RESUMO

Currently, polypropylene (PP) is used in various products, thus leading to high daily exposure in humans. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the toxicological effects, biodistribution, and accumulation of PP microplastics in the human body. In this study, administration of two particle sizes of PP microplastics (approximately 5 and 10-50 µm) did not lead to any significant changes in several toxicological evaluation parameters, including body weight and pathological examination, compared with the control group in ICR mice. Therefore, the approximate lethal dose and no-observed-adverse-effect level of PP microplastics in ICR mice were established as ≥2000 mg/kg. Furthermore, we manufactured cyanine 5.5 carboxylic acid (Cy5.5-COOH)-labeled fragmented PP microplastics to monitor real-time in vivo biodistribution. After oral administration of the Cy5.5-COOH-labeled microplastics to the mice, most of the PP microplastics were detected in the gastrointestinal tract and observed to be out of the body after 24 h in IVIS Spectrum CT. Therefore, this study provides a new insight into the short-term toxicity, distribution, and accumulation of PP microplastics in mammals.

RESUMO

The increased use of plastics has led to severe environmental pollution, particularly by microplastics-plastic particles 5 mm or less in diameter. These particles are formed by environmental factors such as weathering and ultraviolet irradiation, thereby making environmental pollution worse. This environmental pollution intensifies human exposure to microplastics via food chains. Despite potential negative effects, few toxicity assessments on microplastics are available. In this study, two sizes of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microplastics, approximately 5 µm and 10-50 µm, were manufactured and used for single and four-week repeated toxicity and pharmacokinetic studies. Toxicological effects were comprehensively evaluated with clinical signs, body weight, food and water consumption, necropsy findings, and histopathological and clinical-pathological examinations. Blood collected at 15, 30 60, and 120 min after a single administration of microplastics were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. In the toxicity evaluation of single and four-week repeated oral administration of PTFE microplastics, no toxic changes were observed. Therefore, the lethal dose 50 (LD50) and no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL) of PTFE microplastics in ICR mice were established as 2000 mg/kg or more. PTFE microplastics were not detected in blood, so pharmacokinetic parameters could not be calculated. This study provides new insight into the long-term toxicity and pharmacokinetics of PTFE microplastics.

RESUMO

The production, use, and waste of plastics increased worldwide, which resulted in environmental pollution and a growing public health problem. In particular, microplastics have the potential to accumulate in humans and mammals through the food chain. However, the toxicity of microplastics is not well understood. In this study, we investigated the toxicity of 10-50 µm polyethylene microplastics following single- and 28-day repeated oral administration (three different doses of microplastics of 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg/day) in ICR mice. For the investigation, we administered the microplastics orally for single- and 28-day repeated. Then, the histological and clinical pathology evaluations of the rodents were performed to evaluation of the toxicity test, and Raman spectroscopy was used to directly confirm the presence of polyethylene microplastics. In the single oral dose toxicity experiments, there were no changes in body weight and necropsy of the microplastics-treated group compared with that of controls. However, a histopathological evaluation revealed that inflammation from foreign bodies was evident in the lung tissue from the 28-day repeated oral dose toxicity group. Moreover, polyethylene microplastics were detected in the lung, stomach, duodenum, ileum, and serum by Raman spectroscopy. Our results corroborated the findings of lung inflammation after repeated oral administration of polyethylene microplastics. This study provides evidence of microplastic-induced toxicity following repeated exposure to mice.

RESUMO

It is generally accepted that while efficient suppression of molecular vibration is inevitable for purely organic phosphors due to their long emission lifetime in the regime of 1 ms or longer, fluorophores having a lifetime in the nanoseconds regime are not sensitive to collisional quenching. Here, however, we demonstrate that a fluorophore, 2,5-bis(hexyloxy)terephthaldehyde (BHTA), capable of having hydrogen bonding (H bonding) via its two aldehyde groups can have a largely enhanced (450%) fluorescence quantum yield (QY) in amorphous poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) matrix compared to its crystalline powder. We ascribe this enhanced QY to the efficient suppression of molecular vibrations via intermolecular H bonding. We confirm this feasibility by conducting temperature-dependent fluorescence emission intensity measurement. As gaseous phenol can intervene with the H bonding between BHTA and PAA, interestingly, BHTA embedded in PAA can selectively detect gaseous phenol by a sharp fluorescence emission intensity drop that is visibly recognizable by the naked eye. The results provide an insightful molecular design strategy for a fluorophore and fluorometric sensory system design for enhanced photoluminescence QY and convenient detection of various volatile organic compounds.

RESUMO

Regeneration of pure water is an important issue not only for the healthy life but also for the fine control of precise processes in various industries. One important issue in ultra-high purified water is to reduce the amount of total organic carbon (TOC). Herein, we introduce a new approach to reduce the TOC using the surface silanized nanoparticles, in which the magnetic nanoparticles (mNPs) are silanized and then complexed with ion exchange resin (IER) beads. The Fe3O4 mNPs are surface modified by using high concentrated vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) and then adhered on the surface of IER beads. The surface modified mNPs have a thick-shell of polysiloxane layer varying from 5 to 22 nm depending on the amount of VTMS used, which leads the significant increase of specific surface area. The IER beads embedding VTMS-silanized mNPs achieves about 7 µg/L of the TOC level in ultrapure water system, which is two orders less than 228 µg/L of the feeding water and one order less than 96 µg/L from the system using pristine IER beads. This result is mainly attributed to the polysiloxane layer forming broccoli-like surface structure and some part by the vinyl group of VTMS exposed to the amines in the water.

