RESUMO

Citrus fruits are one of the most widely used fruits around the world and are used as raw fruits, but are also processed into products such as beverages, and large amounts of by-products and waste are generated in this process. Globally, disposal of citrus waste (CW) through simple landfilling or ocean dumping can result in soil and groundwater contamination, which can negatively impact ecosystem health. The case of Korea is not much different in that these wastes are simply buried or recycled wastes are used as livestock feed additives. However, there are many reports that CW, which is a waste, has high potential to produce a variety of products that can minimize environmental load and increase added value through appropriate waste management. In this study, we aim to explore the latest developments in the evaluation and valorization of the growing CW green technologies in an effort to efficiently and environmentally transform these CW for resource recovery, sustainability, and economic benefits. Recent research strategies on integrated biorefinery approaches have confirmed that CW can be converted into various bioproducts such as enzymes, biofuels and biopolymers, further contributing to energy security. It was found that more efforts are needed to scale up green recovery technologies and achieve diverse product profiling to achieve zero waste levels and industrial viability.

RESUMO

An acute brain lesion (ABL) identified by brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a strong prognostic factor for the development of delayed neuropsychiatric syndrome (DNS). This study aimed to identify predictors of ABLs on MRI in patients with acute CO poisoning. This was a multicenter prospective registry-based observational study conducted at two tertiary hospitals. A total of 1,034 patients were included. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that loss of consciousness (LOC) (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.68, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.49-5.06), Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score < 9 (aOR 2.41, 95% CI: 1.49-3.91), troponin-I (TnI) (aOR 1.22, 95% CI: 1.08-1.41), CO exposure duration (aOR 1.09, 95% CI: 1.05-1.13), and white blood cell (WBC) (aOR 1.05, 95% CI: 1.01-1.09) were independent predictors of ABLs on MRI. LOC, GCS score, TnI, CO exposure duration, and WBC count can be useful predictors of ABLs on MRI in patients with acute CO poisoning, helping clinicians decide the need for an MRI scan or transfer the patient to an appropriate institution for MRI or hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic performance of the rapid antigen test (RAT) for screening patients with cycle threshold (Ct) values of SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in the emergency department. Previous studies have shown that Ct values could be used as indicators of infectiousness. Therefore, we considered the Ct value an indicator of potential infectiousness. METHODS: This single-center retrospective observational study was conducted between January 1, 2020, and March 31, 2022. Patients who underwent both RT-PCR and RAT for the diagnosis of COVID-19 were included. Patients with negative RT-PCR results were excluded. Patients with Ct values lower than 26 and 30 were considered potentially infectious for COVID-19. RESULT: A total of 386 patients were analyzed. At Ct value cutoffs of 26 and 30, the result of the RAT showed a sensitivity of 82% and 74%, specificity of 84% and 89%, and area under the curve (AUC) of 0.829 and 0.813, respectively, in the receiver operating characteristic curve. However, the NPV was relatively low at 55% and 25%. CONCLUSION: The RAT might be a rapid screening tool for detecting patients with the infectiousness of SARS-CoV-2. However, considering the low NPV, it is challenging to depend only on a negative test result from an antigen test to terminate quarantine. Clinicians should consider additional factors, such as the duration of symptoms and the immunocompromised state, for SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

