RESUMO

Recently, high-efficiency III-nitride photonic emitters (PEs) for next-generation displays have been studied. Although micro-light-emitting diodes (µ-LEDs), one of the III-nitride PEs, have attracted considerable attention because of their high efficiency and size flexibility, they have encountered technical limitations such as high defect rate, high processing cost, and low yield. To overcome these drawbacks of µ-LEDs, a lot of research on PEs using one-dimensional (1D) gallium nitride-related nanorods (GNRs) capable of horizontally self-positioning on the electrodes has been carried out. The degree of array of GNRs on the interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) is an important factor in the efficiency of the PEs using GNRs to obtain excellent single-pixel characteristics. Therefore, in this study, we demonstrate that the improved performance of self-arrayed GNRs was realized using the dielectrophoresis technique by changing the thickness of IDEs. In addition, the shape and size of vertically aligned GNRs were controlled by the wet process, and GNR-integrated PEs (GIPEs) were driven by perfectly horizontally self-arrayed GNRs on IDEs. The electroluminescence (EL) intensity of the GIPEs was measured at 4-20 V and showed a maximum intensity value at 15 V. Over the injection voltage at 20 V, the EL intensity decreased due to the high current density of GIPEs. The external quantum efficiency (EQE) property of the GIPEs showed a similar efficiency droop as that of conventional III-nitride PEs.

BACKGROUND: End-stage liver disease caused by non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the second leading indication for liver transplantation. To date, only moderately effective pharmacotherapies exist to treat NASH. Understanding the pathogenesis of NASH is therefore crucial for the development of new therapies. The inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) is important for the progression of liver disease. TNF signaling via TNF receptor 1 (TNFR1) has been hypothesized to be important for the development of NASH and hepatocellular carcinoma in whole-body knockout animal models. AIM: To investigate the role of TNFR1 signaling in hepatocytes for steatohepatitis development in a mouse model of diet-induced NASH. METHODS: NASH was induced by a western-style fast-food diet in mice deficient for TNFR1 in hepatocytes (TNFR1ΔHEP) and their wild-type littermates (TNFR1fl/fl). Glucose tolerance was assessed after 18 wk and insulin resistance after 19 wk of feeding. After 20 wk mice were assessed for features of NASH and the metabolic syndrome such as liver weight, liver steatosis, liver fibrosis and markers of liver inflammation. RESULTS: Obesity, liver injury, inflammation, steatosis and fibrosis was not different between TNFR1ΔHEP and TNFR1fl/fl mice. However, Tnfr1 deficiency in hepatocytes protected against glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that deficiency of TNFR1 signaling in hepatocytes does not protect from diet-induced NASH. However, improved insulin resistance in this model strengthens the role of the liver in glucose homeostasis.

To develop high-performance de- or anti-frosting/icing devices based on transparent heaters, it is necessary to study the evaporation-rate control of droplets on heater surfaces. However, almost no research has been done on the evaporation-rate control of liquid droplets on transparent heaters. In this study, we investigate the evaporation characteristics of water droplets on transparent heater surfaces and determine that they depend upon the surface wettability, by modifying which, the complete evaporation time can be controlled. In addition, we study the defrosting and deicing performances through the surface wettability, by placing the flexible transparent heater on a webcam. The obtained results can be used as fundamental data for the transparent defrosting and deicing systems of closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera lenses, smart windows, vehicle backup cameras, aircraft windows, and sensor applications.

Chronic liver disease due to alcohol-use disorder contributes markedly to the global burden of disease and mortality1-3. Alcoholic hepatitis is a severe and life-threatening form of alcohol-associated liver disease. The gut microbiota promotes ethanol-induced liver disease in mice4, but little is known about the microbial factors that are responsible for this process. Here we identify cytolysin-a two-subunit exotoxin that is secreted by Enterococcus faecalis5,6-as a cause of hepatocyte death and liver injury. Compared with non-alcoholic individuals or patients with alcohol-use disorder, patients with alcoholic hepatitis have increased faecal numbers of E. faecalis. The presence of cytolysin-positive (cytolytic) E. faecalis correlated with the severity of liver disease and with mortality in patients with alcoholic hepatitis. Using humanized mice that were colonized with bacteria from the faeces of patients with alcoholic hepatitis, we investigated the therapeutic effects of bacteriophages that target cytolytic E. faecalis. We found that these bacteriophages decrease cytolysin in the liver and abolish ethanol-induced liver disease in humanized mice. Our findings link cytolytic E. faecalis with more severe clinical outcomes and increased mortality in patients with alcoholic hepatitis. We show that bacteriophages can specifically target cytolytic E. faecalis, which provides a method for precisely editing the intestinal microbiota. A clinical trial with a larger cohort is required to validate the relevance of our findings in humans, and to test whether this therapeutic approach is effective for patients with alcoholic hepatitis.

