RESUMO

Background: A significant number of patients experience persistent cognitive impairment after coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This study aimed to investigate the cognitive function of patients in the subacute phase of COVID-19 and to identify the clinical factors associated with cognitive sequelae. Materials and methods: Data from patients who visited the psychiatric department of our post-COVID clinic between March and May 2022 were analyzed. The results of neuropsychiatric function tests, including the digit span forward (attention/processing speed) and backward (working memory) tests, the trail making test part A (attention/processing speed) and part B (executive functioning), and the Stroop word color interference test (executive functioning), as well as clinical data from 40 patients in the subacute phase of COVID-19 were analyzed. We calculated the frequency of impairments in each cognitive measure, defined as a z-score of ≤-1.5 standard deviations below measure-specific age- and sex-adjusted norms. Results: Of the participants, 72.5% (n = 29) had impairments in at least one cognitive domain. Impairment in executive function was the most frequent (64.9%), followed by impairments in processing speed/attention (52.5%) and working memory (42.5%). Age was inversely correlated with T scores in all cognitive function tests. Conclusion: Regular examination of cognitive function is needed, especially in elderly individuals, regardless of the subjective symptom manifestations.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore factors associated with the work intention of hospital workers in the early stages of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in South Korea. METHODS: An online self-reported survey was conducted in a tertiary hospital. Respondents were asked to report their perceived threat and perceived risk of infection, evaluation of hospital response, demographics, and job-related factors. Descriptive statistics and multivariate regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: A total of 441 employees participated in this study. Of respondents, 60% were willing to accept their work during an infectious disease outbreak and 12.5% were unwilling to accept the work. In addition, 8% of respondents reported that they had considered quitting their job, 54.4% reported that their job was dangerous, and 50.1% of respondents perceived the severity of COVID-19 as high. Perceived threat and effectiveness of hospital response were associated with hospital employees' intention to work. CONCLUSIONS: Hospital workers are at the front line of the COVID-19 outbreak. This study highlighted hospital workers' perceived effectiveness of organizational response to the outbreak, and perceived threats were found to be important factors for whether they continued to work or not in the fight against the outbreak.

RESUMO

In this study, we report the production of uracil from methanol by an isolated methylotrophic bacterium, Methylobacterium sp. WJ4. The use of methanol as alternative carbon feedstock is attractive option in biotechnology. As a feedstock of biotechnological processes, methanol has distinct advantages over methane. This is not only due to physical and chemical considerations, but also to the properties of the pertinent organisms. Besides, with a wide array of biological activities and synthetic accessibility, uracil is considered as privileged structures in drug discovery. Uracil analogues have been applied to treatments of patients with cancer or viral infections. In this respect, it is meaningful to produce uracil using methanol. The effect of process parameters and methanol concentration for uracil production were investigated and optimized. Uracil production was remarkably increased to 5.76mgg cell dry weight-1 in optimized condition. The results were significant for further understanding of methylotrophic bacteria on uracil production.

RESUMO

Methane is an abundant, inexpensive one-carbon feedstock and one of the most powerful greenhouse gases. Because it does not compete with food demand, it is considered a promising carbon feedstock for the production of valuable products using methanotrophic bacteria. Here, we isolated a novel methanotrophic bacterium, Methylomonas sp. SW1, from a sewage sample obtained from Wonju City Water Supply Drainage Center, Republic of Korea. The conditions for uracil production by Methylomonas sp. SW1, such as Cu2+ concentration and temperature were investigated and optimized. As a result, Methylomonas sp. SW1 produced uracil from methane as a sole carbon source with a titer of 2.1mg/L in 84h without genetic engineering under the optimized condition. The results in this study demonstrate the feasibility of using Methylomonas sp. SW1 for the production of uracil from methane. This is the first report of uracil production from gas feedstock by methanotrophic bacteria.

RESUMO

Myong Ji Hospital has launched the 'public health Service project team' for the first time in Korea as a private institution to carry forward and administer public health projects and services in a more structured way. Notably, Goyang Centenarian's Good Memory School has deliberately provided various art therapy programs to those who have a high risk of dementia in pursuit of promoting dementia prevention, and maintaining a positive mind and healthy body for any required daily activities for senior living. Participating patients have expressed remarkable satisfaction, and the art therapy programs have not only shown the effectiveness of strengthening the mental status of the cognitively-impaired patients but have also proposed a feasible non-pharmacological therapy option, which promotes the quality of their daily living and lowers the burden for their caregivers.

RESUMO

In this study, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) derived from Oceanimonas smirnovii (OS) was expressed as a soluble protein in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). We isolated OS-PEPC (a recombinant PEPC protein) by his-tag purification. The purified protein showed a single band upon analysis with SDS-PAGE, and it had an apparent molecular mass of 98 kDa. Pufied OS-PEPC showed a specific activity value of 21.8 ± 0.495 U/mg protein. Especially, OS-PEPC showed the enzymatic activity between 40 and 50 °C. It maintained enzymatic activity in basic pH conditions (pH value, 9-10). We also measured OS-PEPC PEP and HCO3 (-) saturation kinetics and confirmed the effect of divalent cation on OS-PEPC activity.