RESUMO

Arterial blood gas analysis (ABGA) is one of the few tests performed during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). There have been some studies on the prediction of survival outcomes in adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients during CPR using ABGA results. However, in pediatric OHCA patients, the prognosis of survival outcome based on ABGA results during CPR remains unclear. We retrospectively analyzed prospectively collected data from the Korean Cardiac Arrest Resuscitation Consortium (KoCARC) registry, a multicenter OHCA registry of Republic of Korea. We analyzed 108 pediatric (age < 19 years) OHCA patients between October 2015 and June 2022. Using multivariable logistic regression, an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) was obtained to validate the ABGA results of survival to hospital admission and survival to discharge. The variables associated with survival to hospital admission were non-comorbidities (aOR 3.03, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.22-7.53, p = 0.017) and PaO2 > 45.750 mmHg (aOR 2.69, 95% CI 1.13-6.42, p = 0.026). There was no variable that was statistically significant association with survival to discharge. PaO2 > 47.750 mmHg and non-comorbidities may serve as an independent prognostic factor for survival to hospital admission in pediatric OHCA patients. However, the number of cases analyzed in our study was relatively small, and there have been few studies investigating the association between ABGA results during CPR and the survival outcome of pediatric OHCA patients. Therefore, further large-scale studies are needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a major public health problem and a leading cause of death worldwide. Previous studies have focused on improving the survival of people who have had OHCA by analyzing short-term survival outcomes, such as the return of spontaneous circulation, 30-day survival, and survival to discharge. Research has been conducted on prehospital prognostic factors to improve the survival of patients with OHCA, among which the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and survival has been reported. SES could affect bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation rates and whether OHCA is witnessed, and low cardiopulmonary resuscitation education rates are associated with low SES. It has been reported that areas with high SES have shorter hospital transfer times and more public defibrillators per person. Previous studies have shown the impact of SES disparities on the short-term survival of patients with OHCA. However, understanding the impact of SES on the long-term prognosis of OHCA survivors remains limited. As long-term outcomes are more indicative of a patient's ongoing health care needs and the burden on public health than short-term outcomes, understanding the long-term prognosis of OHCA survivors is important. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify whether SES influenced the long-term outcomes of OHCA. METHODS: Using health claims data obtained from the National Health Insurance (NHI) service in Korea, we included OHCA survivors who were hospitalized between January 2005 and December 2015. The patients were divided into 2 groups: NHI and Medical Aid (MA) groups, with the MA group defined as having a low SES. Cumulative mortality was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and a Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the impact of SES on long-term mortality. A subgroup analysis was performed based on whether cardiac procedures were performed. RESULTS: We followed 4873 OHCA survivors for up to 14 years (median of 3.3 years). The Kaplan-Meier survival curve showed that the MA group had a significantly decreased long-term survival rate compared to the NHI group. With an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 1.52 (95% CI 1.35-1.72), low SES was associated with increased long-term mortality. The overall mortality rate of the patients who underwent cardiac procedures in the MA group was significantly higher than that of the NHI group (aHR 1.72, 95% CI 1.05-2.82). The overall mortality rate of patients without cardiac procedures was also increased in the MA group compared to the NHI group (aHR 1.39, 95% CI 1.23-1.58). CONCLUSIONS: OHCA survivors with low SES had an increased risk of poor long-term outcomes compared with those with higher SES. OHCA survivors with low SES who have undergone cardiac procedures need considerable care for long-term survival.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Delayed neuropsychiatric sequelae (DNS) are a severe complication of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, and predicting DNS is difficult. This study aimed to investigate whether cardiac markers can be used as biomarkers to predict DNS occurrence following acute CO poisoning. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study that included patients with acute CO poisoning who visited two emergency medical centers in Korea from January 2008 to December 2020. The primary outcome was whether the occurrence of DNS was associated with laboratory results. RESULTS: Of the 1327 patients with CO poisoning, 967 patients were included. Troponin I and BNP were significantly higher in the DNS group. As a result of multivariate logistic regression analysis, it was found that troponin I, mentality, creatine kinase, brain natriuretic peptide, and lactate levels independently influenced DNS occurrence in CO poisoning patients. The adjusted odds ratios for DNS occurrence were 2.12 (95% CI 1.31-3.47, p = 0.002) for troponin I and 2.80 (95% CI 1.81-3.47, p < 0.001) for BNP. CONCLUSION: Troponin I and BNP might be useful biomarkers for predicting the occurrence of DNS in patients with acute CO poisoning. This finding can help to identify high-risk patients who require close monitoring and early intervention to prevent DNS.