This study was carried out to establish shelf life for pork cutlet of ground meat and pork lard by using various quality indicators and to understand how quality changes in these products are accelerated by temperature. The samples were selected and purchased from markets in Korea, and the chosen quality indicators were total aerobic counts and coliform group in microbiological analyses, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay, volatile basic nitrogen, pH, acid value, and peroxide value in physical chemical analyses, and sensory evaluation. The pork cutlet samples were stored at -18℃, -6℃, and -1℃, whereas pork lard samples were stored at 10℃, 25℃, 35℃, and 45℃. These temperature conditions were set to real distribution conditions. The samples were then analyzed using various models including of reaction orders, arrhenius equation, and Q10 value. The quality limits for each sample were calculated, and shelf life was estimated. The results of this experiment highlighted the importance of temperature control during the distribution process of these products and revealed that temperature is a useful parameter for the establishment of a basic database for shelf life.

Solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are attractive due to their low-cost, large area displays, and lighting features. Small molecules as well as polymers can be used as host materials within the solution-processed emitting layer. Herein, we report two 3,3'-bicarbazole-based host small molecules, which possess a structural isomer relationship. 9,9'-Di-4-n-butylphenyl-9H,9'H-3,3'-bicarbazole (BCz-nBuPh) and 9,9'-di-4-t-butylphenyl-9H,9'H-3,3'-bicarbazole (BCz-tBuPh) exhibited similar optical properties within solutions but different photoluminescence within films. A solution-processed green phosphorescent OLED with the BCz-tBuPh host exhibited a high maximum current efficiency and power efficiency of 43.1 cd/A and 40.0 lm/W, respectively, compared to the device with the BCz-nBuPh host.

C-type regenerating islet derived-3 (Reg3) lectins defend against pathogens and keep commensal bacteria at a distance. Deficiency of Reg3g and Reg3b facilitates alcohol-induced bacterial translocation and alcoholic liver disease. Intestinal Reg3g is down-regulated in animal models of diet-induced obesity, but the functional consequences for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of Reg3 lectins in NASH. NASH was induced by a Western-style fast-food diet in mice deficient for Reg3g or Reg3b and in transgenic mice overexpressing Reg3g in intestinal epithelial cells (Reg3gTg). Glucose tolerance was assessed after 18 weeks and insulin resistance after 19 weeks of feeding. After 20 weeks, mice were assessed for features of the metabolic syndrome. Obesity was not different in genetically modified mice compared with their respective wild-type littermates. Glucose intolerance, liver injury, hepatic inflammation, steatosis, fibrosis, and bacterial translocation to mesenteric lymph nodes and to the liver were not different in Reg3g-deficient mice compared with wild-type littermates. Plasma endotoxin levels were higher in Reg3g-deficient mice. Reg3b deficiency protected against glucose intolerance, but liver disease, bacterial translocation, and plasma endotoxin levels were similar to wild-type littermates. Absence of either REG3G or REG3B protein in the ileum was not compensated for by up-regulation of the respective other REG3 protein. Transgenic Reg3g mice also developed liver injury, steatosis, and fibrosis similar to their wild-type littermates. Conclusion: In contrast to alcoholic liver disease, loss of intestinal Reg3 lectins is not sufficient to aggravate diet-induced obesity and NASH. This supports a multi-hit pathogenesis in NASH. Only glucose metabolism is affected by Reg3b deficiency. (Hepatology Communications 2018;2:393-406).

