RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the agreement among the items of the Korean physical therapist licensing examination, learning objectives of class subjects, and physical therapists' job descriptions. METHODS: The main tasks of physical therapists were classified, and university courses related to the main tasks were also classified. Frequency analysis was used to determine the proportions of credits for the classified courses out of the total credits of major subjects, exam items related to the classified courses out of the total number of exam items, and universities that offer courses related to the Korean physical therapist licensing examination among the surveyed universities. RESULTS: The proportions of credits for clinical decision making and physical therapy diagnosis-related courses out of the total number credits for major subjects at universities were relatively low (2.06% and 2.58%, respectively). Although the main tasks of physical therapists are related to diagnosis and evaluation, the proportion of physiotherapy intervention-related items (35%) was higher than that of examination and evaluation-related items (25%) on the Korean physical therapist licensing examination. The percentages of universities that offer physical therapy diagnosis and clinical decision making-related courses were 58.62% and 68.97%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Both the proportion of physiotherapy diagnosis and evaluation-related items on the Korean physical therapist licensing examination, and the number of subjects related to clinical decision making and physical therapy diagnosis in the physical therapy curriculum, should be increased to ensure that the examination items and physical therapy curriculum reflect the practical tasks of physical therapists.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the activation of back and lower limb muscles in subjects who were performing a squat exercise at different angles of trunk flexion. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty healthy subjects (age 21.1± 1.8 years, height 168.7 ± 8.2 cm, weight 66.1 ± 12.3 kg) volunteered. The activation of the erector spinae muscle, rectus femoris muscle, gluteus maximus muscle and biceps femoris muscle was observed while the subjects performed squat exercises with a trunk flexion of 0°, 15°, and 30°. [Results] The erector spinae muscle, gluteus maximus muscle, and biceps femoris muscle were activated more during the squat exercise with the trunk flexion at 30° than the exercise with the trunk flexion at 0°. The rectus femoris muscle showed a tendency to decrease as the truck flexion increased. [Conclusion] Squat exercise be executed while maintaining an erect trunk posture if one wishes to strengthen the quadriceps muscle while reducing the load on the lower back.

BACKGROUND: Older females have less dynamic postural control and muscle strength than do middle-aged females. Aging-related strength losses may limit balancing performance. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of the Y Balance Test (YBT) and lower limb strength to discriminate between females in 2 age groups, the relationship between YBT distance and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and the degree to which performance on YBT distance is related to lower limb strength in middle-aged and older females. METHOD: The 40 healthy, independently active females were divided into 2 groups: older and middle-aged. The participants underwent measurements of YBT distance using the YBT, maximal muscular strength of the lower limbs using a handheld dynamometer, and the BBS. RESULTS: The YBT distance in 3 directions and lower limb muscle strength for both lower limbs were significantly lower in the older adults than in the middle-aged group. A moderate correlation but insignificant correlation was found between the YBT composite distance and the BBS score. In the older females, YBT distance was significantly positively correlated with strength of the knee flexor and hip abductor. In the middle-aged group, YBT distance was significantly positively correlated with strength of the knee flexor and hip extensor. CONCLUSIONS: Performance on the YBT was influenced by the strength of lower limb. We suggested that YBT can be used to alternative as a measurement of dynamic balance. Proper training programs for older people could include not only strengthening exercises but also YBT performance to improve balance.

BACKGROUND: An optimal ambulance response interval is desirable for emergency medical services (EMS) operations. Arriving on scene within a treatment time window is often delayed for many reasons, including overwhelming call volume. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an association exists between the ambulance call volume (ACV), the unavailable-for-response (UFR) interval, and the delayed ambulance response for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study conducted in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The EMS ambulance logs from the metropolitan city's 22 EMS agencies, from January 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007, were obtained from the National Emergency Management Agency. These data included patient demographics and call location addresses. The addresses of the call locations and ambulance stations were geocoded and configured with a polygon expressing the optimal coverage areas in which an ambulance could travel within 4 minutes from their base station. The median ACV and mean UFR interval of each EMS agency were calculated. An actual response time interval greater than 4 minutes compared with the optimal coverage area was defined as a suboptimal response. Potential influencing factors on suboptimal response were analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model to calculated the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). RESULTS: Geocoding was successful for 255,961 calls, and 3,644 cardiac arrests occurred within the configured optimal response coverage areas. The response rate intervals for cardiac arrest patients, however, were optimal in only 22.6% of calls. Influencing factors for suboptimal response (occurring in 77.4% of the cases) were the median ACV and the mean UFR interval of each EMS agency. When the median ACV was seven or more, the OR of suboptimal response was 1.407 (1.142-1.734). If the mean UFR interval was 55 minutes or more, the OR for suboptimal response was 1.770 (1.345-2.329). CONCLUSION: The ambulance response time intervals in this study setting were associated with EMS agencies with higher ACVs and longer UFR intervals.