RESUMO

Importance: The recent American Heart Association guidelines added a sixth link in the chain of survival highlighting recovery and emphasized the importance of psychiatric outcome and recovery for survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among this population was higher than that in the general population. Objective: To examine the prevalence of depression or anxiety and the association of these conditions with long-term mortality among individuals who survive OHCA. Design, Setting, and Participants: A longitudinal population-based cohort study was conducted to analyze long-term prognosis in patients hospitalized for OHCA between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2015, who survived for 1 year or longer. Patients with cardiac arrest due to traumatic or nonmedical causes, such as injuries, poisoning, asphyxiation, burns, or anaphylaxis, were excluded. Data were extracted on depression or anxiety diagnoses in this population within 1 year from the database of the Korean National Health Insurance Service and analyzed April 7, 2022, and reanalyzed January 19 to 20, 2023. Main Outcomes and Measures: Follow-up data were obtained for up to 14 years, and the primary outcome was long-term cumulative mortality. Long-term mortality among patients with and without a diagnosis of depression or anxiety were evaluated. Results: The analysis included 2373 patients; 1860 (78.4%) were male, and the median age was 53.0 (IQR, 44.0-62.0) years . A total of 397 (16.7%) patients were diagnosed with depression or anxiety, 251 (10.6%) were diagnosed with depression, and 227 (9.6%) were diagnosed with anxiety. The incidence of long-term mortality was significantly higher in the group diagnosed with depression or anxiety than in the group without depression or anxiety (141 of 397 [35.5%] vs 534 of 1976 [27.0%]; P = .001). With multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis, the adjusted hazard ratio of long-term mortality for total patients with depression or anxiety was 1.41 (95% CI, 1.17-1.70); depression, 1.44 (95% CI, 1.16-1.79); and anxiety, 1.20 (95% CI, 0.94-1.53). Conclusions and Relevance: In this study, among the patients who experienced OHCA, those diagnosed with depression or anxiety had higher long-term mortality rates than those without depression or anxiety. These findings suggest that psychological and neurologic rehabilitation intervention for survivors of OHCA may be needed to improve long-term survival.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of transarterial embolization (TAE) for chronic Achilles tendinopathy (AT) refractory to conservative treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 20 patients (12 men and 8 women; mean age, 30.3 years) who received TAE using imipenem/cilastatin sodium for refractory chronic AT from May 2019 to April 2021. Nine patients had bilateral involvement. A total of 29 procedures were performed (8 for nonathletes and 21 for athletes). If feasible, embolization was performed superselectively of the arterial branch demonstrating hypervascularity, early venous drainage, and/or supplying the pain site noted using a radiopaque marker. The visual analog scale (VAS, 0-10) score was used to assess pain symptoms at baseline and during the follow-up period (1 day; 1 week; 1, 3, and 6 months; and open period). Clinical success was defined as a decrease of >50% in the VAS score at 6 months when compared with baseline. RESULTS: In 25 (86.2%) of 29 procedures, clinical success was achieved. Significant decreases in the VAS scores were noted at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months (6.86 at the baseline vs 3.48, 3.41, 3.10, 2.55, and 1.62, respectively; all P < .01). For patients available for the 12- and 24-month follow-ups (n = 19 and 6, respectively), the mean VAS scores significantly decreased (6.84 vs 2.00 and 7.33 vs 1.17, respectively; all P < .01). No serious adverse events were observed during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: TAE may alleviate pain for patients with chronic AT refractory to the conservative treatment with a low risk of adverse events.

RESUMO

Camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora) is an ornamental plant that has been cultivated for a long time to obtain wood or camphor. Furthermore, its essential oil can be used as an alternative medicine and is an important source of perfume. Camphor obtained from camphor trees has long been used as a treatment for various symptoms such as inflammation, infection, congestion, muscle pain, and irritation in various regions. The purpose of this literature review is to provide knowledge of the well-established, wide, and extensive applications of camphor both in traditional and modern applications. Despite many studies focused on the essential oil of the camphor tree, there is a lack of systematic studies of its extraction or separation. Besides, various components of camphor are not fully understood, and further research is needed on the medicinal effects of individual components of C. camphor. The genus Cinnamomum has crucial economic value and theoretical significance. However, further systematic reviews and investigative studies based on existing research are needed to promote the modernization process of traditional applications of camphor. For proper use of the essential oil of C. camphora, it is imperative to consider its possible effects on humans and the environment.

