conventional antibodies show poor physicochemical properties when expressed as sdAbs. This report identified stable sdAb variants of human VH3-23 from a framework region 2-randomized human VH library by phage display selection under thermal challenge. Synthetic complementarity determining region diversity was introduced to one of the selected variants with high thermal stability, expression level, and monomeric content to construct a human VH sdAb library. The library was validated by panning against a panel of antigens, and target-specific binders were identified and characterized for their affinity and biophysical properties. The results of this study suggest that a synthetic sdAb library based on a stability-engineered human VH scaffold could be a facile source of high-quality sdAb for many practical applications.

Clinical trials frequently include multiple end points that mature at different times. The initial report, typically based on the primary end point, may be published when key planned co-primary or secondary analyses are not yet available. Clinical Trial Updates provide an opportunity to disseminate additional results from studies, published in JCO or elsewhere, for which the primary end point has already been reported.The phase III PRODIGY study demonstrated that neoadjuvant chemotherapy with docetaxel, oxaliplatin, and S-1 (DOS) followed by surgery and adjuvant S-1 chemotherapy (CSC) improved progression-free survival (PFS) compared with surgery followed by adjuvant S-1 (SC) for patients with resectable locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) with clinical T2-3N+ or T4Nany disease. The primary end point was PFS. Overall survival (OS) was the secondary end point. We herein report the long-term follow-up outcomes, including OS, from this trial. A total of 238 and 246 patients were randomly assigned to the CSC and SC arms, respectively, and were treated (full analysis set). As of the data cutoff (September 2022), the median follow-up duration of the surviving patients was 99.5 months. Compared with SC, CSC significantly increased the OS (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 0.72; stratified log-rank P = .027) with an 8-year OS rate of 63.0% and 55.1% for the CSC and SC arms, respectively. CSC also significantly improved the PFS (HR, 0.70; stratified log-rank P = .016). In conclusion, neoadjuvant DOS chemotherapy, as part of perioperative chemotherapy, prolonged the OS of Asian patients with LAGC relative to patients treated with surgery and adjuvant S-1. It should be considered one of the standard treatment options for patients with LAGC in Asia.

Fluorescent proteins (FPs) are essential tools for advanced microscopy techniques such as super-resolution imaging, single-particle tracking, and quantitative single-molecule counting. Various FPs fused to DNA-binding proteins have been used to observe the subcellular location and movement of specific gene loci in living and fixed bacterial cells. However, quantitative assessments of the properties of FPs for gene locus measurements are still lacking. Here, we assessed various FPs to observe specific gene loci in live and fixed Escherichia coli cells using a fluorescent repressor-operator binding system (FROS), tet operator-Tet repressor proteins (TetR). Tsr-fused FPs were used to assess the intensity and photostability of various FPs (five red FPs: mCherry2, FusionRed, mRFP, mCrimson3, and dKatushka; and seven yellow FPs: SYFP2, Venus, mCitrine, YPet, mClover3, mTopaz, and EYFP) at the single-molecule level in living cells. These FPs were then used for gene locus measurements using FROS. Our results indicate that TetR-mCrimson3 (red) and TetR-EYFP (yellow) had better properties for visualizing gene loci than the other TetR-FPs. Furthermore, fixation procedures affected the clustering of diffusing TetR-FPs and altered the locations of the TetR-FP foci. Fixation with formaldehyde consistently disrupted proper DNA locus observations using TetR-FPs. Notably, the foci measured using TetR-mCrimson3 remained close to their original positions in live cells after glyoxal fixation. This in vivo study provides a cell-imaging guide for the use of FPs for gene-locus observation in E. coli and a scheme for evaluating the use of FPs for other cell-imaging purposes.

Genetic factors contribute significantly to congenital hearing loss, with non-syndromic cases being more prevalent and genetically heterogeneous. Currently, 150 genes have been associated with non-syndromic hearing loss, and their identification has improved our understanding of auditory physiology and potential therapeutic targets. Hearing loss gene panels offer comprehensive genetic testing for hereditary hearing loss, and advancements in sequencing technology have made genetic testing more accessible and affordable. Currently, genetic panel tests available at a relatively lower cost are offered to patients who face financial barriers. In this study, clinical and audiometric data were collected from six pediatric patients who underwent genetic panel testing. Known pathogenic variants in MYO15A, GJB2, and USH2A were most likely to be causal of hearing loss. Novel pathogenic variants in the MYO7A and TECTA genes were also identified. Variable hearing phenotypes and inheritance patterns were observed amongst individuals with different pathogenic variants. The identification of these variants contributes to the continually expanding knowledge base on genetic hearing loss and lays the groundwork for personalized treatment options in the future.

Introduction: Mucins play a pivotal role in epithelial carcinogenesis; however, their role remains elusive in ampulla of Vater (AoV) cancer, regardless of histological subtype. Therefore, we investigated the clinical significance of MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC6 expression in AoV cancer. Methods: Using samples from 68 patients with AoV cancer, we performed immunohistochemical staining for MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC6 using a tissue microarray. Subsequently, we analyzed their expression patterns in relation to clinicopathological parameters and patient outcomes. Results: Of the patients, 98.5% exhibited positive expression for MUC1, while MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC6 were expressed in 44.1%, 47.1%, and 41.2% of the patients, respectively. Correlation analyses between mucin expression and clinicopathological factors revealed no significant associations, except between MUC5AC expression and N stage. Univariate analysis demonstrated significant associations between MUC5AC expression and overall survival (OS). Multivariate analysis further confirmed that MUC5AC expression was a significant predictor of OS, along with the N stage. However, MUC5AC expression was not meaningfully associated with recurrence-free survival (RFS). The patients positive for MUC5AC expression had a considerably shorter OS than those with negative expression. Conclusions: Our study provides insights into the clinical impact of mucins on AoV cancer, regardless of the histological subtype. Although MUC1 expression is universal, MUC5AC expression is a significant prognostic indicator that correlates with lymph node metastasis and poor OS. These results emphasize the possible utility of MUC5AC as a biomarker for extensive lymph node dissection and the prognostic evaluation of patients with AoV cancer.

Docking domains (DDs) located at the C- and N-termini of polypeptides play a crucial role in directing the assembly of polyketide synthases (PKSs), which are multienzyme complexes. Here, we determined the crystal structure of a complex comprising the C-terminal DD (CDDMlnB) and N-terminal DD (NDDMlnC) of macrolactin trans-acyltransferase (AT) PKS that were fused to a functional enzyme, AmpC EC2 ß-lactamase. Interface analyses of the CDDMlnB/NDDMlnC complex revealed the molecular intricacies in the core section underpinning the precise DD assembly. Additionally, circular dichroism and steady-state kinetics demonstrated that the formation of the CDDMlnB/NDDMlnC complex had no influence on the structural and functional fidelity of the fusion partner, AmpC EC2. This inspired us to apply the CDDMlnB/NDDMlnC assembly to metabolon engineering. Indeed, DD assembly induced the formation of a complex between 4-coumarate-CoA ligase and chalcone synthase both involved in flavonoid biosynthesis, leading to a remarkable increase in naringenin production in vitro.

A pulmonary artery periadventitial hematoma is a rare complication of a Stanford type A intramural hematoma. As the proximal ascending aorta and pulmonary artery share a common adventitial layer, extravasated blood from the intramural hematoma in the ascending thoracic aorta may extend to beneath the adventitia of the pulmonary artery. The authors describe a case involving a 66-year-old male with acute chest pain who presented with a pulmonary artery periadventitial hematoma associated with a Stanford type A intramural hematoma.