In this report, we describe the fabrication of periodic Ag nanogrid electrodes by capillary assembly of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) along patterned nanogrid templates. By assembling the AgNPs into these high-aspect-ratio nanogrid patterns, we can obtain high-aspect-ratio nanogratings, which can overcome the inherent trade-off between the optical transmittance and the sheet resistance of transparent electrodes. The junction resistance between the AgNPs is effectively reduced by photochemical welding and post-annealing. The fabricated high-aspect-ratio nanogrid structure with a line width of 150 nm and a height of 450 nm has a sheet resistance of 15.2 Ω sq(-1) and an optical transmittance of 85.4%.

In order to improve their performance for various applications, a facile method for the wafer-scale fabrication of micro/nano-patterned vertical silicon (Si) structures such as silicon nanowires (SiNWs), silicon nanorods (SiNRs), and porous silicon (p-Si) was developed. The method is based on the combination of lithography techniques (photolithography, thermal nano-imprint lithography, nanosphere lithography) and wet chemical etching (electro-chemical etching, metal-assisted chemical etching) processes. Micro-patterned p-Si with various pore diameters from 30 nm to 1.2 um were fabricated via electro-chemical etching. Micro/nano-patterned Si microstructures, nanorods, and nanowires were also successfully fabricated by changing the thickness of the metal layer of 5 nm or 20 nm in the metal-assisted chemical etching process. This study also investigated the effect of the etching time and patterning on the etched SiNWs length. This method provides advantages of simplicity, speed, large-scale production, easy size and shape manipulation, and low cost.

Uniform metal nanomesh structures are promising candidates that may replace of indium-tin oxide (ITO) in transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs). However, the durability of the uniform metal mesh has not yet been studied. For this reason, a comparative analysis of the durability of TCEs based on pure Ag and AgNi nanomesh, which are fabricated by using simple transfer printing, is performed. The AgNi nanomesh shows high long-term stability to oxidation, heat, and chemicals compared with that of pure Ag nanomesh. This is because of nickel in the AgNi nanomesh. Furthermore, the AgNi nanomesh shows strong adhesion to a transparent substrate and good stability after repeated bending.

The effect of various levels of proteins, sulfates, and molecular weight (M w) of a sulfated-glycoprotein (NF3) from a sea cucumber, Stichopus japonicus, on nitric oxide (NO) releasing capacity from RAW 264.7 cells was investigated. The NF3 derivatives had various amounts of proteins (4.8~11.2%) and sulfates (6.8~25.2%) as well as different M w (640.3×10(3)~109.2×10(3) g/mol). NF3 was able to stimulate RAW 264.7 cells to release NO with lower protein contents, indicating that the protein moiety was not an important factor to stimulate macrophages. On the other hand, the NO inducing capacity was significantly reduced with decreased levels of sulfates and M w, implying that sulfates and M w played a pivotal role in activating RAW 264.7 cells. It was not clear why sulfates and a certain range of M w were essential for stimulating macrophages. It appeared that certain levels of sulfates and M w of sulfated-glycoproteins were required to bind to the surface receptors on RAW 264.7 cells.

We present a novel method of fabricating superhydrophobic and superoleophobic surfaces with nanoscale reentrant curvature by nanotransfer molding and controlled wet etching of the facile undercut. This method produces completely ordered re-entrant nanostructures and prevents capillary-induced bundling effects. The mushroom-like, re-entrant, overhanging structure demonstrates superhydrophobic and superoleophobic characteristics, as tested by water droplet bouncing and contact angle measurements, and has high transparency on a flexible substrate. Widespread use as self-cleaning surfaces is expected in the near future.

The entire nucleotide sequence of the xylose reductase (XR) gene in Candida milleri CBS8195 sourdough yeast was determined by degenerate polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and genome walking. The sequence analysis revealed an open-reading frame of 981 bp that encoded 326 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 36.7 kDa. The deduced amino acid sequence of XR of C. milleri was 64.7% homologous to that of Kluyveromyces lactis. The cloned XR gene was expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and the resulting recombinant S. cerevisiae strain produced xylitol from xylose, indicating that the C. milleri XR introduced into S. cerevisiae is functional. An enzymatic activity assay and semiquantitative reverse transcription-PCR revealed that the expression of CmXR was induced by xylose.