RESUMO

Soil health deteriorates through the contamination and remediation processes, resulting in the limitation of the reuse and recycling of the remediated soils. Therefore, soil health should be recovered for the intended purposes of reuse and recycling. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of several amendments to revitalize total petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soils remediated by the landfarming process. Ten inorganic, organic, and biological amendments were investigated for their dosage and duration, and nine physicochemical, four fertility, and seven microbial (soil enzyme activity) factors were compared before and after the treatment of amendments. Finally, the extent of recovery was quantitatively estimated, and the significance of results was confirmed with statistical methods, such as simple regression and correlation analyses assisted by principal component analysis. The landfarming process is considered a somewhat environmentally friendly remediation technology to minimize the adverse effect on soil quality, but four soil properties-such as water holding capacity (WHC), exchangeable potassium (Ex. K), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), available phosphorus (Av. P), and urease-were confirmed to deteriorate through the landfarming process. The WHC was better improved by organic agents, such as peat moss, biochar, and compost. Zeolite was evaluated as the most effective material for improving Ex. K content. The vermicompost showed the highest efficacy in recovering the NO3-N content of the remediated soil. Chlorella, vermicompost, and compost were investigated for their ability to enhance urease activity effectively. Although each additive showed different effectiveness according to different soil properties, their effect on overall soil properties should be considered for cost-effectiveness and practical implementation. Their overall effect was evaluated using statistical methods, and the results showed that compost, chlorella, and vermicompost were the most relevant amendments for rehabilitating the overall health of the remediated soil for the reuse and/or recycling of agricultural purposes. This study highlighted how to practically improve the health of remediated soils for the reuse and recycling of agricultural purposes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for chronic medial epicondylitis (ME) refractory to conservative treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included ten patients (14 procedures) who underwent TAE between May of 2018 and April of 2020 to treat chronic ME refractory to conservative treatments for at least 3 months. Imipenem/cilastatin sodium was used in 12 procedures, and quick-soluble gelatin sponge particles were used in the ensuing two procedures as an embolic agent. The visual analogue scale (VAS, 0-10) score and Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (Quick-DASH) scores were assessed at baseline and at different post-treatment times (1 day; 1 week; 1, 3, and 6 months; and an open period). The clinical success of the procedure was defined as a decrease of more than 70% in the Quick-DASH scores at 6 months compared to the baseline. RESULTS: Clinical success was achieved in 12 of 14 procedures (85.7%). No major complications were observed during the follow-up periods. The mean VAS scores were significantly decreased at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months (7.6 at baseline vs. 3.6, 3.6, 3.6, 3, and 0.9 after treatment; all P < .01). The mean Quick-DASH scores at baseline decreased significantly at 1 day, 1 week, and at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment (71.9 vs. 48.5, 44, 37.7, 30.2, and 8.4; all P < .01). These improvements endured in nine patients for up to 12 months after treatment. CONCLUSION: TAE effectively and safely relieved pain and promoted functional recovery in chronic ME patients refractory to conservative treatments. TAE may be a feasible treatment option for patients with ME intractable to conservative treatments.

RESUMO

Various types of organic and inorganic materials are widely examined and applied into the arsenic (As) contaminated soil to stabilize As bioavailability and to enhance soil quality as an amendment. This study deals with two types of amendments: biochar for organic amendment and acid mine drainage sludge (AMDS) for inorganic amendment. Each amendment was applied in two types of As contaminated soils: one showed low contaminated concentration and acid property and the other showed high contaminated concentration and alkali property. In order to comprehensively evaluate the effect of amendments on As contaminated soil, chemical (As bioavailability), biological phytotoxicity (Lactuca sativa), soil respiration activity, dehydrogenase activity, urease activity, ß-glucosidase activity, and acid/alkali phosphomonoesterase activity, an ecological (total bacterial cells and total metagenomics DNA at the phylum level) assessment was conducted. Both amendments increased soil pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which changes the bioavailability of As. In reducing phytotoxicity to As, the AMDS was the most effective regardless of soil types. Although soil enzyme activity results were not consistent with amendments types and soil types, bacterial diversity was increased after amendment application in acid soil. In acid soil, the results of principal component analysis represented that AMDS contributes to improve soil quality through the reduction in As bioavailability and the correction of soil pH from acidic to neutral condition, despite the increases in DOC. However, soil DOC had a negative effect on As bioavailability, phytotoxicity and some enzyme activity in alkali soil. Taken together, it is necessary to comprehensively evaluate the interaction of chemical, biological, and ecological properties according to soil pH in the decision-making stages for the selection of appropriate soil restoration material.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Patients undergoing long-term hemodialysis may suffer upper extremity central venous access failure and require an alternative route. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of transrenal hemodialysis catheter insertion/replacement in patients with upper extremity central venous access failure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was made of transrenal hemodialysis catheter insertion/replacement performed between 2014 and 2020. The history of renal replacement therapy and central venous catheters and the technical details of transrenal hemodialysis catheter insertion/replacement, patency, removal and complications were obtained for all patients. RESULTS: Six insertion and four replacement procedures involving transrenal hemodialysis catheters were evaluated in six patients (M:F = 3:3; median age, 49.5 years). Percutaneous transrenal (right:left = 1:5) hemodialysis catheter insertion was technically successful without complication in all six patients. In two patients, the tract was not lost because the safety guidewire was still in place, so no second puncture was required. The mean procedure time was 33.0 ± 9.2 min. The mean primary patency duration was 107.3 ± 70.9 days. During the mean follow-up duration of 141.2 ± 137.1 days, four hemodialysis catheter replacement procedures were successfully performed for catheter malfunction (n = 2) and dislodgement (n = 2). Catheter removal was successfully performed in four patients after confirming normal coagulation, followed by subsequent renal replacement therapy. CONCLUSION: Percutaneous insertion/replacement of transrenal hemodialysis catheters is feasible, safe, and effective when upper extremity central venous access is exhausted, and the catheters can be maintained for a reasonable period of time. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4, Case Series.