RESUMO

Self-healing, an autonomous repairing process stimulated by damage, has recently attracted a great deal of attention in the field of medical and mechanical engineering as well as from scientists, due to its valuable potential applications. However, as the self-healing process is mediated by specific functional materials, practical applications have been limited. Here, we introduce a healable homopolymer microcapsule that can self-heal a crack or cleaved part through a photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition process. Microcapsules were prepared through photopolymerization and suspension polymerization, each containing 1,1,1-tris (cinnamoyloxymethyl) ethane (TCE) and 1,1-di (cinnamoyloxymethyl) ethane (DCE) monomers, which act as healing materials. TCE and DCE monomers were polymerized into poly (TCE-co-DCE) without a photoinitiator under illumination. The epoxy specimen embedded with microcapsules showed obvious healing performance during illumination after cracking. From the FT-IR spectra for each step of the healing process, the specimen could be repeatedly self-healed through the reversible process of cyclobutane cross-links to the original cinnamate and vice versa. This work shows an alternative approach using homopolymer microcapsules to accomplish the repeatable self-healing of a crack without interface discontinuity, which could be adopted as a healing substance in various paints.

RESUMO

Development of eco-friendly polymer foams is an urgent research topic because of the serious environmental pollution caused by trash heaps and the time-release of harmful gases. Polymer PVC foam using azodicarbonamide as a chemical foaming agent has been highly requested for further improvement due to the residual ammonia gas that continuously leaks out. Here, we demonstrate an effective and costless process for the reduction of releasing ammonia from PVC foams using the overcoat technology of deodorants. We have selected four candidate materials, gelite, zeolite, terra alba, and fumed silica as original materials for the deodorant of ammonia, and they showed an ammonia deodorization rate (ADR) of over 80% without any treatment except the fumed silica. When we over-coated the UV-curing agent mixed deodorants on the PVC foams (thickness ~300 µm), the ADR of the terra alba and zeolite complex foams was remarkably higher than 90%, however, the specific gravity and chromaticity were not changed within 20%. This indicates that our developed process using deodorant layer for ammonia reduction has a high potential for the production of eco-friendly polymer foams.

RESUMO

Recently, the light-matter interaction at nanoscale has attracted great interest from physicists, chemists and material scientists, as it gives peculiar optical properties that couldn't be observed at the bulk scale. The synthesis and characterization of organic-inorganic heterostructures forming quantum dots, nanowires or nanotubes provide opportunities to understand their photophysical mechanism and to apply optoelecronic devices. Herein, we report a huge enhanced luminescence in a coaxial-like heterostructured poly (3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) with Au. We electrochemically synthesized P3MT nanowires (NWs) on a nanoporous template, and sequentially deposited Au on the surface of P3MT NWs. The diameter of heterostructured P3MT/Au NWs was about 200 nm, where the cladding-shape Au were about 10 nm. The visible range absorbance, with two new absorption peaks of P3MT/Au NWs, was significantly increased compared with that of P3MT NWs. Accordingly, the photoluminescence (PL) of a P3MT/Au NW was enormously increased; up to 170 times compared to that of P3MT NWs. More interestingly, an unexpected enhancement of PL was observed from cross-junction point of P3MT/Au NWs. The abnormal PL properties of P3MT/Au NWs were attributed to the charge transfer and the surface plasmon resonance between the cladding-shape Au and the core-shape P3MT, which resulted in the enhanced quantum yield. This incites us to reconsider the light-matter interaction in polymer-metal hybrid structures applicable for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Highly stable and flexible transparent electrodes are fabricated based on silver nanowires (AgNWs) on both polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) and polyimide (PI) substrates. Terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was utilized to probe AgNW films while bended with a radius 5 mm to discover conductivity of bended films which was further analyzed through Drude-Smith model. AgNW films experience little degradation in conductivity (<3%) before, after, and during 1000 bending cycles. Highly stable AgNW flexible electrodes have broad applications in flexible optoelectronic and electronic devices. THz-TDS is an effective technique to investigate the electrical properties of the bended and flattened conducting films in a nondestructive manner.

RESUMO

Metal-free organic phosphors can be an attractive smart optical sensing materials since, in such compounds, intersystem crossing (ISC) and the phosphorescence process are placed in subtle competition with fluorescence, internal conversion (IC), and non-radiative decay pathways. Here, we report a unique environment-dependent multi-luminescence switching behavior of metal-free organic phosphorescent materials. Through combined photophysical measurements and computational electronic structure analysis, we systematically investigated how physicochemical properties of organic solvents affect the photophysical pathways of the metal-free organic phosphors. By rationally adapting the finding into phosphor-doped electrospun polymer fibers, we developed a new luminometric sensory platform and achieved selective detection of eight different common organic solvents. The presented finding provides new possibilities for metal-free organic phosphors to be a novel class of smart optical sensory materials.