RESUMO

Biochar application to As-contaminated soil can alter various soil chemical properties, and it can affect available As, plant As uptake, and As phytotoxicity. Increased dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and P released from biochar affect As behavior in the soil system. In this study, we evaluated the effect of biochar application on the chemical properties of soil and phytotoxicity in Brassica juncea using correlation analysis and partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM). Biochar application increased electrical conductivity (EC), DOC, available P and available As. However, the increased available As did not significantly affect As uptake by B. juncea due to the decrease in the relative ratio and effect of available As with increase in available P derived from biochar. Moreover, biochar application negatively affected soil chemical properties (pH, EC, DOC, available P, and available As) and As uptake by B. juncea. Therefore, correlation analysis and PLS-PM analysis are useful tools to interpret the interactions among influencing factors in the soil-plant system. An approach at the equivalent molecular level rather than concentration should be adopted in future studies.

RESUMO

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a neurotrophic factor and its role in peripheral nerves has been relatively unknown. In this study, biological functions of HGF and its receptor c-met have been investigated in the context of regeneration of damaged peripheral nerves. Axotomy of the peripheral branch of sensory neurons from embryonic dorsal root ganglia (DRG) resulted in the increased protein levels of HGF and phosphorylated c-met. When the neuronal cultures were treated with a pharmacological inhibitor of c-met, PHA665752, the length of axotomy-induced outgrowth of neurite was significantly reduced. On the other hand, the addition of recombinant HGF proteins to the neuronal culture facilitated axon outgrowth. In the nerve crush mouse model, the protein level of HGF was increased around the injury site by almost 5.5-fold at 24 h post injury compared to control mice and was maintained at elevated levels for another 6 days. The amount of phosphorylated c-met receptor in sciatic nerve was also observed to be higher than control mice. When PHA665752 was locally applied to the injury site of sciatic nerve, axon outgrowth and injury mediated induction of cJun protein were effectively inhibited, indicating the functional involvement of HGF/c-met pathway in the nerve regeneration process. When extra HGF was exogenously provided by intramuscular injection of plasmid DNA expressing HGF, axon outgrowth from damaged sciatic nerve and cJun expression level were enhanced. Taken together, these results suggested that HGF/c-met pathway plays important roles in axon outgrowth by directly interacting with sensory neurons and thus HGF might be a useful tool for developing therapeutics for peripheral neuropathy.

RESUMO

In this work, a multi-mode radar transceiver supporting pulse, FMCW and CW modes was designed as an integrated circuit. The radars mainly detect the targets move by using the Doppler frequency which is significantly affected by flicker noise of the receiver from several Hz to several kHz. Due to this flicker noise, the long-range detection performance of the radars is greatly reduced, and the accuracy of range to the target and velocity is also deteriorated. Therefore, we propose a transmitter that suppresses LO leakage in consideration of long-range detection, target distance, velocity, and noise figure. We also propose a receiver structure that suppresses DC offset due to image signal and LO leakage. The design was conducted with TSMC 65 nm CMOS process, and the designed and fabricated circuit consumes a current of 265 mA at 1.2 V supply voltage. The proposed transmitter confirms the LO leakage suppression of 37 dB at 24 GHz. The proposed receiver improves the noise figure by about 20 dB at 100 Hz by applying a double conversion architecture and an image rejection, and it illustrates a DC rejection of 30 dB. Afterwards, the operation of the pulse, FMCW, and CW modes of the designed radar in integrated circuit was confirmed through experiment using a test PCB.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Some patients who need surgery refuse a blood transfusion because of their religious beliefs or concerns about blood-borne infections. In recent years, bloodless surgery has been performed successfully in many procedures, and is therefore of increasing interest in orthognathic surgery. METHODS: Ten Jehovah's Witnesses who visited our bloodless surgery center for orthognathic surgery participated in this study. To maintain hemoglobin (Hb) levels above 10 g/dL before surgery, recombinant erythropoietin (rEPO) was subcutaneously administered and iron supplements were intravenously administered. During surgery, acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) and induced hypotensive anesthesia were used. To elevate the Hb levels to >10 g/dL after surgery, a similar method to the preoperative approach was used. RESULTS: The 10 patients comprised three men and seven women. Their average Hb level at the first visit was 11.1 g/dL. With treatment according to our protocol, the average preoperative Hb level rose to 12.01 g/dL, and the average Hb level on postoperative day 1 was 10.01 g/dL. No patients needed a blood transfusion, and all patients were discharged without any complications. CONCLUSIONS: This study presents a way to manage patients who refuse blood transfusions while undergoing orthognathic surgery. rEPO and iron supplementation were used to maintain Hb levels above 10 g/dL. During surgery, blood loss was minimized by a meticulous procedure and induced hypotensive anesthesia, and intravascular volume was maintained by ANH. Our practical approach to orthognathic surgery for Jehovah's Witnesses can be applied to the management of all patients who refuse blood transfusions.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the environmental impact and human health risks associated with toxic trace element (TTE) exposure in the abandoned Yaro Mine, Korea. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were assessed separately for adults and children. Among the various pathways, the rate of TTE intake from the ingestion of groundwater was highest, followed in descending order by crop consumption, soil ingestion, and soil contact. The carcinogenic risk from the ingestion of groundwater was highest, followed by crop consumption and ingestion of contaminated surface soil. The non-carcinogenic risk from the ingestion of groundwater was highest (53.57% of the total non-carcinogenic risk), followed by crop intake (38.53%) and surface soil ingestion (4.80%). The risk assessment revealed that contaminated soil around Yaro mine posed a high risk to the health of inhabitants, mainly via groundwater ingestion and crop consumption. Reclamation measures should include methods of disrupting the high-risk routes between the source and recipient. Stabilization and covering techniques are promising options for reducing the hazard (i.e., exposure to the bioavailable fraction of TTE) and creating a chemical or physicochemical barrier to the potential migration pathways.

RESUMO

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a versatile neurotrophic factor that mediates a variety of cellular activities. In this study, we investigated the effects of intramuscularly injected recombinant AAV vectors expressing HGF in two pathologic conditions: the sciatic nerve crush and the SOD1-G93A transgenic mouse models. AAV serotype 6 (rAAV6) was chosen based on its expression levels in, and capability of moving to, the spinal cord from the injected muscle area. In the nerve crush model, rAAV6-HGF was shown to reduce the degree of mechanical allodynia, increase the cross-sectional area of muscle fibers, promote regrowth of peripheral axons, and improve motor functions. In the SOD1-G93A TG mouse model, rAAV6-HGF increased the mass of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius, alleviated disease symptoms, and prolonged survival. Improvements in integrity and functions of muscle in these models seemed to have come from the ability of HGF produced from rAAV6-HGF to regulate the expression of various atrogenes through the control of the FOXO signaling pathway. Our findings suggested that intramuscular injection of rAAV6-HGF might be used to relieve various symptoms associated with muscle atrophy and/or nerve damages observed in a majority of neuromuscular diseases.
